Located a small strip mall. Very hard to get in, out and around. Parking: Packed! Maybe not bad during the weekend. But on the weekend, it was horrible. NO indoor seating. There are outdoor seatings but not too many. Just be prepared to buy everything to go. It's Indonesian grocery + packaged food market. The most (best) packaged food is there only on Thursdays - Sundays. All food and snacks are just amazing. So worth the price! Service was excellent! The lady took my full hand carry basket to the back and gave me an empty basket so I can continue my shopping. Great service, but it also meant it made me spend more Cashier was super polite and appreciative!Whenever I went groceries, majority of the cashiers that I met were just there for the paycheck. No passion, no kindness, toss my groceries to the side. But here, they treated me like a human being and nicely pack all of my items so they won't spill/break apart. When he saw my 7 yo with me, he asked her to go and pick a small toy/treat from his basket. Small detail but big deal for a mom like me. Overall, the best! I will come back again and again! A little far for me, but I'm happy to have come here. If you're Indo, and haven't had Indo foods, snacks, and candy in a while, this place is DANGEROUS! I couldn't stop grabbing sauce packets, snacks, snacks, snacks, and even more snacks... It's broken up into three areas, coming in the front entrance in the middle, there is a plethora of Indonesian meals. Enough to get your mouth watering. To the right is a separate room filled with snacks, teas, sauces, dried chips ready to be deep fried. When you walk across to visit the last room, this room seems to house more items in bulk, along with some other snacks. Service was great, even though I was referred to as older brother in Indo, but I let that slide knowing my basket of goodies were about to be annihilated! Happy to see my fellow Indo peeps, walking around, shopping, cutting in front of you without any regard to personal space. Medan Kitchen is now my absolute favorite Indonesian place in So-Cal after just two visits. I grew up in Indonesia and have traveled to a few parts of the country, including Medan. I always felt the need to go back for that authentic taste since the Indonesian food here sometimes taste slightly different. Fortunately Medan Kitchen is here now to save the day. Medan Kitchen is not a restaurant in the conventional sense where you would order from a menu, and your food comes out in a few minutes. It's a grocery store with a selection of ready-to-eat items already pre-packaged, like the pre-made sushi boxes and fried chicken at American grocery stores. You can buy groceries like snacks, instant noodles, pre-made seasonings, and cooking ingredients such as Indonesian coconut cream, while getting ready-to-eat items like nasi padang, tahu gejrot, es cendol, etc. I fell in love with Medan Kitchen from my first visit because it carried Indomie (Indonesian instant noodles) varieties that I could not find elsewhere, such as mie keriting (curly noodles) and the regional flavors, i.e. soto Medan, empal gentong, mie kocok Bandung, ayam pop, etc. They are way more expensive than the regular Indomie at other grocery stores (~$3.00-3.50 vs. $0.50). However, flying back to Indonesia to get these is way more expensive, so I buy them here anyway. The only Indomie type I love that I don't see here is Indomie jumbo. Besides the Indomie selection, the best part about Medan Kitchen is the wide variety of ready-to-eat items. It offers 30-40+ pre-packaged food in a single day, and it's not the same selection every day. I would recommend checking Instagram (@medankitcheninc) to see what's available for the day you're thinking of going, or to help you decide which day to go. It's also better to arrive earlier than later as some items may sell out. I enjoy almost everything I've gotten from here, but my favorites so far are rujak buah, tahu gejrot, gulai nangka, nasi rames Medan with rendang, nasi ulam, es campur Medan, nasi kapau, and martabak manis. I would not recommend the carabikang, and I would skip liang teh, mie tek-tek, caramelized banana spring roll, and otak-otak (it was not easy to peel the leaves) next time. While there's no seating inside due to the grocery store format, there are tables and benches outside if you want to enjoy your food right away. There are a microwave, water dispenser, disposable cups and utensils towards the bulk grocery area on the left side. first time there while i was in los angeles. everybody is talking about this place and that is why, i came to visit. for buying indonesian chili sauce and others, i am quite impressed that they have lots of things. for foods: 1. bubur madura: just ok 2. nasi padang komplit: as far as i know the chili never mixed with stinky beans. the chicken and rendang are tough to eat. love it if you can make it more tender 3. bakso goreng kopong: not sure the 'kopong' is because for me, it is not 'kopong' 4. tahu berontak: too oily for me overall, foods are just ok for my taste buds. staffs are nice and helpful. place is quite big and if you want to dine in, they provide tables and seats outside. the utensils and water are provided too. service is basically great. the three stars is for the food quality that i have eaten there. pictures were not taken at that time ~ too hungry already. when you spend $100, they will give you a bag and it is a good quality bag... read more

