I absolutely love my Sundays off. What made it even better was an impromptu text I got asking if I wanted to do brunch with part of my gang. Oh yes, please! ATMOSPHERE: Located within the Westin Nanea Ocean Villas, the open-air space is the hotel's sole restaurant. Every table has a view of either the hotel grounds, pool or ocean. Live music serenaded us throughout our brunch. The vibe was relaxing, cool and laid back. BRUNCH: Sundays 10a - 2p. I believe there are two price points; brunch and brunch with bottomless mimosas. We of course went with the latter which cost around $49/person. To start off, mimosas were available in four flavors - orange, pineapple, guava and passion-orange-guava (POG). My friend and I had infinite amounts of the guava version which had the perfect sparkling wine to juice ratio and got us very relaxed. For the buffet, I started off with king crab legs as I wanted to get down and dirty before having breakfast selections. The crab legs were chilled and tasted fresh. They're not pre-cracked so you have some work to do! Cocktail sauce was available but I ate them plain as they had a perfect amount of salt flavor. I had a couple pieces of tako pokē as well, which were surprisingly good with a firm texture and nice amount of seasoning. The scrambled eggs were the only disappointment as they were gritty, possibly due to being actual Egg Beaters or mixed with it. The broiled salmon with Hamakua mushrooms was really moist and tasty, covered in a fresh garlic/oyster sauce mixture. Sides of Portuguese sausage, bacon and fingerling potatoes were good. Other selections available that I didn't have were locally-grown and organic salads and cheeses, prime rib, breads, fruits and desserts. TIP: Unfortunately there was no omelette station and the only reason why this review isn't five stars. SERVICE: Hostess greeting was immediate, professional and friendly. Servers Matt and Luckie took excellent care of us. Our mimosas were constantly refilled and we were checked on throughout our experience. Our first night after they opened was great. We decided to have our last meal here and that was a mistake. They need some more practice. Our salads showed up without dressing. Then we got ranch instead of blue cheese for a wedge. Very slow service. We went back especially for mud pie, we ordered then got told they were out. Located near the pool at Westin Nanea in Maui. Mauka Makai restaurant doesn't have an extremely large menu but a few items did catch our eyes so we decided to give the restaurant a try. Arrived at Mauka Makai around 6:30pm on a Sunday evening and the restaurant wasn't very busy. We were seated immediately in a table that overlooked the pool and Ka'anapali Beach (which was perfect because the sun would be setting over the next 30-40 mins). My wife ordered the butterfish with a side of Brussels sprouts and I ordered the whole crispy fish which was fried to perfection with a side of garlic rice and greens. Both dishes were excellent! My only wish is that the portions were a bit larger since we were paying $30+ per entree. Overall, excellent food! This is the breakfast restaurant in the Westin Nanea. We surrendered 2 days' housekeeping to forego the $30/person breakfast buffet charge and headed in. As you can see, the view is second to none. That alone makes the food taste a notch better. The buffet is well done. I created a bagel-lox-capers breakfast with fresh Maui fruit. Everything was fresh and ripe, flavorful. The coffee was even decent (coffee snob). My husband had the more traditional eggs and potatoes, which he said was 'really good--not $30 good.' There were lots of hot prepared foods to choose from sweet to savory and continental-style foods. I recommend foregoing the housekeeping to check this place out. First and second experience: About a month after they opened, we were there. Outstanding to say the least. The service and food were phenomenal. We told everyone back home in LA they had to come and try this new place. The appetizers and entrees were out of this world delicious and unique. The gnocchi is SO GOOD. I think about it all the time. My favorite dish was the Ahi with garlic rice and tempura asparagus. Their steak dinners are amazing, too. The whole friend fish, too, is a wow! Make sure to share that fried fish. It's huge. 5/5 Free parking at the Westin Villas/Nanea. This restaurant is inside the Kaanapali Nanea Villas Resort near the Pool/beach side. Views are gorgeous. The $25 mai tai is definitely worth a try! Third experience: Disappointing. No where online does it say Friday nights are only buffet, or a very limited menu. When we called for reservations we weren't told either. We choose to stay and ordered from the limited menu and were so sad! Food wasn't the same, but