2x2x2 Sunny side up with old Cholula! Bacon, fruit, French toast, baby!!
Jack M.

Food was absolutely delicious, as usual. It was my son's first time, he ordered flapjacks with chocolate chips! 2x2x2, amazing. Ordered the fruit on the side French toast with Son side up eggs. Fresh and delicious. We went on Sunday morning at 8:30 AM and it wasn't busy. But started to get busy before we left. So I suggest early bird gets the worm here. 7 AM folks!

Check this place out!!! We walk into this cute little place and am greeted with the friendliest smiles. Our server told us all about the menu and how he likes to eat it. He even made the coffee the way I like it. After recommendations, we chose his favorite and it did not disappoint. This is hands down the best meal I've had in a very long time.

Here's a polished version of your review: Super cute and unique little neighborhood spot! Street parking is available, which makes it easy to pop in. The food is a bit on the pricey side, but the portions are generous and definitely worth it. The staff is friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant itself is very clean. Would recommend and go again!

My standard ask: sunny side up single egg and crispy hashbrowns on the side

Hands down a SLAM DUNK! This neighborhood diner serves seriously good food in a comfortable casual setting. Come as you are: hungover or ready for the day My boyfriend and I came in and got our standard asks: my egg and side hash browns and my partner always asks for the eggs Benedict. Absolutely exemplary demonstrations of both! The incredible food and warm, personal service will definitely transcend this just an eclectic diner to a neighborhood staple. Maxwell's or Maxine's - I'm here for it all!!!

Need a break from the bougie restaurants in the ever changing new Mar Vista? Looking for reasonably priced, exceptional food with normal portion sizes? Maxine's is your place! I've never had a meal I didn't love. The staff is amazing and genuinely friendly. My go to is the build your own scramble with turkey sausage, spinach and easy jack with some fresh, and I mean fresh, fruit. Their ice tea is delicious and magical. I love coming here on my days off. Philene is everywhere making sure things are running smoothly. Sal is in the back of the restaurant spreading his joy...and jokes. Kat and Jenny are wherever they are needed with a smile on their faces. Rachel is always so welcoming and happy to see everyone. Sit at the counter and have Dave serve you. Come back and don't be surprised when he remembers your name! I freakin love this place!

My friends and I had a great experience at Maxine's. Sal was our waiter and he really took care of us. We got two of the garbage omelets and a breakfast sandwich as well as an Arnold Palmer. Everything was homemade and fresh. I'll be back soon to try more menu items.

Strawberry Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast yummy!

My Dad and I visited this place for breakfast this past Saturday morning. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and seated immediately. The place is very nostalgic and reminds me of a diner in the middle of big bear. Lol The waitress was personable, kind and attentive. I ordered the chilaquiles with chicken breast, and my Dad had the strawberry cream cheese stuffed French toast. Big portions and food was tasty! I would return and try something else off the menu which is plentiful.

We hadn't tried Maxine's in years and stopped by this morning for brunch. There was a 20 minute wait. We sat at the very rustic counter. We ordered hot chocolate which was pretty good. My husband went for the eggs Benedict and potatoes and I had the make your own omelette. Both were okay. I really liked the extra crispy hash browns too. We like to support neighborhood restaurants so we might be back.

Amazing breakfast/brunch diner in Del Rey. Tons of vintage Dog Town apparel on the walls, all in all makes for a wonderfully eclectic vibe! Food was excellent with generous portions. You can definitely see why this is a local legend!

I had been going to Maxwells for over 20 years! This was my first time trying the new Maxine's! All I can say is, why did we wait so long! The food and service is just as good, actually, better! Best omelette! Coffee is amazing and the service is outstanding and attentive! We are already planning to go back !

My god this place is my favorite diner on the west side. The food is incredible. The service? Amazing. If you ever have the pleasure of Sal serving you, it'll be the best service. The ambiance at Maxine's is cozy, fun and very west LA easygoing and cool. We get a blueberry pancake to share, chilaquiles and the breakfast burrito is so good! Go! You'll love it.

Maxine is a solid four stars. I've been here once before when it was called Max (don't mean to Dead name lol) both times food was taken to go this last time. I ordered a sandwich with the fresh fruit on the side and my boyfriend had the eggs, bacon and french toast breakfast, and got a cup of coffee all in all everything was great. it was a little pricey. It was about $55 pre-tip for the food, but everything tasted great

Food is fine. I am here, because it is hard to eat breakfast when you see suffering animals. THEY HAVE A FISH TANK IN A STRESSFUL ENVIRONMENT AND IT IS FILTHY. I think it's cruel to keep animal in that condition. Please either take care of the animals properly or donate them to a local aquarium store. I get the eclectic style, but please have a heart.

Ask the Community - Maxine's Cafe

Can/do they make chilaquiles with salsa verde?

Yes, you just need to request it. Our salsa verde is homemade and awesome. I always put it on my burrito. We also have homemade habernero, salsa & ranchero sauces

Is there any outdoor seating where I can bring my dog?

Yes there is plenty of room outside and a bowl of water for dog I believe.

