Matsu was overall a good experience, especially food-wise. The sushi tasted fresh and high quality, and the udon was hands down the star of the meal -- comforting, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. That alone would make me come back. A big bonus was that most of what we ordered was from happy hour, which made it feel like a great deal for the quality you're getting. The only downside was the service. It felt a bit wishy-washy -- friendliness was inconsistent, and toward the end of our visit the server came off slightly rude, especially as we were getting ready to leave. It didn't ruin the meal, but it did take away from the overall experience. That said, the food (especially the udon!) really stood out. I'd come back for that alone and hope the service is better next time.

    Matsu Roll, $25 - 4.5 Stars

Matsu is a well decorated and charming higher-end Japanese restaurant at an easy walking distance north of the stadiums. Considering this is a sports and bars neighborhood, I love this eclectic choice and speaks volumes about Seattle. Our server was patient and help. Overall, the food is acceptable with some inconsistencies; sushi items are better than kitchen items. If I want a meal near the stadiums that isn't bar/pub food, I would eat here again. If I desire sushi or Japanese food, I would not purposely come here. Parking is street or paid lot/garage parking only. The Food: Bluefin Tuna Sampler, $30 - 4.5 Stars Menu: otoro, chutoro, akami, negi toro This was a very good tuna sampler. I would order this again. Salmon Trio, $14 - 3.5 Stars Menu: atlantic, wild sockeye, wild white king Hubby is a big fan of salmon sushi but thought this trio was just ok. Things were slightly off (hard to describe). We've had better elsewhere. Hamachi Kama, $17 - 2.5 Stars The larger left piece was cooked correctly, still tender. The smaller right piece was grilled too long and was dry. Their grill needs to be scrapped better between use. Some of those black bits were not from this hamachi - too many loose bits leftover from previous item(s). The plating could have been better, too. The items looked like they just threw the items on the plate. My mom would say it's missing heart. Black Cod Kasuzuke, $18 - 2 Stars Menu: marinated in sake kasu w/ sesame seeds, saikyo miso glaze The black cod was visually appealing, but it was mushy. The texture was all wrong lacking the firm, slightly springy feel. Very abnormal for black cod. Matsu Roll, $25 - 4.5 Stars Menu: snow crab mix, shibazuke, cilantro & cucumber topped w/ sockeye salmon, black tobiko, scallion & yuzu miso citrus Their namesake roll was appealing with a good mixture of seafood and condiment. Worthy ordering again. Spicy Rainbow Roll, $22 - 3.5 Stars Menu: spicy snow crab mix & cucumber topped w/ tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, avocado, tobiko & spicy aioli This roll should have been good, but the rice was too wet while the seafood on top was over-powered by the sloppy and excessive application of the spicy aioli. Some of the food preparation mistakes are basic. The restaurant wasn't busy. The over-grilling, sloppy plating, and excess sauce should not have happened.

Great sushi restaurant to try! I loved the ambiance. It can be for a special occasion or just to hangout! There's plenty of seating and it's pretty clean and organized with good lighting throughout the restaurant. We had their King Street Roll, Bad Boy, Crunchy Roll, Seattle Roll, Sashimi, and Creamy Udon. All of them were pretty good! My favorite roll was their King Street Roll that came with creamy scallops and seared salmon. The roll was pretty tasty and it was good portioning! Highly recommend it. I also liked their Bad Boy, as their fried roll with eel was pretty tasty. The service was good. The server addressed any questions we had and the food didn't take long to make. They have a Happy Hour menu so I highly recommend going around that time!

This is a great place to come to for happy hour near the stadiums. There's a wide variety and something for everyone. However, they do not offer HH during event days. Reservations are encouraged.

Matsu is easily one of my favorite neighborhood spots. The bartenders always remember you, which says a lot about the kind of service they provide....warm, consistent, and genuine every time. The ambiance is classy but chill, making it a great place to unwind after work or grab dinner and drinks with friends without it ever feeling pretentious. The customer service is always on point, and the food and drinks are top quality. My only gripe is the pricing. Food and drinks are on the higher end, which makes it tough to make this a regular daily or weekly spot, even though I live nearby and would love to. Still, Matsu remains a go-to when I want great food, great people, and that elevated yet relaxed atmosphere that's hard to find anywhere else in pioneer square.

