    Upon with tempura
    Sejin C.

Located inside South Coast Plaza, this udon spot is a great value, especially for a restaurant in the mall. I wouldn't say it's the best udon you'll ever have, but it's definitely tasty and more than satisfying for a quick meal. I went to the mall by myself yesterday and was looking for something simple to eat. Ordering just plain udon felt like it would be lacking in protein, but the beef or chicken katsu udon sounded a little too heavy and greasy for what I wanted. So I ordered a regular Plain Udon and added a soft-boiled egg. Then I stopped by the tempura station and picked up a tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet) tempura and a piece of kabocha squash tempura. The regular plain udon was only $5.99, which is an amazing deal. Load it up with the green onions and crunchy tempura flakes from the toppings station, and it's surprisingly delicious. With the soft-boiled egg and the tamagoyaki tempura, I was able to add a little extra protein, and my total came to around $18. Considering today's prices, I thought that was very reasonable. Overall, the food was good, the meal was satisfying, and I left happy. If you're shopping at South Coast Plaza and want something quick, affordable, and comforting, this is definitely a solid choice.

For the first time customer, it can be a little confusing on how to order. Best way to describe it is like a cafeteria food line. You order your udon, grab a tray, slide it down to the tempura aisle, and then you pay. Food was surprisingly fresh and so tasty. The broth was so smooth and clean but carried lots of flavor. I enjoyed the tempura dishes as well! Pro tip, dip your tempura in the both as you eat so it doesn't get too soggy!

What's not to love here!!! Some of the best udon I've ever had, you take a tray and go down the food line. Ordering as you go, and watch it prepared fresh right before you. With more than just wonderful udon options, different tempura varieties, katsu and more. Once you pay you seat yourself and there is an island with condiments, utensils and drinks. We loved it here, and definitely will come back. Located inside the South Coast Plaza Mall first floor by the escalators below Starbucks. Also very affordable!

We first had Marugame when we lived up in SF, so we were stoked when they opened this location years ago and have frequented multiple times since (especially since it's right across from our favorite store - Uniqlo). It's cafeteria-ish style where you get a tray and they prepare your udon on the spot and you have the option to add toppings like green onion and/or tempura flakes. There's also an assortment of tempura to choose from to pair with your udon. I tried the curry udon for the first time and enjoyed it a lil too much because I had gotten a large with the intention of leftovers... but that didn't happen (and myself and my boyfriend walked out feeling uncomfortably full lol). I'd also gotten a chicken katsu that went nicely with the curry~ The regular Nikutama is typically my go-to as I like the addition of the soft-boiled egg with the beef udon, so I'd also recommend that!

My favorite Chicken Katsu Teriyaki is back! Would love to have it in a larger bowl option.

Whenever I crave udon, Marugame Udon hits the spot. The food is delicious. Their freshly made in-house, right in front of you noodles are perfectly chewy. The service is quick. And best of all, it's kids-approved. 1. Nikutama - Savory simmered beef, sweet onions, and a silky soft-boiled egg. Yum. 5. Creamy Broth - Tonkotsu style - Creamy chicken broth, topped with juicy pork chashu, and a flavorful seasoned egg. My favorite! 10. Kake - Served with comforting umami-rich dashi broth. My kids love this dish.

Great tasting food, like I always remember it. Tempuras are pricey and not worth the value, esp the 'big' chicken katsu which has shrunk in size. Udon itself is great value. Cramped restaurant

Some of the best tasting Udon on the planet... and you don't have to wait in a long line in Waikiki to try some... conveniently located in South Coast Plaza right below Din Tai Fung... freshly made Udon noodles and I love getting it with Chashu and a soft boiled egg... ramen style... give it a try if you're in the area.

This is my favorite udon spot ever! The service is always fast and efficient, which makes the experience even better. There are plenty of seating areas, but it does get super packed on weekends, so I'd definitely keep that in mind when planning a visit. Despite the crowds, the food quality stays consistent and fresh. The udon noodles are always perfectly cooked with an ideal chewy texture. The tempura is also a highlight, super crispy and so good when paired with the warm, comforting udon. Overall, it's a spot I keep coming back to!

