Love this pizza place! Its just a small family owned pizza place on riverside (across from the cemetery) that serves Italian style, flat crust pizzas with amazingly fresh ingredients. This is not a pizza hut or round table type of place- you're not going to get a pizza loaded with cheese and overflowing with meats and veggies. You're probably not going to leave stuffed beyond belief with heartburn. Instead, you'll be treated to a simple pizza, made with pizza crust that is out of this world and lightly topped with some really tasty flavor combinations (I love the pizza with mushrooms and fontina). Pair it with a glass of wine, and its pretty much the perfect pizza dinner. The prices are a bit high, but you're paying for high quality ingredients. Christina and I went to Masullo at about 8:15 pm on Saturday after a marathon session at IKEA. There was no wait for us, but the 3 groups behind us had to wait for about 20 minutes. Long story short, the pizza was great. If you like wood-fired pizza, you will like Masullo - they do it right. Ambiance is urban industrial bistro. Room capacity is allegedly 30 people, but I think at least 45 can be accommodated comfortably. And there were at least 45 while we were there. We had the Antipasto and a version of the Mustapha which include chorizo, chili oil and arugula. The food was effin bomb. But, the service was almost offensive. Despite a lack of attentiveness, our server made us feel rushed through the meal. She was taken back by our decision not to order beer or wine (Christina is pregnant - wtf). And when expressly asked if she would bring the Antipasto out as an appetizer before the pizza, she said "absolutely." THEN...moments later, she shows up with the pizza in hand and no Antipasto, and more importantly no explanation. When pressed by my facial expression and body language clearly articulating "what the hell lady?", our server responded with "I put the order in at the same time." Whatever. This place Is good but I felt like their cheese just slid off of the pizza which was a bit soggy. The service was pretty fast and friendly.

