I had a really disappointing experience and the overall cleanliness of this location seriously concerned me. The restaurant looked extremely dirty and poorly maintained during my visit. The water/ice machine had visible buildup and residue around it, the beverage area was dirty, and toppings/condiments were placed right next to the water and coffee machines where there were spills and messes. The condiment station, counters, and food service areas had food debris, liquid, stains, and buildup that did not appear to be cleaned regularly. There were also three male employees working at the front who were visibly sweating heavily while working around and preparing exposed food. I did not see a proper way for them to manage the perspiration, and their head coverings did not appear adequate for keeping hair and sweat away from the food. The work area itself was also very messy and did not look well maintained. On top of the sanitation concerns, my actual food was terrible. The employee preparing my bowl did not dip/warm the bowl in the hot water before serving it, so my soup ended up cold. The noodles were also overcooked and had a poor texture. Meat was very little as per usual. Between the cold soup, overcooked noodles, and everything I observed regarding cleanliness, I ended up throwing away my entire meal. I understand restaurants get busy, but this was beyond a normal rush-hour mess and it was quite empty in the restaurant. When you are serving food in an open kitchen where customers can see the preparation process, cleanliness and food handling should be taken seriously. Management really needs to address sanitation, equipment cleaning, employee hygiene, and food preparation at this location.
Food, Ambience = 3; Service = 4 2nd visit w/my elder dad for late lunch (2pm) before mani pedi. While there was handicap parking near entrance, the center owner poorly designed ramp position putting a burden on folks using wheelchairs and walkers to walk farther and backtrack than necessary. Didn't review after first visit in late 2025 as thought it was an off day and food didn't move me. Last time, I had to let staff know ran out of utensils and towels ran out in bathroom. There are many other dining options in center. If craving udon or rice bowl (new offering since last visit) or not feeling other cuisine options then can settle for this fast casual Japanese place. While understanding menu options, ordering & getting staff attention were effortless, the space was dirty with discarded paper items throughout the restaurant's floor, most of vacant tables had food residue, & condiment area that was covered with the tempura crunch, green onion, ginger & tempura sauce. The staff was responsive and was kind when I asked for a cleaning rag to wipe our dining area and brought to her attention that condiment area need cleaning, organizing. Unsure if short staffed or not adhering to cleaning schedule guidelines.I wonder what grade they would get if my public health colleague visited. The food is palatable; however, pricier than sit down Japanese lunch specials from our favorite restaurants or in J town. While I will dine at other options in the center, this place is fine and will not discourage folks.
I've been to Marugame Udon before but this is my first time to this location. We arrived during peak lunch hour and it wasn't too busy. The line took no more than 10 minutes to order our food, select our add-ons and pay. After we got a seated, we went to the refreshment/toppings/utensil area to get utensils, green onions, garlic and fried tempura bits. Water is also self serve there. The noodles were fresh with a little bit of al dente bite. The broth was clear and so flavorful. The sweet beef was not overcooked and had lots of flavor. The Onsen Tamago (egg) was Soft, custardy and cooked perfectly to mixed well into the soup. Although it wasn't that busy, there are plenty of seats inside and some seats outside. The only thing I saw that might bother some people was the Tray Return area started to pile up. Since nobody was consistently there to tend to that area, people started piling up their bowls not putting things away properly. I could see this becoming a hazard if things were to tip over because of careless customers. I also don't recall anyone coming around to wipe tables. Maybe I was just too focused on eating. Nonetheless, we had a good lunch and wouldn't mind coming here again.
The udon noodle soup was lukewarm at best but it was truly concerning see some unsanitary practices. The self-service green onions and tempura flakes bar was poorly maintained. There weren't dedicated spots for the scoops so customers were just dumping them back into the containers after holding them, with the dirty handles touching the food.
