Came here for a nice snack before lunch and boy, that was a very good decision. The place was a nice and cozy spot, and for the food these donuts were the best donuts I have ever eaten. The server was incredibly nice and even gave us free donut holes! The donut cinnamon rolls were so incredibly large, It was even bigger than my head. I work right around the corner and have always wanted to stop by... but they close at 1pm, sometimes even sooner if they sell out. I managed to stop in around 11:50 on a Thursday a couple weeks ago and they didn't have much left... I grabbed a huge apple fritter that must have weighed at least a pound for $3. The only other thing they had out was donut holes and I didn't bother trying them. The apple fritter wasn't bad, but also wasn't great. It's very dense, and you'll definitely feel heavy after eating even half of it. I was determined to try it again, so I attempted at 11:30 on a Tuesday before work. And again... not much. They had peanut butter cookies that looked burnt all wrapped up by the counter, a couple basic donuts, and two cinnamon rolls left that looked a little stale to me. I hate walking into a place and not buying anything, but I passed on a purchase. The last time I tried was today. I came in around 11:10 and still... not much. Just more apple fritters and burnt cookies at the register. The guy working was already sweeping and getting ready to close. I understand that I'm not there as soon as they open, but packing up 2 hours before you close? Hmmm... I really wanted to like this place but I just can't seem to try anything. Bummer. read more

Loved the muffins! Fresh, even warm. We passed on the donuts with Froot Loops in the frosting, but they were an indication that Marvelous Muffins caters to all ages and palettes. They also have breakfast sandwiches... It seems to be family owned???, which is nice if that is the case. The shop is smaller than we expected from the exterior. It shares the building and has to have kitchen space of course, so the area devoted to customers is barely a hallway. There are some stools available if you choose to linger, but it seems best to take your muffin and run. Given the shop's name, the muffin assortment was not all that extensive or creative, but every muffin we tried, we loved. Come to think of it, I'm fine with them focusing on the classics and baking them well. We'll be back. read more

I don't understand all the Yelp-laints from the other reviewers. Marvelous Muffins has been around these parts for going on 30 years now. They must be doing SOMETHING right! I came in at lunchtime today on my way to Shelter Island. It's been a while since my last visit but I wanted a muffin! The cases were still full of selections although there was only 1 raisin bran muffin left-which I snagged immediately! It was extraordinarily tasty-moist and flavorful. I remember trying the Banana Nut muffin last time & that- too was memorable. It is a little bit off-putting to come in and see someone sitting on the side there and I was unsure whether he was an employee or not? But the gentleman was very friendly and we talked about their menu: the sandwiches-which are popular and the fruit smoothies made with fresh fruit. Their coffee is supposed to be pretty awesome-it's Cuban coffee! I know a lot of fisherman from the nearby fishing docks eat here. Of course-the ever present tourists flock here as well. If a place has a dynamite muffin and some volcanic coffee-that's good enough to float my boat! For what it's worth-these muffins ARE marvelous! read more

I actually go here for the breakfast sandwiches. I prefer the croissant with eggs, sausage and cheese. The croissant is so light and crisp. You get the full flavors of the sausage, egg and cheese with the croissant. Like any bakery, is all about timing on whether the baked goods are on point. The fresher the better for pastries and baked goods. Most of the time the pastries and baked goods is on point. Once in a while I will run into a dry muffin. They have your typical donuts, rolls, muffins, etc. The triple berry muffin is really good here especially if its fresh. This is a small place and has some seating inside. They have a few designated parking in the lot just for this place. They open early and usually close late noon time. This is a small family business. The lady running the place is a nice and sweet elder lady. Some may find it a bit more expensive than your "big company" coffee shops. A whole bunch of big company coffee shops popping up around here. I try to support local family run business types when I get the chance. read more

I have made this my early morning stop for grub each time I go to San Diego and stay at Humphrey's. It is a sweet reward to crush my diet after running a race out there. I have not had the experiences others have had with a poor selection and muffins not being very tasty. I have had the opposite, including going there around 11 AM and still having the display trays full of baked deliciousness. There is not a ton of seating inside, but talking a walk around the bay eating your new best friend will leave you wanting to go back and find a replacement friend. The staff is always friendly and helpful, even telling us what has recently come out of the oven and is still bubbling with sugar coated goodness. Anyway, if you are in the area and need some muffins, bear claws, fritters and the like, you can't go wrong here. read more
