Anybody who knows me realizes that I can't be bought, and I'm not the type to present a rosy picture that is all sunshine and lollipops to get anybody to like me. I try to present balanced opinions and will explain both the pros and cons to just about any situation so my readers can make an informed decision. I say this because a neighbor (a daughter of a client) emailed me a few days ago raving about a new restaurant in Land Park: Masullo. She had such a wonderful experience to share with me. I wish I could say my experience was the same as hers, but maybe I need to go there again. For starters, the restaurant doesn't have any signage, has been open for a mere three weeks, and for a pizza joint, I thought $50 for dinner was a bit high. The menu is limited, mostly a couple of salads, Neapolitan-style pizza choices, beer, wine and a few desserts. My friend must have showed up when the restaurant was half empty to get her free dessert, because we weren't offered any as she was. I asked to meet the owner, Robert, but Jacqueline, our hostess, said he was too busy in the kitchen. The restaurant is long and narrow, and the kitchen is open to the dining room. The dining room consists of long tables and hard benches on a cement floor. Very urban. There was a long line for dinner when my husband and I arrived, about 6:30 on a Friday night. Seated at a table in front of us was an agent I work with at Lyon. I stopped to talk to her. She said, "Order your pizza with a crispy crust, otherwise, it will be soggy. Oh, and these benches are really hard." There was a party of eight ahead of us, but still plenty of space available. The hostess seated the party of eight before us, even though there was space for a couple. We waited about 20 minutes. After we were seated, our waitress took our drink orders and started to hurry away. But wait, we cried, we know what we want. We were starving and had studied the menu while sitting on the hard bench. First the salads arrived. The dressing was on the light side. I ordered the Arugula with fennel, kumquat slices, shaved Parmesan and a Meyer lemon vinaigrette for $5. My husband chose the mixed greens with a bit of prosciutto for $6. His was a bit more moist than mine. The pizzas, I was warned, were individual sized, but in truth, two people could share that pizza. I chose the four quarters ($11), which was sausage, prosciutto, artichoke and roasted peppers with mozzarella. The ingredients were sparse, so pretty much once slice tasted like the other. Maybe it's due to the runny tomatoes that weren't quite ripe, as each slice of pizza was so thin it almost fell over when forked. But it was good. Don't get me wrong. It was delicious, fire-roasted and just the right amount of olive oil. Mouth watering. My husband had the Sophie ($12), which was potatoes (a bit undercooked and starchy), sausage, fontina, corn and rosemary. Nobody appeared to describe dessert as promised on the menu, but our waitress did ask if we wanted dessert. By then, after consuming two salads and two big pizzas, dessert wasn't possible, even if it was free, which it wasn't. I did notice an inordinate amount of take-out pizza boxes pile up while we were waiting for dinner. Maybe that's the ticket. Order take-out! Because the take-out orders seemed to take precedence over the orders by patrons in the restaurant and outnumbered us all. The atmosphere was noisy. I couldn't hear half of what my husband had to say, and you know what, sometimes, it's better that way. But $50 for dinner was a bit much for a pizza joint. We had two salads, one glass of wine, one water and two pizzas. Here's a tip, if you go there, order a couple salads and share the pizza! Fortunately, we walked there, so walking home meant burning the calories of all the pizza we consumed. Masullo is open for dinner only and located at 2711 Riverside Boulevard in Land Park. The pizza was pretty good, similar to the pizza you get in Italy. It's a really thin crust with a good chew to it. Really light on the toppings. I thought was the sauce was good, not to spicy and just the right amount of acid. The dough itself is pretty neutral. It's Tough to get a seat if you have a party larger than 4. 2 is ideal. We had a party of 6, got there at 5:15 and had to wait for about 30 minutes. There are two long tables that can seat about 14. It would be cool if you had a party of 14 and could get the whole table. Unfortunately they don't take reservations. Fairly expensive for what you get. We got 4 pizzas for 3 adults and 3 children and ate it ALL. I think there are 2 regular parking spaces and 1 handicapped space. so you pretty much have to park on the street somewhere. All of the businesses next door have signs that say tow away 24/7. read more

Pizza is good. Nice and thin. Eat a whole pizza no problem. Sometimes the dough not crispy enough but one of the few pizza spot I recommend.