My man picked this place for his 42nd. My parentals were not impressed by the salad or the sausage pizza or the $1 cup of soda or the $8 smaller cup of zin. My dad made a few jokes about how it wasn't Italian, it was scotch, so where was the haggis? He made the joke 4X. The bill came to $92 for 4 individual pizzas, 3 mixed greens salads (again my dad made his cheap joke about the lack of dressing) a ramekin full of olives, a cup of wine, a cup of soda, an Izze and a beer. Basically, dad took a headshaker of a walk, and we got him to Vic's pronto for detoxification. For all the hate at our table, you'd think I might not have liked it. But I DID. I liked the basic salad with high-end pecorino romano gratings and good balsamic (applied with a light touch) and the two pieces of lightly salted flat bread. I enjoyed the hard green spanish-style olives, but thought the Greeks too mushy and fat, and I adored the teensy green ones with the seed you could swallow by accident. The pizza was good. I ordered the potato and bacon. Mom got the eggplant (looked as bad as an eggplant pizza sounds), my dad got the sausage ("10 dime thin slices of dime sized sausage???!!! I say again, where is the Haggis?") The best one was the cheese one we got for Beanie. MOL got a half-and-half pepperoni and cheese (3 pieces of pepperoni on a half-and-half, you can imagine my dad was calling for more scotch) The biggest disappointment for me was the glass of zin. ~4 oz. of red wine with no body served in a small juice cup. Eight bucks. I shoulda had a beer. Best bets if you want to give this place a try: -Potato and bacon and the cheese/tomato based pizzas. Skip the meat if you are a carnivore as you will be saddened by the lack. More for veggies, if you can believe it. SHARE ONE. 2 people can enjoy a 12 inch pizza, but it's slightly too much for a single person even though they call it "individually sized." -Buy the $18 bottle of tempranillo. Much better deal than buying cup after 4 oz cup of overpriced Boeger zin, that's for sure. -Salad is enough for one, but two frugal minded folk with simple tastes could share that and a ramekin full of olives and have a lovely, light meal. Bonus point: while the busser and server forgot my daughter every time they came by (they neglected to give her a plate, cup, water, or flatware. We had to point out she was there) and seemed kind of nervous around her, the hostess showed up with crayola markers and spiral bound paper. I don't think I've ever been to a place and said out loud, "WOW, I am NOT satisfied." We had the Mustapha and it was lacking in prosciutto, which is funny because that is one of its selling points on the menu. We literally had to break it up so that each piece had one. I got a quarter size on my slice. We ordered the Jaqueline, which comes with potatoes and bacon. The bacon was really good, but there wasn't much flavor to the potatoes. Our last pizza was the 3 meat. I think I liked this one the best. Lastly, service was really really slow. Our antipasto came out after our neighbor's pizza, and we had ordered way before them. There were some pros: The crust is cooked really well and portion sizes were good. There were 5 of us and we were full from 3 pizzas (and the antipasto, which I did like. Surprisingly though, I liked the cucumbers and how they were cooked more than the meat. Hard Salami is my favorite type of deli meat, so was a little sad that I wasn't blown away.) We were super excited to give it a try since they were all the rave and expectation following the Bee article. First I love pizza, my favorite food, my comfort food. With this in mind we decided to try three pies- mushroom/bacon, dry chorizo/arugula/chili sauce, and all meet with tomato sauce. Mushroom bacon was by far the best though I wouldn't necessarily rave about it. It was the best of the three. Not enough chorizo, literally 5 pieces on the entire pie of 8 slices so you actually had an arugula pizza which wasn't enough flavor. When you happened upon a chorizo, it had good flavor. The chili sauce is quite bland for a chili sauce. I tried it with the spinach and cheese which I loved the spinach, it was cooked perfectly, but the soft cheese did not have enough flavor. The 3 meat pizza, was good, just a little wet for my liking, we had no choice but to eat with a fork as it was too soft. What did warrant an a was the crust. Great flavor, perfectly thin throughout and a little thick on the edges. Nice beer selection including to ciders, apple and pear. Outside was quieter and more comfortable. Parking is a bit of a mess, but lots of people seem to like it, appears to be a neighborhood favorite judging by all the take out pies. Worth a try. I think the only possible way for someone like me to enjoy this pizza is to take it home. As I'm getting older, either some strange biological phenomenon is causing my ears to become increasingly sensitive to noise, or the infrequencies of my excursions are making me more sensitive, or the acoustics of Masullo's are worthy of philharmonic orchestra practice (or all of the above). After reading Gretchen's reviews of Masullo's we were SO EXCITED to try this pizza. We LOVE pizza. You can't say the word pizza and not cause us to start drooling uncontrollably. But upon walking into the restaurant we knew we'd have to take our pies to go. The fact that every single surface in Masullo's is hard and shiny means that every. single. noise. reverberates. throughout. the. restaurant. Family style tables were filled with patrons who apparently needed to TALK AS LOUD AS THEY POSSIBLE COULD TO EACH OTHER. The din was pierced by the occasional clatter of stacked plates, the clang of pots and pans, and the screech of the wooden chairs against the concrete floors. Nails down the chalkboard, anyone? We had a (small) glass of wine while we waited for our To Go order. Can't go wrong with Boeger. Once home, we discovered that the salad we'd ordered was delicious. The pies while very tasty, were woefully undertopped. I would go back here for more To Go pies, because I loved the crust and the sauce, despite the dearth of toppings. I also felt like the price was fairly appropriate (even if you CAN get a gigantic fully topped near-tasting slice at Sbarro's for a fraction of the price) and the salad was amazing. But unless someone stages an acoustical intervention (carpets? tapestries? a wall between the stoves and the patrons? anything?) if you find me inside these four walls, I'll be the one standing by the door, impatiently tapping my foot, with my fingers shoved in my earholes. read more

A group of 9 of us stopped by Masullo before going to the Dive Bar meet in Land Park. This place is hard to see from the street so make sure you have the address handy. The only sign is a small frosted tree with the name on the door. We waited a few minutes to get a seat to accommodate all of us. The tables are huge solid pieces of wood recycled from a local tree giving the place a rustic, cafeteria-like feel. Service was friendly and the pizzas were made quickly, with the exception of the arugula and prosciutto one, which came out about 10 minutes after everyone else had their pizzas. I ordered the American - pepperoni and mozzarella and it was delicious! I loved the crust, the sauce, the cheese and the meat. B thought his pizza was ok and figured the frozen ones at Trader Joe's were just as good. Some of the pizzas seemed to have skimpy toppings. Online the American pizza is listed as 9$, on the menu is was 10$, and when the bill came it was listed at 11$. We mentioned it to our waitress and she adjusted the price. My only complaint is the noise. Since the space is so open every sound is intensified. By the time we left the place my ears were ringing. Maybe some wall art or fabric on the walls as well as some carpet in certain areas could help. read more

