I first started going here with co-workers years ago since it was pretty close to the office. I wasn't really a big fan of Greek food, but Med Caf turned things around and opened my eyes to basic Greek food. A falafel here, a gyro there, every lunch I had here was good. My best experience was when my Mom came down to visit and wanted to grab a quick bite. I suggested Mediterranean Cafe and she nearly fell to the floor in shock that I eat Greek food. We visited this place based on the ratings and descriptions here on Yelp and weren't disappointed. What you get for the price is just incredible, in both quality and quantity. All the prices were good, but like a lot of people, we got the $19.95 special for two. Two is a little pessimistic, this meal could easily be split three ways, if not four. You'll likely be taking home quite a bit, and if it's as good the second time around as it was the first, you won't be sorry. The meal starts with a Greek salad with warm pita and tzatziki. The salad is monumental. Greek olives, shredded carrots, feta, tomatoes, and cucumbers on romaine. Dressing (olive oil and red wine vinegar) is on the table. The produce was incredibly fresh, not a hint of wilting. Every salad should be this fresh. It'll keep you plenty busy while you're waiting for the main course. If you think the salad is impressive, wait until you see this. It's served on a platter the size of a side table. On it are a chicken kabob with zucchini, a beef kabob with bell peppers and onions, a huge pile of sliced roast lamb, two full loaves of warm pita, a generous serving of both hummus and tabbouleh, a heaping pile of crumbled feta, two large felafel balls, two dolma, two cups of tzatziki, and the meats are on a bed of rice pilaf. The dolma was a little softer than I'm used to, but tangy and delicious. The hummus was creamy but needed a little seasoning. I make good hummus so I'm quite picky about it. A little olive oil and salt made it perfect. Everything else was pure perfection. The chicken was tender white meat, grilled perfectly. The beef kabob was, in fact, steak, cooked a tender medium. The lamb was literally the best I've ever had. It was so tender I could cut it with my fork. The extra-crispy felafel reminded me of hushpuppies. I found everything else to also be very tasty (which was kind of a relief as the last Greek place I reviewed on Yelp, Kojack's in Mission Beach, managed to serve the sorriest excuse for rice pilaf I've ever put in my mouth). The one thing I got that I wouldn't get again was my drink. I got iced tea and found it rather weak. It's the only thing other than water that you can get refills on, though, because they don't have a fountain. We finished off our meal each with a piece of baklava. They serve your choice of walnut or the more exotic pistachio. I jumped at the chance to have pistachio. We traded bites and they were both wonderful, but I love, love, love having the option as pistachios are my favorite nut. The atmosphere was nice for a small, inexpensive place. Warm and inviting, but very casual. Uptempo Greek music plays quietly from a stereo. The restroom is neat and clean. Our server was helpful and friendly. I don't yelp overall, but being that I had the most delicious pasta this weekend I had. I'm a pasta guy. Saturday night was the wife and mines anniversary, we both wanted pasta but she knew how picky I am. In the end we agreed to go get Greek here, the lovely waitress then said how there was a new thing they were having PASTA. I was so happy, I mean we could've gone to Olive Garden, but things happen for a reason haha it was meant to be. I ordered the fettuccini Alfredo and let me tell you it was delicious! My wife had a spanakopita plate and she enjoyed it, so perfectly made. No complains, the next day I wanted more pasta it was a lunch craving so I called up my wife and asked her to get pasta to go from here, she told me the waitress was mentioning how there was another pasta they had, spaghetti and meatballs, of course I wanted to try it and not your ordinary spaghetti and meatballs the sauce was different it was really delicious, we already loved this place but now we love it more kudos to the owner! read more

This is really fast, really inexpensive Mediterranean food. But it ain't cheap fast food. You go up to the front, order, pay and sit down like any "fast food" restaurant. My food literally arrived at the table in under 4 minutes. The food is solid and the prices are *very* reasonable - bordering on a steal. Especially when you consider the portion size. I ordered the veggie delight plate which came with hummus, tabbouli, rice, dolmas, a greek salad (omit the feta if you're vegan), falafel, and a two large pieces of hot pita bread. The rice, seasoned with dill, was unlike any I've had before, but it was fantastic. Total was only $8.95 and the food was delicious. I'll definitely be back. As a side note to all my veg*n friends, MedCafe is VERY vegetarian friendly and most dishes can be veganized by leaving off the feta or asking them omit the tzatziki sauce. I didn't feel that this food was the most tasty and I love Mediterranean food. I was looking forward to trying the dinner for two with my man, but it wasn't what I had hoped for. I felt that the kabobs were over cooked and I was looking forward to those the most. Everything else was just ok and was kind of overshadowed by the toughness of the kabob. We were the only ones in the restaurant and were able to watch Judge Judy while we enjoyed our meal. They provided plenty of pita bread and the selection on the giant plate was vast. I've been to Mediterranean Cafe twice... Both times ordered the Dinner for 