We had unpleasant experience with the food. We ordered through the phone call, didn't get a total until arriving to pick up. The only menu was available for us is the one here, on Yelp, on photos, so we've ordered Fajitas Mixtas, fried chicken and kid's burritos. First of all - everything is much more expensive than on menu photos! Fajitas - $27!! And they forgot to give tortilla. Soon after eating those fajitas my husband turned green, and spent the evening vomiting. The chicken was very bad. Few over fried pieces, which had more of a coating than a meat. One piece was actually a coating only. And kids refused to eat their burrito after few bites. I was surprised because they usually like this stuff. Since it was all our first time here, we decided to do it family style and share. Salsa and chips came out to the table for us as we decided. We ordered baleadas, pupusas, Honduras breakfast steak plate, and beef soup (based on the server's recommendation). I also particularly liked their coffee, nice and smooth. Everything was delicious and freshly made. My favorite was the soup, which was surprisingly familiar, like something my Chinese mom would make. And the baleadas and pupusas did bring me back to Honduras...good job. And the vibe was definitely chill, a casual family restaurant. So, I ended up eating here three times in 4 days because the food is really that spectacular. Also, I had to bring EVERYONE I know to check it out. Maya's Cafe did not disappoint each time. Here is a rundown of everything I ate in the three day span: Honduran Breakfast with Carne Asada, Papusas with Cheese, Cheese and Pork, Cheese and vegetables, Fried Chicken (leg and thigh), Chile Verde, Shrimp cocktail deluxe with crab, fish mussels etc. oh, and about a dozen of their delicious homemade flour tortillas. I've gotta say their pork Papusas and fried chicken may have been my favorites but literally everything was out of this world. It's a small cute little place with good staff and Coffee. No need to ask for a refill as out server came several times to top us off. It's also a basic menu with some interesting additions to cater to the Honduran clientele​. Chips and salsa that are provided was tasty with the exact amount of heat I like. I'd say this restaurant probably has its specialty items that stand out from the rest, but I did not have those so cannot say if their food is tops. My breakfast, however, was decent. They don't season their food much so I had to add my own to enjoy it. Nonetheless I ate half my plate and took the rest home for the next day breakfast. Chilaquiles were pretty good. Nothing to remember, but good. Huevos rancheros were skimpy with eggs and sauteed peppers and onions on top. Again not memorable unfortunately. A stand out was that they serve homemade tortillas with your food. This is rare especially for flour tortillas. Very soft, but not salted even a bit. That is needed to add some balance. The food here is just amazing. It's curl your toes great. Everything is cooked to perfection. I had no idea this place was here otherwise I would have gone sooner! Once I found it, I've been back four times for two lunches and two dinners. The food goes home and reheats well. The tortillas are all hand made and taste so good. Do not go here if you are expecting the standard service at a Mexican restaurant. Everything is made to order which takes time. Get some beer or wine and chill and just enjoy how nice it is. Your patience will be rewarded. The only thing I have issues with is that the service is so inconsistent. Twice I was offered extra salsa in squeeze bottles. Once I was told that they have sour cream if I want it. Sometimes you have to ask for refills. And make sure you check that you get your credit card back. I know it's not intentional. It's just clearly family run and there's no consistency. So that's why I don't mind. The food is great. And it's like a normal family. So I go, get fed great food and enjoy thoroughly. Ok now for my usual review stuff. The bathroom is small but it's clean. The salsa that comes with the chips is spicy. And the chips are great. They're a bit thicker but not THICK and definitely have that great sweet corny taste of masa. Their curtido is not like Salvadoran curtido. It's not spicy. Their puposas are good...I found them a bit greasier than Salvadoran pupusas. Instead, get the baleadas....they are so tasty and perfectly great. I usually get a regular one for an appetizer. The reviews convinced me to give this place a chance. I must say that I understand why this place is highly rated. This restaurant makes the best pupusas I have ever tried. After eating here I probably won't be going anywhere else to eat pupusas. Food has great taste & feels so fresh. They do have a variety of dishes which I'm excited to try. Maya Cafe was located near to a hotel I stayed at while in San Jose. This little authentic restaurant has a