I have been in box coloring my hair for over 4 years and Sonia my hairstylist was able to convince me NEVER to do that again. I guess the box color has high levels of AMMONIA! I went to Matty's hair salon on Saturday 11/9/2013 to have my Bob hair cut cleaned up and my roots touched up. The owner Luis scheduled me with someone who was not familar with making brown hair blonde and she ended up turning my roots orange. She asked me to stay so she could fix it with additional chemical processing. Had I known she did not know what she was doing with color I would have never sat in her chair. Anyhow, I spent over two hours before finally getting to go only to have to return the following Saturday 11/16/13 for repair. I spent $95 for the first trip and then I was charged for her mistake an additional $40. I called the owner today to tell him I wanted nothing but to let him know I was upset and he said "that's not what he heard, that his employee told him I did not want to use bleach in my hair", I told him this was false, I did not want foils in my hair bc unless you're good at foil they bleed, he cut me off and said "well that's not what my employee told me" I told him I have pictures to show him my damaged clothing from that day and it added insult to injury that I was charged again for her mistake. She was careless washing my hair sending water down my shirt and bra. My hair is not the color I asked for, my shirt is completely bleached and ruined and not even an apology. This is unacceptable. I will never again go to Matty's Salon! My sister and I made appointments to have updo's done for her wedding at Matty's. We were ten minutes late for our appintment due to last minute wedding errands. When we arrived the receptionist was very rude, and was speaking to our hair stylists in spanish. The entire time they were tacky, and unprofessional, and talking negatively about my sister and I in spanish. Saying things like "I know this girl doesn't think she is getting an updo with her very long hair, arriving late" My sister and I have half German and half Mexican. Our stylists had no idea we spoke spanish. As we left the salon we said "Have a good day" in spanish, and their jaws just dropped. read more

I've been going to Matty's for over a decade....Matty does the best waxing and it's a good price, too! I've also been getting my hair done here for years. I've tried different stylists and they've all done a great job. I recommend making an appointment but they take walk ins too. I recently had to make several appointments for a last minute wedding and they were super accomodating and fit us all in. I love how everyone complains that they don't like to go to this place as though you only have ONE Hair Stylist to pick from there. Okay, someone didn't do a good job on your hair, it's not the place, it's that stylist. Give it another try but with another stylist. Caro has been doing my hair for years, and she is fantastic. Not only does she listen to what you want, she will tell you what would look better. And when she gives me a high light or hair dye, it always comes out great, and I get so many compliments. read more

I've been to this salon twice, the last of which was today. The first time I went my haircut was nice but not really what I was looking for. I have a lot of volume in my hair and wanted some of it kept. I do not like having my hair flat ironed to my skull! Today I went in for a trim and relayering, and I was extremely happy with the results. I have only had a haircut a few times in my life that I have liked this much. My hairstylist ( I don't remember his name, but he's the only vietnamese stylist) really listened to what I wanted and left plenty of loose curls at the bottom while keeping the top of my hair nice and neat. My boyfriend complimented my hair immediately, saying he has never seen it look so good. I recommend my stylist today! read more

Highly recommend this salon! My first visit was for an eybrow wax with Matty. She is excellent! Definately knows what she is doing. Previously I had been going to different nail salons trying to find someone that knew what they were doing, only to find disappointment each time. Since I was so pleased with my eybrows I decided to give this salon a try for my cut and color as well. Again. so happy I did. Gloria has done my color and cut each time. She does an excellent job as well. I always walk out of there with exactly what I wanted. I had been going to an extemely over priced salon here in Chula Vista with all the frills, however, when you are spending over $200 for cut and color every few months it begins to get a bit ridiculous. The prices at Matty's are very reasonable. I have always walked out of there very happy with the service and don't feel I need to go take out a loan to get through the next few months. So one evening unexpectedly I decided I needed to get my hair cut. So j stopped by mattys salon since I had been there previously a few months ago. Unfortunately they weren't able to take me as a walk in but was able to make me an appt the next morning which was understandable. Well next morning I show up a little early and the person j talked to the day before greeting me by name! I didn't expect him to recognize who I was out of my scrubs much less remember me by name! Well the rest of the appt went smooth as well. I was called about 10 mins after my appt time, but I didn't mind. The lady who did my hair was nice and talkative and made the time not seem quite as long, unlike some hair dressers who are literally mute the entire time... Definately going back. read more

I recently moved to Chula Vista and was hoping to find a good hairstylist. I would not recommend this salon and wouldn't come here again. I'm glad all I got was a bang trim. The stylist didn't introduce herself at all and gave me a bad bang trim (that lol about 5 minutes. She wasn't gentle at all with my hair and seemed annoyed when I asked her to blend the bangs in more (she had made them very choppy). The salon didn't have an inviting vibe at all and the stylist seemed to just want to get the job over with. I will be taking my business elsewhere...and hoping that my bangs grow out soon. read more