Jen K's review could be the exact same as mine. I used to go here all the time when they first opened. The pizza was the perfect balance between crispy and chewy without too many toppings competing for attention. I would bring my friends here and they loved it too. Long waits for tables prevented me from coming here for a while. I recently ordered 2 pizza's to go, and I cannot believe this is the same pizza I used to love. Both crusts were undercooked and way too chewy. I felt like I was eating raw dough. The Eileen was bland, and adding salt and pepper couldn't fix it. The Margarita was covered in red sauce and yet it tasted nothing like tomato's. Unfortunately I tossed them both out as they were really inedible. Also, I was charged more for the pizza than what it was listed as on their menu. I feel bad writing such a negative review, especially since I know how good they can be. read more

Let me start by saying, the place is cute. I love the idea of a small pizza kitchen whipping up traditional style pizzas so I understand where they are going, just have a little ways to go. Staff was friendly enough, not super attentive though. I understand we came at an off time but one waitress was not enough. Now onto the grub, I ordered an arugala and prosciutto pizza, and my date ordered a margarita pizza, can't go wrong right? Wrong. Both pizzas were covered in sauce that didn't even taste much like tomatoes, then when we picked up the slices, the crust was so under done that all the toppings fell right off. After a couple bites, we both decided we'd be better off just grabbing the check and leaving. I had some high hopes for this place, but most likely won't be back. read more

Not bad. But not great, either. I dined here about a week ago and it was kind of a mixed bag. I had the 4-meats pizza and I wasn't terribly impressed. Very thin crust and sparse (but flavorful and good quality) toppings. But the crust was burnt and the red sauce was too sweet for my taste. Also, I think it was pricey for what it is. Only two beers on tap, which is almost criminal for a pizza place. The service was good and the decor is alright, if a bit spartan and unfinished feeling. Some art on the giant, blank brick wall would make it nicer. Also, they would benefit from some curb appeal and signage. I've probably driven past the place dozens of times and never knew it was there until I was told about it. All in all, there's nothing about my experience that would make me vow to never return. But there also wasn't enough to make me really want to return. read more

We stopped at Masullo Pizza on the way back from Tahoe based on the positive reviews from Yelp. We got pizzas and salads to go (ate at nearby South Side Park to let the kids run around) and, cazzo! the food was excellent. In addition to the thin crust tomato-based pizzas they also serve pizzas without tomato sauce similar to what I had in Italy which is uncommon. Staff was very nice and helpful, got the warm feeling on a family-run place albeit with a young and modern twist. Will definitely stop there again on our way to/from Tahoe. read more

Worst pizza ever. Way over priced. No toppings at all on the pizza. One piece of sausage per slice. Almost no cheese on them. No flavor. They looked like they were made by a 3 year old. Ended up getting a Papa Murphys instead. Way better. If you like this style pizza go to One Speed or Pizza Rock. Or get a similar pizza at Blaze for $8 with 10 times the toppings. Super bummed. Pretty darn good. I am not doing cartwheels, but it's good. We went on a Monday night and judging from the pics on Yelp, I think a couple of our pizzas were slightly undercooked. There were a couple of guys cooking the pizzas but no real chef or someone 'in charge' which I think could account for the lack of QC. I really like Neapolitan "style" pizza to have chew to the bottom crust, but this was just barely done. Just barely... I actually didn't mind, but the other diners I was with thought so. We had three pizzas. 1) Lotte - Mozarella, Goat Cheese, Oregano, Onions & Oyster Mushrooms. 2) Kathryn - Fontina, Nieman Ranch Ham, Red Fresno Chile Peppers & Crimini Mushrooms. 3) Sausage - Fra'Mani Toscano Salame & Sausage (obviously), Mozarella & Red Chili Flake. I liked the Lotte the best. The combination of flavors was great. We had the Arugula Salad also. Dressed well with a Meyer Lemon Vinaigrette (and not too much) Shaved Grana Padano & Toasted Almonds. Really nice salad. All in all would I go back. Yes, I would/will. Sometimes one craves junky pizza and other times a good pizza. Masullo is a great place for a great pizza. Enjoy. I really liked the pizza here. The best part is that it was tasty and enjoyable, but I didn't feel bloated and weighted down when I left. The caprese salad was also fantastic. The down side of this place for me is with the decor and comfort. It's a long, narrow space. So, they put two long, narrow tables in the middle flanked by tiny two-person tables. Everything is cold and hard. This, coupled with the grey walls and the A/C set a bit low, did not quite make for an uncomfortable eating experience, but the great food and great location deserve much better. Although I love the style and it is visually appealing, it's just not all that comfortable. But, I went for the food, not the decor. Food and service were both great. By the way, they are closed Sundays (I found this out the hard way). read more