nice selection of traditional Mexican fare, with some additional Honduran items as well. I ordered the huevos rancheros, which were very good and very delicious. The flour tortillas were so fresh! I also got a chicken and cheese pupusa which were really to die for. As much as we love Maya's we just ordered an $80 Doordash and they didn't send any cabbage or hot sauce with the pupusas. They also got Chile Verde sauce on all the extra tortillas we ordered. Being that I don't eat pork I can't even enjoy any of the tortillas (ordered extra for the weekend). Very disappointing. Always a hit !! My Honduran family lives in Minnesota, so whenever we are homesick we eat here and I have never been disappointed. I love to try new things on the menu. Absolutely one of the best restaurants I've been to in the area. I can't believe I just barely found this place. Also very authentic. We walked in to Latin music and a good crowd. I had the vegetarian enchiladas with rice and beans and I was pleasantly surprised. It was delicious. The enchiladas are stuffed with carrots, zucchini and potatoes, I got the red sauce on top, and it didn't disappoint. My husband ordered the Chile verde (pork) which came with beans rice and delicious fresh made flour tortillas. And we also ordered one bean and cheese and one pork and cheese pupusa and they were delicious. Even the cortido (pickled cabbage) and the sauce that came with it were delicious. Enveloped in the shabby surroundings of Maplewood Plaza, sits a rare jewel of culinary excellence that should not be missed. Maya's Café (MC) serves up a menu that spans the wide-range of Latin cuisine, but mostly specializing in Honduran and Mexican foods. All of the food here at MC is homemade, fresh and ―more importantly!!― delicious! I have had the pleasure of dining here three times in the past six months, and every meal was a real treat. Sides: Rice & Beans- These come out with just about every plate and are about a solid pairing as I've had. The beans aren't too thick, or watery, and the rice is cooked up fluffy and flavorful. The perfect pairing to almost anything! 4* Tortillas- Both the Flour and Corn Tortillas here at MC are homemade and come out made fresh and hot. I usually go with the Corn, but recently tasted a co-worker's Flour and it was equally delicious. Warm, fluffy bites of heaven in each one! I swear I'd be happy with just a plate full of these and their Rice and Beans. 5* Salsa- Like a lot of legit spots they have bottles of fresh salsa kept refrigerated in the back that you have to ask for; they have a Red, Green and Habanero ones that are all delicious but all pretty damn spicy, if I do say so myself. The Red and Green not as bad, but the Habanero will take you straight to the loo... 3.5* Entrées: Chicken Mole- MC has nice rendition of this Oaxacan classic with a rich, complex sauce and perfectly cooked chicken. Not as good a Mole as my all-time favorite at El Tule (http://goo.gl/CgkgY8), but solid. 4* Pollo Frito (Fried Chicken)- After seeing a coworker order this on our first visit I knew I had to give it a shot! It's a giant slab of chicken, battered and fried up to a golden-brown perfection. The crispy batter and juicy meat were the stars of this dish, but I wished the batter had a bit more flavor to it. They do give you some kind of sauce that the owner claimed had "secret spices," but honestly it just tasted like Honey Mustard and Mayo blend. This dish doesn't come with the rice and beans, but a bed of cabbage and fried plantains. It was good to try once, but I'm not sure I'd get it again. 3.5* Camarones Aztecas (Stuffed Shrimp)- Close your mind's eye and imagine this: Shrimp, cheese and a sliver of grilled Jalapeño encased in a slice of thick, juicy Bacon and deep-fried to crispy, juicy perfection... This was seriously the most ridiculous thing I've eaten in a long, long while! Every bite was a salty, meaty, cheesy bite of pure perfection. I haven't stopped thinking about it since... ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡5*!!!!!! Service & Ambiance- The interior is small and a bit cramped as they try and squeeze in as many seats as possible into this tiny location. The walls are adorned with various Fútbol, sports and Honduran décor/memorabilia. The service is prompt, courteous and friendly; our water glasses were always full and the food was actually served up fairly quickly considering that it's not all pre-made. I was going to be in the area for an event and I knew that I would be hungry after so i searched and found this place on yelp. I was intrigued that it's a honduran restaurant as I never had Honduran food and I decided to check it out. We ordered a plate of what people said the Honduran spaghetti which is a plate full of deep fried plantains, some chopped cabbage smothered with ground beef cooked in tomato sauce. We also ordered honduran menudo....it's just like mexican menudo which