Returned here last night and was still impressed. Wonderful, gorgeous fresh tomato salad with a few different heirloom varieties gussied up with tomatillos, cucumbers, and what I think was lime basil. Then mom and I split the Jacqueline pizza which has a cream sauce, fontina and mozzarella cheeses, morel mushrooms and Nieman Ranch bacon. It was crisp, light, earthy, flavorful perfection. I love that their pizzas are fresh, crisp and relatively light and not laden down with too many toppings. Sometimes I'm in the mood for that type of pizza, but I always feel like a pig afterward. We just moved to Land Park from ATL and sure wanted to like this place as we can walk there. The food was perfectly good and I do like thin crust pizza ( I came to eat toppings not big chunks of dough) so they did well there. The desserts look awesome ( I say look because they sold out of the oatmeal cookie ice cream sandwich). The two big problems were the service and the noise. After waiting 15 minutes for our beer and having already finished our salad I went to inquire after the beer we had ordered before giving the salad order. The waiter said "Oh another round?" And I said no the first one... I had to do the same thing when I ordered my wine. This is a concrete box echo chamber. My head actually hurt. They need to put up a bunch of sound baffling art or something The big question is will I go back...and prolly yes because I can walk there and my daughter can play under the table but I woould actually look forward to it if it were quieter. I assume I'll get another server next time so I'm not too worried about a repeat of the service. read more

If you're looking for a high energy social environment, this isn't the place (try Pizza Rock). But if your priority is high quality food and friendly professional service, you'll find it hard to do any better than Masullo. The salads are interesting, fresh, and delicious. Make you want to lick the bowl clean after finishing. The pizza is first rate. Excellent crust, and terrific sauce and toppings. The ingredients are all (or at least mostly) local, and of highest quality. The menu may not be up to date when you visit, because they modify it according to what is available fresh and high quality. The prices are what you'd expect for food of this quality. Not outlandish but not a "budget pizza" for sure. The service is super friendly, in a sincere and welcoming way. Not the phone "how are we doing tonight" sort of way. I admire several things about Masullo's: - The view overlooking the old cemetery - The traditional authentic Italian pizzas, with chewy, fantastically textured crust - Snail Award means it got the Slow Food stamp of approval. The menu displays many ties to local farms - Ice Cream from Vic's down the street. I want to come back and try the ice cream sandwich, but this time, we were plenty full by the end of our meal. The prices are high in my opinion ($15-18 per pizza - one pizza serves 2- and $13 for a cheese and fruit platter, $15 for antipasti platter), and it gets a little loud in here, but my husband is going to be talking about the pizza for a long time. I'm being a little stingy with my 5th star....I really want to give it to them. I probably should. But 4 0r 5 stars....what I want to say is that this is a great restaurant! Pizza (like all things, I suppose) is a hugely personal preference. For my taste, their pizza could not be better. I love the thin crust, that manages to be thin but not so thin and crispy that you feel like your biting into a cracker, which can sometimes be the case. The hubby and I had the Elisa. Salame, Fennal, Mozerella....fantastic! As seems to be the case with reviews, people always want to talk about whether or not the food is "authentic". Is this "authentic" Itallian pizza? I don't know...I've never been to Italy. My guess would be that, as is true with any country....there are places in Italy that make pizza in this style and places that don't. But more to the point, I don't care if something is "authentic". I care if it's good. And this pizza isn't good... it's great! I also noticed that some reviews have referenced portion-size as a negative at this place. I'm confused by that. Their pizzas are "individual" size...and priced accordingly....and this is an incredibly generously sized portion for one person. My husband and I, who I think have average to above average appetites, shared a pizza, shared a salad and shared the bread and olive oil dipping plate. We were stuffed! No room for dessert.....which they brough us ANYHOW! So with all of this, why no 5th star? I'll say that I didn't love the decor. Don't get me wrong....it's perfectly nice if you like the modern minimalist lounge look....it's just not really my thing. Especially when I'm eating such great "comfort food"....I just prefer a warmer more cozy environment. That being said, I'd eat this pizza sitting on the floor of a garage and be perfectly happy. This was my second visit here and the first time was a hit with us! The salad was excellent and the pizza good. However, on this visit, the salad again was excellent, but we were disappointed in the pizza. We ordered the all meat pizza and I could just about count the pieces of pepperoni on one hand. The large pizza costs almost $15 and the thin crust wasn't crispy but limpy. Had to eat it with a fork and knife instead of with my hands. Don't know if I will return however the atmosphere and decor is very nice and it is a quiet place to eat, unlike other pizza eateries. read more

My biggest problem with Masullo is seating. They have practically none. There are two HUGE tables that take up way too much space and probably cut their potential seating in half. Because of this, be prepared for a long wait. A very long wait. A finish a 22 oz bottle of beer before you get seated long wait. I think it was at least an hour. The pizza is wood fired and very similar to what you can get at Pizza Rock or Hot Italian. A light flakey crust and great toppings and you have a great pizza no matter where you go. Would I go back? Yes, but never to dine in again. The wait was what killed it. If you want Masullo, and I do agree everyone should try it, you NEED to order for take out / pickup. I can't tell you how many people came in just to pick up a pizza and skip the looooong wait. read more

