10/10 recommend! Where do I start!!? The customer service and timeliness was amazing. The restaurant was very clean and had a comfy mom and pop shop feel to it. The donuts are the best donuts I've ever eaten. We tried the chocolate fudge muffin, chocolate sprinkle, strawberry sprinkle, glazed and cinnamon roll donut. All were divine but something about the cinnamon roll donut was special. The breakfast croissant was amazing and the ham and turkey sandwiches were loaded and packed to go so well (these sandwiches included lettuce, tomato, pickles, cucumbers, bell pepper and onion). We went two days in a Row because we loved everything so much and our kids wanted their donuts for breakfast again. The owner gave me a few complimentary donut holes and met my kids and was so kind and personal which is something you truly don't see these days. We visit San Diego every summer and Marvelous Muffins will be one of our mandatory breakfast spots and new tradition. read more

I always support local businesses. The owners are nice and helpful. Most of their product is "from a box" (done from a wholesaler) like the bagels, croissants and such. I am not aure about their muffins but they have that bland "mass produced" flavor. Somewhat dry and chewy with an overal blandness. Not what I would call "marvelous" unless a muffin from Ralph's is considered marvelous. read more

The muffins served here are pretty darn good...would I say they are marvelous??? No. But hey, businesses need to come up with clever names, right? Anyway, these muffins here are pretty darn good. I tried the cranberry walnut and mixed berry muffins on my visit. The best part about these muffins were definitely the berries. Slightly sweet and slightly tart; exactly like a handful of fresh picked berries should taste. The muffin batter isn't overly sweet either, which is nice. I like me some muffins (and spooning) for breakfast, especially when they are affordable and there is a decent variety to pick from. You can pick up half a dozen muffins without breaking the bank, they taste yummy and are moist. The flavored coffees here are pretty good and so is the service. I have to agree with Melissa T. that I was drawn to the store by its name. It should just be called Muffin though. By the time we arrive there were hardly any flavors left so I got a cranberry walnut muffin (read, not morning people). I was picking at the top and I noticed a dead gnat. You're a little fly buzzing around and then you see a piping hot muffin so you try to get a little closer and then you drown in the sweetness. I totally get this. I went up to exchange it and the cashier was deeply embarrassed and did not hesitate to give me a new one. However, the baker (who I assume is the owner) kept telling me it wasn't a fly, that it was just a nut shell. I don't know if she was too embarrassed to face the truth but it really annoyed me. I bake a lot and even I didn't, I think most people know that when they see two little wings that it's a not a nut. I didn't even touch my second muffin and we just left. This place is close to my work so I like to stop in on Friday morning and grab some donuts and muffins for my coworkers. The donuts are good, not great, they have a great taste and fluffy yet slightly crunchy on the outside texture, they just don't ever have enough glaze or topping for my liking, and they are not cheap, I don't remember exactly how much a regular donut is, but in pretty sure it is ~$1,50 ea and I'm used to paying for $1 ea at the place near my house. Also, I've tried a couple of their muffins and for a place called Marvelous Muffins, I have to say they are pretty underwhelming, sort of dry and not a whole lot of flavor. read more