service was still great. BREAKFAST Mauka Makai is a restaurant at the Westin Nanea. The property is very nice and only a couple years old, and they have a Sunday brunch buffet. I am a fan of Bloody Marys, and I tried one for $13. It was good, a little spicy in a good way, and strong. I am not a champagne or mimosa guy, but for someone who is, this should be your spot. The buffet comes with unlimited for both. They also have POG, so it is easy to make POG mimosas. I hear they used to also have bloody marys included. If this were still the case, I would significantly bump up my rating on this brunch buffet experience. The brunch buffet ($54) was very good. As with many buffets, it is important to scout everything out first and then prioritize. My first plate mostly consisted of typical breakfast foods including bacon, sausage, and eggs. I also tried some items on their seafood bar including shrimp, crab legs, and poke. Their salads were fresh and locally sourced. However, the highlights unanimously for all three of us were the lobster mac and cheese, as well as the prime rib. There is also a dessert bar and the favorite for all three was the white cake with strawberries. The service here is excellent. Our server was friendly and attentive. One of my disappointments is not only does the website still say $49 for the buffet instead of the new $54 price, but their 25% Kama'aiana discount does not apply towards their buffet. For how empty the restaurant area was for the hour and a half we were there, I feel that discount on the buffet will be a way to generate some more sales, while also doing something nice for the people who live here. Sunday brunch hours are 10 - 2. We parked at Airport beach and walked ten minutes. Nanea also has valet and the restaurant will validate for free parking. Overall, I am happy I finally checked out this buffet. However, there are definitely better on island. No Kama'aina discount on the buffet and no longer including bloody marys are two drawbacks, especially at $54 per person. No one should have to pay $16 for their toddler to get pancakes, most of which get thrown out because they only have adult portions. It's just disgustingly greedy and such a dumb business move. I went to both the brunch service and the dinner service. I have no pictures from brunch since I was too focused on the amazing all you can eat spread. There were the classic brunch foods as well as many more options like poke from different seafoods, crab legs, roast beef, lobster max&cheese, and tons of other goodies. To balance out the more heavy dishes there was also a spread of 3-4 different salads and fresh fruit. If you go you have to try the panacota for a sweet treat! I learned my lesson from brunch and snapped some pictures from their dinner service. We went just to grab some appetizers and dessert since we weren't too hungry. The food was great and the desserts were to die for. The baked Maui was definitely a favorite. At both brunch and dinner the service was amazing. Mediocre food, outrageous prices, and poor service mean that this is the place to come if you don't want to leave the resort, but after eating here $5 for a cereal bowl at Duke's doesn't seem like such a huge rip-off. There was a long line when we got there so we had to wait a while to be seated and they didn't have any outdoor tables. We ordered French toast with coconut syrup, bacon, and two eggs. The serving of bacon was pretty generous. The French toast did not arrive with the coconut syrup and I couldn't find our server, so I asked someone else who apparently told our server about it but couldn't be bothered to get it herself. Decided to stop in Mauka Makai for breakfast. The view was amazing, and I loved sitting in the outdoor area overlooking the pool. The staff were friendly and promptly found us a table and sat us. Soon, our server Matt B came over to get our drink order. I had some coffee and others had iced tea and juices, all were great! When it came time to order, Matt was fast, friendly, and knew the menu amazingly well. After some thought I was settled on an omelette but after hearing Matt describe the smoked salmon bowl I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try it. The menu seemed very well thought out, with something for everyone. There were so many delicious options to choose from, and I was very happy with the smoked salmon bowl. This dining experience was probably the biggest disappointment to an awesome stay at Nanea. We chose to dine here out of convenience and the fact that the food looked good in all the resort advertising. When we initially walked in they told us it would be a 30 minute wait (which was weird because the place was empty). We said that was ok and then waited in the area they suggested