My wife and I just discovered Marika's a few months back, and I have to say it's breakfast kitchen is one of the best we've found in the North Shore area. There's definitely something of a German bent to the place, which is reflected in the menu (and occasionally in the conversations you overhear!). I would give Marika's more stars but for the service...and I don't mean the wait staff, who are some of the friendliest and engaging folks you'll find. I mean the kitchen staff. Having been there four or five times now, I get the impression there's only one poor sod working in that kitchen (which, of course, isn't his fault but management's). Translation: if they're busy, you can expect one-and-a-half to two hours to pass between sitting down and leaving. I have finally given up on this place. Grumpy stern owner, waitress is always flustered and nuts even if there are only a few tables going. The eggs are good, food is good, but the service is so weird. I called ahead today for a couple breakfast sammies and they hadnt started making them till i was there. They have been really unfriendly to my small kids in the past, and i witnessed one of them being so rude to a 10 top that didnt re-confirm their reservation. The waitress was exasperated with them, being sarcastic and chastising them because they would be taking up tables. The place had 4 parties at that point. Crazy. So i am done. I just had to run to a nearby atm in the pelting rain because they are cash only. Never again. read more

OK this place is fantastic if you our not in a hurry... the sitting is limited and has a huge local following. The owner treats this place as if you our in her actual dining room taking orders and floating from table to table chatting for awhile. She is extremely friendly and a hugger :-) The food is delicious and comes out hot, there is only one cook and he doesn't rush the food to maintain quality. Just ok food. Been wanting to try this place for awhile. The owner is so sweet and friends they have a solid follow of regulars. I had 2 eggs scrambled, the eggs were done some unique way. They didn't look scrambled. The husband had western omelette. He thought they were mean on the ham. The portions weren't huge which is nice and the home fries are good but you don't get enough in my opinion. I don't think we will be back soon. Cash only! read more

Just moved to Beverly and tried Marika's on a whim for lunch on a Wednesday. The Staff is very friendly and attentive. The food was great as well! My boyfriend had their special bacon, apple, cheese sandwich which was great and said he would defiantly have again. I had your standard cheeseburger and home fries which was very good as well. Marika's makes one of the best breakfasts out there. It's not gluttonous like a Red's but quality is far superior. The weekend omelet special is always to die for, and the iced mocha is superb. This isn't the place to go if you're in a huge rush. The grill is small, so breakfast is made, it seems, for one table at a time. Bring the paper and relax. My roommate and I have been weekday morning regulars here for almost a year. In addition to weekly breakfasts, we stop in for lunches when we have days off and have been in on the weekend with other friends (and our parents). Pros: - The food is wonderful. I've had pancakes, eggs, toast, sandwiches both breakfast and lunch, crabmeat quiche, home fries, pie, french toast, and macaroni and cheese - and every single thing was delicious. I mean it. Not just diner-delicious, but home-cooked Mama-made-it marvels of German and American food. So good. - The staff is awesome. They're sweet, funny, and sassy - it's more like eating with your family than anything else. - Everything is cheap. Being a regular there has been completely affordable. - The family that owns it is German, so they serve German home-cooked specials that are to die for on Thursdays. They are proud of their German food and rightly so. - I'm terribly picky with chais, but Marika's makes the best chai lattes I've ever had. In the summer, they'll serve you an iced one mixed with ice cream if you ask. Do it. Ask for one. You will not regret it. - Somehow they manage to get the portions perfect. There's always just enough to be full and never too much to eat in one sitting. Cons: - Wait can be long. Don't go if you're in a hurry. - Don't expect to be coddled. The staff is personable and gracious, but pulls no punches. They cook for themselves, their regulars, and anyone who is nice to them. If you're mean or impolite, they won't tolerate it. - Cash-only and not open on Tuesdays, which just means you have to plan ahead. I'm glad they give themselves a break once a week though, because they work hard. Marika's might be my favorite restaurant on the North Shore because it's affordable, homey, and delicious. My loyalty to the place is absolute, both because of the food and because of the people. I went to Marika's for the first time last week and I'm so glad I did. I absolutely love this place and can't recommend it enough. If I were to review the food itself I might not have given it quite as many stars. I'm not a greasy-spoon-type and I have a really high standard for brunch (one I haven't experienced on the North Shore for some time: former favorites were the Sunny Day Cafe and the Franklin Cafe's short-lived brunch -- both in Gloucester). Marike's food is just above average, but the ingredients are fresh, the portions are just right, and the food is made with love and--given the other choices in the area--this really is the tops. One foodie score - Marike's does have a way with the home fries. What is so wonderful about this place is the mother and daughter team that run it. You walk in and it immediately feels like home. The mother is, quite possibly, the sweetest and warmest woman on the planet. She welcomes you into her home like you're a neighborhood kid -- no matter how old you are -- and treats everyone in there like family. The daughter, on the other hand, is totally funny, fun, capable and completely brash. I knew that woman for 40 minutes and, if I had to pick someone to be with me on a sinking ship, it would be her. The chick is a survivor if I ever saw one. Listening to the daughter talk to the customers reminded me of my favorite breakfast haunt in New York City. Marika's has a fun and quirky warmth to it. It's the kind of place that's there for the neighborhood, nothing can faze the staff, and everything becomes a tall tale for the locals. *** They did accommodate for groups when I was there, but small groups (of four). Service here was pretty great and the staff/owners are so friendly and neighborhood-like. We came in from Boston for a race and had some breakfast here afterward - coming from Boston, these prices were amazingly cheap - so awesome. The western omelet was tasty and hot with ham, onions and peppers. The french toast, however, left more to be desired - it had a nice texture and crunch but no real flavor. Being a local resident, Marika's is within walking distance of our apartment in Beverly. We thought we'd give it a try for breakfast, as it looked decent from the outside. Three of us ventured there by foot in the heat last Sunday morning around 10:00 a.m. It looked packed (always a good sign), and there was only one table available, which the waitress had us sit down at, and took our drink orders and menu orders. Our juice, water, and coffee was promptly brought out. My friend's cup of coffee was refilled. Fast forward to FORTY FIVE minutes later, and we're all starving for breakfast, and had finished all of our drinks. My boyfriend and friend wanted to just leave cash and leave, but me being the bigger person, decided I would walk up to the register and explain to the waitress that we'd like to just pay for our drinks and leave, being that we had waited almost an hour for breakfast. I also thought I would give them that common courtesy, in order that they wouldn't bring out our plates with us not being there. The waitress said she didn't total the checks, and brought out whom I am assuming is her grandmother (and mother of the namesake of the restaurant). She asked what my problem was, and I told her that we had been waiting for almost an hour for breakfast, and would just like to pay for our drinks and leave. Her reply? "What did you expect on a holiday weekend? There's going to be a wait every place you go!" I answered, "We're hungry, and have waited almost an hour. If we were told upon being seated that the wait was going to be this long, we would have went elsewhere." I asked, "How much for the drinks?" Grandma replied in a sharp tone, "Go! We don't want your money!!" I tried to hand her some cash and she put her hands up to say no, as if she was dismissing me. Very unprofessional, rude, and highly embarrassing. Needless to say, she didn't even apologize for the inconvenience. Next time, we'll go to our favorite place, Red's Sandwich Shop, in Salem, MA. The waitstaff is polite, and they don't make you wait an hour to get your food. What a shame, Marika's menu/food looked promising, but for the lack of respect and politeness, I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Some had said it's worth the wait? Maybe. But if they knew it was a holiday weekend, they should have staffed accordingly. It looked like only one or two people were manning the grill. And reading from other reviewers, it seems that this is always the case. Hire some more help, already! By the way, they had not even STARTED our order on our way out....what an utter waste of time. read more