I would like to take some time, finally, and write about my experience at Matty's. I went to Matty's to have my hair done for my wedding day back in July. At my sister-in-law's request, we had stopped by maybe a month before my wedding date to inquire about prices, the hairstyle I wanted and booking the appointment. I showed the man who sits at the front desk to check customers in, book appointments, answer phones, etc. a photograph on my iPad of the hairstyle I wanted. I asked him, could the stylists do this type of hairstyle, which was a half updo with curls and waterfall braids. He said "YES". I asked him how much, he quoted me $35. I booked the appointment. The day of my wedding I, along with 3 of my bridesmaids and my photographer, arrived for our appointments. I ended up having to wait for my stylist to finish with his previous customer and when it was finally my turn and I showed the stylist the photograph of what I wanted, he proceeds to tell me he "does not know how to do braids"! Of course I freak out and tell him how the man who scheduled my appointment told me "no problem, we can do it". I confront that man and we get into a heated back and forth about him telling me they could do it and now all of a sudden they can't. I reminded him how the day I came in and booked the appointment how I asked if I could show my picture to the stylist and he told me not to worry, that it was simple and they could do it. He denied this and when I made a comment along the lines of asking him sacrastically "Oh, so this is my fault?", he had the nerve to say to me, a paying customer who brought along two more paying customers, "Yes"! I was beyond outraged, insulted, humiliated and frustrated. I was stuck between a rock and hard place with the possibility of trying to have to find somewhere else to do my hair the day of my wedding. So I gritted my teeth and stuck it out. My stylist, a man named Joseph, was a very kind individual. Another stylist came over and started the waterfall braids, which I appreciated, but they were sloppy and loose. I asked Joseph just to take them out and do something else. He did a type of twist instead, which ended up coming loose on one side by the time I walked to the car. They ended up charging me $55 (plus tip, which I was only generous with because of my misdirected anger towards him when he told me he couldn't do braids and his kind personality). Overall, this man who sits at the front (dark haired, wears glasses) was an absolute jerk and made my experience there and on my wedding day absoultely horrible! I can not believe the way he spoke to me and treated me being that I was a paying customer. I never got an apology from him but my stylist apologized, which wasn't his responsibility to do but I appreciated the gesture. Unfortunately I was not satisfied with my hairstyle, which is very sad because this was my wedding day. I will never go back here again. read more

I had a horrible experience in this salon with the Keratin treatment. My hair is shoulder length, colored and highlighted with a natural wave. I was told at the salon that this treatment would be ideal for my hair type and that it would get rid of the frizz and styling time and would make it look shiny and soft. Instead the opposite happened, the keratin totally ruined my hair, it turned green and frizzier than before, it looks dry and brittle. I've never had such a bad experience with my hair, it looks horrible! Went back to the salon and they didn't care, not even offered an apology, my colorist tried to correct the green color from my hair. NEVER go to this salon for a Brazilian Blowout Keratin Treatment if your hair is color treated. read more

Apparently not. I ended up leaving there with hair up to my shoulders because this chic didn't know how to add layers. She admitted to screwing up, but still had the nerve to ask for a tip. I've been going there for 7 years and i absolutely love their service. my stylist left but all the others a pretty good and friendly and the receptionist greets me by name every time i come in. i go religiously ever 3 to 4 weeks for my eyebrow wax and she does a great job and listens to what you want done. My daughter was there July 21, 2012 to have her hair done for her wedding- she made the appointment and showed him the pix of what she wanted, asked if she should talk to the stylist and was told no, just bring the picture-he can do it. Well, when she came in, he said no, he could not. We told Luis he did say it could be done, and, on her WEDDING day, Luis told my daughter it was her fault, she should have made sure of it beforehand (which she did). Yeah-right. After all that, her hair was done very nicely, but not the waterfall braid she wanted. Do not trust this place, or actually, do not trust Luis. He is rude and had no compassion for a bride on her wadding day. read more

The personalize service you get at Matty's you will not find it at any other salon. Now even my husband goes there too and we won't trust our hair to anybody else. I just moved to Chula Vista and I was looking for a salon/spa comparable to the one I went to in Virginia Beach. I had been going to the same stylist for five years and was scared to have to find a new one. I walked into Matty's and was quickly greeted by a smiling stylist behind the front desk. I asked for the price for highlights and was told the price for what I needed. The price was the same as what four other salons had told me. I was able to get my hair done without an appointment by Patty. She was kind, cheerful, and very professional. She gave me suggestions of what to do to make the color in my hair really pop. Her suggestions were exactly what I wanted and I LOVE my color! I am so glad that I found a great salon so close to home! I totally recommend Matty's! read more

