I ordered a pretzel which if they had some beer cheese would have been the best pretzel I ever had but it is the second best pretzel I ever had. I am slowly working my way through all of Cleveland's breweries and this was a solid choice. The venue is huge and brand new with great indoor and outdoor seating. There is pizza if you are hungry that was quite good and the beer were well crafted. The beer list was IPA heavy but they did have a few other styles as well some guest brews. read more

As a Clevelander who moved South about 5 years ago, I was very excited to stumble upon this brewery last Saturday before we went to a concert at First Energy Stadium. The beers here were tasty, and my non-beer drinking brother was happy that there was liquor available as well. The brick-oven pizzas were awesome (the steak fajita was A++) and the giant everything oven baked pretzel was A++++++. This is definitely a much needed establishment in Downtown Cleveland. Masthead is a local brewery and tap room located in a renovated historic building built in 1921 that used to be an automotive dealership. They have public house style seating or bar seating inside. The have glass garage door bays that offer tons of natural light and open during the warmer months to extend the indoor seating outside making it pet friendly. I love the industrial details and being able to see the brick oven in action from your seat. Their menu specializes in wood fired, hand crafted pizzas, sandwiches, salads and even roasted veggies. Because balance. They also utilize local produce on several of their menu items. GF and Vegetarian options are labeled on the menu and VG available upon request. The pizza's we ordered were delicious (Prosciutto and Pepperoni) and the brew was great too! I would love to see them have a house hard cider but they did feature Cidergeist from Cincy (which I love) as a guest tap. I suggest the the Falling Fruit Ale and the house IPA. People around us ordered the Everything Pretzel and the Brussels Sprouts that looked amazing as well. read more

Masthead is a great downtown brewery to come with a group of friends. They serve great pizza and beer - what more would you need on a Friday night! The industrial atmosphere and communal seating ends up making the place a little loud, but still fun. You order up at the bar, sometimes people get confused by the queing process. I went with a group of coworkers last week, and we got a few pizzas to split. We tried the bianca, pepperoni, proscuitto and the hawaiian. I was loving the bianca - white pizzas are my jam. This one is super garlicky with just enough cheese. I added some red pepper flakes and it was great! The pepperoni was a good go to pepperoni if you like neopolitan style pies. I was surprised by the hawaiian - I don't typically love ham but the rosemary scented ham was great. I would skip the proscuitto personally, the butternut squash on it really threw me off on a hot summer day. I haven't tried any of the salads or sandwiches, but what I saw throughout the brewery looked great. We liked the pale ale a lot, and the IPA was good too. Literally the cornerstones of any Cleveland brewery or restaurant that has opened up in the last 7 years. Oh, and don't forget the big ass garage doors to let *just* enough light in for that perfect Instaturd shot. Cool, but done in Brooklyn many years before. Cleveland has gotten so into the stripped down, minimalist look its absurd. My check today come on a wood plank with a rubberband holding the receipt on. Are we in mf kindergarden? If you want minimalist then minimize the price. 60.00 for 2 people to have lunch was steep. Take some of that money and buy a check holder. The pizza was really good. The beet salad was salty as hell. Whatever the beets are brined/macerated in was saltier than an Antifa group and a skinhead rally. Server girl was cool but literally got up from eating at a table to come give us the menus. The cutlery was literally served in those grey plastic tubs (that anyone who has worked in a restaurant knows from the dish room). And the forks still had crusted food on 'em to boot! Maybe next we will get to see the grease trap. Or the inner workings of the garbage dispolal! YAY! Also, there seemed to be more employees than customers. We don't need to see the bar manager doing his liquor order. The blueberry vodka for the hen parties that come through can be done elsewhere. Since when is all this back of house stuff done in front of paying customers. Oh, yea. The new CLE. Gotcha. Its gotten so relaxed I cant tell who's the employee and who's the paying customer anymore. Cleveland need to reign itself in a wee bit. Sending Gifs and Emojis while waiting for absolution, I say. The beer was all really good. The Tiramisu stout was clean and fresh. Even the fruit beer was tasty. The nitro stout (AKA St. Patricks Day beer) was still on which shows the demographic of the place. IPAs are the norm. Still flogging that horse. Parking was kind of a pain in the ass. Im not a hip urbanite who flocked from my suburb to live Downtown, nor am I a desk jockey working Downtown so walking is not an option. Had to drive half way to Yokohama to find a spot. All-in-all I dig the place. Its huge. Good beer and I will be back. Hopefully It will go full Amish by the time Im back around... read more

