I'm a fan of Ipoh Kopitiam, so when I found out they opened another location at The Shops at Santa Anita, I was eager to try it. I stopped by last week hoping to order the laksa, but once I arrived, I realized they don't offer it at this location due to mall limitations. I was a little disappointed and decided to eat somewhere else instead. Yesterday, I came back with friends to introduce them to Malaysian food. We all ordered the nasi lemak with curry chicken, a classic traditional dish that is always satisfying. Everyone enjoyed the meal, and we'll definitely be back again in the future. read more

found this place while browsing in the Arcadia mall's food court, was completely unaware of their other location. Decided to try their signature dish, hainan chicken rice. It is probably as authentic as it gets, at least in the local area. They do marinade their chicken well, I do taste the sesame oil in the mix. The meat was juicy. I also did try their roast chicken rice. To me it had the smoked / smoky chicken taste that many chinese restaurants offer, at least in the marinade. The service was good. So far have tried 2 times by ordering online for pick up. They send a text letting me know it was ready and when I showed up, the food was carefully packed. All sauces were included, without needing to ask. As mentioned it is casually located in the food court at the Arcadia mall. Due to the influx of housing programs, the demographic of this immediate area has changed. The mall now feels more crowded even on a weekday. And I say this not because of the race but because how people behave. The Arcadia mall now feels ghetto. People drive like maniacs in the park lots and purposely make loud noises, smash and grab ....etc.... I would not come here during the weekends, nor the holidays, unless you feel like looking for parking spots and seeing huge crowds. This would be a good place to pick up a quick weekday dinner IMO. I finally got to try this hyped spot on a Saturday without a crazy line. It's got a cute small stall area for a mall court food spot. I liked the milo decor & it made me get the drink There's not much service involved since it's mostly kiosk for self order. Only time there's interaction is picking up your food. I wish I asked for more napkins from the get go. The curry with the fresh naan tastes absolutely heavenly. The Hainan chicken was not bad, probably a 7.5/10 for me since there's many Hainan chicken spots around this area. The drink is a bit expensive for what it is, but cute! read more

This is their second location in LA. This venue is at the Shops in Santa Anita's food court. The food is pretty much the same as their main restaurant in Alhambra but with a smaller menu. We got the Hainan chicken rice and it was delicious. The portion could have been a little bigger. We also got the spicy beef rendang with roti. The roti was buttery, flaky and divine. So was the rendang sauce and the beef was very tender. This is also a small dish, portion wise. I got the Malaysian coffee and that was the only negative. It was awful. Not sure about the mixed ratings here on the Arcadia food court Ipoh. First off, it's awesome we can get Hainan Chicken at a mall in LA now haha. Second it was juicy, moist and good flavor- as good as the original location. Thirdly, my order came out fairly fast- we just had to get to the initial soft opening hurdles and boom- fast food people. Fourth- you can get it for around $15 bucks, that's so reasonable in this economy! We got the charsiu rice too and it was good. Lastly, my only other thought is I wish I had more chicken. read more

This Malaysia eatery inside the Santa Anita mall has to be one of the best places to eat at the mall. I'll drive 30 miles again for this experience! This mall has to be the most well-kept malls in Los Angeles county and also has the best options for food around it and inside of it. At Ipoh Kopitiam I ordered their famous Hinanese Chicken Rice, their Pineapple Bun for dessert, and a Malaysian Milk Tea with a bit of sugar to walk around with while I was shopping. The gentleman who helped me at the register was warm and smiled frequently. I enjoyed my interaction with him while he was explaining the menu. I'll be back with the rest of my family in two weeks. I've dined at the sit-down location in Alhambra before, and since this one is in a food court, you won't get quite the same experience. I ordered the Hainan chicken rice. The flavor was good, but the rice-to-chicken ratio was way off. I literally still had a bowl full of rice left after finishing all the chicken. The roti pancake was also very small, which felt a bit disappointing. I saved the kaya toast for breakfast the next day and it was just okay. Several items