Medan Kitchen is my favorite place to get Indonesian food! It's a small market where you can buy snacks and ingredients, but also pick up delicious freshly cooked homestyle Indonesian food that is already prepackaged in to-go takeout containers. You pick what you want and then pay at the registers. They have utensils, napkins, and a microwave available if you want to heat up the food and eat at the tables outside. Pro Tip (if you didn't know already): You can check their Instagram page @medankitcheninc beforehand to see what they will be selling that day. Whether they have it or not depends on how early you get there (some things sell out), but they usually replenish/refill most things throughout the day. My favorite thing to get is the Nasi Uduk Complit (Indonesian Coconut Steamed Rice Set) because you get a variety of dishes (spicy boiled egg, beef rendang, chili sambal, fried chicken, tempeh with peppers, fried potatoes peanuts and anchovies) and delicious coconut rice. It's big enough to share between two people and still fill both of you up. We also got the coconut rice with fried tilapia, fried bananas, fried tempeh, and steamed cassava cake with coconut yesterday for lunch. The tilapia was fried perfectly, and the fried shallots on the coconut rice were delicious. The fried tempeh had a yummy dark sweet soy dipping sauce (it will prob taste even better reheated at home in an air fryer or toaster oven), and the fried bananas were amazingly sweet. I happened to be running errands nearby and saw a big crowd gathering in front of Medan Kitchen in a small shopping plaza. I'm naturally curious and wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I thought it was a grand opening of some sort. Super crowded around 2 pm for a Saturday afternoon. This must be the official gathering spot for Indonesians in SGV!! There's a big crowd of people outside and inside of this place. I do not know anything about Indonesian food, but I was determined to NOT leave empty-handed. There were a bunch of prepared food on the table. People were buying everything up. I asked around to see what good eats to pick up. Ended up with 4 items! I decided on Nasi Krawu, which is a banana leaf-wrapped rice dish with sweet fried shredded beef, spicy eggs, cucumber, chili, peanuts and other crunchy yummy stuff ($15). Very tasty rice dish. YUM!! Picked up roasted tofu that comes with a dipping sauce. Very small portion of about 6 pieces of tofu for $8. Will definitely skip that for next time. I also bought a pack of tapioca crackers and roasted fish crackers based on a very helpful lady's recommendation. Turns out this place has been around for about five years but it's well known within the Indonesian community in San Gabriel Valley. It was fun picking up and trying random new food. read more

Cool concept but pricing is a bit ridiculous. I think they stock items from local Indonesian businesses / ghost kitchens and whatnot so not everything is made by them. I'd love to try everything but that doesn't seem feasible. Prices range from $14-$20 for a meal. There are two registers so it's a bit confusing... staff don't seem to really even know what's going on? or what their products are??? No one really explained what the differences in the lines are. I usually hate leaving less than 5 star reviews on businesses that seem to be family owned / small businesses but Seems like this place is popular enough to take it. This place is hyped up, basically just lunchboxes of various dishes that you could just grab and go. Was super packed on a saturday around noon. I got a chicken three ways dish. Sausage, char siu bbq style chicken, and a stewed drumstick, an egg... came with a few sauces... a hot sauce and a brown sauce and a soup. It was a single drumstick... tiny af. smallest drumstick i've ever seen in my life lol. Everything tasted ok... protein that you get is pretty minimal... Soup was extremely salty. Hot sauce is extremely hot. I also got a chicken satay skewers dish. I think 6 or 5 skewers, a peanut satay sauce, and some rice cakes? the cashier didn't even know what it was. Does this place deserve 5 stars? Based on my experience here I think it comes pretty close. I haven't had a lot of Indonesian food to compare but I've had things similar I believe at the more popular restaurants in SGV. I've been following their IG page for awhile. They close pretty earlier on the weekdays so I don't always have a chance to stop by. But Luckily I got off work early and was able to swing by. The food was amazing, price was pretty fair for what you get. Its a grab and go kinda place they have a market as well. I ordered the Nasi Padang Ayam Pop / Nasi Uduk Betawi - both of these were rice with different toppings wrapped in a Banana leaf. The flavors and textures were on point. I'll post a photo of what it came with. Both rice dishes 5/5 would get it again . Also had this dessert called Sagu Rangi - it was like a grainy tapioca soup with sweet potato and coconut