I do not write reviews, but I had such a bad experience and I felt the need to share it. I have been coming to Matty's for almost 2 years and while for the last year, I haven't felt 100% satisfied, I wanted to continue coming here because I thought the service was fine. I came in as a walk-in and they saw me right away. The woman who cut my hair was talkative (I do not know her name, but she was Hispanic, maybe mid 50's, with long blond hair) and we had lots of common. We talked about the burdens of customer service (I too work in customer service). I asked for the Lauren Conrad lob and I showed her several pictures and I was very specific. She cut my hair into a bob, not a lob and one of the sides was uneven. She said she would fix it, but she never could. Then she got a little mad and would tell me "I don't know what's happening, I am following the line". This process was taking more that an hour. I was getting frustrated and I finally told her if she could get her colleague. I hated to be the whiny customer, but I was a PAYING CUSTOMER. She was mad and would tell me that it was an easy fix, but she still got her. Another woman came and looked irritated as well. She told me that to get it even, she would need to cut the longer side. I nodded and said "yes, I know that, but why is it still uneven?" She said nothing and left. The other woman was finally blowing out my hair and by this time, it was a pretty short lob. She kept giving me looks and saying that "it was nothing", "this has never happened to me before". By the time I left, my bob was still uneven. I paid Luis, but I told him the service was bad. He acted like he didn't care. I was pretty mad and I called another salon. After this, I went to Shear Envy Salon on 3rd, where a woman named Martha fixed what she could and I loved the results. I will be going there from now on. I will never come back to Matty's. The haircut was a mess, and they were unprofessional and rude. Also, watch out for their waxing services. I got a wax there a couple of months ago. The woman was pushy and was a bit rude. My eyebrows were not 100% clean by the time she finished. I went to City Nails located between Broadway and F st. The people there are not rude and my eyebrows looked awesome for $6. read more

If I could give this place no stars I would. I took my mother in there for her birthday to get her hair permed. When she washed it two days later, it was flat. No curl in it what so ever. Took her back the second time and the lady did not even style her hair. The perm did not look right, parts of her hair was still straight and that was even with the mass amounts of mousse they put in. When I called, all the owner/manager did was argue with me. I told him I was not going to take her back a third time and wanted a refund. All he did was argue telling me to bring her back. WHY would I bring her back a third time when not even the second time it was done right or treated good. YOU would think that messing up the first time she would get AMAZING service but that was not the case. My mother wanted her hair nice for when my son arrives home from deployment. THIS place was VERY rude. I will be going to the better business bureau about service and will be going against the charges. NEVER take a family member there. read more

Words of advice for anyone who decides to use this salon. MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT.Apparently unless you ask for something specifically,they will not do it.I ended up with striped hair because I failed to a sk for all over color! they blamed it on me.. actually.I thought they were supposed to be the experts.Any salon I ever went to before this one...suggested what I needed. Apparently.. this one works differently.. the stylists wait for you to TELL THEM WHAT you need and well...good luck to you if you don't know the right thing to ask for! The work was mediocre at best...Try Gila Rut. They are down the street a few miles and they actaully know how to use color.Unfortunately,although my hairdresser was a nice guy,he had no clue how to use the new brand of color Matty's had just switched to....In closing,I did PAY for this insult...in more ways than one! I was laughed at by many of my friends....haha....one even offered to buy a box of $9 haircolor and fix it.I paid to go to another salon and have the color PULLED through...I had a lengthy phone follow up with the owner..a nice guy,too..but he also blamed it on miscommunication...in other words..MY BAD for not stating I did not want a striped head! I've been to Matty's several times and have never requested anyone in particular since I've always had good experiences there. Today, however, my experience was beyond disappointing. I went in for a trim to my A-line hairstyle, explaining that I wanted the same type of cut and that I wanted the front to be chin length. She went through and cut it all, but it looked as if she had barely taken off the tips so I nicely asked her if she could take it all up a little shorter. You'd have thought I was asking her to do the impossible. She made it very clear by her deep sighs and attitude that she was extremely annoyed that I asked her to go a little shorter. She even argued with me, which I found to be completely unprofessional. I'm not at all a difficult customer to please, so I was very taken aback by her reaction to my request. It's sad that this one experience with Pilar has ruined my entire opinion of the salon, not to mention ruining my entire day because of the way I was treated. If you're thinking about going to Matty's, make sure you opt for someone other than Pilar. read more