Masullo is the kind of pizza place that probably won't please everyone. First and foremost is the pizza, which is unlike most of what you get in America. It's true Neapolitan pizza, which means a very thin crust, minimal sauce, not much cheese. For instance, their sausage pizza has the thin crust, a thin layer of tomato sauce, and small bits of spicy sausage tossed around the top. That''s it. It's the polar opposite of something like Zelda's or other Chicago-style pizza, where the crust is thick, the toppings plentiful, and you can almost make a meal out of a single slice. But if you like true Neapolitan pizza, you will love Masullo's. The crust is excellent - it has what seems like a micro-thin crunchy exterior over a chewy middle that's sublime. The toppings aren't heaped on but they are absolutely top-notch in terms of quality. Even in the dead of winter, their tomato sauce tastes like it was made from ripe tomatoes just pulled off the vine. If you like arugula, I'd recommend the Mustapha, where the add arugula and prosciutto to the top after the pizza has been cooked. Along with the pizzas, they serve seasonal salads and desserts. I've not had any of the desserts, but I had a caprese salad there last summer made with local tomatoes that was wonderful. I would recommend eating there. You can get pizzas to go but because these are so thin they cool down quickly, so I think they're better eaten on-premises. read more

I'll be the Salmon on this one and swim against the current... After reading all the high marks on Masullo, and it only being down the street in my neighborhood, I was excited to try it out. We took a seat outside since it was summer when we visited and noticed right away that the chairs were very uncomfortable. I'm not sure if this was intentional, but it definitely didn't help. We ordered a glass of wine along with the cheese/fruit plate. The plate was presented quite elegantly but I've had better selections over at Taylor's market. For an entree, we ordered the 3 meats pizza that was... well... not good. We were impressed when it was on the plate but the taste was subpar. The sauce wasn't as rich as I'd hoped for, something like a ragu pasta sauce. The crust tasted a bit burned and dusty. For as close as Masullo is located to my residence, I don't make it out as often as I should. A friend--who'd never been to the place--suggested I show her the ropes recently, and I was more than happy to oblige. First and foremost, Thursday nights are unheralded bargains. Masullo, we found, offers 1/2-priced bottles of wine every Thursday. The three of us hadn't intended on pairing the food with vino, but jumped at the chance to enjoy Boeger selections at $12 or $13 a bottle. We started with the rosemary bread and dipping oil, and added the new-to-menu kale salad (with pistachios). The tangy flavors of the greens paired nicely with the rosemary bread, and we found that between both appetizers, the three of us enjoyed sufficient samplings of what Masullo has to offer. For the entree, we settled on one old favorite and a new choice. Thankfully, our guest picked the Jaqueline (old favorite), which includes thinly-sliced potato pieces with fontina cheese, Niman Ranch bacon, and oregano. It's surprisingly light and delicate, despite what the ingredients might connote. The new choice came via the Mustapha, which includes Mozzarella, grana padano, prosciutto, and a hearty handful of arugula after the baking. Again, this is deliciously light pizza pie--void of heavy cheeses and burdensome sauces. We even dipped into the olive to savor the shreds of baked crust that bore no toppings. In the mood to continue celebrating, we settled on the ice cream sandwich dessert option, which the server kindly divided into three, even (and substantial) segments. The cookie portion alone could have been a dessert option. To clarify, it was a thinly baked oatmeal slab, slightly sweetened with natural flavors and currants. When paired with the lovely vanilla ice cream, however, it evolved into a delectable treat that far exceeded our expectations. I never come away from a pizza dinner claiming to feel un-stuffed, light, or pleasantly satisfied. However, Masullo offers the types of foods and ingredients that make indulging a worthwhile endeavor. Get out and experience this gem. My wife and I enjoyed dinner at Masullo on December 13, 2008, our first visit, where we shared an Eileen pizza, preceded by a small Arugula and small Frisee salad, and followed by a Gingerbread Pudding. Having read the reviews on this site before dinner, we anticipated our dinner with mixed feelings (corresponding to the reviews). Once into the meal, however, we conjectured that the more negative reviews may have been produced by envious Culinary Institute classmates of the owner. It takes a lot for me to give 5 stars to anything, but there is just so much to love about Masullo. First and foremost, I love that it's truly "local." Not only does the chef/owner get most of his ingredients locally and features seasonal menu items, but he even uses wood from a neighborhood tree to furnish the dining room. This is a place where you will get to know the staff by name, and they will be genuinely happy to serve you. Robert will let your kids peer into the kitchen to help make their