Yes... just... yes. I think this is one of Cleveland's best local breweries! I went for my birthday on Saturday and the experience was great! It's a story so buckle down and read ahead... First the review. Pizza is good I like the options, the vegan tofu I could do without the tofu, it was a texture thing for me. but the ramp, pesto, and margarita pizzas were awesome. I liked the Brussels sprouts (w/o bacon) and the pretzel... my god the pretzels... the beer was great! A step above most in town enough to make me take some home. Overall great but the customer service sent me over the edge from 4 to 5 stars. (See below) It starts on Thursday originally I had a party of 10 but was afraid of not being able to get a table due to the tribe game so I called for reservations.they informed me they normally do not for smaller parties, but after I explained I had older parents and in-laws coming they helped me out and thankfully so because the party ended up turning into 25lol! Newer brewery in Cleveland, and definitely one of my favorite spots for both brews and food. One negative here is being downtown, there isn't a parking lot. Many large, biergarten style tables, so there is often room to sit, even when busy. One thing I really like is the organized lines to order both food and beer, so ordering drinks doesn't make you relive your days of waving a card to buy light beer and mixed drinks. The pizza here is awesome. All of these are wood-fired so it may appear a little over-toasted, but thats just part of the style. I've had the BBQ Pork pizza minus the pickles both times I've been here to eat, and I have enjoyed it each time. Pork is tender, tasty BBQ sauce, onions, and my personal favorite, the use of fresh mozzarella. At a brewery, the most important thing is the beer, and I've enjoyed the wide array of options that they've had. Some of the more standards like the Jalapeno IPA, Wit, and Pils are solid, but it's the many small batches that really push this place over the top. Smoked Helles is solid. Wide array of Bourbon Barrel Aged beers last time that I was there were all solid. The best I've had was a small batch of my current favorite style beer New England or Hazy style IPAs, and their take on this style, Citra Vice, was outstanding. A favorite place for my fiance and I to visit. Good pizza and good beer. Here's to hoping they keep up with the small batches. read more

What a solid brewery! I love the interior, has a very industrial feel. Not the widest beer selection but enough variety to give you options. Food is decent. I tried the pizzas which were okay, nothing wow. Truthfully, this place kept calling my name mainly because of the chill atmosphere and cool interior. Masthead Brewing is a fun space downtown that will appeal to all beer lovers. The space is large enough to accommodate large groups due to their beer hall seating. The staff was friendly and very willing to answer any questions we had. The food menu is upscale bar food. The pizza oven they have in the kitchen is a unique feature you don't get in every other craft brewery. The beer list is great. I will warn any IPA lovers (like myself) you will be disappointed if that is what you are looking for. They only had one on tap and that was actually a mango flavored IPA. The other beed we had were great though and I could not recommended this place more. The location is great and when the weather gets nice this places patio seems legit. Also I can imagine a nice summer day with the garage door open being one of the premier spots downtown. read more

Downtown Cleveland looks like a ghost town. Please go support this place. Their pizza is better than the za we had in Little Italy and their Masthead IPA is fantastic. What's also cool is you can buy a 4-pack of beer to go, which was great to have back at the hotel room. read more

My husband and I went for a quick dinner. You are given a paper menu and have to order at the bar. Given a buzzer device that informs you when your items are ready. He had the beer flight and loved each of the beers he tried so I don't think you can go wrong there. We had the pretzel and vegetarian pizza with added truffle oil. Everything was delicious and the pretzel was ginormous! Definitely enough for the two of us. We got there around 5ish and by the time we left it was packed. That definitely pushed us to leave earlier as it made me a little uncomfortable. The place is very big but there was not 6 feet of space between patrons. There was sanitizer at the door and everyone was required to wear a mask at entry and when walking around, so that was nice. read more