I needed some fuel after a long day. We had our suitcases straight from the ferry stations and walked here. The host was incredibly sweet and offered to take our bags. She put them in a closet behind the host table. This was so nice especially since we had a lot of bags we were carrying. We were seated immediately. I highly recommend coming during happy hour. There were only 5 minutes left and our server took our order immediately which was so kind. We were able to put in an order of the Seattle roll (salmon avocado roll) and some nigiri. The fish was absolutely delicious. I loved what we ordered. I added another order with scallop, eel, and salmon belly sushi. They were all delicious. The food came out quickly too. This restaurant is super stylish. There is plenty of seating available. There was even a 21+ only seating section. They had women and men restrooms. It was a pretty hip and trendy spot. I highly recommend eating here if you're in the area.

I throughly enjoy every piece of my meal! Edamame was complimentary as soon as you sit down. I ordered a miso soup, 007 roll and shishito peppers, everything was delicious! I live out of the city but would definitely come back to this spot in future visits.

Matsu has a really modern, elevated ambiance, making it a trendy spot. The majority of the menu is rolls, so if you like Americanized sushi, this is the place for you. A few things fell short for us. The Yakisoba with chicken was strange as it had soggy, fried chicken in it. Also, there are white cloth napkins but disposable chopsticks for dine-in. And while the complimentary edamame was nice, it was really overcooked. Also, the service was a bit slow.

We arrived around 8:40 PM on a Friday. The restaurant was beautiful and spacious! The staff let us know that Happy Hour would start at 9 PM, so we decided to wait and take advantage of it. We ordered Sushi Set A, Sushi Set B, the Seattle Roll, and KFC Wings -- overall, a very good value. Toward the end of our meal, the server got a bit busy as the lounge filled up, so it took a little longer to get his attention. Parking wasn't bad -- free street parking was available nearby at that time.

there are two sides to this restaurant... to the left the bar which is open seating and to the right which is restaurant side. i ate at the bar before a sounders game and it was the least crowded thank god. they still served us fast and super nice staff. we got the 007 roll and the creamy udon and the crunchy seattle plus an amaebi nigiri. the 007 would've been good if it didn't have the slice of lime on each piece -- it left a VERY overpowering lime flavor with each bite and for me it was way too much citrus. i think if they just did a spritz of lime it would be SO good but i had to find the lime pieces and kind of pick them off cause it just felt like i bit into a lime with each bite. the crunchy seattle was delicious! pretty standard but fried well! i do appreciate how skinny they cut their sushi roll slices it made it for easy eating! the creamy udon -- soo good! highly recommend this! i was not expecting to like this as much as i did.

The food was quite good. The service was pretty slow and they looked understaffed. We went on a Friday. We asked for inside but were seated on the patio, which was kind of a bummer as we got asked for money by a houseless person several times while sitting and waiting for our food. The inside was really pretty and chill though so I think if we had been seated inside and service had been a bit faster, I'd definitely come back.

The food took awhile to get to us. The calamari was already a bit cold and we were expecting it to be warmer, but the karage was warmer though (both arrived at the same time). We asked our server if she could have our calamari heated up. The omakase was pretty good size and had a good selection. The caterpillar roll was just your typical unagi roll, and there were cuts that were thinner than expected and easily fell apart when using chopsticks to hold it. Also we were not happy with the agedashi tofu, they used a firmer tofu and we were expecting this to be more siken tofu texture. The grilled hamachi collar was definitely good though, and they did a great job with that one. Also the shrimp heads were fried perfectly as well. Overall it was a good experience but honestly not as memorable. But that's okay if you got great company. I think they were a little understaffed tonight because it also took awhile before they got our payment from us (after they gave us the check).

As I tried to get her attention, I felt like she repeatedly looked at me with annoyance and made me feel unwelcome. Rather than simply explaining the reservation policy herself, she went to get the manager instead. She had a problem with Hispanics. She refused to engaged at all. The way I was treated left me feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed, especially as someone who was genuinely excited to visit. A beautiful venue can only go so far when the hospitality doesn't match. I would have happily accepted that reservations were required if I had simply been treated with basic kindness and respect from the start. I truly hope this was an isolated incident because the location itself is stunning, and the manager handled the situation professionally. Unfortunately, because of my interaction with the bartender I've added in the photos, I don't see myself returning. Sadly they have a Prejudice bartender.