own pizzas, and he even once wrote down his recipe for pot du creme for us (it wasn't as good when we tried it on our own). Definitely don't judge Masullo for its location. Although it's technically in the Land Park neighborhood, it's in an ugly strip mall, easy to miss, and across from a cemetary. Parking could be better. But once you're inside, you really won't care. The food is fantastic. The salads are interesting and refreshing and generally highlight a seasonal vegetable. This month we had a watermelon and jicama salad appropriately called "104 degrees." We grudgingly had to pass on the heirloom tomato salad. What a sign that Robert gets what it means to live and eat in Sacramento - when it's 104 degrees in August, all you really want to eat is watermelon, and we central valley-ites always salivate for a good late summer heirloom tomato. The pizzas are just wonderful. Ok, now, this is not Round Table. If you want a heavy, salty pile of greasy meat and cheese, don't come to Masullo. There's no "combination" or "stuffed crust". This is neapolitan pizza; fancy pizza. Thin crust, wood-oven baked, simple delightful little pizzas. The ingredients are high quality and everything always tastes fresh. Don't overlook dessert here! We sometimes makes stops to Masullo just for dessert. I recommend sharing. I have never had something I didn't like here, and I always leave thoroughly satisfied. If you love REAL Italian pizza in the Neopolitan style, this is the place for you. We loved it and can't wait to go back! We live in Lincoln and my husband hates to drive further than a few miles for food, but we actually plan ahead to drive the 45 minutes to have the best pizza around. I even like it better than Tony's in SF. I ordered the Margarita and my husband had a meat pizza. We both thought it was amazeballs. We shared a seasonal watermelon salad that was delicious. Is Masullo the best pizza in Sac? Pizza preferences are all over the place, but if you like thin crust, Neapolitan style wood-fired pies as much as I do, it is very close to taking the accolade. We've been to Masullo at least half dozen times in the last year and every time the coupon deal comes online, I make sure to get at least one. Usually they would have $13 for $26 deal which is not going to pay for the dinner, but surely will help. The place is on the small side itself, with shared bench seating through the middle and small, two person tables near the wall. Uber minimalist, somewhat hipsterish decor with bare walls and some art on the wall is a signature of Masullo's. The center point of the room is where the magic happens, a real wood burning brick oven to produce truly delicious Neapolitan pizzas. Pies are $11 and up, depending on the toppings. I always judge a good pizzeria by their margherita and Masullo's delivers with theirs. Simple but not overdone, this might be a split for the best margherita in Sacramento with Hot Italian. Other pies we tried are equally yummy and take only a few minutes to come out of the oven which, when combined with good service, makes for a very kid-friendly experience. When it comes to appetizers, one thing I can't get over is $7 for bread and dipping oil as at most of the places this would be free or maybe few bucks. I could take some points away for this but since they always have few good beers on tap, I won't let it affect the rating. Extra star for their men's room fully equipped with a changing table, wipes and diapers for little ones. My son is older now and no longer needing this but I remember back in the day when he did, hardly any restaurants would have it. It's nice that Masullo's understands what modern dads do nowadays. Little touches like those really set places like Masullo from the bunch. Us coming back here all over again is a true testiment to the quality of the food and service at Masullo. Cute neighborhood pizza place. I had a amazon local deal so my brother and I stopped by on a Saturday for lunch. We got there right when it opened and were the first ones there. We were there maybe 45 minutes to an hour and no one else came in to eat. Not a great sign but a few people did come in to pick up orders. We tried the margherita and the Eileen pizzas. The margherita is a classic, though could've used more basil for my tastes. The Eileen is super tasty with mushrooms, bacon and cream. Actually both pizzas were a little bare and could've used more toppings. Not like piled high so you can't see the cheese but so every bite has a little something besides crust, cheese, and sauce. Also love the thin crust. Both pizzas are about 8" or so in diameter. Not small enough to be personal size but smaller than a medium. It was definitely more than enough for two people and we had a few slices left for breakfast the next day. Food came out quickly. The margherita came out first and they actually apologized for messing up the first Eileen pizza and they had to make another one. I suppose they were supposed to come out at the same time. But less than 10 minutes later, it came out. It was fine with me - the staggered served pizzas. Service was fine. I'd be back. Maybe to get takeout. I was wary of coming here at first due to the auto and smog shop next door but I don't see a problem with it now. Still delicious pizza. read more