2 & it did not disappoint! The meal could easily serve 3+ people. The Greek salad was *meh* but not bad... Meat is good quality, love the herbed rice, grapes leaves are delicious, tabouli is great - overall it's a great deal. I can't comment on the dine in service but the owner has been very friendly each time I have come to pick up my order and everything is prepared promptly. I like Greek food. I don't have it nearly as much as I'd like to, but I do enjoy it. And on Sunday, after battling the crowds and the heat at Earth Day in Balboa, nothing sounded better than getting take out from this little café. I called in and ordered their Mediterranean veggie delight for myself while my buddy asked for the beef shish and chicken kabob plate. They said it'd take about fifteen minutes so we got in the car, showed up in twenty minutes, and the food wasn't ready. I wasn't bent though because we weren't in any rush, and then I noticed the sign above their kitchen that read "Good food takes time, thank you for your patience!" So clearly, their food takes a while so it should be worth the wait, right? Well I'm glad to say it was. Once we got home, I immediately dug into my veggie delight plate! It came with warm pita bread, hummus, falafel, spanakopita, herb rice, and a small helping of greek salad. The falafel was definitely my favorite. The spanakopita was good, but could've used a little more flavor. There was something lacking (not enough feta, perhaps?). The hummus tasted great and the salad was a welcome added bonus to an already filling meal. And all this food only set me back about nine bucks. My buddy seemed to enjoy his beef and chicken too. I'll definitely be back and most likely for take out once more. I'd actually like to enjoy my food inside the restaurant but when we were there, it was dead and lacking in energy. I was craving some Mediterranean food and saw the Yelp review were good so decided to give it a go! My gf and I ordered food to go and decided to split the infamous dinner for two. It was a good deal at just above $20, however to our surprise we pulled up and on the window was painted a special for the dinner for two at just $19.95! Score! Not only that but when you check in on Facebook they give you another $2 off. This dinner for two lasted us for two meals at only $17.95! I was thrilled and not only that the food was actually really good. The dinner for two comes with a HUGE salad with gyro meat on top, rice, 2 dolmeh, 2 falafel, 4 kebab skewers, 2 orders of pita, tabouleh, and hummus. This is a place to go for ingredients, NOT fixings. You get the same salad with every meal, the same Gyros-style dipping sauce, same dressing etc., almost no matter what you get. But the steak or chicken or salmon itself is very good- I particularly recommend salmon wraps, beef khabob, and chicken hummus. My boyfriend and I were walking by on the way to study at Coffee Bean down the street... I may not have noticed Mediterranean Cafe just walking by, but he was immediately enticed! The decor inside felt more Italian (the vines and huge case of wine!), but overall a cute and cozy neighborhood gem. We ordered the gyro & beef combo, which came with a side salad, rice & pita bread. The gyro was DELICIOUS -- so tender, full of flavor. The beef, however a tad dry... but we were quite happy with the meal. It was huge and we were both stuffed just sharing. The customer service was also fantastic! The server was super friendly and sweet. She told us we had to wait about 10 minutes for the food (we took it to go), but the wait was actually only about 5 minutes. Also, we checked Yelp and saw that you get a free slice of Key Lime Pie if you mention Yelp -- AWESOME. I never liked Key Lime Pie before, but this pie was sooo good. We've lived in San Diego for over 30 years and it is a pleasant surprise to find a great new restaurant - especially one that has been around for 18 years. We've driven past the Mediterranean Cafe many time but never had a chance to stop. We stopped last night - it was amazing. The food was excellent, better than restaurants that cost 50% more. The service was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. My wife and I shared the special for two - $19.95. Delicious and so much food we had to take a box home. I had a chance to talk to Fred, the owner, I told him to raise his prices! He said he hasn't raised his prices in years. As an extra bonus, he does catering. I used to frequent the Mediterranean Cafe in Hillcrest quite a lot back in the day. I first happened upon the place on a Fourth of July with my girlfriend at the time (in 1999) and another friend. It was one of the only places open on the big holiday. There was this cool, calm dude with Black black hair and a black black mustache working behind the counter. I am sure he was either Greek or Lebanese. He and this other dude in the kitchen were the only two running the place. The decor was really pretty sad. Just a wall that had some semi cheesy mural painted on it and another wall with a tall shelf of various sundries imported from the Mediterranean somewhere. There was about three years of dust accumulated on top of each of the jars and cans on that shelf. Nothing I would have ever bought and taken home. Another thing I remembered is that they had this Gypsy Kings cd on the player, and it played over and over again, the same cd. It was the same cd that my old boss would play every damn night at the Spanish/Italian restaurant where I worked. It was in the Gaslamp, back before all the crazy condo building and ballpark, back when you could go to Street Scene and have a good time and Ray Charles played every year and back when you