They have new item, clam udon. Amazing!! I am glad they have something else than meat. Been a fan before they opened in OC and only in Honolulu back then. So I have been having way too many basic items. Still love miso and beef with onsen egg. But clam has lighter and refreshing taste instead of sweet dashi taste. They give lots of clams which is nice. I hope they will keep this item as it's really good. Service was fast. I'm impressed with the worker at the cashier and frying station. The fried chicken was not oily and good. I am impressed not salty but well balanced.

    Tina N.

When I get hungry at SCP I usually stop by for udon because the service is quick and it is inexpensive. The line goes by quickly. They have other other options other than udon and it is nice to see them make it for you.

Wonderful udon that hits the spot on cold days! Love the self serve tempura station! The shrimp is always a hit! Plenty of seating and the service is great too

I Like this style restaurant where you go down the line and build your bowl and select your sides. It's super quick and efficient and ensures hot fresh options. I've come here many times and the udon is always great and very flavorful.

Ask the Community - Marugame Udon

If im picking up a prepaid online togo order, do i have to wait in the line to pick up my food or can i just skip to the front and pick it up?

Skip the line to pickup. There's a sign

Does this place have outdoor seating in 2024? Thank you!

    Unfortunately, they don't.

Is this the same place as the one in Waikiki?

Hi George, thank you for reaching out~ YES! We are the same brand and delicious Sanuki-Style udon and tempura that is in Waikiki. Just a little closer to home :)

What are the vegan or vegetarian options at this location and what are their names?

Their menu lists the following as Vegan... 1. Miso Udon…

Is tan tan made with pork broth?

No it is a vegan soup made from an onion and vegetable base.

For the vegan udon, does it come with the ground soy or is it something I have to request? I came here on 7/21/22 but my bowl just came with the udon, vegan broth, and green onion topping that I asked for.

It comes with the ground soy If something is missing you can ask the cashier and they will help you

For the Gluten Intolerant, are the udon noodles made with wheat flour? Thank you in advance

    Yes and with salt water

Is there anyway I can make a reservation for june 26?

No reservations, it is more of a get in line, order, pay, then find a seat. Not an average restaurant.

Are they still making the mentai udon?

    Yes!

Are they available for dine in now?

Yes they are. Tables are socially distance

Are they doing indoor dining now?

For the south coast plaza as of last weekend, we were able to order and bring it outdoors. They have some tables set up in the outside near the parking garage. 30 sec walk.

Is the food court opened for dine in?

    Dine in is available 10/2022

How are they handling takeout orders? Best to call or order online? Also heard the lines are confusing. Is there a specific line for order pickup?

When you order through our marugameudon.com platform you will save money. You can place your order and pick it up in store. You can even make a phone order, come to the front of the line, make your payment and retrieve your food. Weekends are busier.

Why aren't they making the Onigiris, especially the Mentaiko Mayo?? Same as serving Tempura...

We do have them, come on in today and get a few. Hope to see you soon. Chef Kay

Are there any gluten free options or noodles?

    no.

Is this place open because of covid 19? Take out of dinning in?

Yes! As of September 28th, they said they offer "dine-in at 25% capacity, takeout, online ordering, curbside pickup, and delivery via UberEats, Doordash, Grubhub and Postmates."

    Do they have vegan udon?

No. Their broth has a fish base. If you're vegan just ask for the noodles only.

Whats your vegan udon? So you still have the vegan curry udon?

    Only beef curry now.

Does anyone know if the Kake sauce is vegetarian friendly? Might be a stupid question, smh but thought i would ask.

The Kake sauce is vegan and includes; shichimi togarashi (red-pepper spice), soy sauce, and Mirin (sake). The soy sauce and sake used to make the Kake sauce is also vegan 👍🏼

I have a severe sesame allergy, are there options here for me?