Marika's is great. We've been there for both breakfast and lunch and the food is always good. "Mom" will always come over and see how things are and Marika is chatty and familiar--she's even squatted at the table or plopped in a chair to chat. We were remembered after the second or third time we went, and are always greeted warmly. We often go for a late breakfast after church. Many of the criticisms from other reviewers are true, it's a matter of expectations: the staff is a bit disorganized and sometimes we've waited a while for the check but, frankly, I kinda like that this is a family run place and isn't perfect; I'm not perfect either. I don't go there in a hurry, and I don't expect the Ritz, and I'm always happy and satisfied when I leave. The menu is limited, but it's a breakfast and lunch spot and the basics are there. There are always a few daily specials on the board. The omelets have always been good--my favorite is a "German" omelet with sausage, some sort of fruit like apple, and cheese. The pancakes are HUGE--we always ask for a "kids size" one for our son and there's never a problem with that--and delicious. I also like the "snappy eggs", which is a twist on benedict. There are lots of great breakfast spots around, and I certainly love the Depot Diner when I can get in, but Marika's has a special place in my heart. Truthfully, I didn't want to review Marika's because I'm selfish and I didn't want to share. But then I realized that it's just plain mean not to inform all the Yelpers (?) about the iced mocha, which is pretty much what I imagine they serve in Heaven, only in Heaven it would be calorie-free. I eat at Marika's almost every weekend and can safely say I've ordered off the menu less than a dozen times. Just walk in the door, look to your left and order whatever is on the Special Board. You won't regret it. I generally get the pancakes & Geoff gets omelets. Plus Marika is so fabulous, you'll want to take her home and have her live on your couch. And I think Geoff has a little crush on her mom Mushka (sp?), who is equally as fabulous and feisty. So go enjoy! (And do bring some reading material to enjoy with your iced mocha!) read more

And can I mention the french toast? It's actually made from a nice and thick french baguette and come beautifully prepared with a fine dusting of powdered sugar. The service is also great. Marika and her mother make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in until you leave full and happy. Marika is bubbly and super friendly and her mother, Mushka, makes sure that everything is made to your liking. They also have a cute waitress on staff :). I've gone to Marika's twice, and had a horrible experience both times. The first time I had to leave before receiving my meal because the order took so long to come to the table. 45 minutes to make overhard eggs? Really? The service the second time was terrible -- once again, we ended up leaving before receiving the food because the waitress was so rude and made my dining companion so uncomfortable that she CRIED. Then the owner(?) followed us out into the street and told us that we shouldn't mind the waitress because "She's German and can't help being rude." Honestly, I don't think that is an acceptable explanation. I often have people ask for recommendations for breakfast places in Beverly and I always warn them against Marika's. Is that harsh and mean-spirited? Perhaps...but then again, as someone of German descent myself, perhaps I "can't help" my behavior due to my heritage. read more

Marika's is the anti-Denny's. This is a great European style cafe with wonderful homemade meals. Their weekend brunch specials are to die for and on Thursdays they do a special German meal. I personally love their special omelets and the German style pancakes that are only available on the weekends.