could still find parking and Mardi Gras was free to the public. But I digress. I would later go to the Med Cafe several times a year and I swear every year, up until my silent mustachioed friend left or sold the business, they would have that same damn cd on playing. But apart from bad music and basic decor, the food was very very good. I mean the kebobs they made were so tender and perfectly cooked, with the chicken probably having been marinated for days or something. And the way they grilled them left a nice, crispy crunch to the outside of the meat. They were never a dissapointment. The hummus always needed an extra splash of olive oil (which they had on the tables, along with this blended vinaigrette for the salads which came dry) and desserts weren't that special. But everything else there was yummy. I even tried one of the little pizzas one time. It was so thin it was like a tortilla underneath. But it was crispy and cheesy and good. I usually just ate the kebob special, with salad and rice mixed with dill. Or I would eat the gyro special, with fries or rice, salad and a soda for only five bucks! That special was always my calling siren on a passing night where I would be hungry and in need of a good bargain. I probably took everyone I ever knew to that place at one time or another. The guy would always recognize me and it seemed it was always someone else new I was taking there. But that is what I mean - I thought the place was so tasty and such a great deal that I took everyone I knew there to eat. That is until last summer, in 2006. That was the last time I went there. By then there was this kinda chubby, kinda Mexican-looking lady working the counter. I had seen her the previous few times I had eaten there. I realized that something was up the first time my old dark-haired friend with the strong accent was not there to greet me. Now this lady, and some other dude in the kitchen I didn't recognize, were working the joint. I ate there a few times. The chicken wasn't as tender and scrumptious as it used to be. The flavors in most of the food were a bit off. But it was mainly the grilled meat that did it for me. Where the other two offered to the gods above their charred lingams of perfection, the recent crew just offered standard fare to the clients, silently hoping that we wouldn't notice the changes. The last and final time I stopped by the Mediterranean Cafe was during a hot August evening with an Italian friend of mine. We had a meal there and it was not too bad, considering. But when I went to pay for our food I noticed that the lady overcharged me. I asked her to take off the item she put on there and she just took off the base price. I mentioned she should also recalculate the tax so I was not paying tax on nothing I consumed (it's just the principle). She didn't know how to do that with her little calculator, so I asked to do it myself and pushed the buttons to eventually display the correc t price. Then I gave her my cash and she gave me the wrong change in return! I know mistakes happen, and that's not the reason I don't really go to this place anymore. It is this along with the fact that the place went downhill in general since the days when the other guy was there. It wasn't always empty either, like I see everyone else here on Yelp is saying. I just have to find a new haunt to frequent and show off to people who come to visit me. I wish I knew what happended to my old friend at the Mediterranean Cafe. May the gyro live on, however, in our hearts and collective memories, and may the perfectly grilled kebob be the pinnacle on which we set our sights... read more

My boyfriend and I must eat here (usually take out) at least once to twice a week. Our typical order is Greek Salad with either Salmon or Chicken and a scoop of hummus. Their pita bread is always still fresh and warm when we get the food home to eat and the meal never ever disappoints. Once in a while we will dine in and order the Appetizer Sampler which is a feast in itself. Every item on the plate is excellent. The Beef and Chicken Kebabs are also great! Ok, I have to start by saying that Mediterranean food probably isn't my favorite food. I usually don't get too excited about shish-kabobs. But I have to say, Mediterranean Cafe gets it right, in a delicious way! It's a small, casual restaurant in an old building on Washington Street, but the restaurant always is clean inside. The chicken kabobs, gyros & hummos combo plate is my favorite, and the salmon plate is also very tasty and I'm sure it's pretty healthy too! Whatever you do, be sure to save room for a piece of their homemade key lime pie! It's the best I've found, outside of Joe's Stonecrabs in Miami Beach! I've been to the Mediterranean Cafe several times and try something new with every visit. No pretensions here just a warm environment, created by the owner, makes it comfortable to ask for assistance about menu items, or seek out the Chef's own suggestions. A quick review within review about Fred, I knew I was going to like this place the first time i came in. Fred is always there to greet you with a smile and make you feel comfortable right off the bat. Doesn't make you feel rushed or light you're taking up his precious time and best of all he can jump in with a colorful suggestion of menu items if you are undecided. always think that he is happy to share his little slice of heaven with us. Back to my review. The soups are always hearty, plentiful and fresh. I can't get enough of the Avgolemono soup (chicken/lemon/egg), which swear has magical healing powers when I am under the weather. Take your pick of any salad with Mediterranean ingredients, very refreshing, unique