This is probably my favorite Pizza place in Sacramento. This opinion falls against the grain with my group of friends but I am thus far committed to Masullo for my occasional Pizza cravings. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service friendly. The dining room is bright and the close seating arrangements gives the place a nice buzz even when it isn't as full. The giant oven and open kitchen also provide a nice atmospheric touch. Full disclosure, I used to embrace "Chicago style" pizza as go-to pizza style of choice. I now understand this to be blasphemy, though said style of pie does have its place occasionally. Masullo really gets the crust right. Great combination of crispy/chewiness and really excellent ingredients on top. I generally lean toward the meatless options which are always stellar. Though the style is similar, I find the atmosphere here far more appealing than Pizza Rock. Parking is also free, if not somewhat inconvenient if they are busy. read more

I really like Masullo! The pizza was awesome. It makes Hot Italian's pizza seem like crap. I had the arugula salad with fennel, shaved grada padano, toasted almonds, and meyer lemon viniagrette. This was the perfect light salad. I loved the toasted almonds. I also had the mustapha pizza with mozzarella, grada padano, prosciutto di parma, and argula added after baking. It might seem weird to be adding argula to a pizza after the baking but it totally worked. The pizza seemed very fresh and it was so tasty from the prosciutto. I would highly recommend sharing a large argula salad with your dining companion and then each person getting their own pizza. You really can't go wrong with the mustapha if you like meat! I took home some pizza to my husband and I can tell you his eyes closed in ecstasy as he was enjoying the pizza. This is a great place if you're in the mood for pizza! read more

This is the best brick oven pizza in Sacramento. A hidden gem in a funky location. The focaccia they serve with the salad could be eaten alone as a meal, but then you wouldn't have room for the delicous pizza. IF you have leftovers ( which you probably wont because you will love it so much you wont be able to stop your self) you can always take it home, so the best bet is to order one pizza per person. Beautiful flavours, amazing textures and a lovely atmosphere. The brick oven and their claim to using fresh local produce is a total plus to anyone with taste buds! I've only had their margherita but the crust was crispy and soft ( how I like it ) the sauce tasted of actual tomatoes and it wasn't over bearing. The mozzarella was perfectly melted and the basil was a fresh and delicious smack in the face as it should be. In addition to the pizza, the rosemary almonds were to die for and the house-made ginger ale spritzer alone is more than enough reason for several return trips. Our server for the evening was Hunter and he was perfectly helpful in getting us our table when the place was busy. You rarely find servers with actual personality and grace and his shined through and made our night even more enjoyable. The servings are best for sharing with a few friends. The price is more than reasonable for what you're getting. We're looking forward to becoming regulars! read more

Tried this place with Andrew N. because he had a groupon for it. I was pleasantly surprised by the simple and clean decor. It wasn't crowded when we got there after work, but it picked up really soon after. We shared the antipasta appetizer which was huge! There were like 4-5 different types of cured meats, olives, pickles, cheese and fennel. We ordered the Jacqueline pizza which had potatoes on it. I saw potatoes on pizza when I was in Italy and wanted to try it. It was super yummy! I love neapolitan pizzas and the crust on this one was perfectly chewy and thin. They also use really fresh ingredients which you can clearly taste, especially the olive oil. Yum. One pizza and one appetizer and we were stuffed. My husband and I came to Masullo last Friday night. The place wasn't very busy, which made me a little nervous and sad. The inside is nice and you can see into the kitchen in the back, which is very common now a days. We sat outside though because we had our dog with us. The waitress was very nice and brought our dog a big pail of water to drink out of through the dinner. I ordered the house white wine and we split the Mustapha pizza. The pizza was really good with nice pieces of prosciutto and a good amount of arugula on top. The crust was a little flimsy, but it had nice flavor and was filling enough for the both of us. The wine was really good as well. My husband then ordered a plum tart which was the dessert special of the night. I'm not a big plum fan, so I didn't try it, but my husband really enjoyed it. I definitely want to try one of their other desserts since there are so many pictures of them on Yelp! read more

