We've been coming here for at least 20 years. Not many times, but enough to see the place over time. I like the current move to small plates rather than mostly multi course fussy food. Everything we had was pretty much perfect. It's still quite pricey. The service was excellent. The space perfect. Rather than just hand out superlatives, if you are looking for a special night, this place should be at the top of the list. Get the QUAIL! A must. Now that I've said that....What an awesome dinner experience!! The food and service were exceptional. We were completely taken care of, %100 from the moment we sat down until we paid our bill. Our waiter was so helpful explaining everything to us and so attentive, yet not hovering over us. The table setting was so pretty, and then the food started coming out, one dish after another, each one was so different from the next and so good. Beautifully plated. We always had a drink and a plate in front of us. Each dish was so artfully done, such detail, contrast, lots of different items go into each dish producing the most amazing flavors, wow. My favorite was the quail. The breasts were tiny, two bites to each, the sauce over kale and mushrooms, amazing! Ate if before I could take a picture! The Dungeness crab was great too, so much crab! They make everything from scratch on site, like the cheeses and butter, and they smoke their own meats. Everything else they get fresh and local. One of the very best meals I've had, thanks you guys! This one seems to be a bit overhyped. Food was good, maybe a little on the salty side. Found the absence of a tasting menu a little odd for the type of restaurant the Mariposa seems to bill itself as. The good... Diver scallop ceviche (yummy, nough said) Wild mushroom beggar's purse Seared Bison filet (pretty hard to screw up a nice piece of meat, recommend medium rare) The bad... Tomatillo and chile crusted sturgeon fillet (description sounds promising, but when it arrived, the fish was deep fried. Based on the price of the dish, one would expect a very fresh piece of fish, gently and expertly prepared. Might as well have been frozen tilapia fillet deep fried for a basket of fish and chips). One of the best meals I have had ever. Period. The food, ambiance and service in this restaurant was outstanding. Oysters were fresh and delicious. So was the sturgeon which I had as an entree. The bestseller in our table of 15 was the snow ball, a delicious and dangerously addictive chocolate dessert. A must have even if you are not a dessert person. Mariposa is a true culinary gem in the Park City dining scene. Mariposa was recommended to my family by the concierge at Deer Valley Lodges as being the best restaurant in Park City. Since I haven't tried every restaurant in PC, I can't say it's the best (gotta be fair and try them all!), I have a feeling they may be right. We dined at Mariposa the second day after it opened for the winter season. For an appetizer we ordered the fried green tomatoes and butternut squash soup. Both were delightful but the tomatoes, topped with a creamy goat cheese, were something I'd highly recommend. For the main course, I ordered the seared Bison filets topped with foie gras with a parsnip, yam, and yukon gold potato au gratin. It was fantastic and the Bison was cooked to perfection. It was incredibly lean, like Bison should be, and not in the least overcooked or gamey. The presentation was clean, symmetrical and added visual interest to the dish. For dessert, each member at the table ordered a different dish. I shared a salted caramel, chocolate tart that was to die for. The chocolate- soft caramel-crispy tart combination was exquisite and it was by far the best thing I sampled. I was a tad disappointed, however, by the acclaimed chocolate snowball. While good (can't go wrong with moist chocolate cake), it was not something I'd order again. It was pretty average. There were a few snafus at the meal though. My grandfather, who eats super-healthy and kosher, and was limited by most of the menu, ordered a quinoa and mushroom dish. The dish came out cold (in his opinion) and he asked if it could be reheated. The waiter graciously offered to have the kitchen remake it and take it off our bill. However, 20 minutes later it was brought out luke warm! Instead of waiting for another try, we decided to just give up. Unfortunately, this was a blemish on an otherwise wonderful meal. A romantic little restaurant with a glowing fireplace, wooden surroundings and a cozy vibe. My husband and I decided to get the tasting, which included the fried green tomato and ahi tuna appetizers, gnocchi side dish with truffle shavings, the lamb chop main dish, snowball and sorbet desserts. The ahi tuna was good, but it was sitting on top of a large piece of thick bread (which seemed a bit of overkill), and there was too much sea salt sprinkled on top. The gnocchi was delicious, but the added cost of the truffle shavings was definitely not worth it--they tasted like paper. It was disappointing. The lamb chop, I must say, was THE BEST lamb chop I've ever had in my life! Perfectly cooked. Not chewy. Not gamey. Absolutely amazing! I was looking forward to the famous snowball, but at the end of the day, it was just a ball of dense chocolate cake covered in whipped cream. It didn't wow me. However, the sorbet dessert was so interesting, with its finger limes and meringue dusted with chili--I can't remember the actual name, but it was great! Um, sorry folks but this place is highly overrated....I was really excited to take my family and enjoy the experience, what a culinary let down. Kumamoto oysters, way over powered by the shallots in the mignonette. How do you screw up fried green tomatoes? Scallops, well under medium rare, and the bison tenderloins---pretty flavorful, but with all the Gorgonzola the taste of the bison was totally hidden. Good waiter..... More stuff---uncomfortably warm. The decor is turn of the century Utah, all wood environment that evidently features a kitchen upstairs, the staff has to Schupp up and down the stairs all night..it's a bit distracting. My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary shortly after moving to Park City from NYC. I'm a bit of a foodie (and hate myself for using that term), and I admit to being a snob upon moving here and expecting food to be on a much lower level than I am used to. Well - Mariposa was not only excellent for Utah, it was just excellent! We had a wonderful evening with excellent service throughout, and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We are pretty big eaters and were nervous about the small plate sizes, but we left completely satiated and actually skipped dessert because we were full. We had: Oyster Lover's Bliss: 2 oysters (delicious but wouldn't need to try again at $5 an oyster) Maine Lobster Chowder: RIDICULOUS how good this is. Have been craving it ever since. Pan Roasted Scallops: Delicious. Would re-order. Grilled Ahi Filet: Nothing special, although cooked well. Would skip next time. Burrata: Fantastic, and they make it in-house. Sauteed Wild Mushrooms and Quinoa: Would skip next time. Quail Saltimbocca: One of my favorite things I've ever eaten. The miso sauce has addictive properties. Bison Fillet: I do not like foie gras, so my boyfriend ate this one himself. However, he loved it. All 10 people at the table agree, this place offers up great food, great service, great ambiance. As others have mentioned, you pay the price-is it worth it . . .that's a very subjective assessment, but the group I was with agreed that it was. The bison tenderloin was amazing . . .can't remember the name of the sauce that was on it, but I'll just call it awesome sauce. They have some ice cream that is quite unique-caramel, it tastes just like those kraft caramel cubes I used to get at halloween. Most all of the service staff was great, except for this old guy (give him a monocle and he'd be the monopoly guy) he acted if everything was causing him to work, oh bother, or maybe he prefers the jacket and ascot crowd. read more

