THE BEST SERVICE DEPARTMENT EVER! I have been to a lot of service departments where I have waited endless hours not knowing when my car would be done. As soon as I drove in they greeted me, mind you the gentlemen even apologized for having me wait only 2 minutes, and right there gave me a estimated time. I booked my appointment on line and it took a little longer to check in vehicle but they informed me that next time when i book on line and search by phone it will find me and they will have all the information. Summary: Coming back after more than three hours of waiting for a routine service to see your car still parked in the same spot it was in the morning may be explained by a dealership that is going through growing pains and hasn't yet got its act together. But there is no excuse for putting a person who has absolutely no sense of what the word "service" means in charge of the service department. I have a 2016 Mazda and was very happy with the service department at the previous dealership at Marin Mazda-Subaru. I had received multiple welcoming emails from the new ownership inviting me to the new location. I arrived at 10 a.m. for my appointment and was greeted by a brusque and testy service manager, Tom Johnson. Virtually every comment in the 5 minute exchange elicited some surly response: - Could you also look at the digital clock; it is always running fast. Growl: All clocks run fast, except for your iPhone. - Okay! Would appreciate adjusting the service light to come on at the right time; it came on months in advance. Snap: We didn't do that, your previous dealership did. - I didn't say it was you; just making sure. Bark: That's something you can do yourself anyway; read the manual. I didn't understand why such bad-tempered person is put in charge of the service department. I thought to myself he must be having a bad day, but having now read other reviews, Tom Johnson did not deserve the benefit of the doubt. I was in good mood that day anyway and I'd driven from the East Bay; I wasn't going to let what looked like a high-strung and stressed out person ruin the day: - Okay! I'll read the manual on that. How long will the service take? Another bark: Three hours. - Can I get a shuttle ride to downtown San Rafael? Annoyed: If you want wifi, why don't you just walk to the coffee shop around the corner, they have wifi there. I proceeded to the nearby bare-bones cafe and was lucky enough to get one of the only two seats with a back (there are a number of stools). I also received a nice text - automatically generated obviously - letting me know that I can check on the status of the car at any time via text. I patiently waited until 10 minutes after the entire three hours passed before sending a text asking about the status. No response. I walked back to the dealership. - Is my car ready? Rushing around distracted: Let me check. ... We'll get to your car next. - Next? It's 1:20pm, I brought the car in at 10 a.m.? Perfunctory and disingenuous: Sorry, we had couple of emergencies. I took my key and left. But not before trying to talk to the owner Mike Glasser. He was not there. To the owner Mike: I have noticed you are responding to negative reviews here with apologies and promises to make things better. It is more than clear where you need to start. Bought a used vehicle from Geoffrey, sight unseen from the internet. Once we took delivery of the car several service/maintenance issues popped up. Although the contract clearly stated car was sold AS IS. And we purchased no extended warranty. First time was a long wait just to get helped, but this last time around, Lilly was ready to get me in on the spur of the moment (during pre-holiday busy-ness) and the car was actually ready the same day! Tom has been great to deal with; I think they're still improving, so for folks who had a bad experience before, I'd expect they'll do a better job this time around. Only knock - particularly when I've had the 5-star service/experience at the local Toyota dealer nearby - is that it wouldn't hurt to give the car a wash after it's been serviced. Marin Mazda followed up immediately, and offered an option to text for initial conversation, which was very convenient. I can highly recommend this dealership. We have sold three cars through them over the past year. I usually trade the cars in when buying new but have gotten a betrer price from them than what Mercedes and other dealers offered as a trade in. They don't play games, are very fair and pleasant to deal with. They seem to offer buyers a very good value too. They sell the used cars for significantly less than the dealer would. As a Fire Captain I know service when I see it. Five stars are not enough. Bought a used car and it was painless. Had a problem with the paint on the front bumper of the car..... almost a year AFTER i bought it.... no questions asked, they fixed it, on them. They stated the bumper ( whoever had painted it ) was not prepped correctly so they would repaint and I wouldn't pay a thing. This is a used car. Buckle up! This is a long one... I have a 2014 Mazda that I used to have serviced at Marin Subaru (they had the Mazda