Came out to San Jose for some lunch with my friend today. The restaurant is pretty big and has plenty of seatings. Service is was good. Cafeteria style, you get in line and order you udon and they make it and put it on a tray and slide it to you. Go down the line and pick your fried items if you would like any and slide down to the end to pay. I got the tama toma curry udon today. It's a curry Tomato base flavor and it was delicious! I love it! The udon was bouncy and delicious! I also got the fried pumpkin piece to try. The batter was not my favorite so I took that off and ate the pumpkin with my udon. My friend ordered the curry udon, fried shrimp and a fried sweet potato for her lunch and she said everything was great. Definately a delicious spot for a drop in lunch!
The food here was hot and fresh ! I got the Nikutama and it was really good the udon was chewy and the soup was hot the flavor of the broth was really flavorful and I enjoyed it a lot. I got tempted by the tempura and got the shrimp tempura and sweet potato tempura ! Both were still really hot and fresh it was really good as well. I really liked the udon and broth with the egg it tasted really good. However, some tables were really dirty, they were out of the tempura toppings and there was stacks and stacks of dirty dishes at the tray area and there was barely any room to put you bowls and trays there. Finally a worker came by and started washing them so the bowls and trays finally went down and people were able to put their bowls and trays there otherwise I think if they didn't clean it soon it would've piled up lol
We tried this place when we were in Hawaii many years ago. We really enjoyed the ease and affordability, especially since we were traveling with extended family. With it just being myself, my husband, and our dog, we were pleasantly surprised that they had an outdoor space that was pet friendly! We went at night and it was cooler so they had the heater on. It was just too much for us so we did ask them to turn it off which they politely obliged. My husband went in and ordered both of our meals and I was very specific that we had to have the shrimp temper again. The meal definitely did not disappoint. The shrimp tempura was crispy and filling. We did opt for the gyoza but it was the least favorite of what we had so I let my husband eat the rest. The space outside was mostly clean and uninhabited. Our table could have been wiped down though.
When we arrived, we waited in a long ish line to order, but it moved quickly. It's an assembly line, so one person takes your order and you can watch another person add broth then another adds toppings to your udon. The staff member who took our order was efficient, but all of the other employees kind of slowed down the process. He was really trying to move the line along though which we appreciated. Once you get your food, you can choose any tempura, and then you pay for everything at the end. You also order drinks at the end. They had samples of their calamansi and pineapple sunrise. Both delicious! Lastly, you pick your seat and can go to the station on the side for water, ice, and complementary green onion, tempura flakes, and grated ginger and wasabi. We ordered #5 creamy broth - tonkatsu style, #6 tan tan, and a piece of zucchini tempura. #5 is one of their most loved menu items. The difference between the regular and large size is one extra piece of chashu. #6 is vegan and comes with veggies, a spicy broth, and ground "meat". I really like #6 and I'm not vegan! The broth is not too spicy and it's soooo flavorful for a vegan dish. I added 1/2 a seasoned egg for $1.99 for some extra protein. The tables are placed pretty close to each other, so I had to suck in when I stepped between my table and my neighbor's to leave. Overall good experience and I would come back because the food is so yummy! In total, our order was approx $50 ish.
Awful location, the worst of all Marugame Udons. The serving area was a complete mess, they want to up-charge you with cold crappy vegetables and call it "fresh", the staff couldn't care less, they gave me the order of the person behind me and switched it. The condiment station was unusable. All tables were messy and are not cleaned regularly.
Food was great, service is quick, and there's plenty of space inside and out. We really enjoyed the fresh noodles and how easy and quick it is to get a meal here. Highly recommend the curry udon.
I am sorry. One star for this location. Was here for lunch with friend today, A tall guy served us and then disappeared. Another guy took over our order and used his gloved hands to split the egg in half instead of cutting it; later, when I was about to pay, the cashier wasn't there; and then the same guy from before came and typed in the numbers with the same gloved hands he used to split the egg. Really??? ....i felt sick and told him that's not right and thought he will make me a new one for me. Sadly, nothing. Me and my friend felt uncomfortable. Then, while leaving, there's no space on their recycle shelf. (It's huge mess. ) we had to stack up other dirty bowls to make the room)
Love the fresh udon at Marugame! I'll admit, i only really like their standard broth with udon and a side of shrimp tempura because you can really taste the noodles. I've tried their tomato curry and it wasn't it. Too thick and felt more like a gravy with a side of noodles. Anyways, if we're talking about their regular kake udon, amazing. Likely won't try anything else :p