We heard from our server that they had a new chef and new ownership when We Questioned why the menu was so different. The food tonight was mediocre and the menu was very limited. Had a wonderful meal at this gem of a restaurant. Took our small children, 7 and 9, and were treated well and felt welcome in the cozy atmosphere. Were seated in front of the natural wood burning fire. Waitstaff was excellent. The food was even better!!! We had the scallops, bison and veal. All were cooked to perfection!!! They missed the mark in every way. A 5 star restaurant that has the service and food quality of a 3 star at best. The food is ok. They try to do it fancy in this side "coat closet" of the silver lake lodge at deer valley. It starts with a stale amuse-bouche and they bring out the expensive wine menu that has an above average offering. They ignore most of the Utah liquor laws so you can enjoy the evening. Order your 3-5 course meal up front or as you go. And then the servers, even at a slow time of the night, disappear with three tables seeming to overwhelm them. Ordered a nice bottle of wine, a glass of bubbly and a cocktail. We poured our own wine all night. The food felt almost overly pre- prepared. Stale. The oysters were not fresh. The short rib was fall of the bone because it was almost entirely fat. The potatoes were almost impossible to cut or eat. Did offer a McDonald's French fry like flavor if you're looking for that in $400+ meal. It was like slicing through a thick stack of newspapers. And had the same texture. The bison filet was good. Enjoyed the mushroom beggars purse and the burratta was also good. The Creminelli Prosciutto & Butterleaf Salad was likely just out of season, but also random to the menus overall palate. Wow. But not in a good way. The food was so over-interpreted that everything tasted like hands. My wife and I looked at each other with each "small plate" delivered. Our thoughts were almost audible. "Are we in an SNL skit? Where's Kate?...I thought they said the small plates were slightly bigger than small??" To be fair, the sweet/salty brown butter ice cream was divine. That was the pilón from the pastry chef just before dessert. It was the size of a large marble but expected to be small. I told the waiter it was delicious. He mistook that to mean our entire experience had been sublime. Trust me, there was no correcting his perception. Once I made the statement, a Fabio-like head toss occurred and he became blissfully dissociated as the angels sang in the background. My wife returned to the table asking "why are you snapping your fingers?" The food was definitely no match for the pretense. This was a $350 disappointment. First out of the gate was the well-made beverage unfortunately consisting primarily of a big ball of ice. The bison was good, the rest of the small plates were "meh". Most grating was the exorbitant price for good but not great vino. Check the wine list price before you order the pairing. $18 for a weak-bodied 3oz. noir? Damn. Generally not a great experience for our group. Quality was not there for the prices charged. An $80 wagyu should impress, but no. The rest of the group had ok to good food. The setting and service we're good to excellent but the star of a dining experience should always be the food. Six adults (two not drinking) and a 3 year old should not run up a bill in the mid $800 and come away laughing about how next year we will do pizza. The quail is perfect with a presentation that makes your mouth water. For dessert I had a hojue___ (I don't remember what it's called) and it was INSANE. A very nice dining experience, but not deserving of the "best of deer valley" reputation it has earned. The large central fireplace, wood beams, and soft lighting make The Mariposa warm and cozy. It's the most memorable dining room we visited in Deer Valley. The food was very good, but did not wow the table, as I expected it to from all reviews I had read... The 5 course tasting menu featured two filo pastry dishes that were both nice, but a bit pedestrian, and to me, a tasting menu should showcase the breadth of the chef's skills and interests. Sometimes dishes were introduced well to the table, other times, they were placed down without explanation. Service was knowledgable but not as friendly or accommodating as at Glitretind (to me a better option in deer valley) and was a bit stuffy. The Bison Filets were so decorated with Foie Gras, onion, cheese, and red wine reduction, that I wasn't able to appreciate the fact that it was a unique meat. I would definitely be excited to go back, but it would not be at the top of my Deer Valley list. read more