The flavors of their nduja sausage pizza swing wildly between bland and salty; the sausage, sliced like pepperoni, was not very good. I ate one small piece, and I never want to see it again in my life, lmao. I was warned many people find the pizza to be hit or miss. Next time, I'll order something else. I was on my sixth day of Jury duty when we, the Jury walked down to masthead for lunch before delivering a verdict. I judged Masthead to be pretty excellent. Now, this is a Brewery, but since we were going back to court on Serious Business we drank no beer. Too bad, too. But I can definitely comment on the food. Weekdays they serve lunch for the downtown crowd, and I had the roast beef sandwich. It came with chips, which were really quite good although they were not house made. The sandwich was excellent, it included melty cheese, roasted peppers and grilled onions. The roast beef had no pink at all, which I prefer, but I understand that probably most people eat their meat more done. It was cut to a perfect thickness, not that tissue paper thin Arby's slice but pretty thin. The beef had real beef flavor and it was perfectly complemented by the peppers, onions and especially the smoky cheese that was put under the broiler just long enough to get deliciously brown and bubbly. At least for lunch today, I thought the service method was odd. We ordered at the bar, and got little beeper/flasher coaster things to signal us when our food was ready and when it was, we walked to the kitchen area to get it. There were no servers, just the bartenders. I think this makes sense for the traffic they get for midweek lunches; servers would be covering a lot of ground for not a lot of orders/tips. The building is very large and very wide open. I actually feel terrible not being able to review a few of the beer options, but this is a lunch-on-a-Tuesday review. All in all I enjoyed the atmosphere and the food very much and I am sure that this place will be much busier once April comes, the sun starts to shine and the Indians take the field - I recommend giving it a try before that, to be sure, but definitely then too. read more

This location is walking distance for my apartment so I enjoy coming here for a beer and some pizza. The place is pretty large and accommodating for almost any group size. You order beer at the bar and get your fresh pour immediately from a nice staff person. You also order your food from the bar and pick it up from the kitchen. Had to share the unbelievably terrible experience I had at Masthead, Sunday 8.22.21. After sitting down and ordering a flight, a beer, and a pizza, we didn't get service once our beers were placed. While eating our pizza, we finished our beer. Im assuming what was a bar back took away the empty glass, with no communication. We then continued to eat our pizza with no drinks. As new customers arrived around us they got service. The drunk men next to us who must have been regulars continued to get checked in on, even after they had cashed out. During this time, we watched what we assumed were the closing servers being chatted in by the manager. (We heard one new server complain about "having to work from 3-9, because customers order food before the kitchen closes and I have to stay until they leave" (Yes, obviously that's how food service works. And it's annoying to listen to someone complain about working 6 hours while some people are employed and others work 12-16 hours a day.) When these new servers were chatted in for their shift, they all walked past our corner of the bar to the far corner of the bar to stand and talk. The manager then took a shot with two of his employees. A girl also sat down near us and ordered a tequila drink and then sat down with the manager for an interview. Very clear how this operation is run. No responsibility or focus on the guest. Just a good time with no expectation. After about 15 mins of no service, our original bartender (who had counted down his tips and chatted with some other servers) finally reapproached and asked if we were ok. We asked to two waters and our check because we were ready to go. He took his time with this simple ask, stopping to talk to his coworkers. We could not wait to leave. The business was not busy enough to warrant this service. We come here enough to know there were at least 6 bartenders on staff and 3 bar backs and the manager. It was 3rd quarter during the Browns game and the outside patio wasn't opened. This came from a lack of leadership and no regard for customer service. I usually will not speak up, but i work in customer service and my partner used to work in bar management. This was completely unacceptable. Needless to say we will not be back. This is my go to pizza place since it's so close to where I live. I come here and order my two favorite drinks, tequila and diet coke. It is an absolute delicious combo. Now all of the pizzas are tasty but I have finally picked my favorite and stuck with it, the bianco pizza. It is perfectly crispy although a little greasy, it's just a white pizza with garlic and cheese. Seriously, don't even bother trying other pizzas this is hands down the best one they have. Love the pizza and atmosphere here. You walk in and it's a huge bar with shared seating at large tables and you order at the bar and get a pager. Once your pizza is done the pager rings and you go grab it from their kitchen. The pizza is very tasty, although the appetizers I tried were average at best. On the upside they do have a great selection of beers and craft beers that they rotate monthly, so if you're a beer lover then this place is for you. Fabulous veggie pizza. Rich flavor from the roasted veggies, high quality cheese, and the right balance between sweet and savory in the sauce. The crust is smoky and crunchy on the surface and chewy at the same time. The beer. That's why five stars. One Trick Pony an outstanding neipa. Tiramisu Underverse is dessert in a glass. These guys know beer and will be highly sought after. Comparable to Trillium, Pinthouse, Treehouse... very nice find on a business trip. I will def be back.