contact). I was in love with them!! Great customer service. They would call when car was done being serviced, they always offered to pick me up from work using their shuttle service, and I always felt appreciated. They understood that people can take their cars anywhere and were grateful that we chose them. However, when Mitsubishi (now Marin Mazda) took over that contract, all of the above mentioned positive qualities went to crap!! No phone call when my car was finished, no offer of a shuttle (yes, they have one, you have to request it), and when I got to the counter the service manager gave me a $125 invoice. None of those things did me in, what came next is what really upset me... when I explained that I have Mazda Care (my routine maintenance is included in my monthly payment) the manager tells me that he asked me that over the phone (never happened), then he says "I know how to get ahold of you when Mazda confirms that you don't." Guess who never got a phone call about the care plan they "didn't" have? Me! Long review all to say be cautious. If you think you're going to get the same care you got from Marin Subaru, you're not! At least not until they do some serious in-house adjusting. Good luck! read more

I was a big fan of Marin Mazda Subaru before the two businesses separated. I knew exactly which Mazda 3 I wanted. I spoke with Mark by txt message. We negotiated and agreed on a great price. He made arrangements to have the car I wanted transferred to Marin. When I arrived at the dealership the car was washed, fueled, up front, and ready to go. I wrote a check (did not finance), signed the required documents, and we were out of there in less than 30 minutes. The process couldn't have gone any smoother. I'm extremely happy with my purchase. This is the first time I've used this new Mazda dealership for service as opposed to the Mazda Subaru, which I'd been to twice. I came in and immediately the service manager (Tom) tried to sell me an oil change, air filter, etc. for $180. I explained I bought a warranty that covers service - He said "no, it's expired." I said "I don't think so." Without a beat, he responded, "oh, yeah, it's covered." At this point, I know he's a liar because he didn't even take a minute to check another screen or system before agreeing with me. As expected, he calls mid-day to tell me my brakes are "metal on metal!" and my tires are dangerously bad. He quotes me $900. I tell him no and he's done with me. The most shocking thing was the treatment when I got back. I think it was still Tom - it was an older gentleman cruising around the service floor in these white sunglasses that douchebags on yachts wear. He got my paperwork and again dramatically told me that my brakes were less than 1mm! My brakes hadn't been grinding, shaking ,or requiring excessive pressure. I commented, "it's so strange because there's no sound." He said, "It's not the sound, it's if they stop!" And walked off. Not a second glance or word. It was shockingly rude. He bumbled off to find my car. Because I had asked them to please replace the battery in my key fob if they could (it was dead), and of course, they didn't, he couldn't find the car just clicking the fob. I watched him go from car to car while my car was right in front of us both. I could easily have pulled it out myself. He said, "All washed." I'd had the car washed a few days ago and it was no different in cleanliness whatsoever, so another lie. I took the car for a second opinion. The brakes did need work, but the 1mm metal on metal thing was not true. The tires are fine for another 6-8 months. The shocks needed work, which Mazda didn't even catch. In fact, the inspection form wasn't even completed - not a single check mark anywhere; just the incorrect brake and tire comments. I have no idea what they actually did, if anything. They utilize a text message system to tell you when the car is ready which is nice, I guess. They also pay for Ubers to take you to/from the dealership. I prefer how it was at Mazda/Subaru where they use shuttle drivers. The drivers were always nice, the cars they used were comfortable, and it didn't feel as impersonal as Uber. I have a warranty that doesn't expire for 2 years or another 50k miles for my service (sorry, Tom, but I paid for it so I will use it when I come in despite your best efforts) but it's impossible I'll return here. I'll either try another dealer or take to the mechanics who did my work this time. Rudeness and incompetence may be cool in the White House, but in my day to day life and as far as my personal investments and safety go, I'll pass. read more