Dined during a huge snowstorm....more of a blizzard, so the crowd was low key, but excited nonetheless. Knew the waiter (in a roundabout way, but that certainly helped, as he was a cool guy, not trying to overly impress) We shared the tasting menu as she had the vegetarian/fish option and I went for the meat option......both came pretty close in our reviews, but I think the Meat option won. Obviously a pricey joint, and those that make 7 figures probably dine like this on a regular basis....but our meal was more of an experience, 4 hours worth. This is a special occasion the restaurant. It was a special occasion. The food was good, but not out of this world, and the price point was very high. It is Deer Valley after all. My husband's son had just proposed, and we were celebrating. The staff was very nice and accommodating of my many food allergies. It is a very fancy tapas style restaurant. Read: regular entree price, tapas size serving. There ended up being only about 3 things on the menu I could eat. That's all fine and they did a fine job. I had a special version of the chicken and it was a bit tough, plus I'm pretty sure those weren't potatoes I had on the side, and if they were they were really terrible. Mine were a completely different consistency than my dining companions. I do check menus before I dine and the menu I saw was different than the menu that was currently being used. It would have also been good if I had seen some notation of the portion size prior to dining. The ambiance felt forced, and the restaurant is small. If you need to use the restroom you must go out to the lobby area, through a cafeteria type area and down a flight of stairs. They do not rush you here- We had a 6:30 reservation and did not leave until almost 9, honestly I didn't enjoy it, it was too slow. They do not charge a corkage fee on the first bottle of wine, so that's a nice plus. Honestly, I chose this place because all the other higher end Deer Valley reservations were taken and that was a week++ out. Keep that in mind when making plans in this are during high season. read more

I was recently in Park City for some end of season snowboarding, and had the excellent fortune to go to The Mariposa.I don't typically give 5 stars to anything, however Mariposa is well deserving. Located at the Silver Lake Lodge, it is fairly small and maintains a ski lodge feeling well. Mariposa is unique because the menu is primarily small portion plates (tapas style) and they recommend about 3-4 plates per person. I got by just fine with a shared appetizer and 3 plates. The service was EXCELLENT! All staff was very prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable about all dishes, wines, cocktails, and even brought a special desert for my sister's birthday. The tapas style plates were phenomenal. I had the great fortune to try the scallops, the fois gras soup, and the bison filet as well. Each of these dishes was 5 star. The scallops were perfectly seasoned, and tender to the fork. The fois gras soup was rich but not overpowering, and the bison was flavorful and tender as well. This is absolutely a 5 star restaurant with a 5 star chef. The only downside is they are only open during Ski season! Thanks Mariposa! read more