First time and I literally inhaled it! Got the creamy broth with a side of gyoza and shrimp tempura. Asked for chili oil but they had some paste type spicy peppers so that did its job. Wasn't spicy, but really enjoyed the broth. Can't wait to return to try other broths! Oh and the shrimp tempura.....BE BEST! read more

It's a simple cafeteria-style udon place. You order your udon, pay at the counter and take the tray to any open tables available. It's reasonably priced and quick. They have a water/ice station with tempura sauce, utensils and napkins. There is a nice outdoor areas for seating too. This place can get crowded over the weekend and the line gets long outside the door too. During peak time, parking can be hard to find. The parking lot isn't that big with all the shops in the same complex and some space are pretty tight. Plan accordingly when you come. read more
Great option for quick and cozy udon! This is a cafeteria style restaurant, where you order at the front, they make the food in front of you, and you pay right there. Service was pretty fast for a weekend and it was easy to find a seat after paying. Pretty much everything is self serve, including the utensils, water, and sauces. I ordered the Nikutama with fresh veggies on the side, and it delicious! The broth is definitely on the sweeter side (which I personally like). It's more of a "saucey" broth so it can get a little salty after having a few bites. Noodles were the perfect bouncy texture. I do feel like they could have been more generous with the meat though, since I finished that quite fast. Their tamagoyaki tempura was great as well--sweet and not too oily. I like how this spot is casual and you can easily get a large bowl of noodles for cheap. What you have to be careful are the extra items like the protein or eggs or tempura. That's where they get you. But I liked the options. I definitely would get a regular plain bowl of udon and add whatever toppings I like or just go plain if I'm feeling like it. The Cheese Katsu Tomatama Curry udon wasn't my favorite but I'm glad I tried it. I overall like the restaurant and it's very spacious too which is nice for seating. read more

Yummy! Wonderful for a quick bite but not fast food in the traditional sense. Fresh udon noodles prepared as you ordered. We had the creamy broth and Nikutama. The nikutama felt heartier and has a nice sweet flavor from the onions. The creamy broth was delicious. Chicken Katsu was a large piece which was good for value and tasted freshly made. Service was excellent and overall place is clean! P.S for families, there is a diaper changing table but outside of the bathroom read more

So happy to finally be able to try this iconic restaurant. We arrived around 4:30 pm on a Friday and the restaurant seemed seemingly empty. Remnants of long winding outdoor lines told us we were very lucky. There were plenty of tables and the ambiance was very much a modern Chinese restaurant. We loved the different choices and were a little overwhelmed. The little warming area of the fried foods really reminded us of Japan! We ordered everything to-go and it was packaged very well. I will say the some of the packaging didn't withstand the heat of the food but there were no spills or leaks, just some plastic deformity. Offerings: - Nikutama: I absolutely loved this dish. Perfectly QQ noodles with tender beef and fresh toppings. The broth really reminded me of sukiyaki and was a tiny bit too salty, but I still ate every bite! - Kake: a very simple broth but the udon noodles were delicious! - Spam Musubi: perfectly simple and what you would expect. Can't complain. - Chicken Katsu: we ordered a fried chicken katsu just to snack on while waiting for our other to-go food. It was a little over fried, possibly from sitting under a heat lamp, but we liked it nonetheless. The staff were friendly and patient with us as we figured out what we wanted. They were even accommodating when we tried to order away from the to-go order station. Apparently there is a different line/window in the back of the store. I would totally go back to try other things. It really does live up to the hype. read more

I got the worst food poisoning here last week. Projectile vomiting and diarrhea for a week. Reported to the health department and the health department found several serious violations of food improperly stored and not at correct temperature. Also employee was actively sick and working. Please avoid if you value your health. Also please note they are currently propping open the doors so you can't see their health department violation notice which is incredibly deceptive. I will be reporting them again for hiding this notice. read more

Was a big fan of Valley Fair's Marugame Udon so I thought I'd give this location a try as well. It was my first time ordering dine-in as opposed to take out, and the servers were very friendly. One of them had also recommended me to get the egg spam musubi, which was worth the extra amount of money that I had to pay. The atmosphere of this Marugame Udon felt relatively homely while also being paritally crowded, but I was able to find a clean and empty table to eat my food in. The food tasted just as good as it was at the other Marugame, and the vegetables (mixed with some sauce that they offered in a packet) and the spam musubi was a nice additional touch. I left the restaurant feeling very fulfilled. Overall a very pleasant experience. Would recommend this location if you're a fan of Marugame or are in the mood to have udon in Cupertino. Parking can be a bit difficult though, but it could be better on a less crowded day. read more