milk 3/5 I wont get it again. Overall this place is a hidden gem - there is so much different foods to try, its pretty clean, you walk im they have cook foods prepackaged and there's a market inside that sells Indonesian product . My friend catered Medan Kitchen for his birthday and it was so so good! The turmeric rice always hits the spot, and the tofu tempeh with green chili is a must have! Honestly I don't think you can go wrong with whatever you order here! Everything is always great - plenty of options for whatever you diet is, and the prices are fair! Also, side note, their chili sauce is so good and I can eat it on rice alone! They have a couple of tables outside for you to eat but it doesn't work as a "traditional" restaurant where you order and they bring things out for you. I feel like I went to Vegas and hit the Indonesian Food Jackpot after finding this place. I came here on a rainy early afternoon and wasn't expecting much, but I was blown away by the variety of dishes available. There were dishes here I hadn't thought about since my early childhood when I spent time with my Indo grandmother who so lovingly prepared many of the dishes I am now experiencing once again after so many decades. Nasi Gudig, rawon, ikan pepisan, sayur, cendol, lemper, resoles, in addition to dozens of types of krupuk and other goodies are to be found here. The dishes are all prepared in advance and stacked in trays & frequently wrapped in banana leaves waiting to be chosen. They have additional groceries, snacks and hard to find spices. I went away with a week's worth of dishes for my son and myself and we have been enjoying them every day. Prices are reasonable and the food is fresh & tasty. My first time (?) having Indonesian food and WOW was this good. While not what I was expecting, this grab-and-go spot with microwave (and limited outdoor seating) was a pleasant surprise. We originally popped in and I thought "maybe I should try somewhere else", I sucked it up and picked out a few items. To start, parking is awful. I mean AWFUL. The plaza to the east is maybe a contributing factor, but we accidentally entered the other parking lot and it felt like a black hole - we almost gave up and went home. Exited the wrong parking lot and missed the turn for the correct parking lot, made a u-turn and found a coveted street parking spot (and j-walked over). Everything has descriptions but a bit hard to decipher. I opted to use google-translate to help a bit when I wasn't sure what I was getting into. After picking a few items, guy at the register was kind and helpful. I told him I was dining-in and he told me which ones to microwave. Ended up with the Nasi Liwet with chicken, a tilapia wrapped in banana leaf, and veggie fritters. Wrapped it up with a banana dessert and Medan tea. The Nasi Liwet was my highlight as it came with some delicious tofu/green bean combo, potatoes, egg, and rice. Chicken meat was the tiniest bit dry but also fall-off-the-bone tender. Tilapia was incredible as well but a bit spicier than I was prepared for. Had a few bites and let my partner finish it off. The veggie fritters would probably have been incredible if fresh out of the fryer but were still delicious cold. I wish I took it home to pop in the air fryer but enjoyed it nonetheless. The banana desert was my least favorite as the breading missed the mark in my books. Medan Kitchen is a hidden gem tucked away inside the same plaza as Tip Top's Sandwiches on Valley (it actually behind it). Medan Kitchen recently was featured on Eater LA (although Medan Kitchen was featured before in 2020), with a video you can watch to learn more about the owner and her market (https://www.eater.com/23033819/77-year-old-indonesian-chef-started-medan-kitchen-los-angeles). This market was open by Siu Chen back in 2020 when she was 75 years old, that sells snacks, food items, ingredients, etc from her home in Jakarta, Indonesia. But the real gem is the large variety of premade dishes, meals, desserts and snacks that you can choose from and purchase. This is where the fun begins to browse around the tables and grab what you want to purchase. It has been known that popular items sell out so it is highly recommended you come early. I came here on a Sunday afternoon, around 11:50 am with my husband and it was definitely busy. But don't worry, there was a lot of food items to choose from. We ended up purchasing: Nasi Padang, $14- This rice dish is wrapped in banana leaves and inside was rice, curry chicken, beef rendang (kind of a like a beef curry or stew), spicy boiled egg, green chili with stinky beans, cabbage, long beans. Although it may be pricey at $14, the portion is large and can easily feed 2 people. The chicken and beef are tender and very flavorful. But the beef is a bit too spicy for me. My husband ate most of this over 2 meals and liked it. Busa, $6. Cake Pudding- Comes with 3 pieces. This was not as sweet as I thought it would be. The texture of the pudding is firm, like jello. This was just okay for me and would pass on this next time. Nasi Kuning Komplit, $14. Indonesian Turmeric Rice Set- This rice dish almost had the same things that was in the nasi padang. It had tumeric rice (instead of