"Best Restaurant in Utah- Zagat" Is an understatement. When we walked in we were offered a coat storage service. We called in earlier to say we would be late, an they accommodated perfectly. The wait was close to two minutes while they readied our table. We walked pass a wall of wine storage to lead into a (surprisingly small, but very comfortable and warming/elegant) dining room. We were seated and waited immediately by a very nice woman. She explained the whole small plates system, and explained the whole menu before we ordered. At first I was quite disappointed by the small plates systems because I hadn't eaten all day, but in the end 5 courses, (including dessert and complementary bread) hit the spot perfectly. While we waited for our first item Lobster Chowder, we were handed a basket of sliced house made daily bread, along with the explanations of them, and some homemade butter with pink salt. Along with the bread came flax seed crackers, (a total turn off at first) but as I tasted them they were so amazing. I could've eaten them for every meal. The chowder came in close to four minutes and was eaten in close to two. I'd have to say it is the best soup/bisque/chowder/etc. i've eaten in my life. It has no fishy taste, (like old lobster tends to have), and it had a very creamy taste. I believe it had gruyere or Brie in it. After we were finished with that, we gave our massive complements to the waitress, and again were served our next course in under 4 minutes. I had the lemon gnocchi, while my partner had the beggars purse. The gnocchi once again, the best gnocchi I've ever had, (you'll see a trend that in every course, it will be the best one I've ever had). It was so tender, yet not mushy and was covered in lemon sauce and Parmigiano, and it was very delicious. The beggars purse had a beaujolais sauce and triple crème truffle Brie which was housemade also. (ANYTHING WITH THE TRIPLE CRÈME TRUFFLE BRIE IS WORTH GETTING). It has a nutty bitter taste to it, with umami notes of truffle. The next was our salads, which were very delicious. I had the hearts of romaine, while my partner had the pork belly salad. The salad, once again was amazing with a rich Cesar dressing, Spanish anchovies, tempered duck egg yolks, and rosemary olive bread crostinis. Once again, delicious! The pork belly had a scrumptious sweet maple glaze and we devoured it. After our salads, we were offered more bread and butter until our next courses came, again in under 4 minutes. I ordered the bison, and I cannot stress enough how delicious it was. It had squash, radish, miso kale, the infamous triple crème brie, foie gras, a Cabernet reduction, and radish. The steak was incredibly tender, and the only time I used my knife for that part was just to cut the radish into smaller pieces. The foie gras was very good, and surprisingly refreshing. Also, all their wine sauces, (unlike most other restaurants) have a silky smooth, uniform texture, and still retain the original fullness and notes of the original wines. After our courses we were offered some dessert menus and desert wine lists. We ordered the chocolate snowball, and the pear almond layered cake, (dusted with gold flakes). The snowball had a slight bitterness to it, cut out by the cream, and the pear almond cake had a strong almond taste, and was very moist and fluffy. After dessert were were given sugar almond discs, complements of the bakery, very delicious and crisp. The whole restaurant blew me off my feet and made me seriously question were the Michelin star reviewers were. Throughout the whole night, we laughed and chatted with the very well educated, yet kind waiters and staff. I was in paradise at the Mariposa, and I sigh in awe every time I yearn to go back. 9,000% I would recommend. Management decided to correct their mistake in a big way. They offered my parents a free dinner for making the mistake on their next trip to Park City. My parents ate at Mariposa tonight and said the food was DIVINE. They also said management and the staff could not have been nicer. The portions were small, but my mom disclosed that everything was absolutely delicious and she did not mind the portion sizes at all because of how tasty it was. I love when I have the opportunity to correct a review like this one. I hope that management realizes what a great choice it is to react like this to mistakes and keeps up the awesome work of genuinely pleasing their customers like they did tonight. two thumbs up mariposa. read more

The food here is fantastic but the concept that it is a tasting menu is a little off. The portions were still very large. I had soup, red snapper, gnocchi, and then ribeye. I ordered (at the beginning) four courses thinking tasting but couldn't finish my last course bc I was so dam full. At the price you pay, you want to finish every morsel b/c it really is amazing food. The cadence of the servers was way off maybe b/c we were an 8 p.m. setting. The ambience was ok. The food is five star, service and ambience are a three. I wish I would have had room for dessert. read more

