The three Servers we interacted with get 1 solid Star, poor attitudes all around. The hostess was very pleasant, bumps the overall to 2 stars. The food gets 4 stars, but if we just wanted good food, we'd cook at home or order delivery. The roasted veggies were good as was the salmon. It's funny that I opened this app to rate this place and it was rated exactly what I would give it... a 3.5 at best! A friend recommended it and said we have to go to this place. Honestly it started out great w the burrata and the hamachi crudo... but all downhill from there. The steak Frites was the most expensive dish on the menu but the meat was gamey and very mehhh... Marvin was such a great surprise! I love hole in the wall places that don't have ridiculously flashy advertising and parking was very easy (plenty of street parking). The bar can get a little crowded but theres plenty of table seating as well. We started with the Salami toast and octopus apps, which were both stellar in flavor and cooked perfectly, then ordered the Veal and Chicken Rapini. At first I was skeptical about the Rapini because there were no photos on yelp so I thought it may be a new item. When asked, they said it had been an item on the menu for a while so I decided to give it a go. It was delicious! Its like eating chicken soup in a pasta dish. We finished with a refreshing key lime pie slice that was perfectly tart and sweet. I would say its perfect for friend gatherings and date nights, will definitely be back! read more

The only thing that kills this place is the service. Our server was a dude with a clumsy beard with pens hanging from his ears. His attitude was so miserable, he looked as if he was not happy to be there. We were 4 people, the bill was around $270, plus an automatic 20% service charge. It feels very good giving a good tip when is well deserved and earned but this mandatory service charge only makes servers entitled, like this dude. Management needs to pay more attention. Amazing. Every time! My favorite place in LA to go to. Unlike other hyped up places (Horses, Mother Wolf etc) that are good but honestly not great and certainly not worth the hassle of trying to get into. Marvin always- ALWAYS- delivers and is a weekly must when I'm here. All of toasts, Cesar, Chicken Parm , steak and the burger are my go to dishes. Great orange wine as well. Okay y'all: Visited for a birthday dinner a few months ago. Food: To the person below who thought everything had too much cheese on/in it, I'll take your extra cheese. Everything is delicious with more cheese. The zucchini blossom dish is amazing, we got an extra. Spicy vodka rigatoni is spicy as hell so be sure you like spice before you get it. Dessert options are limited, and we tried 2, didn't care for either (strawberries/creams and chocolate mouse). Ambiance: Definitely more of a bar scene than restaurant, so be aware. Food was great. Though, our server, Gabriel, kept on playing on his phone during the shift (and this was during peak hour), so it was very hard to get his attention. Four out of five stars average rating for this establishment is absolutely psychotic. And it shows that in general Los Angeles has no taste but that furthermore Hollywood and central Los Angeles where real estate is jacked up people don't care at all. A dead giveaway would be the ceiling made out of large tin cans used. Sorry Jill if you're reading this NOT SORRY I've seen the garbage food you and your employees promote via Domaine LA and it is disgusting that you have no taste in food as a wine purveyor (also not going to leave a bad review for you because luckily you're not selling much food at all at your establishment ) I've never been to a place that hosts an extensive (100 bottles maybe?) wine list of ONLY ORGANIC AND NATURAL (majority biodynamic even) and the food is Denny's quality. If you're into drinking rare immediate release wines for premium prices this is definitely your spot and there is a decent selection. Beyond this if you're looking to actually eat good food run the other direction and don't look back. Will simply go down the list for the rest of this review and name each dish and exactly what was the problem: Caesar salad - there are better bagged Caesar salad kits at the local grocery. Nothing about this Caesar salad was interesting or different from the bagged ones I used to eat 25 years ago. Nothing. Did you say $18? Tomato Burrata Salad - I'm pretty sure the bill says that I paid $22 for this hunk of mozzarella cheese from the Ralph's and two whole heirloom tomatoes rashly sliced into quarters and thrown on the plate. The tomatoes weren't even ripe, but maybe that was intentional or perhaps some communication about what seasonal means? Roasted chicken - not much to speak of here but as the most expensive food order we made on the menu that is a serious problem. I can say whatever directions were on the box they at least MUST have followed them properly so kudos for that. I'm fairly certain the mashed potato side was rehydrated potato flakes. Cacio e Pepe - it is now quite common in the restaurant world to be seeing fresh handmade pasta being sold at hi brow places like this for similar prices but I am fairly insulted by the fact that the pasta that I just ate for this cacio e Pepe was pulled out of the box 10 minutes before I ate it and the toppings that form the rest of the Cacio e Pepe who even cares there was nothing happening here at all. Honestly why even call this Barilla spaghetti with Parmesan shreds (yes the one you buy preshredded in the little plastic pint container) and black pepper cacio e Pepe? Completely uncalled for. That was a slap in the face to all cacio e Pepe I have ever had in a very disrespectful way. $28. I mean I just have to keep mentioning the prices so that I can forever be reminded of the beating that I took here. I am sorry to everyone out there that Marvin won the fight this evening taking almost $200 of my money. This is a very disappointing defeat but I should've known better when I saw the belligerent frat boy falling out of his chair as I was sitting down for dinner and the woman who ran out on her date just moments before as well. Marvin, come on, this is a serious disappointment and I can't even believe that you guys get mentioned in a majority of wine bar conversations that come up around me. I will forever be interjecting my opinion when I hear you mentioned and not in a good way. This place is absolutely pathetic and I will never come back here and I will always have a bitter taste in my mouth when I hear the word Marvin. I hope you go out of business so that the word Marvin can be reclaimed again to its potential greatness. Despicable. I'm not even going to mention that the wine was fantastic. Who cares?! First time at Marvin last night. The "Porterhouse for 2" is much more like a "Porterhouse for 1.25" - one of you will still be hungry. Certainly not worth the $88 price tag. The two sides you get with the meal are fairly small, as well. The real kicker is that the service is awful. I chose to ignore previous reviews on that front and I regret it. It was almost impossible to get a waiter's attention. Once I realized how small the steak was I tried to put in an order for another entree, but no waiter so much as made eye contact from across the room for at least an hour. At that point I just wanted to get the check and get out. The final straw was the unmentioned 20% service charge on a two-top. Luckily I read the review here first and didn't tip extra, but it felt like such a money grab on their end. I guess that's how they get away with not checking in once throughout your meal. Two words: salt, grease. These were the main ingredients on our pastas. Service was just barely okay, while the food was so bad we had to send it back. Why come to a relatively expensive pasta restaurant when you could cook it so much better at home. Even a frozen microwave pasta would have been better, honestly. I would say this place is good but more about the scene. There are places similar to its ambiance with a more superior menu. Prices could be a bit cheaper especially considering the portions are smaller and more tapas-like style. Staff is helpful. Street parking available. We got both the arugula and chopped salad. The chopped salad was my favorite item after the toast with cheese on it. The spicy vodka pasta was good as well. The third star was their truffle fries. I've been looking forward to going to Marvin because the food pictures online always look so good and the ambiance looked fun. Don't be deceived. It was one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. I go to restaurants all the time and never review (I should though) but the flavoring in everything was super bland so I had to share. I'll start with what wasn't too bad, the Cesar salad and fried artichokes. They were fine the Cesar was a bit too heavily dressed though but otherwise fine. The artichokes weren't really very flavorful but were ok. My friend and I ordered steak which maybe was the fail on us but I've seen pics that look good and our waiter said it was a favorite and he talked it up so much. We ordered different temperatures and when the steaks came out they were both medium so one had to go back to be fixed. There wasn't really an apology for waiting or overcooking. In fact when I showed him and said this isn't MR he then asked if i wanted it fixed. He should have offered first. So I waited which is fine. When it came back it had a lovely charred top so I figured this looks good and inside was on the lowest side of MR. Took some bites and it was literally flavorless. Basically tasted like a diner steak and eggs breakfast quality steak. The fries that came with it were so crisp they were hard and really over salted but still better than the steak. The side of vegetables were pretty soggy and again flavorless. Both wines I tried were pretty ok but neither would I drink ever again. The tables are SO CRAMPED next to each other. We luckily got one away from the main area by the window. But the tables basically made it look like communal dining. There were inches between different groups. I had a very interesting conversation at Marvin about the decline of engaged service and increase of apathy in the restaurant industry - specifically about servers, bartenders and hosts. What triggered such a conversation? The apathy of the people that work at Marvin. I get this place is very popular, but the steep price and quality of the food just doesn't justify such disengaged, I would rather be on my phone service. Really terrible service. I walked in and had the most awkward moment because I wasn't sure if the host was a patron or working there - he was totally unwelcoming. When we asked about a table he rudely pointed and said "you can sit there" and walked away- didn't offer us menus, or anything. It set a terrible tone. I really enjoyed the food and the wine list and Marvin last week, but did feel the service was lacking a bit. Below is what we got: Ratatouille & Goat Cheese Toast - 4 1/2 Stars. My favorite item from this night. Bread was toasted perfectly with a thin layer of gait cheese, topped with ratatouille. Bonus, this was also on the happy hour menu. Fried Artichoke - 3 1/2 Stars. Good, not great. The aioli dipping sauce is was ok, a little too lemony. Chicken Liver Toast - 4 Stars. Pretty tasty, smothered with a fruit (perhaps cherry) and served with toasted baguette. Creamy and very tasty. The Chicken (Main) - 3 1/2 Stars. This was cooked very well, but not a very exciting dish at all. The service: Our first waitress was awesome, knowledgeable and very friendly. Then somehow we got a new waitress (petite blonde waitress) who seemed annoyed at us, was a little short, and not that pleasant at all. New owners? This used to be my favorite restaurant in West Hollywood. I'd always look forward to going and never ever had a bad experience. The host felt gave more of a security guard vibe than friendly welcome. The servers are all new and very unhelpful and rude. Had to send the food back as it was way to salty. When the new dish came out the waiter just dumped it down and walked off. The pasta was nothing like it used to be. I can't believe I've been driving past this little spot almost everyday without noticing it! My friend raves about this place so we had a girls date here tonight. Between the 2 of us, we shared: -tricolore salad: a heap of massaged bitter greens in a zesty dressing. -fried artichoke: 4 pcs of perfectly fried artichoke hearts, served on a bed of fennel. Love the combo of hot and cold, and textures. A fun take on a salad. -branzino: the fish was fresh, with perfectly charred skin, served with 2 pcs. Of asparagus, small pile of potato purée, and 1/2 of a Meyer lemon. So good! Get this, you won't be disappointed. I had a glass of their orange wine option available in a glass to wash everything down. I couldn't take any good photos because the restaurant is very dimly lit with a candle that actually kept going out during our dinner. The food was pretty good overall, just a little salty for my taste. The prices are a bit high, but I may come back again. I highly recommend the steak frites and fried artichoke . The steak was cooked perfectly and the fried artichoke had a delicious yogurt and dill sauce sprinkled with chives for dipping as well as a fennel arugula salad . Those were my two favorite dishes. I thought the Caesar salad was nothing spectacular and overpriced at $18. The burrata toast was yummy but a bit salty. It comes in 3 pieces and the burrata melts in your mouth.