How come I haven't been here before? My loss. But discovering such a quaint little joint that serves amazing pizza is my gain! We finally made it here on a Saturday night after months of being on our 'gotta try' list. Intimate with just a handful of tables, the dining room allows you a full view of the pizza goings-on in the kitchen. The pizza oven dominates the show and provides a cozy atmosphere on a chilly night. Started with the mixed greens salad with prosciutto. Quite tasty! Light and full of flavor with a balsamic vinaigrette. For the much-anticipated pizza course, Hubby and I split the American which was simply mozzarella and pepperoni. Sauce was a tad bit thinner than we prefer, but the flavor was pretty awesome. The pepperoni was magical. Not sure how pepperoni can be magical, but it was. Crust was a perfect compliment to the toppings. Not too thick. Not too thin. Parking is readily available out front. Had a a teensy bit of trouble finding the place as the painted sign out front isn't lit. But that just made it more fun. Patrons this particular evening were all families and couples. While the pizzas are a bit small (I devoured mine in minutes) they are quite delicious and probably the best ones I've had in Sacramento. Some are a bit more oily than others (especially if they have meat on them) so prepare to have messy fingers. The atmosphere is great, the waiters are accommodating and the wait isn't too long. Now granted I've come during odd hours before the dinner rush or right before it closes so it wasn't ever too crowded. For the price however I wish I received a bigger piece. read more

Took a friend here. We shared a plate of the antipasto -- full of cured meat, veggies and cheese. In retrospect, we should've chosen the cheese and fruit plate -- my friend doesn't like so much meat, and there was really only one cheese on the plate. But everything we had was delicious. We also ordered the Eileen pizza to share -- anything with mushrooms and bacon has my vote. The mushrooms were called something like hedgehog mushrooms. They were tiny, cute and delicious. Enjoyed our dinner very much. I think my only complaints are parking -- kinda dicey -- small dining area (but very interesting wood tables) and ... the one time I tried to come here for lunch, they were still closed past noon, and they allegedly open at 11:30. I saw someone sweeping, so maybe they just didn't turn over the sign. But it was lost business that day. Luckily, I took the plunge with my friend the other night and we enjoyed it. Our server was really friendly. Definitely would come back. I could probably eat that whole Eileen pizza by myself next time. read more

I've been wanting to come here for the longest time (but I always think about Masullo's on Sundays...) and finally got the chance! After perusing lots of yelp photos I knew what to expect: thin crust, very lightly topped pizzas. I was right, but I've gotta say their toppings and that tomato sauce hit the spot. I was slightly disappointed in the crust - a little too flimsy for my liking. I wish the slice supported itself when you picked it up, rather than having to hold it underneath. The non-tomato sauce pizza we had was also really good. Alas, One Speed is still my local favorite. Lastly, say what you will, but I would rather go out to dinner without seeing the picture-perfect Land Park families that bring all of their little kids along with them. It's just a little uncomfortable for me if I'm not dressed in my J Crew sweater. Aside from the clientele, Masullo has got everything going for it - awesome sleek decor, great staff, and pretty dang good pizza. And that cherry ice cream they get from Vic's was unbelievable! read more

Great space (though across the street from the cemetery). Higher ceilings, great long wood tables, some minimalist art on the wall, and a kitchen that you can see (for the most part). The menu here offers a wide range of pizzas to choose from, from simple pepperoni (though it's so much more than that) and more complex pairings of flavors. Every one of them is sure to please your palate. The salads here are good and fresh, and rather large for the price, though maybe a little sparse on the dressing/vinaigrette. The help here is nice and polite, and helpful. A superb addition to the Sacramento food scene. read more