and abundant! The felafels seem to be in everyone's order, while I sit in, besides the warm and filling gyros, I recently came with a coworker on our lunch, unfortunately had to get it to go. I had the Gyros and Hummus plate, can you say tasty vittles? Hadn't had Hummus in a while and yum! My coworker had the humongous Beef Kabob plate, which she let me taste and again yum! It was huge. I am so glad I was walking down the street looking for lunch and I walked into this beauty. For my first visit, I was craving lemon chicken soup and I decided to try a falafel. I never had a falafel before so I had no idea to expect. Well, I don't like falafel, but thats ok because their lemon chicken soup was BOMB. For my second visit I ordered my lemon chicken soup and had a gyro sandwich instead. So good I could not finish it! I took it home. For my third visit, I ordered my lemon chicken soup, a tofu greek salad and french fries. The guy (owner?) was worried I would not be able to finish because he knew it would be a lot of food and added a note to put my salad in a take out box. I warned him though that I eat a lot so maybe I'll finish it. I finished my soup, fries and about 2/3 of my salad. Owner: so how'd you do? (when I asked for a bag and fork to take my salad home) Me: oh not too bad, I finished quite a bit of it. I ate all the tofu, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Owner: here give it to me. Tasty Greek basics at a reasonable prices in large quantities. That's a combination for repeat visits in my book. The gyros were among the best I've had in the finest city and the beef kabob was very moist and tender. More of that bomb pita would be nice, olives on the salad were too mushy and salad was a bit light on the feta. Otherwise great meal at a good price. Note that if you have a groupon the owners consider the dinner for 2 a special offer and so the groupon may not be "combined" with special offer. I thought that was lame since its a standard menu item and wasnt excluded on the groupon. But hey I guess if they further discount that much food they'll be losing money which doesnt work. But the groupon so should clearly say the dinner for 2 is not covered. read more

FAN-TAS-TIC! I thought that this was pretty good overall. I would come here more often but it is not necessarily in my hood. But it will be my go to for some gyro, hummus, and a kebob. I liked that it really isn't your typical "greek" food. They have a little bit from here and there, hence the name Mediterranean Cafe. The price was great for the portion that we were served, and I was so full I had to take some of it home to snack on later. Don't be fooled by the outside, come on in and feel at home in the quaint little decorated dinning area. They have a selection of wines to choose from, if you fancy, and they also had some desserts that looked bomb, (I didn't have any of them but the Key Lime Pie looked scrumptious). Their version of Tzatziki sauce was not my favorite. Maybe a little on the dill side. Overall, a pretty good place. The waitress was friendly and took care of us quite well. Yes, the place was a ghost town when we were there (only 2 tables occupied, including ours). The wine list is fairly large and on Mon/Tues, they have 50% off on bottles. For appetizers, we (wife and I) had escargot and caprese salad. The esgargot was just "eh" (but I'm not much of an escargot fan) and the caprese salad was also an "eh." I had lamb chops for dinner which were very good and the wife had grilled salmon, which was grilled about 30 sec too long, and instead of leaving nice grill marks, left burnt lines on it, ruining the taste. We mentioned it to the waitress and she removed the caprese salad to make up for it. Dessert was creme brule (pretty good) and wife had some cake, I think tiramisu, which was OK, but Claire de Lune's is much better. We weren't totally scared away by this experience, so we'll go back. OK, so their food is pretty good- not the best mediterranean food I've ever had, but good nonetheless- their tsaziki sauce doesn't taste original to me but the pita bread always comes out warm and delicious, so I don't mind that much. I've had the chicken kabob with fries, which was really good- the chicken was juicy and well seasoned. I've also had their salmon greek salad- not the best quality of lettuce but the salmon makes up for it. Also, their key lime pie is TO DIE FOR. How have I lived in Hillcrest for two years and have never eaten at this amazing place? Hidden on a very unassuming block on the edge of Hillcrest/Mission Hills, is this amazing little greek gem. Unlike Daphne's down the street, the food here is authentic and flavorful; as opposed to fast food processed and dry. We ordered a "dinner for two" for $19.95. First the salad arrived and was a very nice, large greek salad with tahziki dressing. Everything was very fresh and the olives were amazing! Then came the platter and all I can say is OMG! Fresh pita and hummus, greek salad, rice, a chicken and steak kabob, fresh gyro, falafel, and a ton more. Was way more food than my boyfriend and I could ever eat, and so flavorful. And the ambiance is also very cool. When you step into this location it's like you're stepping into a scene from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (and I totally mean that in a good way, btw). The food was so good! My husband got a spinach roll and I got a chicken kabob plate. So much food and I wanted to keep eating. Very fresh-- The bathroom is disgusting though! My daughter held her nose as she peed. It smelled of urine that had not been cleaned off floor in years. I agree with the "carry out only" review. read more