Stopped in for breakfast as it was very near our hotel on our way out of town. It is a small place but it has the "mom and pop" feeling where everything is made with love. Okay, at first I wanted 1 of everything in the case but I did settle on a lemon cheesecake muffin. Wow!! This muffin was so moist and the lemon wasn't over powering nor was the cheesecake filling too much. It really was a perfect little bite of lemon cheesecake heaven. The muffins were just short of marvelous - but the variety of baked goods was fabulous! I'm so tired of going to a bakery known for their muffins to end up having to decide between two kinds (typically blueberry and some kind of cranberry orange or banana nut). Marvelous Muffins had dozens of options! I tried the honey walnut bran muffin and it was decent. It was still warm (plus!) and the size was sufficient (nom nom). It wasn't the best, most marvelous muffin I have ever tried but it served as a good enough breakfast for a rushed Wednesday morning. I can't believe it took me so long to eat here! I have been going here since last year as I work in the adjacent center. I have not had donuts but have had a bagel breakfast sandwich (which was delicious because there was lots of cheese) several kinds of muffins. I'm a creature of habit and get a 1/2 caff coffee and a cranberry or blueberry bran muffin. Sophie is always friendly and when she sees me walk in, she pours me a cup of coffee because I'm a regular now. I CRAVE the bran muffins which are chewy and not too sweet and have a large muffin top! I never really know what to start a yelp review with - writing a "popular" yelp review is about as easy as coming up with a pick-up line that isn't cheesy; there's almost literally no way to do it. So, I'm just going to start my review... It was a long time since we had been to San Diego, almost too long, especially since we live in Arizona. On our drive to our hotel, Humphrey's Half Moon Inn, we spotted a cute little muffin shop called Marvelous Muffins. Right then and there, we decided we would visit this cute little shop first thing in the morning. Upon seeing the menu the next day, everyone decided to order something that was, of course, a pastry of some sort. But, since I favor savory over sweet (and I happen to be quite the carnivorous type) I went with the turkey sandwich. Why? Because it's hard to botch a turkey sandwich! Of course, I would try at least a bite of another pastry/muffin, because it's called Marvelous Muffins, and since they named their shop after what they probably pride themselves on, the muffins have to be good. But, after this visit, I think they should call themselves Spectacular Sandwiches, and when I say spectacular, I wouldn't use it loosely. To be honest, I didn't know quite what to expect, so when I first bit into it, I was in sandwich heaven, and, believe me, I've eaten lots of good sandwiches in my day. It was truly to die for. "Guys, you've really got to try this sandwich!" I said to my friends back at the hotel, right after I bit into the delectable piece of heaven. Once everyone tried it, they absolutely adored it. Since then, every morning for the rest of our vacation, we always got sandwiches (and a few pastries, because man were they good!) from Marvelous Muffins. When we got back home, we tried recreating the sandwich. It turned out well, but it never lived up to a Marvelous Muffin sandwich. Almost every time we eat a sandwich, we all agree that it could never live up to the sandwich gods. So, to close, I must include that, to this day, I would visit San Diego JUST to get one bite of a Marvelous Muffins sandwich. read more

Walking around "downtown" Point Loma, we decided to pop in here for a light breakfast. I know the name of the place is "Marvelous Muffins", but we didn't want a sweet muffin. They have ham/cheese croissants, so we ordered one and also got a bacon/egg/cheese bagel. For the price that was charged - $5.75 for the bagel - you would have thought it would come with a bit of decent cheese. WRONG. The slices of bland American cheese didn't really set off the microwaved egg well. The bacon was also apparently microwaved also, too crisp, almost burned. The bagel sandwich wasn't too bad, but it sure wasn't worth $5.75, even in pricey Shelter Island. The ham/cheese croissant also had ONE slice of that American cheese too. But have you ever microwaved a croissant? Well, let me tell you - DON'T. The flaky pastry turns into a sticky dough-like consistency. The pre-sliced ham and one slice of American cheese turns into a glob when microwaved - but it's hotter than the surface of the sun. We frankly couldn't eat it. Couple the food disasters with the fact that when we arrived (10:30 am), the tables/counter were DIRTY and looked like they weren't cleaned off all day, the floors were DIRTY, and the half and half for the coffee was room temperature (I'm sure that's great for a science experiment, not so good for putting in coffee). Needless to say, we're not going back (we live in the area). To be honest, we didn't try the muffins, but I get the feeling they're NOT baked in house. I'm not sure I would want them if they were baked there (based on the fly comment in an earlier review). Sorry, Marvelous Muffins. Mediocre Muffins would be a more appropriate name. read more