I have just returned from having the best pizza I have every tasted! I read about Masullo Pizza from Sacramento Bee Reviewer Blair Anthony Robertson. I decided to experience it for myself. The family and I hopped in the car and headed over at 7:30 on a Saturday night. I thought it would be crazy busy but luckily we were immediately seated. The service was spot on and remained steady throughout our dining experience. We started off with the rosemary bread and dipping oil and we also ordered the rosemary salted almonds. The dipping oil was AMAZING! Thankfully the sell the stuff and we promptly snatched up a bottle to take home with us. It's locally made in small batches and the flavor is out of this world. The almonds and bread also fabulous. I will sound like a broken record because everything we ordered was delicious. After our appetizers we enjoyed the Margherita pizza and also the Lotte. The pizza is served with a jar of flavorful parmesean cheese and olive oil flavored with chili peppers. The pizzas are cooked in wood fired ovens at 800 degrees. The crust is heavenly and the flavor is melt in your mouth goodness. I can't wait to return to try other pizza flavors. This is EASILY my new favorite pizza EVER. It's been a long time since I could recommend a place with such fervor. Run -- don't walk -- to Masullo's when you want to experience what pizza is all about. This is real deal! Thank you Masullo's. I came to Masullo's for dinner on a double date this past Saturday and it was quite busy. The restaurant is on the small side and easily feels cramped on a busy night. If you're a party of two then there are private tables along the perimeter of the space for use, but any larger and you'll have to sit at the large community tables in the center of the restaurant. The communal tables aren't bad, they're just an interesting change from most restaurants. We each ordered a pizza and decided to all share so we could taste different ones. Our group ended up with the Elisa, the Gilda, the Kathryn, and the American. I typically enjoy thin, crispy crust, but I did find the crust to be a bit flimsy in the sense that it quickly got soggy and couldn't really withstand the weight of the toppings. The flavors on all the pizzas were enjoyable and my personal favorites were the Gilda (no tomato sauce, onions, olives, fontina, & mozzarella) and the Elisa (tomato sauce, fennel, onions, ham, roasted peppers, mozzarella). We also ordered the rosemary bread as an appetizer with dipping sauce (a.k.a $2 worth of olive oil in a little container) which was burnt on the edges and bland in general. Non-alcoholic beverages are not from a tap, so they'll cost you a few bucks per bottle/glass with no refills. They also have beer/cider on tap for a pricey $6+/pint. The bill for 4 pizzas, 4 sodas, and an appetizer was just about $100. I think it's a bit overpriced for what it was, but I'm still glad I tried it. read more

I'm disappointed in giving this place such a low rating. Lets start with location, ideally of you have never heard of this place you won't ever find it. It's considerably a "local" place so if you aren't to familiar with the neighborhood you will drive right by it. Food, I have tried this place three times in hopes that my experience gets better, and it hasn't. As a vegetarian,I am happy with the vegetarian options, but My pizza always seems to get to my table and it's medium in temperature, and I cannot get by on cold pizza. I do understand that they thrive on their thin crust pizza, but I personally am not a fan of thin crust. I do thoroughly enjoy their salads but I find it hard to go out and just eat salads.... Service. This is truly a hit and miss. I find that some of the servers enjoy their job others just simply work for a pay check. I believe that if you want a reasonable tip from me, you smile and give me good service. Again hit an miss. I do not recommend this place to people, if anything I suggest little caesars because you obviously know the quality of what you're getting for the price. read more

Masullo may very well be my new favorite spot in Sacramento. Everything about it is hip, cool, and well, delicious. The setting is beautiful, well, I thought it was, my husband said it was a bit too hip for his taste. Its industrial meets the forest... with slate walls and floors, but amazing wood tables and benches. We started our meal with a beer for the husband and some wine for me... and really, any place that serves me red wine in a small tumbler gets extra points from me. The wine selection was great, and the beer selection interesting and different, in a good way. As an appetizer, we enjoyed the fresh tomatoes with buffalo mozzerella, olive oil and basil. AMAZING! Of course, its tomato season in the Sac valley, so I expected some delicious tomatoes, but you can always mess up this dish with lackluster olive oil (I'm an olive oil snob, I'll admit it) but the olive oil at this place rocks, I think they even sell bottles of it. We each had a pizza for our entrees. I had the potato and cheese with oregano (or thyme? Can't remember) and it was amazing. My husband had the pizza with prosciutto and arugula, it was also great. The key to this pizza is the crust, which is flakey and crispy and also chewy. Really good. I can tell Masullo spent some time mastering his dough recipe. Masullo himself came out and spoke with us for a bit, and after he told us he got his start in pastries, we ordered a fresh peach tart with fresh whip cream for dessert. amazing. This is a pretty local menu, which I really appreciate, and I love the location. We'll be back at Masullo soon enough. I can't wait to see the fall and winter menus! read more

