I really enjoyed the sushi here (with one exception - we apparently ordered something w/ mint leaves rolled in and it was AWFUL...but once we removed the mint leaves, it was better). After reading the great reviews of a budget sushi place, I was excited to try it. I get there, and after a short wait we were seated. I ordered the edamame and it came out cold and unsalted. When I asked the waitress to make it warm, she gave me a blank stare and said it was served cold. I didn't want to make a scene so I let it go. I ordered a spicy tuna (as did my date) and a salmon and jalapeño roll (she got a veggie roll too). The tunas and veggie roll were on point, but they royally messed up my salmon roll. It comes out and it was just plain tuna, not even salmon!, and no jalapeño. I tell the waitress and she comes back with the same roll with a spoon full of diced jalapeno on top on one of the pieces. I honestly was in a state of shock, but reminded myself my stomach wouldn't know the difference and it wasn't worth the effort to make a scene. Oh, and there was also a shortage of wasabi. Had the spicy tuna tartar which was really good. Had the spider roll which was just so-so. My friend and I were hungry and didn't even finish it. Had the hotate uni uramaki and was totally thrown off. It was the fishiest slimiest thing I've ever had but it could be because I just don't really love urchin. Not sure. The veggie tempura was okay but didn't like the fact that it had green bell-pepper in there and it shouldn't be part of the tempura bowl. It was also annoying that they allowed so many people to stand clustered by the door (very near about 5 tables near the door, hovering over). My friends and I were in the village looking for a place to eat and stumbled upon this quaint sushi house. We were greeted by the most hospitable hostess I've ever met. We sat in the outdoor seating area and started to order the traditional platters. Much to our surprise: everything was absolutely wonderful and bite size. My husband, friends and I have traveled to Japan and must confess: this is as authentic as you can get. From the way they serve their beer, sake, to the servers, the ambiance, the price:this place was perfect and earned my 5 stars! The uni was delectable and the squid was out of this world. It was so fresh (no fishy smell) and the texture just melted in my mouth. (mind you, I am pregnant! My nose picks up every fishy smell known to man!!!) This place definitely is a rare find! The decor is very nice: good art work, very nice room in the back with bamboo, and even the bathroom is decked out. Although because its a tight place, it got a bit routy at times, especially when people walked in to wait for a table. We went there for dinner tonight and was excited that it got 4 stars from Yelp. Loved the decor...clean lines and loved the natural food. The sushi was fresh but wasn't exactly mind blowing. I ordered a yellow tail handroll, rock shrimp tempura, vegetable tempura appetizers and eel inside out roll. I liked the handroll the best, and I had some of my bf's sashimi combo dinner. Ordered the Chef's Choice sushi and it had all of the regular staples like tuna, salmon, yellowtail, etc. These were all fresh and good. I especially enjoyed the more exotic cuts like fluke, mackerel, anago (saltwater eel) and toro. Living in Seattle I have a West Coast bias on sushi. Hmm, Once again, we find a restaurant that does not stand up to its reviews on Yelp. We had dinner here, and since it was rated high on Yelp, didnt mind waiting a bit to get a seat. The place is cozy but small and the staff were a little over worked as it took a while to get our drink and sushi orders. All in all, we cant say that it was the best sushi we had or anything like that. The price is decent, and we didnt find much of to talk about. I think we could have had better sushi for the same price somewhere else. All in all, would not recommend this place to our friends. Came here around 6pm on a Wednesday so it wasn't overly crowded and we had our choice of seating. We chose the back area which is kind of an enclosed outside area if that makes sense. Nice and quaint and private as we were the only ones there for most of our meal. Food consumed was miso soup (very tasty), spicy tuna tartar (not the best I've ever had but it was good and I would order it again), Rolls including eel, spicy tuna, and spicy yellowtail. The spicy yellow tail roll was to die for super delish! Finished the meal with the green tea ice cream to cleanse my pallet. I've been going to this sushi joint since it opened in the 90's. Amazingly that it's still here. If you want a place for some decent Japanese food if you happened to be caught on LaGuardia, I recommend Marumi. While the sushi is nothing special, I like the starters the best.