Upon first bite into my cinnamon apple cake muffin I couldn't believe my taste buds. Great coffee, an aaaaaamazing muffin with real apples. I suggested to the staff that they change their name to "Best GD muffin you'll ever EMEFFIN' have in you friggin' life," but they simply frowned. After a fantastic trip to San Diego for the weekend, this place almost provoked a fight between my wife & I. She continues to blatantly disregard Rule #1 for ordering food. For those of you not aware of this important statute, it reads, "If the name of an establishment contains a type of food, then you must order that type of food." Being a good citizen, I followed the guidelines and ordered the blueberry muffin, while my wife tried to make an end run around the law and get a donut. Luckily, I was able to make her see the error of her ways (I've found badgering is an effective strategy), and she got the banana walnut muffin & a vanilla chai latte. Apparently, the guy behind the counter did not find my control issues quite so amusing, and he made sure to heat up my wife's muffin to the optimal temperature for a banana walnut muffin (I think he even used a muffin thermometer), while handing me a cold, bland-tasting blueberry muffin. It was just awful. My wife enjoyed her muffin and laughed in my face...but at least she followed Rule #1. read more

We ordered two muffins (blueberry and apple cinnamon spice) and two breakfast croissants with egg, ham and cheese plus coffee. The food was OK. The croissants had too much cheese that made them very rich. Coffee was strong (no complaints here). The muffins were better then Starbucks. They had good choice of flavors. If you want a quick snack or fresh baked muffins/buns - it will do. I would not go out of my way to go there, but if in the area - will come back for muffins. The place is little hard to find for the first time, because it is kind of in the back of the building. Very simple inside, more like a bakery shop, no ambiance. Ate breakfast here 2 mornings on a recent trip - it was walkable from our hotel on Shelter Island - quick and inexpensive. Service was good. Muffins - eh, just average. For a place that's all about muffins, I was decidedly underwhelmed. Got the chocolate fudge the first day, and it was really dry. Got the lemon poppyseed the second time, and it was much better, though still not spectacular or anything. My daughter got an apple bear claw and a doughnut with sprinkles and didn't finish either one. My husband got maybe orange-cran one day and I can't remember the other - neither one was overly impressive to him either. Not even sure why we went there a second time, but it wasn't BAD and it was late enough that we just wanted something light and cheap and fast - so we gave them a second try. No real complaints - wouldn't make an effort to go back, but wouldn't fight it if it was the easiest option either. read more

Ok you caught me! I love muffin tops! This is the place that has nice big muffin tops;-) My fishing buddy and I decided to check this place out, nearly 6 am on our way to the Shelter Island fishing pier. The lady at the counter (possibly the owner) was very nice and friendly. I passed by this place many times and always say that someday I'll stop by to try it. I'm glad I finally did. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant breakfast sandwich and a blueberry muffin with some Hawaiian Hazelnut coffee. I didn't realize the how big the croissant sandwich was. It kept my hunger pangs at a low and lasted most of the morning to where I couldn't eat my muffin until later that afternoon. It was very fulfilling to say the least. There were also donuts. My weakness is the apple fritter, but no donuts for me thank you. Too much sugar! I will definitely go back and try the other muffins (tops...lol). read more

I have been grabbing breakfast here on vacation week ever since I was a little kid. And I now come here with my boyfriend and we enjoy a light breakfast on vacations, and this place is still the place we go every day. I love the area and after coming in two days in a row as soon as the owver and (her son?) saw me pulling in the parking lot, my order was already being prepared! The chocolate chip bear claw and muffin are AMAZING and the coffee is delicious as well. (1 visit) Well, it's better than Starbucks - the coffee the food. It's less-expensive too. We had egg & cheese croissants with ham. The croissants were nice and fresh, the ham was decent, the eggs were freshly prepared but a little bit over-salted for my taste (especially paired with the ham), and the cheese was ... ummm ... yellow. The cheese is definitely the weak link here. But hey, for under six bucks it's decent overall. The muffins were very good, especially for the price. The blueberry wasn't overly oily and rich - I appeciate that - but it was a little bit too "cakey-sweet" for my taste. It had nice fresh blueberries and a generous "top." The apple muffin was't so cakey, but was a bit richer (there seemed to be more butter going on). Pretty decent overall, but I'm not so sure as I'd go so far as to call them "marvelous." We needed a quick breakfast after we left our hotel and headed to the Wild Safari Animal Park. My husband saw this place and knows how much I love muffins so I eagerly agreed. The joint was small, with only a few seats, the staff was pleasant and helpful. I got the mixed berry and my husband got the blueberry. The muffins were big but didn't look like the type of muffin you'd look at and say "Wow that looks yummy". It was still early. I expected the muffins to be warm, but they weren't...if you wanted it warm, there was a self serve microwave to do the trick. After my first bite I knew it needed a dose of nuke and butter. It had lots of berries but it was kind of dry and bland. My husband agreed. I was still hungry so I got an everything bagel with cream cheese and a vanilla coffee to go...ok coffee and not the best bagel I ever had but it was better than the muffin, and they packed on the cream cheese which was nice. After all these years on the west coast, I think I still expect to get the delicious east coast bakery goods I grew up on. read more