on the menu were also unavailable during our visit. Tried the Hainan chicken rice here and... it was just ok. The chicken was tender enough, but I really wish they used more dark meat or at least offered the option. What I got leaned pretty heavy on the lighter cuts, which made the whole dish feel a little flat. For $18 and "takeout" only, the presentation wasn't great. If you're takeout-only, the box is literally the first impression, so it should look a bit more put together. Instead, it felt like everything was dropped in quickly and hoped for the best. And the sauces... opening those little oily containers and trying to pour them over the chicken felt like something you wouldn't want to pay much for. Either dress the dish for me or give me an easier way to dip it...? My hands were way too oily by the end. Other places do the same dish for around $15 with better portions and presentation, so this was hard to justify. Service was also rough. It's a self-kiosk setup, which is totally fine, but when our order was ready, getting staff attention took forever. They called out my order, but I stood there for almost ten minutes trying to get someone to actually hand it to me. Came here out of sheer curiousity on my food court tour. Brand new spot inside of the Arcadia mall. It's Malaysian cuisine from a particular region that has influences of Cantonese and Indian. So the menu will have some familiarity if you've eaten from both. Ordering is through touch screen kiosks. Got the beef rendang that came with rice, and one soda. Total was around 18 bucks, which isn't too bad for what you're getting. I was expecting to get my meal on a plate and a soda with ice (when I ordered it on the kiosk, there were adjustments for amount ice), but the food came in plastic take-home containers. And the soda in a can. Lol. Really strange. If you're at a food court, there's a reasonable expectation that you will be eating in said court. But they didn't provide any plates or bowls. Ending up eating the stuff at home. As for the food, it was just OK. The beef was somewhat tender and had a plenty of heat. Portions were enough for two as well. So it was probably worth the price. Keep in mind, though, that everything here is most likely pre-made and they just heat and box up your order to go. It has to be as nobody has time to wait 20 minutes at a food court with dishes like these that certainly take time to make. At any rate, I did see roti on the menu. Who doesn't like roti? Still though, I just can't get past whether or not this is a takeout spot or an actual food court restaurant. Probably won't be back until they solve their identity crisis. read more

They have kiosk screens to self order which is convenient. We waited around 20-30 minutes for our food because they ran out of steamed rice and asked if we could replace with the chicken rice. The dishes were all packed in to-go containers even though we were eating in the food court. The food portions were on the smaller side and they tasted just okay. Nothing special. We came for dinner on a Wednesday night and they were still pretty busy. There are two kiosks to order from. Located in a food court, so it can be loud in the background and there's plenty of seating. Wait time was about 30 min. They ran out of steamed rice so we got chicken rice to replace them all. They package the food all in takeout containers with no napkin dispensers at the counter. You can ask for water though. We tried 4 dishes on their menu and they were all average. I never able to try it in their main store in Alhambra. So I was very excited to hear this new store opened in the Arcadia mall food court. I am well aware of the limited menu and the food court situation. So I was not expected any service etc. So, just review the food. The food that we ordered is really greatly below mid. We ordered the famous Hainan chicken rice and also the toast and the Malaysia cha Siu rice. The deboned hainan chicken doesn't look like the freshest that we can see. And we found couple pieces of small bones while eating it. A big no no for any deboned meat. It could just crush the teeth. And the cha Siu rice with egg is simply terrible!! The meat is all fatty and overly sweet. I count it. I can't find one piece of meat that contain more than 1/2 lean meat!! While fatty cha Siu is a treat, but not THAT FATTY. The dark soy sauce is overly sweet and the egg is just not appealing. And the toast that we got.... With that like jam inside and charged $4.5.... Well, definitely not going back. I've been to the Ipoh Kopitiam in Alhambra and wanted to try this one at the Santa Anita Mall. I tried their Nasi lemak with curry chicken and it was very solid. The chicken was soft and the curry sauce was rich