across the hostess stand as opposed to going to the bar because we had kids in tow. Our table was ready about 5 minutes later which makes me think they just wanted to say 30 minutes to deter us from eating there. Maybe the staff is lazy and doesn't like customers?!! A few of us got the ribeye with prawns which was nothing exciting (while the meat was nicely seasoned, the prawns were completely lacking flavor). We also had the risotto which was different and tasty as it was infused with ginger. The food was just ok but the service was horrible. There were probably 3 other tables of diners and out waiter took forever to do anything. If you're charging almost $50 an entree I expect a much higher level of service. And I mean just simple things like refilling drinks, bringing requested items and a little more attentiveness. He was so bad and so absent I had to refer to another waitress who quickly addressed my request and apologized for our waiter. This in-resort location caught our eye as we were walking around the hotel grounds after checking in our first night. We had a late lunch and were looking for some fun apps and a couple of drinks to wrap up our first evening on the island. Our server recommended the House Fried Rice, which we paired with the seared Pork and Ahi and the Hot Stone Natural Prime Beef. The seasoning was great, and we loved the scallion chimichurri that came with the beef (in fact, our server packed us some extra containers of the sauce that we used to cook ourselves breakfast the following morning in the suite). Though a fun eating experience, the portions were petit for the pricing- but all in all was what anyone could expect from a five star hotel restaurant. read more

As a guest at the Westin Nanea, I received a breakfast voucher for participating in the going green program. Food: The food is good but the selection is limited. The food quality is above average but they are mostly predictable. Environment: Excellent views. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating. It's kids friendly. Price: The food is priced similarly as other hotel restaurant buffets. Some places focus on quantity and some focuses on quality. Take your pick. Service: Great, the staff is friendly and check on you often. Summary: Although, the selection is limited, the restaurant the food they put out is at a higher quality. At $29 per adult, you will have to draw your conclusion if it's worth the price. There are more selections on the menu when you go a la carte or you can walk to Duke's nearby. DO NOT GO HERE. The staff is very rude!! The waiters kept STARING at me which was so uncomfortable but apparently no one was able to give me service- despite all the eye contact I had to flag someone down and ask for my waiter. The manager has a lot of attitude. Instead of being a gracious host to her guests she treated me like I was a problem when all I did was ask for service. She even told me they (the staff) didn't think I was there to eat. As a young, solo traveler I found her comment to be VERY offensive, because it almost seemed like she was implying I would be unable to spend money at her overpriced restaurant. And sure enough, before I was even finished eating my food they came with the bill and hovered until I got out my wallet. Maybe I just have too high of expectations for hospitality, although my request seemed pretty standard to me. This restaurant is located in the Nanea Westin Ocean Resort Villas. We called ahead for a reservation and they weren't able to take us at 7:30 but had room for a party of 2 at 8pm. We show up at 8 and the place was practically empty so not sure what's up with that? Drinks were pricey but pretty good. Can't remember the name of the drink I had, some gin concoction that I did enjoy. :-) We shared the Upcountry Gathered Greens salad and the Macadamia Crusted Mahi along with a side of Brussels sprouts. The chef was kind enough to split the salad and entree for us. The Mahi was especially delicious and came with a spicy banana sauce that was ohhhh so good. Brussels sprouts were also extra yummy, we ordered them without the sausage. Portions were on the smaller side so we had room for dessert. My dessert was pretty unique, Chia Pudding with coconut ice cream and some cranberry granita, I think? I really liked it. Hubby had the Baked Maui which he gobbled up. read more