No visible sesame in there broth but I cannot eat sesame cause stomach problem. But ask if there a choice I think they have to answer you. Their broth n noodles are delicious. Call please

I loved: House Congee Crab…read more Earl Grey Iced Latte Vox Pear Salad Parmesan Chicken Wings I really liked: Garlic Noodles Prawn Lychee Lemonade Lychee Lemonade Spicy I liked: Calamari Saltado Fries Filet Mignon The House Congee Crab was easily one of my favorites. There's a lot going on in the bowl, but all the flavors and ingredients come together really well without overpowering each other. Most importantly, they don't skimp on the crab. You can actually taste it throughout, and it adds so much to the congee. I also really enjoyed the Vox Pear Salad. Refreshing, crisp, and made with noticeably good-quality ingredients, it's a nice contrast to some of the heavier dishes on the table. The Parmesan Chicken Wings were another strong choice. They have a satisfying crunch on the outside while staying packed with flavor, making them very easy to keep reaching for. Garlic lovers should definitely consider the Garlic Noodles Prawn because the garlic does not hide in the background here. The noodles carry plenty of that garlicky flavor, while the large prawns hold their own and taste great alongside them. The Saltado Fries Filet Mignon were more middle of the pack for me. The filet came out medium with a good chew and plenty of flavor, but the fries could have used more crispiness. They weren't soggy, just softer than I would have preferred. The Calamari had a nicely seasoned, crispy coating as well, though some pieces leaned a little dry. For drinks, the Earl Grey Iced Latte is a must. Sweet, fragrant, and full of Earl Grey flavor, this was easily my favorite drink of the meal. Both Lychee Lemonades were enjoyable too, with enough lychee coming through that it doesn't get buried underneath the lemonade. There is some pulp in the drink, which I personally don't mind, but pulp haters should be aware. As for the spicy version, don't let its appearance scare you. The added spices make it look much more intimidating than it tastes because the actual heat level barely changes. Service ended up being a bit hit or miss. Dishes came out quickly, so we never spent much time waiting around for the next thing to arrive. The smaller details weren't quite as consistent, though. Water got spilled on our table at one point, and things like straws and utensils were occasionally forgotten. Vox has an interesting setup with a bar, traditional indoor seating, and an outdoor dining area that feels like a converted mall entrance. We chose to sit outside, which was pleasant and gave us plenty of space, but being right next to the street means some dust comes with the territory. Overall, the setting is a little unconventional, but the stronger dishes, especially that congee, made the meal worth it.

Slightly sweet light flavor "In between a beer and cider if order again". We ordered the calamari, chicken wings (Parmesan that came with garlic), hamachi tostada, ribeye garlic noodles, shrimp and pork wontons (steamed) and the seasonal special scallops. The food was amazing!!! The calamari was pretty average, but had a good portion size!! We ordered 2 hamachi tostadas because they were so good. The tuna was fresh, the sauces were amazing, and the crunch of the tostada was amazing! Highly recommend! The garlic noodles were an 8/10. Steak was good and the noodles were a good portion. Chicken wings were very flavorful and the parm/garlic made it. Highly recommend! The wontons were also an 8/10. Really good flavor/sauce in the dish also recommended. The scallops were memorable. They were on the special menu and it was trulyyyy so delicious and just as fresh as the tostada. I hope they still have it cause you need to try it and the flavors. It was my bf birthday and they gave him a matcha cheesecake with caramel drizzle. It was the perfect size and not too rich or sweet. Delectable our experience was amazing overall and the outdoor seating was very nice under the tree with nice lighting.

My bf got the marble coffee, he said it was pretty good as well. Then we had calamari, spicy wontons and THE DAO. Calamari was plentiful in serving, comes with a sauce and I really liked their sauce, it has citrusy taste. The spicy wontons are a crowd favorite as well for me. It definitely puts it on the top spot of spicy wontons I've tried from other spots. THE DAO (yes, it needed the caps lock on the name), this is my top appetizer from this cafe. Asian fusion can be hit or miss, but AnQi absolutely nails it. What I appreciate most is that they never lose sight of the Asian flavours that inspired the dishes. Instead of masking them, they build on them with unique combinations that feel intentional and exciting rather than gimmicky. The cocktails deserve their own shoutout too. Love love Anqi Bistro at SCP!…read more Always amazing service from beginning to end and loved both recent visits for lunch and then another weekend for their Sunday Brunch Buffet which I think sadly concluded on the August 1st/2nd weekend since it was just a summer thing. Props to Jose for making extra flavors of dumplings and egg rolls during the buffet even tho it was near the tail-end of service! The Yuzu lemonade is super refreshing too and definitely recommend checking their weekday lunch specials too cos the Ribeye fried rice was soooo yummy