This is one of those times I really wish that Yelp had half-stars, because I'd love to assign Masullo 3.5. There's a lot they get right--but there's also room for major improvements. First of all, it is still crazy noisy in here. No matter how much "noise-absorbing art" you put on the walls, the reality is that concrete floors and brick walls are going to bounce sound around. It's just gonna be loud. Going deaf is apparently desirable in modern restaurants, because lots of newer places suffer the same problem. I don't find it overwhelming, but it does downgrade the eating experience. Don't expect to be able to chat quietly. We were seated at the family-style table, which I liked, but irked other members of the party. I don't see how the two-tops can possibly be big enough for a pie apiece plus glassware. Did love the water bottles, which both matched the super-clean aesthetics and were environmentally friendly. Service was slow, but not unacceptably so for a busy Friday night. One thing I really disliked was that when lots of folks were waiting, they were stacked up less than a foot behind my husband's back, staring at us eating. At one point there were four women pointing at us and talking about our food. It's a small space, sure, but I also want to eat in freaking peace, okay? This kind of thing pisses me off when I'm paying $20 per person for the meal. Having one dedicated person run the front of house would have helped. We started with an antipasto plate. Slices of mortadella, coppa, hot salami (I think), plus what tasted like Humboldt Fog, fennel, pickled onions, mixed olives, roasted pepper and cracker. I would have liked more veg on the plate to balance some of the heavier, saltier flavors. Eating salami with the cracker was crazy salty, and it's not realistic to think that none of the antipasto elements will be eaten together. However, each individual element was delicious on its own. I especially appreciated the fennel. More important by far: the pies. We tried three: an American with salami added (because the step-son lives on meat); the Lotte (tomato, goat cheese, oyster mushrooms) and the potato/Shaft's blue with sausage added. Potato was late because it had been made wrong according to the server, which probably means they forgot the sausage. No biggie; it came 5 minutes later. Edges of the crust are deliciously blistered and chewy. I could eat these alone. The center of tomato-based pies gets pretty soft about three minutes after serving. To maintain crispness and chew, you'd have to share pies and eat them *fast.* (As a matter of fact, some folks next to us did just this: ordered as they went, which seemed like a great idea.) Flavors on our Lotte and American were very good. FANTASTIC fresh-tasting tomato sauce Creamy-style goat cheese on the Lotte balanced well aginst the oyster mushrooms, though the mushrooms themselves were a bit watery. I would saute off those oyster mushrooms before putting them directly on the pie to concentrate their flavors a bit more. The potato/blue cheese was underseasoned and needed something to balance the Shaft's, which overwhelmed the mild potato. Thin shavings of red onion weren't quite enough to bring everything into balance. Not a favorite. Prices for the food itself are reasonable for the type of dining but not fantastic: range $10-$16 for the pies, $5-10 for apps/salads. Since each pie is meant to serve one, you're basically comparing it to entree prices. It's true that topping coverage is very light. (I estimate that half of a normal sausage went onto our potato pie.) But these type of pies are based on super-light coverage, so it doesn't really bother me. It does mean that the pies made with sauce take on a sameness because you're mostly tasting sauce and crust. Masullo's prices take it into the "every once in a while" category for us; we just can't drop $20 per person for pizza very often--especially not when Luigi's is within walking distance from home. Yes, it's a different kind of pie, but it's also not a great bargain. And could we talk for a moment about the $3.50 Boylan sodas? I get that they're made with cane sugar, not corn syrup. I get that we're on Riverside Boulevard. But IT'S A 12 OUNCE BOTTLE OF SODA for $3.50. Fail. Summary of this tantrum: Noisy spot. Tasty pies with a few downsides. Prices clearly meant for East Sac/Land Park folks. Still worth going for crust edges and deeelish sauce. Definitely avoid on busy Friday/Saturday nights, when you're going to be stared at while eating. read more

I wanted to like this place way more than I did, which was pretty disappointing for me. A buddy of mine used to work here and was always raving about how I should try it, so finally I did. It was good, but there's no way I'd go here again paying as much as I did. The pizzas are thin crust and only one size, 8 slices, which could be shared between two adults for sure. Especially if you got an appetizer. My friend and I ended up getting one appetizer to share (the rosemary bread with dipping oil), a glass of wine each, and two different pizzas to try, one from the tomato sauce category and one not. This came out to just over $50, before tip. The rosemary bread was average, nothing special about it. I was quite disappointed when our pizzas came. It seemed there were barely any ingredients on them. One we ordered had zucchini, sausage, roasted bell peppers, and proscuitto. The ingredients were not distributed throughout over the whole pizza, which was strange to me. Two pieces each had two sausages, two had a strip of proscuitto, two each had one roasted red pepper, and two had a super thin slice of zucchini on them. Not what I expected at all. The other pizza we got however, the ingredients were evenly spread, but there still was not very much of them. Basically, I feel like we spent $50 for bread and two glasses of wine. There was hardly anything on them to call them pizzas. Our server was very nice and the place was quiet and cute, which I enjoyed. But I'd definitely rather go some place else and pay the same or less for an actual pizza. read more