Excellent customer service, a variety of delicious dishes and an inviting atmosphere made for a memorable dining experience! 2 Orders of Crispy Rock Shrimp | Shared | This dish was a vibe, and one of my favorites! Plentiful, memorable flavorful & you can't just eat one... You'll keep craving more, which we all did! I highly recommend! Miso Maple Salad | Shared | I selected this salad, it was unique, has quite the bite to it, and I enjoyed it! I would order again! Includes crispy, quinoa, heart of palm, jicama, avocado, snow peas, gem lettuce, and miso maple! Garlic Butter Noodles | Shared | What a favorable combo! I would easily order again! Passion Fruit Mousse | Shared | I took a bite, which was yummy! If an island had a flavor, I feel this would be it! Haha! 2 Orders of Spicy Tuna & Salmon Avocado Roll | Shared | Yum! Both were delicious & The spicy tuna roll was my niece's favorite dish! Sharing is Caring | Shareable plates were my idea, as there were five of us! Why not sample the menu in all of its glory, as well as order a little something, each of us like?! After all, it was my first time dining here! Though all of us enjoyed the shrimp, one bowl of the shrimp was definitely enough for all of us! We didn't know the portion would be so huge! Family Affair | It was exciting having family in town to visit & I selected this restaurant for lunch! I knew that they appreciated places that were aesthetic, as well as had great food! Belles Beach House served Island Glam & memorable bites! There She Glows | She naturally glows, once you step inside, the lighting is so nice! It's such a beautiful place! A extra large seashell, as well as larger than life, wooden carved tiki figures, front and center greet you at the door... full-on Island vibe! While I couldn't remember everyone's name, Ryan's name was on the receipt as the server! Thanks again to everyone! Reservations Please | She's very popular! I highly recommend making reservations, unless you want to wait! If you have to wait, at least you're at the beach, walk around, look inside the shops, & maybe even put your feet in the sand! I don't know how much Parking usually is, but the parking was out of control that day. We paid $45 to park down the street. The food was all VERY delicious. I would say the portion size is on the smaller end. I only had a party of 3, so it worked out for us. We shared a few apps, Spicy Tuna Sticky Rice, Cold Edamame, Teriyaki Burger, Fries, Chicken bites and the poke bowl. Everything tasted fresh, and we loved the fries, they were so crispy and that truffle aioli. Service was fast and easy. We sat chatting for hours and weren't bothered at all.. We would come back for drinks and apps!

The ambiance is beautifully done, modern coastal. Perfect for a comfortable but elevated dinner. We started with the bread service, chili wontons, and gem lettuce. The bread service was my favorite, warm, soft, and the miso butter was divine. The chili wontons were also a standout, especially if you enjoy dim sum. They had great flavor and balance. The gem lettuce was fresh and simple, reminiscent of Jon & Vinny's in the best way. For entrees we had the butter shrimp and Scottish salmon, both really good, no complaints. But honestly the appetizers stole the show for me. Would definitely come back just to try more of the starters. Such a good spot.

It was a Saturday night and pretty empty, but we did go on the earlier side. Our server was also really friendly and attentive, definitely a highlight. The food just didn't hit for us. The bread service was disappointing and looked nothing like the photos we saw. Not sure if we got the wrong thing, but it wasn't good. The shrimp toast was decent but super heavy. The Caesar was not great, and no one mentioned it comes with whole anchovies on top. I'm fine with anchovy in the dressing, but the actual pieces were a lot. The chicken karaage was okay, again really heavy, but the sauce was the best part. We also tried the taco special which was just alright, nothing memorable. Overall, the vibe and service were good, but the food didn't live up to it. Probably wouldn't come back.

The service is REALLY BAD, it took almost 15min just to get a waiter/waitress (when the place was basically empty). When we finally got one (who I suppose didn't think telling us her name was important at all...), it was as if ordering food from her was a total inconvenience to her day when the place wasn't even crowded... The food was not very good either. The ceviche came out extremely fishy and when I told the server this she did not apologize nor try to make it right and gave us a ton of attitude, verbatim saying "what do you want me to do about it? They can't remake it; it's already made and is too tough for the kitchen to remake" - which tells me they are still feeding fishy ceviche to other people, which is alarming and she acted as if I should just eat it anyways... [this was a younger blonde girl in a hat] very strange behavior and extremely poor hospitality. The drinks are super watered down with too much mixer and hardly any alcohol. My girlfriend's fried chicken sandwich was super dry (she didn't finish it as a result) and my burger was pretty awful with little flavor (and very overcooked/charcoaled). The chicken dippers were ok, nothing special - super overfried to be honest (I guess the sauces were decent tho?). The french fries and broccolini may have been the best parts, which is alarming when the sides are significantly better than the mains (and even they weren't very good and had a TON of salt - the broccolini was the only thing we finished). The chips and guacamole were pretty flavorless and we left most of it uneaten. Overall, again, I recommend AVOIDING this place at all costs despite the appearance of a good ambiance just cause it's near the beach, as YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED and waste your money.

Everything we ordered was enjoyable, and the kitchen did a great job. The reason for the 3-star review is the service experience. Our server, who also appeared to be tending bar and possibly handling multiple responsibilities, came across as somewhat dismissive at times. For example, when I asked if the lemonade was freshly made, he jokingly replied, "Haha, not here." While it may have been intended as humor, it didn't come across very professionally. My elderly mother also had to ask several times for ketchup, and although he acknowledged her with a wave and indicated he would return, it took longer than expected. There was also some confusion with one of our orders, and a beer that seemed a bit flat. I want to be fair because the food was good, and I understand that service issues can sometimes be the result of understaffing, lack of training, or management challenges rather than one individual. My intention is not to criticize anyone personally but to provide constructive feedback. I normally don't write reviews, especially negative ones, but I felt this was worth mentioning because the restaurant has a lot of potential. With a little more attention to customer service and communication, the overall experience could easily match the quality of the food.