I could not complete this review without at least giving it at one star...it should be ZERO star We had the Sunday brunch seafood buffet and it was good ...and we chatted with one of the server and he told us that there will be the same buffet on Friday night...so we made reservations and invited our guests. When we checked in it was too late to changed to another restaurant when we were told that it's not going to be the seafood buffet. The had the ahi poke which was tasteless, the shrimp poke was the same. I just can't believe that they actually served such bland tasteless food at a Westin property. The food is 4 star but the service was not, hence the 3 star rating. Their cocktails are fabulous and about the same price as all the other resorts along this strip. Small plates are considered appetizers here and share plates are an entree. I had the crispy whole catch, and my husband had the ribeye. Both were very good dishes, adequate for one person. Our server greetedus promptly and got us drinks and took our order. She came back just after we received our food to check on us. That is the last time we saw her until it was time to bring the check. Our water glasses were never refilled. While the food was great, the service was shabby which made for a less pleasant experience. It was not excessively busy to prevent good service, maybe Wednesday is not the next night to come in. read more

The night we arrived, we could not even get in. That was disappointing given that we were coming off 12 hours of traveling and were starving, but even more so considering that about half the tables were empty. We observed that to be the pattern every night ... no reservations available but half the tables empty. I suspect it is a staffing issue. We finally made an advance reservation and ate there our last night on the property. Food quality was a positive -- the ahi, ribeye, sprouts and sweet potatoes were top notch foodie level. The service was not what you'd expect at this price point. We sat about 10 min before we even got a chance to order drinks, and later waited similarly for refills (including water refills). There was live music -- a singer guitarist -- with amps up too much for the setting. I.e., it was louder than restaurant background music and made it hard to talk. I hope they can work out these kinks. This is the main restaurant for a large -- and not cheap -- resort property. The breakfast buffet is way overpriced even by island standards. I mean, this isn't a brunch buffet with prime rib and cook to order omelets ... it's chafing dishes with eggs, potatoes, and fruit. It's hard not to just feel a tad resentful, thinking that it is something they do because they know you aren't going to want to leave the property first thing when you get up. read more

Plan out your dining experiences. With so many good restaurants in the area, I don't know why you'd waste your time here. This is strictly for breakfast. We went on Labor Day morning. My boyfriend opted for the breakfast buffet. I believe it was around $40+. I opted for an omelette because the buffet was basic and unimpressive and definitely not worth the money. After several days on Maui, enjoying delicious food around us, this didn't even compare. One major complaint I have is that the Nanea claims to be an establishment built upon the premise of honoring Hawaiian culture and the fishing village that used to occupy the land. At many other eating establishments that we visited, it is obvious that a variety of the food is freshly made with local ingredients. There was nothing like this here. The jelly was packaged. The juice didn't taste fresh and nothing jumped out as being impressive. Even the coffee was some Starbucks variation. But with that higher price tag, I was expect at least an average breakfast and average service ... both of which they failed to deliver. read more

I absolutely loved everything about Mauka Makai! The atmosphere was perfect, we could see the sunset from our table! The food was delicious! We had the Miso Butterfish and Ahi/Pork Belly appetizers, absolutely incredible! The Big Maui dessert is to die for too! Also, the best Old Fashioned I've ever had! There wasn't a thing I would change about this dinner experience, they made us feel like VIP's. No need to make a reservation for brunch during a week day. We arrived close to 10 and although the outside was busy with guests there were still plenty of good seats. All of the outside seating offers a view of the resort lagoon pools (and would be a great place to watch the sunset if dining later). The hostess was very friendly upon our arrival and seated us right away. She also ensured our table was clean before seating us. Our sever was somewhat attentive although we had to wait to flag him down for a few things. The menu options were plentiful and both my husband and I enjoyed the Crab Benedict. The menu refers to it as a "crab salad", so I questioned it before ordering. It's actually more of a crab cake, which is what I hoped for. The orange grapefruit lemon juice is also refreshing and delicious. I recommend this restaurant for a relaxing and convenient brunch. Request to sit outside! read more