I've been banking at the Wells Fargo directly across from this little place for four months since moving to SD. Never paid attention, didn't even notice it. Today, after a stop at the bank, I searched Yelp for the nearest breakfast places. Marvelous Muffins was conveniently located about 100' to my left...lol. I had a yummy little bagel that was fresh and had a decent chew. They were out of everything bagels so I had a plain one. I don't know for sure if they were holding out on me...haha...(re: read a bad review) The egg on the sandwich was whipped up and cooked on the spot...bonus. I asked for an Americano which they have listed as Cafe American. She gave me a cup with the espresso and a separate cup of hot water so I could make it less American if I wanted? Either way, I've never thought about it that way and it's never been offered to me that way; I enjoyed the option. I also had a blueberry bear claw and it was yummy as well. Overall...Yummy They have parking spots...bonus. They have a small seating area but I recommend taking your breakfast down to one of the little parks in the area (I took mine to the Spanish Landing Park) and enjoy the views of the water on a nice morning while you devour everything in the little white bag. What is the attraction to this place? Stopped in a few times on different mornings hoping to catch a glimpse of what I've seen on here as far as rave reviews and photos but so far it has NOT been marvelous. In fact, mediocre is probably the better word. We've sampled several muffins and there's absolutely nothing distinct or remarkable about them. You'll find the same, if not larger, products at other area bakeries or even coffee shops. Also, what is with the fee for paying with a card? It's 2014! and even if you want to hit people with the fee, why would you ask me if I'm ok with the fee? I can read the sign, and I gave you the card. What if I had said I was not ok with the fee? Would you snatch my muffins and revoke my purchase? We'll probably give it one more spin, but so far, there is much better in this area. read more

We stopped by this muffin shop for a quick breakfast right before driving back to the Bay Area. They were very fresh and warm, but they lacked sweetness. The triple berry flavor was good, but after a few bites, I got tired of eating. Even with milk, it was tough to finish because it was so bland. I would recommend this shop if you're around Shelter Island, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

I'm on vacation and am staying at Humphrey's, and I was so happy that I was able to walk down to this little place. The name was what caught my eye, and I had to stop in! Cream Cheese Pocket? Oh my gosh, it was delicious. Perfect balance of creaminess with just the right amount of sweetness. It was cooked to perfection and was flakey and delicious. Why didn't I get two?! I also picked up some apple juice and my total only came to $4! Woohoo! Very pleased with this place!! Only reason that I am reserving the 5 star was that it didn't seem to have AC when I went in (or maybe it just wasn't as cold was I would have wanted). But, the food was AWESOME!! read more

It's teeny tiny with very limited seating inside, so we ordered to go. I got a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a sesame bagel and my husband had a lemon cheesecake muffin. Both were delicious. Love this place! The muffins are delicious and so are the pastries. A lot of regulars go here including me. She starts making my drink as soon as I walk in the door...I always wanted to be treated like Norm on Cheers. The prices are high but so is the quality. I focus on the bear claws and the apple cinnamon roll, which is the size of a dinner plate. The coffee is always hot and brewed to perfection. I don't go here as much anymore because it was starting to show on my hips. But it's a perfect place to take someone visiting San Diego if you are in the Shelter Island area or if you live in the area as a special treat. read more