Marugame Udon is located in The Crossing plaza, close to Chicha San Chen, Home Eat, Philz Coffee, etc. This is the 3rd location in the South Bay. This brings back fond memories of the first time eating it in Honolulu, Hawaii. Luckily, we went early so there wasn't much of a line. A nice large restaurant. Inside and outside dining options. Two separate men and women restrooms. Cafeteria style dining - line up, order udon or rice bowl, then as you go down the line to pick up deep-fried items like shrimp tempura, asparagus tempura, gyoza, etc and attentive the end, you pay the cashier. *Nikutama (large = double noodles): Sanuki-style Udon served in our Umami-rich (flavor-packed) sauce. Can be enjoyed hot or cold (4/5). The udon has a nice chewy bite to it. The soup is very flavorful and rich yet without the heaviness. *Chicken Katsu (4/5) - thigh meat was tender and juicy but with that nice breading on the outside. *Potato Croquette (4/5) - nice batter crunch with creamy inside. Easier access at this location than in Valley Fair. read more
Came by for lunch the other day and it was a decent experience. Marugame Udon is a Japanese-owned chain from Japan. They have branches in Japan, including at Haneda Airport! Parking is plentiful in the private lot. Ordering is done with the cook that wears nitrile gloves. There is a selection of hot tempura to grab before heading to the cashier. Tables were plentiful inside the restaurant as well as on the patio. Portions were gigantic. Udon noodles were decent, in line with a chain udon shop. The shop was better in Japan. The tempura was decent. read more

Quick, easy, and yummy! Seems the prices went up a bit but still quite reasonable. You line up and order like a cafeteria lunch and pay at the end of the line then find a seat. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The udon noodles are nice and QQ and they portion everything very consistently! read more
I had no idea this restaurant was a chain! It was the best noodles ever when I was I was in Hawaii so I had to stop by the one in San Jose. The noodles didn't quite live up to the memory but was still good, noodles made fresh everyday and cooked right in front of you, with several add on options to make the meal! Marugame always hits the spot. Service is quick and prices are reasonable. I wasn't super hungry, so I got the cold kake udon, which was perfect for a hot Cupertino day. The noodles were a good texture. I also love the tempura flakes and green onions that add some flavor and crunch to the noodles. I love how efficient the service is and how organized the restaurant is. There's water cups and all the items you need to pack your meal to-go. There's lots of parking in the lot. read more
Last year I was in Honolulu Hawaii and my Uber driver recommended Marugame. I did try it in Hawaii and I was very impressed and satisfied. Now speed up a year later I decided to check online if they had one near me. I ended up going and trying it. Sorry to say I did not have the same great experience. I ordered the Beef & Sprout Udon along with Cheese, Shrimp and crab Tempura. As I attempted to look for a seat most of the tables were dirty from use and it was 730 dinner time on a Friday and there was no line and not packed at all. Now after cleaning my own table a sitting for my meal I went straight for tasting my broth and was very disappointed. It was a cold evening and soup was the target. But the broth was luke warm at best. My date also had Luke warm broth. That kind of drew a big disappointment. What do we do? As we tried to eat soup is just not the same if it is not hot so we brought it to the attention of the staff. The lady at the counter tried to convince us they check the temperature of the broth before serving it and it should be hot. After a long stare at each other she says, well what do you want? Now I am feeling like unimportant to them. Right before I was about to speak the woman running the counter says do you want new broth? I say of course, but HOT broth please! They gave us both Hot broth and this time you can see the steam coming off of it and we went to sit back down to enjoy our meal. The tempura was delicious. After my first encounter with this restaurant, I will not be returning. First impression is everything and sorry but they were not sorry. read more

I never really liked marugame until I tried their Beef Tomatama Rice Bowl ($15.99). I'm really glad they came out with the tomatama "line" because this was delicious. I think the tomato sauce adds a lot more dimension than just a regular beef bowl which is why I quite enjoyed it. They give a decent portion of beef and I was definitely full after eating this. As always, marugame is affordable and super quick which makes it a perfect option for when you are on a budget and time crunch! read more
