We live across the street and sadly due to Coronavirus we haven't been able to come here to eat dinner in person. We decided to splurge and order take out to support their business, which didn't take too long to prepare. Everything was packed lovely and morning was missing. The starter salads were a good portion with a mustard based dressing. The steak frites was excellent, a little more medium but the fries and sauce it comes with was awesome. Heads up, don't bring children. Never assume a restaurant will have food to sell that isn't on fixed menu. That was my mistake before going (I did not look at the menu online). Because that was my mistake I did not factor this into the score. I said I would wait and she copped an attitude. The bread should go straight to croutons. The fries are better at five guys. They had a mushroom special that arrived 10 minutes after the steak and salty fries arrived. I have been to the Cleveland Park location and wanted to like this more than I did. The food was fine, dining room was half filled on a recent Saturday night. So the menu is simple: a simple salad, hangar steak, fries. You get two servings of steak (pro tip: take all they offer you on the second pass and bring home leftovers). The bread was warm crusty and excellent. The wine was fine and not too expensive. Steak had a nice flavor but lacked any char and was instead kind of wet. Similarly the brown sauce it comes with is nice, but was separating a bit. For dessert the ice cream Sunday looks like something out of a cartoon! We also had key lime pie which could be skipped. The waiter was attentive and quick to take our order and bring drinks. The salad appetizer, included with brunch, was also surprisingly good. The eggs and the sauce on the steak were a bit of a disappointment. The poached eggs had zero flavor. Fortunately, a little bit of salt helped with that problem. It's rather new and interesting concept. The steak cut is just okay for me. I thought the meat is a bit too thin for my liking, but then it's a steak and frites style. I would comeback and order it again though. The portion is rather decent. Note that they would serve the steak in two waves. Why the 4 not 5 star? While I like the idea of serving the steak in 2 waves to keep the steak warm, the execution is not that easy apparently. The first wave steak was good and perfectly grilled but the second wave steak is too dry. That's a big let down. Other minor things are no kids menu and thought they put too much sauce in the steak. I probably would not go back to Medium Rare mostly due to the quality of food. The steak was not a premium cut of meat. It was heavily salted, I assume as preservative to the meat and heavily spiced with gravy added, I would assume to cover up the low quality of meat. When I went I was there for my wife's birthday and after we ordered dessert they then decided to bring out the extra birthday dessert. Now, granted, this is a free extra dessert however I just find it odd to bring this out after we've just finished dessert. I was wondering why this place was lower rated than other MRs in the area. I can only assume that it has to be due to the organization of the staff. To be fair, my friends and I had a miscommunication and 2 of us had been at the table for a while waiting for our full party. We then waited 45 minutes for Salad. An hour for our first round and half hour for the 2nd round. Over the course of the night, two glasses were shattered by me, with a mumble of an apology. Called this Medium Rare location in early February 2021 to confirm that they were serving in the large tent they have set up just outside the restaurant. I was assured categorically that they were (and that the tent was heated). And was told I needed to make a reservation if I wanted to dine outdoors, presumably because there was so much demand for outdoor dining. Arrived a short time later, choosing to go here instead of another restaurant offering outdoor dining. Paid for parking. Entered the restaurant and was told by the hostess that they only had indoor dining. Their tent was not in use because it was not heated. That their phone calls were handled by a call center with no knowledge of what was actually happening at the restaurant. From her reaction, it appeared that I was far from the first to have been misinformed by the call center. Giving out misinformation to customers who call reflects a total lack of concern or interest in potential customers, especially given people's very legitimate health concerns because of COVID. Medium rare is not deserving of my or anyone else's business. read more

I give Medium Rare a 2.5 rating. I came here for a birthday brunch and the staff was very accommodating of our large party. They even let some early birds get a jump start on the 10 cent mimosas and bloody marys while they waited. Throughout the brunch, the staff was friendly, attentive, and willing to break up our check in what I'm sure was an annoying and complicated way. Unfortunately, the great service couldn't make up for the poor food and extremely weak drinks. I know you don't want people getting sloppy on almost bottomless drinks, but they also shouldn't be so weak that the mimosas aren't even carbonated. In terms of the food, my friend got to steak frites and she joked that it looked like a kid's meal as the portion was so small. I tried some of the steak frites and the fries were fine, but the steak was cut extremely thin and had the consistency of a wet noodle. Very disappointing. I had the eggs benedict which was honestly so terrible I only ate the eggs and let everybody else eat the rest (which they wanted to because of the small portions of the steak frites). The poached eggs were very runny (which I like), but the "hash" was more of a mash of slow cooked beef and chunks of mushrooms that were so indistinguishable you couldn't tell which was which in the slop. I was expecting sauteed pieces of meat with chunks of mushrooms that were not a mush....you know....a hash. The bread was also just a slice of baguette that I was told was really soggy (did not even bother trying). We did get a slice of chocolate cake for my the birthday boy and it was nice and warm. Or if there was it was doled by Ebeneezer Scrooge. Bland, and kind of chewy. Also the 'secret sauce' should remain a secret. I have no idea what is in it, but it shouldn't be served on anything. Sauces should compliment, not cover up culinary sins and that's the only thing I can think of as to why its provided - to cover up the fact that they have sub-par steak. However seeing as the sauce in and of itself is a culinary sin, I can't see why it would even be provided in the first place. Now - the fries.. Are you kidding me? Fries!? What am I twelve? For the price I expected something other than $0.50 worth of fries. Lets face it, no more than that was spent in producing them. Not even labor. No seasoning, and just fried potatoes. This "4.5" star review is only for dinner - I have not yet tried their brunch. Medium Rare has become a go to spot because they consistently execute their concept really well, at a great value. The secret sauce is beyond delicious, the frites are perfectly crisp, and I love the dressing on the salad. You can also find a nice bottle of wine that isn't crazy expensive, which makes for a nice date night. The ice cream sundae is also ridiculously good. Maybe too good, even. It's not the coziest atmosphere; some of the tables are very tight and it can get noisy when the tables are full. But I'd take good food over ambience any day. I do dock 1/2 star for the inconsistency of the steak temperature at this location. Most times it arrives to temperature, but I have had an occasion or two where it's been over. These people have it going on pandemic style. The patio is covered with a lovely tent so you don't have to watch the sky. All tables are comfortably distanced. The menu is streamlined to what everyone should order anyway: delicious bread that had my baker boyfriend comparing it to a cross between a croissant and the best baguette, simple delicious salad, and the most succulent beef and crispy delectable fries. We admired the small portion, which was in accord with the reasonable prix fixe, and felt it was perfect to eat up and not need to consider left overs. They offer one side, grilled portobello mushroom, served with an even sweeter tomato-based sauce. Disappointing. There's pretty good bread and a decent green salad.
