Love the fact that they make their tortillas from scratch. As for their camarones a la diabla.....other restaurants range from $16 to $21 and that include 9 to 11 shrimps/prawns. (They also make their tortillas from scratch) This place only gives you seven for nearly $24. (I think this is the most I paid for this dish from any place thus far) I don't mind paying that amount, I would feel more satisfied eating here if they were to stay competitive. This is my hope, because the sauce is pretty tasty. Another thing I wish that they make the sauce a bit more spicy, it was so mild but once again good. read more

Tiny cafe with really quite good Mexican food. Rather thick tortillas. Rice and beans tasty, entrees excellent. They also have a section of the menu for Honduras food. I tried a Honduras tamale, which you could tell from the price was a la carte. (This section of the menu has no other indications of what's a full meal and what isn't.) Like other Central American tamales I've had, it was moist masa with a single large chunk of meat inside, this one with a bone in it. A big bone, so you wouldn't eat it accidentally. I may stick to the Mexican part of the menu, because that's very good. read more

Wow! On many fronts, but the quality of food is really top-notch! We have gone to other restaurants that specialize in papusas (flat, pancake-like, and made of corn flower) including some authentic Salvadoran places. This being a Honduran restaurant serving other delicious offerings, of which papusas are buried among the other dishes. I made the mistake of having eyes larger than my stomach and ordered two papusas, and a super taco, as well as a plate of fried plantains. The queso con chicharrón papusas was stuffed with well-seasoned and tender pork and cheese and had that perfect crispy outside and steaming hot soft inside that outdid the other Salvadoran papusas restaurants. I really could not finish the two AND the super taco (again, easy to look over as it is buried amongst other menu items). The tasty carne asada super taco, even after eating the papusas, made my saliva glands work overtime! Oh, the flavor just cannot be beat! And don't get me started on the plantano frito (fried plantains) - crispy, caramelized, sweet and delicious! I don't know about the other main menu items, but I know from experience that if a restaurant skimps on the basics on the menu, then one may assume that the main dishes cannot be worth ordering. I have eaten at Maya Cafe before and it's always been delicious. But a friend of mine suggested I try their pupusas. I'm not an expert but I do know a good pupusa. These were excellent. They were freshly made and full of meat and cheese and jalapeños. The price is fair and the portions are large. I they are now one of my favorite places.The owner is super helpful and the staff is friendly. The restaurant is clean and they have a big TV and fantastic music. read more

I've been wanting to come to Maya's for a while and I'm really glad I tried it. I really enjoyed the barbacoa plate and my friend loved her bacon wrapped shrimp. I didnt realize that they hand make their corn and flour tortillas, but that made the food even better. We also got one of their specials, the pork chop in sauce over plantains and cabbage. I wasn't a huge fan of this one, but I think I'm just not used to having plantains as my starch. It takes about 20 min to get your food. Parking was easy. Everyone was very nice there as well! 3.5 stars! My bf and I got take out here twice! Both times we ordered two dishes and one pupusa to share. For our first time, we ordered chile verde, camarones aztecas, and a pupusa mixta. All were so flavorful an yummy!!! I couldn't decide what I liked more because everything was delicious. We wanted to try their traditional food under the honduran specialties on their menu the second time. We ordered yuca con chicharron and chuleta sampedrena. We also got another pupusa mixta to share. We only loved the pupusa mixta this time. Unfortunately, the new dishes that we tried this time were disappointing. The chicharron was dry and tough while the yuca was also very dry and sprouty (we had to pick out the roots in each yuca piece because it was not edible). There was not much flavor in the dish. The chuleta sampedrena is a porkchop dish over a bed of plantains and smothered in sauce. The sauce was pretty good and the plantains were good. The porkchop was better than the chicharron but still a bit tough. Our takeout orders spilled both times. Their dishes are pretty saucy so it always spills out of the boxes. I wish they used other packaging materials. We love trying new dishes and cuisines but unfortunately, the honduran specialties in the menu were not good. Now we know what to order next time we come. We will come back for sure, but would only order their more popular dishes. read more

This tiny restaurant packs a nice punch in flavor and quality. The menu had options found in typical Mexican restaurants, and a few interesting dishes that I have not seen elsewhere. I had the super burrito, super taco, and regular taco. The steak and pork was absolutely cooked to perfection. The pork had bits and pieces that were crunchy and gave the super taco a nice crunch and pop of flavor. They have a spicy red and green sauce to go with the tacos, which was cool. The sauces were brought out from the refrigerator immediately after the food arrived. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. The protein ratio is generous. I will most likely return and try the beef soup and other unfamiliar plates. The meal came with complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was somewhat spicy, but tasted fresh. Customer service was attentive. There was also plenty of parking on a weekend. read more