Exquisite in every way. From the cheese and fruit plate that included local cherries to the mind blowing chocolate pudding for dessert, Masullo is an all around and unexpected Sacramento treat. After a day in the Sacramento sun, we over ordered. With two pizzas, a cheese and fruit plate and arugula salad in front of us, we set out to do our best. The tomato sauce on the 4 Quarters pizza was out of this world flavorful and I couldn't get enough of the oyster mushroom and bacon combo on the Eileen. Don't leave without dessert. There is a selection of Vic's ice cream, which I can only guess from sampling the Italian cherry flavor, that it's a great local ice cream joint. The chocolate pudding was spoon by spoon delicious. So good that I felt inspired to ask for the recipe so I could replicate at home. To my surprise, the owner came out and personally delivered a hand written recipe for me. Been here a handful of times. It is about a half mile from my house. I'm so happy to have yummy places in the neighborhood, and this place does not disappoint. The communal seating tables worried me a bit at first, but they can be a great way to meet your neighbors instead of pretending that you do not live in a community. Last night I was there and ended up sitting next to Darrell Steinberg. Go figure. Even the pols know great pizza. I have tried every veggie pizza on the menu and some of the non-veggie but held the meat. All were good. I would recommend the straight up margherita, or the lotte. Definitely get the app cheese plate if you are hungry and have more than 2 people. The pizzas here are wood-fired, thin crust. Good stuff. Only complaints are that I would like to see draft beer on the menu and would like the cheese plate to come with more bread/cracker. That's alotta cheese! This place has family-friendly bathrooms, good for the bebes, if you're into that sort of thing. I will plan to come here regularly. Did I mention I like those tables? read more

First time at Masullo. Arrived on a Saturday night around 6:30. Party of two (me and my 7 year old son). Waited about 20 minutes for a table. We sat at one of the long picnic style tables. Great table mates made for a fun evening. For an appetizer we had the Rosemary bread with olive oil dipping sauce. Excellent bread and very fresh olive oil. The Margherita pizza was fresh and tasty. The crust tasted great but was a bit flimsy. Not enough basil (in fact they were down right stingy with it). The sauce was tasty but unexciting. Desert was a root bear float that included Vic's Icecream and a very tasty small brand root beer. Overall, we enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. We will come back. Came for dinner with a group of 10 on a Thursday night. Place was very busy so we had to wait a while for a community table to open up to accommodate us. Totally understand. The owner went out of his way to engage us while we waited. Took drink orders to enjoy while waiting, placed our meal order in advance so that when we were able to sit we would get food right away. When our table finally opened up - 30 to 40 minutes maybe - salads were dropped immediately on the table. Pizza's started flying out before we could even finish our salads, which was fine because we were all ravenous at this point. Recommendations: Citrus salad with arugula, 4 quarters pizza and mushroom pizza without red sauce. Definitely will go back - with a group or on a date. read more

Now granted, there is sometimes something to be said for that big, fat, loaded with toppings American style pizza, but Masullo offers something a bit different - and better. Pizzas are more refined - on the thin side and not overloaded with toppings. Ingredients are topnotch and very fresh. But don't worry, you still get that irresistible pizza goodness! We shared a large mixed greens salad first. This is a nice size for two, has wonderful prosciutto and is lightly dressed w/ a simple vinaigrette that I loved. I would've been happy to have a little more prosciutto, but it was a very nice salad. It came with two slices of the pizza crust as bread. Yum! Then we shared two pizzas: the Margherita and the Sausage. The sauce is a bright and very fresh and nicely seasoned. Both pizzas were overall deelish. The crust is very tasty and neither too crisp nor too doughy. Two small complaints: next time I think I would ask for extra basil on the Margherita (because I felt it was a bit skimpy on that front) and I think I might add mushrooms or something to the Sausage pizza for a little extra zip. The fella said he thought it would've been good if they browned and crumbled the sausage all over rather than having the little rounds dotting the pizza here and there. At any rate, very tasty and satisfying and we took three slices home. They have some good natural sodas and a nice little wine list. Service was *super* friendly and we'll definitely be back. Yeah, you are gonna pay a little more than you would for the aforementioned late-night junk food kind of pizza, so save Masullo for when you want something low key and easy but with a little more quality and class than your standard issue pizza joint. read more

We had heard really great things about Masullo so decided to check it out. Staff was friendly, ambiance was nice- a little too open, loud, and bright for my personal preference, but was a nice space with beautiful chairs and tables. The food was good but skip the pepper appetizer-$7 for a handful of sauteed peppers. Pizza was delicious, especially the crust, but topping were sparse. Overall, I'm glad I tried it but because of the price, I won't be back. read more