Mixed bag for us. Service was 5 stars, food and atmosphere were 3.5. While I love the incredible variety of the menu, I don't much like the "tasting" format. The menu states that you should order 4-5 items. Unless you're starving, I'd say that's a bit much. It will result in a huge bill and a 3hr event- something I think is a little insane after a day on the mountain (which the restaurant should understand). We expressed our timing concern to our server and he did a fantastic job of getting things out quickly, doubling up some of my husbands items to stay on pace with me (he had 5, I had 3). The food itself was generally tasty but quite heavy and old fashioned - lots of things piled on top of each other with multiple sauces (brie, fois gras and sauce on top of meat? Overkill). Not my favorite type of food, but if you like that kind of stuff, they do it pretty well here. Positive note - wine list is great and there are plenty of good deals, especially for a fancy Deer Valley spot. read more

My family used to come here all the time when we would vacation in Park City, but we skipped it in out normal dining reservations for about 5 years. But by a stroke of luck and a snow storm , we're back! We walked in one evening when it was snowing too hard and we didn't want to go downtown. The food was fabulous and Deer Valley service is obviously the best! I had their sea bass that they are known for and it was delicious. Interestingly enough our waiter explained that because the restaurant is part of the Deer Valley resort, their budget is one and the same, so they are not restricted as to food costs etc. Therefore they strive very hard to have the best ingredients and food. Upon rediscovering Mariposa's greatness, I tried to remember why we wanted a change in the first place - The Atmosphere. It's in the main ski lodge of deer valley, so it has a lot of the same decorative style. If you are only in town for a few days, this will probably not bother you, but if you've skied Deer Valley as much as I have and eaten lunch in the dining area, you will be wanting a change of scenery come dinner time. I do have to say, it is cozy and on a snowy night it hit the spot! read more

Only thing that killed me is the lack of ambience. We were the first diners in the dining room and there was no music. So, when nobody was talking, we could hear the servers talking about food, wine, etc. Low music could really create a warmer atmosphere. read more

I only leave reviews if I have had a very good or very bad experience. This was one of our most disappointing meals and it cost us over $500 for two people. We live in Park City and I had been wanting to try this restaurant. So, we went for New Year's when there was a set menu for $160 per person. The wine pairing was $110 per person for small 3 oz pours, which we passed on. The chef seemed to be trying WAY too hard and yet the food was not great. Our server was very nice, but the service was patchy...took forever between courses and most of the food came out lukewarm. They forgot to bring our coffee and we had to remind them. The atmosphere is cozy, but very (old school) Deer Valley. I went to the bathroom and had to walk through a freezing cold cafeteria to get to it. Overall a very disappointing experience, especially at the price. read more

The food is innovative and tasty, but portions are quite small as the menu is intended to be a tasting menu. Each on the menu has a recommended wine pairing. We were advised by our waiter that 4-5 plates are the equivalent of a traditional entree. This estimate is reasonably accurate--at least 3 plates will likely be needed to feel satiated. The primary reason for our middling rating is the poor service. We were sitting for about 10 minutes after ordering, waiting for our drinks and bread (which was cold). The quinoa mushroom dish was lukewarm, as was the squash soup (special of the day). Both were brought out service staff other than our server, leading us to suspect that it had been sitting in the kitchen unattended to by our server. Both dishes were flavorful and interesting, even if the temperature was not optimal. We didn't complain about this, because we didn't want to deal with further delay of our meal. Most disappointing was the delay in serving the glass of cabernet that my wife had specifically selected to pair with her filet mignon. The steak arrived first, and so she waited for a few minutes for the wine to arrive. After about 3-4 minutes, she started to consume her steak, concerned it would start to cool. After a couple of bites, we successfully flagged down the waiter to ask for her wine. She had slowly, expectantly, consumed about half the steak before the wine finally arrived. When we told him that this was poor service, he agreed and said that the problem was that the bartender hadn't poured the wine and that he couldn't pour drinks. There was no attempt to try to make up for this failure, as we might expect from an upscale restaurant (or even a middle-of-the road one that values customer satisfaction. With improved service, specifically, timely service of food and drink, and greater attentiveness to its patrons, this restaurant would deserve a 4-5 point rating. Addendum: Since posting my review, I have been contacted directly by the restaurant management. They apologized for our disappointing experience, and graciously refunded us the full cost of our meal. read more