I'm really not understanding the 4 & 5 star reviews. I came in today with pops around noon time and waited about 3 minutes before I even saw anyone. I ordered a super El Pastor burrito , wifey ordered a Chimichanga and pops ordered a super quesadilla. + 2 fountain passion fruit drinks and a Mexican soda. The guy at the counter said to pay when the food was ready "did not give us a total" and it would take 15-20 minutes. What?, their was only one guy a head of us who had already place his order? I've herd of slow service but this takes the cake. Fast forward 20 minutes.... foods ready that will be $62.80, what?!! Talk about sticker shock!! We begrudgingly paid and walked out . Food items as fallows 1. Jarritos soda $3.00 1 super burrito $13.50 2 Maracuya drinks $8.00 1 chimichanga $17.99 1 Quesadillia $14.99 Tax $5.32 After we opened our bags I realized that they gave us 2 meal plates "which I clearly did not order" if he was not sure "he should have asked!!" So far 0 star!! Now for the food, The quesadilla was big and pops liked it, The chimichanga was small and wifey said it was OK. My El Pastor burrito was big but had 0 flavor, the meat was hard and chewy, hands-down the worst El Pastore burrito I've ever had. This has got to be the best Honduran food in America, hands down! I've been to several Honduran restaurants, but none of them even come close to the quality of food at Maya's Cafe. Every dish is packed with authentic flavors that make you feel like you're back in Honduras. The owner is also super nice and welcoming. She's the reason I kept coming back--always greeting me with a smile and making me feel like family. I truly miss this place and can't wait to go back to the Bay Area. I just want to start off saying I was absolutely mindblown by the food here. To begin, every single protein: the seafood in the seafood soup, the spicy shrimp, the porkchop with plantains (Chuleta Sampredrana), had that perfect amount of moisture that made every bite satisfying. (What's even more amazing is that I'm eating the leftovers this morning and the meat still isn't dry after I reheated my food!) Next, every single sauce/flavor was bomb. I don't know what they used. The pork chop had some sort of mustard cream and red cream combo going that I cannot get enough of (and as a cheese hater relieved this dish doesn't have cheese), the spicy sauce for the shrimp was sweet, and the soup with it's coconut base is a reminiscent of Southeast Asian cuisine. Honestly, all of it was total surprise to my tastebuds. Furthermore, their handmade tortillas, both flour and corn, are bomb and actually distinct in flavor and texture (flour reminds me a bit of roti/pita). They are both fantastic and if you get a chance to try both you should. I don't know how to make my point clearer that every one of those dishes was fantastic and the food here will be something I dream about and crave moving forward. Everything was hot and made ready to order Cons: 1. The cabbage was a little on the dry side. 2. The chile relleno was a little bland. 3. They were out of fried plaintains. Service/atmosphere: Great service! Everyone seemed so attentive and kind. The tables were a little dirty. Food: Carne Asada plate ($17.99) was delicious! Portion is huge and it comes with rice and beans. I don't think it's worth this much though imo. Fried chicken (pollo pierna - $12.99) was also pretty good! You have the option to ask for rice and beans or just have salad which is just cabbage. Cheese and bean pupusa ($3.50) basic you can't really mess this up. Just taste like a quesadilla with beans. Maracuya (passion fruit drink $4) this was pretty sweet and somewhat sour. I added water to dilute it to make it less sugary. Tamarindo drink ($3) it look like it tasted good haha my friends finished it. Would I go back? Probably not, I've had better Mexican food in the South Bay for way cheaper prices. Be warned! This place is dangerous!!! Their pupusas are addicting. I work a few doors down and am here almost every day for a cheese pupusa or enchilada plate. The pupusa shells are simply perfectly chewy/crisp and have the most bombastic hot melty cheese nestled inside. I also LOVE the cheese enchilada plate, which is on the pricier side ($20.00) compared to the Mexican joint close to where I live ($11), but the price is so worth it! The seasoned and flavorful rice with refried beans topped with cheese and enchiladas made from fresh corn tortillas smothered in a yummy red sauce ... altogether makes for a filling and fabulous meal that hits all the different flavors and textures I'm looking for in food. This place is a true gem! The food was delicious and this is one of the very few restaurants that offers homemade flour tortillas. I ended up getting the beef with chili sauce plate, normally called chili Colorado but I think it had a different name. Anyways it was delicious! They homemade tortillas were soft and tasty, so good that I had to order some to go and ate them in the car. I will definitely be coming back. The service was great, the waitress was sweet, and checked on us several times to make sure everything was good . Not just any beef though, but super soft (off the bone) kind of beef. It honestly looked like it was being cooked for hours. The entrée came with Spanish rice, salad, tortillas, and of course the beef! Overall looked good tasted good Chicken burrito - S/O's fathers choice. We're use to going to Mexican taqueria's and he says that it just tastes different. "Different but good" he says. Looks like an average burrito so nothing to rave about. Pollo Frito - Yes, you've read that right, fried chicken. You're probably thinking, really? Out of all things on the menu, I chose fried chicken? Why yes, yes I did. It wasn't just any ordinary fried chicken. It was a giant leg that sat on top of plantains and salad. It had a interesting sauce over it. Couldn't tell you what it is though, it was orange, sweet and tangy. Overall a great entrée. Maya's Café was a great introduction to Honduran food. It was different, but different in a good way! Okay, so I was craving some caldo de res, and my husband was craving some platanos fritos. Naturally, yelp to the rescue. This place was packed when we walked in, which is a great sign, right?! Not to mention not all white people (sorry, white people). We were lucky to get a table and ended up ordering! Service: Ridiculously slow. I think we waited approximately 45 minutes for our food. Fortunately, they brought out some chips and salsa, but... My husband ended up getting nachos and we asked the waitress (both in English and Spanish) for it to be only chicken rather than another type of meat. After digging in (once we got the nachos), we both looked at each other and were like...you know how everyone says "that tastes like chicken"wellll not some of the meat we were eating. She ended up apologizing and making another, but it took so long that we had to get it to go in order to make it to an appointment afterwards. Food: Pupusas: I got the loroco pupusa con queso and it was great! We usually go to a pupuseria by our place, but this was pretty good in comparison. A bit on the salty side, I have to say, but tastes good! They only do corn pupusas, not rice. (My preference is rice for flavor!) What I do know is the fried checked is dank AF and the pupusa's were crispy without being greasy. Crazy good. The nicest people ever! We had the beef barbacoa and the Chile verde and a pupusa stuffed with shrimp and cheese. The pupusa was not greasy and it was moist all the way through to the middle. Even if you think you don't like pupusas, try THESE!! The barbacoa was excellent.