but not overpowering and complemented the rice well. The eggs were soft, and it came with perfectly roasted peanuts, complimenting the dish as well. There were some cucumber slices, and I do wish there were more veggies to go with it since it's more hearty. I also wish I added the sambal option. Because it is more of a quick grab and go spot at the mall, I think the quality is different from the Alhambra sit down location. It's very solid but their Alhambra location definitely has more options, food feels more fresh and hot, and has more flavor. Finally, I had the chance to try this location and avoid the opening crowd. This Ipoh location is inside the mall's food court. So, it is not too hard to find parking. However, it may be hard to find a place to sit during busy hours. Now, to the restaurant itself. It uses a grill to make the kaya toast, which I found is interesting. This location doesn't have any noodles dishes. It only has rice dishes, drinks, and dessert. The employees were trying their best but it took a long time to get your order. I waited around 36 minutes for a simple Hainan chicken rice dish which it took around ten minutes at its Alhambra location. So, if you are in a hurry, you may want to come the other time. Total time from kiosk order to getting food was 42 minutes; I expect this wait time to drop down as they figure stuff out Ordered the nasi lemak with curry chicken, curry chicken with rice, and roti with chicken curry. Originally wanted the Malaysian roast chicken but not being available, went with the curry chicken instead A bit crowded up front as people waited to hear their order number called. If I were management, I would consider adding a small LED screen to post order numbers that were available so the poor employee up front won't lose her voice calling out numbers above the din of the food court Orders just involving toast would probably be much faster than the main dishes. I got the nasi lemak and beef rendang. My drink was the Malaysian milk tea. It was iced so I had to pay $.45 more. It tasted similar to milk tea boba. The nasi lemak consisted of hard boiled egg cut into slices, cucumber, peanuts, basmati rice and spicy squid which is Malaysian. The beef rendang was tender and easy to cut and it's Indonesian. I haven't tried Malaysian or Indonesian food and I was interested in Indonesian food. Service was almost non-existent because we ordered on the kiosk. The employee gave me the food when it was ready, I had to say my name. It took 5 minutes for the order to be completed. We ate in the mall, there was a table that seated up to 10 or so people. Conclusion: if you want to appreciate this fine restaurant, go to their Alhambra mother ship. Ipoh Kopitiam has always been an epic eatery for me. So even after reading all the reviews I still come here with high expectations. I ordered curry chicken with rice, roti and fish balls to go. I tried the curry chicken. The portion is huge, comes with four large pieces of chicken, taste is very rich and meat is not overcooked but could be a bit more tender. The curry source is on the spicy side and very very greasy. Rice is slightly on the dry side perfect to go with the curry source. I ate two pieces of chicken, dark meat with skin and bone and almost finish the rice. As a stall in a mall food court, I think the portion is too big. One person may be able to finish but won't have room for others and that greasy source may bother you later. Overall, I understand the limitation operating in a mall limits the menu. Therefore I question the location. It would be much satisfying to enjoy their egg tart, fried noodle in a proper restaurant instead. I can tell the owner paid attention to details and the service is ok, but I couldn't recommend this place to you for the following reasons. 1. The environment lacks the south asian cafe feel. 2. The limited menu restricted customers experience. 3. The food is too greasy and too big in a mall food court (saw one reviewer claimed had discomfort after eating their food). Their menu is extensive and everything looks appetizing. I settled on the Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry and Malaysian black coffee since I've never had those before. Despite being busy, the wait was not long. The portion size was also proportionate to the price. The dish itself was so flavorful, from the rice itself to the chicken even to the peanuts. I love their roti canai!! I really enjoy their chicken curry too. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the pricing is quite high! I spent $17 on what you see in the picture (minus the curry dipping sauce for the extra roti canai). Nevertheless, the food is so good I am willing to splurge! Service is fine, no complaints.
