The moment I stepped in the place, I knew I was in for a treat. Even though they hadn't opened just yet, Anthony and Ursula were warm, welcoming, and just the best people you could ask for to host. The interior of the place just FELT like home. Being a Texan and out of my element, I didn't know what to expect as far as Italian cuisine goes, but the pollo limone (hope I'm saying that right) was BEYOND expectation! The calamari was perfect! The atmosphere, the food, the music, I can't say enough good stuff about this place and it's staff! They were even nice enough to put my name on the establishment for the duration of my meal. Lol. Wow, what a great place this is. If I could leave 10 stars, I would. It's a small, very family-feeling spot. We were overnighting at the Hilton Boston Logan Airport and wanted to find an Italian restaurant at prime-time on a Friday night. Everywhere we looked needed a reservation, and the openings were 9:00 and later. My wife found Mario's in Yelp, called and pled our case to the dear lady that answered the phone, and she told her to come on, she could work us in. What a treat Mario's is! First off - our waiter (sorry, we didn't get his name) was phenomenal. He treated us like family, and we wish we could spend Sunday dinner with him and his family. The stories he told of their Sunday dinners were great, everything I would expect a Sunday dinner at Mario's house to be. Next - the food, incredible. We had the Lobster Ravioli and the Lasagna special. The Italian dressing on the house salad was so light and bright. Wow, very good food all around. Three - wine selection, nice short and sweet wine menu with a good variety of well-priced Chianti on the list. And lastly - the atmosphere, tables with red/white checkered tablecloths, no booths, sitting next to other families and couples and groups of ladies dining, perfect and just the way it should be. At the request of dear friends, we all stopped here to have dinner before our morning flight. The owner is there to make sure you enjoy your meal. It was a typical Italian kitchen. I felt that the marinara was out of this world. It really was a great tomato sauce over house made angel hair pasta. My other favorite was the homemade cannoli. I don't know how to rate this one. Most of the meal was a delight and the red sauce is OMG, I could drink this stuff. The veal limone, was not edible. Just a fantastic Italian restaurant! We had a late flight from Logan, my wife called and asked if we could bring our bags because we were super early and they said sure. Who wants to eat airport food! We felt bad because we were sitting at a large table but the staff was extremely accommodating and we were not rushed at all. Another great sign, lots of regulars eating and picking up food. Staff greeted them by name, asked how family member's were doing (also by name). Felt like I was visiting some Italian friends house for Sunday diner. Ok so how was the food? Very good, asked for recommendations and they all were very good. The real deal here for Italian. Beautiful handmade. Boss lady says been here 40 years doing this. Prosciutto is stunning. Other foods next table of customers is also...stunning! Boss Ursula stops by occasionally visits. Assure me I'll like her cannoli. Will see. Only had a couple and wasn't impressed positive. Well Boss Ursula was right. After a basketball tournament game and a Red Sox game, my daughter and I were looking for some great Italian in East Boston. There are several great choices in the area, but we went with Mario's because of the truly nice lady who answered the phone (Rino's didn't answer at all). When we got here (parking is horrendous) we were greeted by that sane nice lady who said it would be a few minutes. It is a small room and was packed with big, loud family tables. Like a communal Italian dining room for several families. Loud, boisterous and happy people all around. After our wait we were seated and the food started coming very quickly. Bread and butter, oil, parmesan and red pepper flakes. Cans of soda. Then an uninspired salad drenched in dressing made me question maybe we had made a mistake here... ...and then the veal and chicken parm came and everything was resolved. Spectacular. Crispy, delicious, covered in a truly fantastic sauce and great stretchy cheese, this rivals anything in the North End or Federal Hill in Providence. Ironically, the decent portions of the proteins and a small side of (really great) pasta in that sauce made this special. Fantastic. In lousy restaurants they give you lots of pasta, it's cheap, to distract you from the average food. This dinner is so good, you wouldn't really miss the pasta. But you'll want more because it's so good. Normally the unevenness of the first parts of the meal would take this review down a star. But the main dish was so great I'm staying with five stars. Absolutely amazing ! Came in for a Friday night dinner. Didn't want to cook myself so we figured to try something new. Wow we were impressed. And we left very full. Started with a special of arancini and a bottle of wine. Ordered our mains (amazing, and the people around us had dishes that looked just as good). This is our favorite Italian restaurant. This is the best intimate neighborhood restaurant we have ever found. My wife had the veal and vegetable which consisted of three thinly pounded out breaded veal cutlets and broccoli, onions and red peppers, hold the mushroom, and all covered with a delicious lemon butter sauce. My wife has never found another restaurant which prepares veal as good as Mario's. The lobster tails were in the shell. (I'm a lobster person. I was also offered just lobster meat so that I wouldn't have to get the lobster out of the shell.) I will take the leftover fettuccine for my lunch. I was here on a cold Monday night - my flight to BOS had been super delayed due to weather and I was hangry by the time we landed. My hotel was in Canton but I needed to eat immediately and was hankering for some good old Italian food. Eastie is the best place to get that, so hopped on Yelp to find myself some Veal Parm. I called ahead to Mario's since one of the reviews mentioned they were closed on Mondays - they're not, they're open on Mondays and I rushed right over! It really is like going to a friend's house for dinner - super unpretentious, super sweet ladies who pointed me to a corner table. I was one of two tables filled that night, no idea why since the food here was excellent! I had the veal Ursula and it blew my socks off! First, it was HUGE. I could've easily made 2 meals out of it. But I scarfed down most of it (and the small side of pasta!) and was super satisfied. Wish I had left room for dessert, but I had to get on the road to head on down to my hotel reservation. Tried chicken Parmesan and the special Ursula dish which contains veal, shrimp, mussels and clams. The Ursula dish was very flavorful and the chicken Parmesan was just ok. Chicken was pounded as thin as a schnitzel, and cooked dry. The should have brined the chicken which may have kept it moist. There wasn't enough cheese, even after asking for extra and the cheese was nothing special, just sliced. My only other complaint was that the service was really slow between appetizer and main course. But this was a cute place and I'd like to come back and try some of the other dishes. read more

Mario's lives up to, or maybe exceeds the reviews. I was torn between the Veal Ursula and the lobster ravioli. The waitress suggested, and I got a half order of each. Ursula said the veal was milk fed, but I think it is butter fed. You can cut it with a fork.....no joke. The lobster ravioli was excellent and extremely flavorful. Some delicate pallets may object, but the flavors were worth it. Salad dressing was very flavorful, and I asked for some marinara to dip my bread in, an it was definitely homemade, and in a good way. Forget the crappy parking in the North End. This place tops the 15 places I've tried up there. Sit down in the cozy dining room, enjoy Frank in the background, eat off the red checkered tablecloths, and be prepared to be very pleasantly surprised. Ciao read more