steamed white rice in the nasi padang), beef rendang, spicy boiled egg, sambal belacan (Malaysian chili sauce), fried chicken, tofu tempeh with green chili, spicy potato and fried anchovy and peanuts. Another entree that can feed 2 people. I liked the chicken and rice (as it wasn't spicy). I had a bite of the beef, which was tender but too spicy for me to have anymore. My husband enjoyed the rest for another meal, which he did like as well. Soto Mie, $13. Indonesian Noodle Soup- This entree came with soup (with pieces of beef) that was placed in a bag to heat up at home, a large side of noodles, chopped carrots and tomatoes, a slice of lime for that added flavor and an egg roll filled with glass noodles. The egg roll was soggy, which I probably should have reheated in the microwave. I reheated the soup in a pot on the stove and then added the rest of the items. This dish was a large portion for me and could have easily been two meals (but I ate it all, lol, but was really full afterwards). The soup wasn't spicy (thank goodness for me because my tolerance level for spicy foods is very low, lol) but flavorful. I found the beef to be tender and flavorful. Loved both the noodles in this dish. ----------------------- (Total= $47) This place takes credit card (without any hidden transactions fees either). Although may appear to be expensive, the food we purchased was good for 6 meals, which is a steal. If you wish to eat your meals here, there is outdoor (covered) seating. There is a microwave that you can heat your meals and plastic utensils and napkins available. We just took all of our food items to go but there were plenty of people eating outside. Wow! I had no idea this place existed. I went for a friend's bday and I could have easily spent my entire paycheck here. I tried a mixed platter that had a chicken thigh, beef rendang, and egg in sambal, chili paste and tempeh stir fried with tofu. I have tried cooking tempeh so many ways and it's never come out moderately palatable. Mixing the tempeh with tofu and green chili was a wonderful flavor combination. I lost my ability to talk because the food was soo good I was savoring all the flavors. I also tried a sticky rice chicken roll wrapped in a banana leaf (I am sorry I forgot the name) and I had a durian shake and this dessert called martabak manis. It was heavenly. I'm a firm proponent that anything you dine out you can cook at home. However this is absolutely an exception. It would take me years to perfect the recipes. I will come back to try everything. The market is very busy but despite that the customer service was great. The place was so packed I didn't even have a chance to fully explore the market. The ambiance is lively. Indonesian food is now my favorite cuisine. read more

This review is only for the food: as an Indonesian living here, I was quite impressed and also taken back to my days of living in Indo when I had their Nasi Padang - I loved the amount of chili they put without making the entire thing overwhelmingly too spicy, and the curry sauce (gulai) they put onto the rice really added so much flavor to the rice. The meat (beef) was delicious, plus the hard boiled egg and some young jackfruit and long beans. Super duper delicious. I would 100% get it again. We also get kue lopis (some sticky rice dessert in triangular shape and covered with shredded coconuts, served with sweet palm sugar sauce), and that was super legit. We also got Putu Mayang which was decent. Two thumbs up overall. read more

I ABSOLUTELY love this quaint Indonesian grocery/prepared food market. If you look on their website you can read about the lady who started as a caterer and opened up her shop during the pandemic. Now that's ballsy! She absolutely loves cooking for her family, friends, and community! This is my FAVORITE Indonesian homemade joint because it reminds me of my mother's and grandma's cooking. You know how in the movie, Ratatouille, where the critic is transported back to his childhood thru his food experience...that happened to me here!!!! If a place can elicit those happy and positive memories of your childhood it's definitely doing something right in my book! You must get the: *Nasi Kunung Komplit (Indo Tumeric Rice Set) A++ *Nasi Bungkus (Fried Chicken wrapped in Banana Leaf) I get it with Tumeric Rice A++ *Klepon (Indo Sweet Glutinus Rice Balls) A++ *Lupis (Indo Sweet Sticky Rice Dumplings) A+ *Bakso Campur (Mixed Meatball Soup) A+ *Rujak Buah Medan (Mixed Fruit Salad) A+ The dipping sauce is spicy and addicting! *Stinky Green Bean Chili A+++ (my fav chili of ALL time) only place where I can get this particular chili. It's not cheap but it's good on everything!!! *Mini filled pineapple cakes A++ - These are labor intensive and must be eaten quickly when fresh but they are some of the most decadent and rich dessert you will have had in awhile! My cousin makes these and I know how complicated it can be to get the right texture without it being dry and flaking apart I don't know what to tell you but I think I tried practically everything here and there is nothing that I don't like. Bottom line is if you grew up on this type of food or a fan of Indo food, this is the one place you CANNOT miss!