is a big bowl of hearty beef tripes soup bit the honduran uses coconut milk in the soup and the soup has some plantains, cabbage and carrots. Last but not least we also shared the honduran chicken tamales. It's very similar to el Salvadorian tamales, it's wrapped in banana leaves n the masa is smoother than the Mexican style. I have to investigate but I had a feeling that the honduran style uses coconut milk as the masa had rich flavor. They gave us a basket of free chips n salsa while we waited for our food to arrive. The salsa was delicious, probably one of the best I have had! The food took a while, probably around 20 minutes after we placed our order but when the food got to our table they were steaming hot, they were also huge in portion and most importantly all were very delicious! !!!! I will certainly come back to try different things! Their seafood soup seemed to be the customers' favorite. I ordered the Honduran breakfast plate (with carne asada) 2 eggs, cheese, beans, steak and AMAZING flour tortillas - she even brought us 2nds of the tortillas. My man got his favorite Chile relleno, which he liked. The chips were better than standard (thin) but needed salt. Nice BIG glasses of ice water. In the reviews people said the steak was tough, mine was not, pretty decent breakfast place, you will leave stuffed. I'm going to round up to three stars here because I wanted to like this place more than I actually did. Looking at the other reviews though, I'm more disappointed by our experience tonight. We tried one of the pupusas ($3.50) - I forget the name, but it was the pork one - freshly prepared, tasty, but very, very greasy. I did like the slaw that came with it (very vinegar-y and no mayo - fabulous!) I had the barbacoa dinner plate ($12.99) and took a photo before diving in. Unlike others have reviewed, my dish did not come with any avocado. The beef was tasty, and the rice and beans were cooked nicely, but overall the dish lacked something - maybe salt? I don't know. The homemade flour tortillas (2) were clearly freshly made and very pillowy (I agree with another reviewer's comparison to naan), but my partner said they were bland. I ate mine with the beef so I didn't notice any blandness. My partner had the chile verde pork dinner ($12.99), which we asked if it was spicy before ordering and were told no, it's not spicy (this was also the dish we were going to share with my preschooler). Sadly, it was very spicy to all three of us. It also came with 2 tortillas (he chose the flour as well), and no avocado either. Service was friendly but after we got our food, non-existent. The server didn't even stop by until we had finished our food. Maybe another tortilla or some more rice would've helped with the heat of that chile verde? I don't know. We were never offered anything. Our food was also very slow to come out - and we noticed that people who ordered much later than us received their food right after us. Weird. This is clearly a family-run place with lots of repeat customers, but didn't quite hit the spot for us on our first visit. After spending a summer in LA, I was sad to be returning to the bay area only because I came to learn that the tacos in Socal are unbeatable. But one of my friends hit me up and told me this place was his spot for tacos. Long story short, I finally found a reliably fire taco place in the bay! The owner here is so nice, he was so grateful to have us eat in his restaurant and made sure to get us anything we needed. And the tacos were amazing. Definitely different from an LA street taco, but the shell on the crispy taco had just the right level of crunch to it, complimented perfectly by probably the most insane cheese pull I've had on a taco. And the meat was so well cooked! Definitely recommend the steak and shrimp tacos. I I found Maya's Cafe through Doordash, I was craving pupusas and it was 1 of 2 results in my area. Maya's is a Honduran restaurant. Mind you, I've only ever had Salvadorean pupusas, but since I didn't have much of a Doordash choice, I went with it and ordered 6! 2 queso con loroco and 4 queso con puerco. Doordash mobile didn't give me the option for additional requests/comments, so I called them up and asked if they could add extra curtido & salsa. A very NICE gentleman on the phone said he would make sure I got extra. In my house, we eat curtido con pupusas (gotta be Salvadorean to get the joke) if your curtido is good, we want more pupusas to go with it. Maya's curtido & salsa was PERFECT!!! I really wanted to try their Yuca con Chicharron, but it wasn't a Doordash option, so we'll be checking their restaurant out this weekend and I am so excited!! This is probably one of the worst chilaquiles that I ever tasted. Mind you, I am from Mexico City, but the salsa that is in this chilaquiles is hot AF. I like spicy food but I also want to be able to enjoy my meal and not be sequestered to a toilet.
