What a sweet little spot! The space was clean, the music was good, the staff were friendly and I love their branding! Cute outdoor seating too. One of our friends got a 'DAM burger' and loved it. Two of us got the 'Mean' - it feels modern with the fresh mint, but can stand with best of the classic deli sandwiches. The salt and pepper potatoes are really good and the portions were very generous. We definitely could've shared the 'Mean', we were full all day, but happy to have leftovers. First time in and first of all, food is effin incredible. Now THAT'S a mean sandwich! But workers there were great. Chatted with them all only to find out one was the owner. Real down to earth bunch. My girl and I couldn't decide if we wanted the bread pudding then we decide screw let's get it. We went to pay only to find out the owner had already covered it. What a cool gesture for no reason. Every time I try a sandwich of theirs, I'm blown away. In particular though, their steak tartare BLT is out of this world & it might just be the best sandwich I've ever had?! Pair your s&p skins with spicy remoulade and you won't be disappointed. Be aware that getting the tartare might mean a bit more of a wait but that's fine with me since it means a freshly prepared tartare. Ambiance and service are still spectacular. read more

This was a fantastic sandwich. Full stop, no notes. It's rare for me to feel that way about vegetarian sandwiches, but not only is this one a unique, not boring option, it's very tasty and filling. The potatoes that came with it were fine too. The service was really good. They were super friendly and helpful when I was asking questions about vegetarian options. They also made it very quickly! Pretty good sandwich but a little slow. Flavor of my sandwich was a bit too salty and acidic for me. I got their signature, "The Mean" sandwich, which is corned beef. It was a nice thick piece of beef with a lot of pickled cabbage and mustard - tasty enough as a combo but the beef in the middle was dry. The edge part was fattier which was way better - tender and melt-in-the-mouth; I just wish the whole sandwich was more marbled. Overall it was extremely vinegar-y, mustard-y, and salty, all of which are very intense flavors, so the taste got a bit overwhelming for me by the end - I took out some of the cabbage to tone it down. The meal includes their potato skin fries, which are great - very peppery and crispy. Service was friendly but a bit slow - I was waiting for 30 or so minutes before we got my sandwich. I will say that the people in my group got other sandwiches, and the vegetarian and vegan at the table were quite impressed with the vegetarian sandwich. read more

This is a very unique family ran business by 3 guys! I totally forgot to record them making the potato wedge fries! They cut them up right in front of you! We got the falafel sandwich with beets in it. The salt and pepper wedges and cream soda with sugar cane. Everything was amazing from the customer service to the food! We came in on a slow weekend afternoon when it wasn't too busy. I've never been into this place before, and the owner (I think?) did a great job of explaining all of the items on the menu and then some. The place is somewhat small, but lots of seating options - booth, table, bar-top. We did not wait very long for our food. I'm not sure, but I think whether you order to go or just sit down in the restaurant space doesn't change how the food is served - basically in to-go wrappings. The potato skins (just Salt and Peppa for me) alone make it worth coming back to Mean Sandwich. Probably very close to the best crispy potatoes I've ever had in my life. They are VERY crispy and well seasoned, which is exactly how I like them. I had the single D.A.M. Burger and it was good but didn't wow me - I asked to sub American for Cheddar cheese but I still got American - which I despise - so I scraped it off. My husband had the steak tartare club and enjoyed it. He also had the Buffalo style skins - not my preference, but he enjoyed those as well. I will return for the skins! I'll also have to try a different type of sandwich or DAM again but with cheddar...and then maybe I can update this post. read more

Mean sandwich, but incredibly nice folks. I had the mean sandwich. The pastrami or corned beef was thick cut, melt in your mouth, but with some nice crispy outside. I'm not a good reader, so I was pleasantly surprised by the mint leaves, which was a nice bright balance against the succulent meat, as was the sauerkraut/pickled cabbage. Loved the potato's they serve in the side, like crispy potato skins moreso than potato wedges, and several dipping sauce choices. The lemon mayo was good, but I dipped more into the plain old ketchup. read more

It took awhile for our order to get ready (I overheard that it was mixed up with the previous table) but otherwise the diner had an old timey vibe with cute car with flags as the table number placeholder. It's a casual place to grab a bite with nice courtyard seating and their servers are friendly without being intrusive. We went out of our way to go here and I'll give it a shout and say that the salt-n-pepa potatoes were pretty good! I ordered the midnight at the oasis and was pleasantly surprised that the falafel came out as a full patty since usually falafel is just smushed in between the buns for these dishes. The harissa beets also paired well with the persian pickles. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to come here in the future if I were to return to Ballard though for the sandwich, but that could be a bit colored because I'm vegetarian and don't see the need to explore more of the menu beyond. read more

The customer service here was absolutely fantastic! Gave us great guidance on the menu and recommended some of his own personal favorite ways to enjoy the choices we made. Bathroom was clean and fully stocked with tp and paper towel. We ordered a Jersey sub to share and some extra sauces for our skins, spicy remoulade and white sauce. I just had a fantastic experience having lunch today at Mean Sandwich. Our company had Installation Training over at The Pioneer Collective in Ballard and we're looking for a place to eat. The Reviews looks promising so the eight of us headed over. There was some construction under the Ballard Bridge that was causing congestion and parking took a little time.....which should not be an issue once the road work is completed. We met Dan Crookston, the owner, who takes your order. Appreciated the vibe as he took our orders. We mixed it up with several different sandwiches. I went with the Hama Hama Oyster Po'Boy. It was perfect. Had the Perfect Spud and they're right..."you're a fool if you don't get these". And we were served promptly. Take a look at the Map on the Floor and take the time to enjoy this place when you get a chance. The Mean, The D.A.M and the Jersey Sub looked amazing too and everyone enjoyed, and some even had enough for leftovers. Observed a customer come in when Dan was on the phone taking an order and left in a huff. That guy flat out missed out! Dan's personal service was refreshing. I'm from Portland, and I promise you....when I'm back in town I'm going over to Ballard to have another sandwich at Mean Sandwich.