Bought my 2014 Subaru Forester from Marin Mazda in March. When I went to pick up the vehicle (after they detailed it and fixed a crack in the windshield) I was given only one key to the vehicle. I told them that when I purchased the vehicle there were two keys. I drove back and forth between their two stores a number of times and nobody could find the second key (with the alarm and controls built into it). I was then told that my wife probably took it home and then they said there probably wasn't a second key and I was mis-remembering everything. Long story short after about 10 phone calls, three ferry trips to their store, and being asked if I would at least pay for half the cost of the key they finally made me another key (for free). A month later they found my original key. Apparently they gave it to someone else who bought a Subaru from them. While the "missing key" experience was lame and resulted in a lot of wasted time and energy for me I wasn't too concerned as it all worked out in the end. However after about 5 months of owning the car it began to shake/vibrate whenever I drove it over 55 MPH. I took it to Marin Subaru where they found that the front left control arm on the car was broken. They also told me that the front brakes needed to be replaced. At this point I'd only put about 1100 miles on the car so I called Marin Mazda to see why the brakes hadn't been replaced before I bought the vehicle. I was basically told that Marin Subaru was being hard on them, the brakes didn't necessarily "need" to be replaced, and that the measurement of wear left on the pads was all subjective. After a whole lot of back and forth Marin Mazda said they would cover 1/2 the cost of the front brakes (seriously?). Fortunately for me, Subaru has a goodwill program and Subaru covered the cost of replacing the front left control arm. This experience was pretty frustrating as the defense presented to me by Marin Mazda was essentially that I shouldn't trust Marin Subaru's opinion. The fact that they Marin Mazda sold me a car with a broken control arm didn't seem to matter much to them. About two months later the car (at this point I'd put on about 2500 miles on the car) began making a "clicking" sound when I turned the wheel fully to one side. Once again I took the car into Marin Subaru where they discovered that both front axles needed to be replaced. Marin Subaru also told me that the rear brakes Marin Mazda installed (when I originally bought the car) were cheap and that they were already cupping and would need to be replaced within the year. Luckily for me, Marin Subaru was able to get both axles replaced under the Subaru goodwill program. However Marin Subaru was unable to cover the brakes because the brakes installed by Marin Mazda are not OEM. When I called Marin Mazda to speak with someone about it I was passed along to a couple of different people and while initially they offered to "see what they could do" none of them have respond to my subsequent calls/messages. I sent a few emails to them as well and those too receive no response. The mechanic at Marin Subaru was pretty adamant that this whole thing was a problem and offered to help - he called and spoke to Marin Mazda however that ultimately failed and he has no recourse so it didn't go anywhere. Overall, this is just a disappointing experience. I spent a lot of time and effort researching what car I wanted to purchase and thought that I was going to a reputable dealer. While Marin Mazda made it relatively easy and painless to purchase the vehicle it's really unfortunate that they sold me a vehicle with a broken control arm, two bad axles, and brakes that needed to be replaced. This tells me that Marin Mazda does not put forth a whole lot of effort into ensuring the safety and functionality of their vehicles before selling them to their customers and makes me more than a little worried about what other vehicle issues may be in store for me down the road. After my experiences with Marin Mazda, I would strongly recommend against purchasing a vehicle from Marin Mazda. It's possible that the issues with my vehicle are the exception and Marin Mazda typically does do a very good job at inspecting their vehicles before selling them however their unresponsiveness to me and Marin Subaru's mechanic is a real problem. Ultimately the vehicle will be repaired but the poor customer service is an endemic problem that Marin Mazda does not seem interested in trying to fix. read more

Thought it was a great experience at first. I was approved online after a thorough credit check process which definitely showed up on my credit report, I was happy to see I could get the car I wanted from them. The next morning I called to ask if it was still there, as I had quite a drive, and made the three hour drive there only to be told they had sold it already. This meaning as I called to ask if it was available they were selling it to someone else. I think customer service would have been letting the customer coming to see a specific car from 3 hours away which they ran credit for, know that it was sold after they called to say they were on the way. Sending an email after I called seems kind of pathetic. And to not offer to show me other vehicles told me they didn't want my business. I would say definitely not to take your business here unless you don't mind horrible customer service and lack of basic manners or respect. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by the car buying experience at Marin Mazda. Got exactly what I was looking for, at a fair price, and was treated well. Sales people on the floor, Jill and Sean, were both great. They were informative, friendly, helpful, and most importantly not pushy. Sales Manger Mike was fair with me. It's his job to be a much better negotiator than me, and he definitely was, but he didn't beat me up too bad and it felt honest and respectful. Plus Mike was happy talking strictly out-the-door numbers with me, so I didn't have to worry about all the different prices/fees/charges, which ones are taxed, whether the $30 registration transfer non-governmental DMV FLG fee is legit, etc. When the price was agreed, they handled the coordination of financing through my credit union with no problem. Filling out the purchase paperwork in the finance office was the least pleasant part. I got the usual, puzzled "what do you mean you want to read it before signing it?" stare as if that were crazy. It was made worse by my poor planning to go by after work, because by the time I started the contractual stuff it was late and everyone (including me) was trying to get home. Once I made sure the contract numbers all added up to the agreed price, I was so stoked it was going to work out that I completely glossed over, despite it being pointed out to me, the $100 deductible on the extended warranty. It had never been discussed during negotiations that the extended warranty would have a deductible. My bad. When I got home and had a chance to look closer at the paperwork, I found I was missing a copy of the extended warranty declaration page I'd signed. But worse, the details in the extended warranty booklet specified it would be completely voided by lowering springs. That was something I'd specifically asked Marin Mazda about and they'd assured me suspension modifications only affect claims on their extended warranties related to/affected by the modification. When I returned to Marin Mazda a couple days later to raise these issues, I was expecting to get a lot of buyer-beware grief. It took a little convincing that an amendment was even necessary, but within 10 minutes they had a declaration page to me with the optional suspension modifications allowance. They were cool about the correction and it seems like it was just an honest oversight. The professional way in which my concerns were addressed make me glad I purchased from Marin Mazda. read more

The Mazda dealer near where we live suddenly shut down and we were forced to find another place to have our CX-5 problem serviced. We swallowed hard and picked Marin Mazda, simply because it received the far better Yelp reviews of the two remaining local dealers. And we were NOT disappointed. First off, it's a VERY busy service department. And yet, possibly because we made an appointment online, they moved our car right in. The problem we'd been having, an emissions trouble light, had been plaguing us for a year, we had failed our California smog check once, and the clock was ticking with the State for getting it done. Marin Mazda's tech quickly diagnosed the problem, eliminated all of the cheaper/faster possible options and gave us the news that we'd need a new catalytic converter (this didn't surprise us). The price quoted was fair and the service (which is complex) was performed well. And yet for us the highlight of the experience was Michelle, their customer service representative. She is lovely. She was friendly and spoke about complex car issues in terms we could easily understand. We never felt like we were about to be taken advantage of. I visited this dealership to buy lexus rx 350. Before i go there called the dealer confirmed the car is available and i will come around 2-3 pm. But once i am there the car was not at dealer and it was at the lexus dealer for recall. I waited about an hour finally saw the car. Liked it make an reasonable offer but that sales manager was so rude unprofessional, treat customer poorly. I showed online comparison price but the sales manager told me that if i got that price we will buy from you. I just pissed of that is how he treats the customers. Came to this place to check out a corvette that was listed for $42,900. Beautiful car, nice features, we totally loved it. Being Indian, we negotiate hard, so we offered $35k, just to get us started. Before even beginning to negotiate, Mike came out yelling about he was never going to sell the car for that much. Fine, we agreed, since we knew it was a BS offer and we were willing to go higher. Instead of being kind about it and giving a counteroffer, Mike proceeded to yell about how we didn't know the value of the car and he wasn't going to give us a discount at all. In my experience, with the 15 cars total we've bought for everyone in my family and extended family, this is how we negotiate. If Mike didn't like our offer, that's fine, he did not need to yell and then proceed to tell us he didn't care whether we bought the car or not. There are about 100 different, more pleasant ways he could have reacted to the offer. No where on any of the websites we looked at did it say that the price was non-negotiable, so why Mike decided to yell about how he wasn't going to negotiate at all, is beyond my comprehension. Overall, the service here was horrible and we did not end up buying the car. read more