What a hidden gem. Not really easy to spot if you don't know the neighborhood. But it is well worth finding! We had the most delicious appetizer of finely sliced aged pork drizzled in a citrus olive oil with finger limes and pomegranite seeds sprinkled on top. So simple, so delicate the pork looked like butterflies on the plate, what a lovely plate. We had to pizza the Elisa and I think the other was called Eileen. Both were great! I had been there once before alone and had the most lovely meal, this time I shared it with family and we are still raving about how great the food was. Oh and if you love mousse and coffee, their pot of creme dessert is to die for! read more

This place is delicious. The pizza crust is thin. They have no ranch dipping sauce which i was disappointed to find out about at first, but out server gave us apple cider vinaigrette sauce to dip in that was cold to make the sauce thicker and it hit the spot. We had the Elise and the Elaine pizza. The sauce was perfect and not layered on too thick along with the toppings. I think there could've been more toppings on each pizza but that was miner compared to the quality and taste of the pizza. The coffee along with the chocolate almond cake was a nice combo too. Blink and you can miss this place on Riverside. From the outside it looks like a salon. Went there @ a lunch time, so waiter service cannot be really judged since we were the only ppl in there. The cooking time of the pizza was pretty quick however the pizza itself was not too great. The dough was a little burn, it did not have a crispy texture more bready considering it was thin. not much topping considering the cost of their pizza. Holding the pizza felt floppy and sloppy when you bit into it. The toppings fell off the little cheese that there was and to cap it.....The water tasted bad..... Reviving this memory has made me dislike this place more. Luckily for me I went to Rome last summer and I have the memory of Pizza. read more

Husband and I ate here for first time this evening. Surprisingly, place was not crowded at 7:30 on a summer night. First thing I noticed was the lack of music. It's one of those things that you probably don't realize is present in other restaurant settings but when it's missing, you can really notice the absence of it. I thought the pizza was just ok, while my husband really liked it. We went to Hot Italian not too long ago for first time as well and I have to say I liked their pizza better. I liked the crust at HI better (crispier) while Masullo's was chewier. Husband thought other way around - liked Masullo's over HI. He definitely preferred the atmosphere of Masullo's. I really WANT to like Masullo's more but for now, I can't say that is so. Service was better than at HI. Owner even came out and spoke to each table, which I thought was classy and nice. read more

Yelp always gives me the best suggestions for dining. Masullo was no exception. The restaurant is very modern looking, all concrete and metal and hard edges. A small, chilly building, we sat down to try the Elisa pizza, which had salami, onions, fennel, oregano, and pecorino cheese. At lunch time on a Friday, it isn't very crowded at all, which is all well and good, since the restaurant is very small. The pizza came quickly, looking wonderful. And tasting wonderful. the salami was fatty and salty and absolutely delicious. The sauce was light, and don't get my started on the crust. It made me want to keep eating. The crust was like bread, but thin like a pizza crust should be. Chewy and crisp and light. Wonderful. And the cheese was creamy and smooth. This pizza was magic. Exotic little hard candies came with our check. French and delicious! Thank you, Yelp, for another glorious recommendation. We were still hungry after, though, so if you have enough money, get your own pizza and don't share! read more

We had he marghertia and americana our first time. I personally was dissapointed with the margherita based on photos and reviews from yelp. It was good the first few slices, but cooled down too quickly and the basils were absorbing too much into the sauce. It reminded me of cough syrup.. Our second visit we had the 3 meats, which is a personal favorite of mine and it will be something I order again in the future. My only recommendations about this place is order small portions and share because the pizzas cools down too darn fast regardless whether you are sitting indoors or outside. The pizzas are sometimes also soggy towards the center, I had to roll them up and eat them like a fruit roll up to avoid spilling everything on my clothes. This place can be pretty good, but sometimes their pizzas are hit or miss.Their menu is quite limited, but still a good variety to choose from. We arrived on a super busy evening and were seated 30 minutes later, but the staff were very nice and attentive. The parking here also really sucks, we had to park on the side where all the homes were and just walked about 5 minutes. You can't miss the place though, they're right across from the cemetery..or at least that's how I remember them by. read more

I went in for dinner as a first timer . Such a cute hole in the wall location . Paul was our waiter . He was great . He hit all his service points and was knowledgeable about everything on the menu.
