In Praise of The Staff at Melvyn's Last evening we ventured out to one of our most beloved restaurants, Melvyn's At The Ingleside Estate, with the intention of enjoying some jazz (brilliantly delivered by Rick Ross, whose talents continue to impress) and perhaps a nice dinner at one of the most elegant spots in Palm Springs. Now, we understand that times have changed - certainly, the clientele has - but we wonder at what point it became acceptable in a fine dining establishment for the patrons to arrive in black tshirts and shorts and plop themselves unceremoniously at the table, and conduct conversation in tones and volume one usually hears at a football match? Once upon a time, collarless shirts weren't even ALLOWED in the place, of course, but we suppose that rule went out the window when Mr. Haber, the previous owner, sold the property; the subsequent proprietors, whose only business experience must have been running a "Hot Dog On A Stick" at the Chino Hills Mall, have evidently decided that decorum is a four letter word. But we're not here to condemn them - they obviously are in business to make money, and the cash of vulgarians is just as green as that which comes from people who know how to use knives and forks at the dinner table. What we are here to do is celebrate the staff of Melvyn's. Watching these immaculately dressed, perfectly mannered, and skillfully polished waiters, servers, busboys, bartenders and cocktail waitresses - as well as the hostesses at the front - as they smile and deliver the kind of thoughtful and deliberate customer service which once was the hallmark of this historic restaurant made us at once proud of them and, frankly, a little heartbroken. They are all SO VERY GOOD at their jobs, despite the behavior and lack of manners evinced by so many of their customers. Every one of them is to be commended for their grace and professionalism, and last night they reminded us of what a great and glorious place Melvyn's once was...and, perhaps with a little luck and, maybe, some compulsory etiquette classes for potential diners, surely will be again. Oh, and for the record, the food was excellent as always and our martini was perfect! read more

My second time at Melvyn's. We sat at the bar drinking wine for an hour. Buddy was the bartender and it was fun asking him questions about Frank Sinatra at Melvyn's - where did he sit, what did he drink, and what was his dish? Sinatra ordered Steak Diane and was a Jack Daniels drinker. Buddy was very informative and pleasant. The bar ambiance was very friendly. My friend ordered Steak Diane, prepared table side. The meat was tender and the sauce was fine except he wished for more of a mushroom flavor than it had. But still awesome overall. I had seared scallops. They provided 4 medium ones and they were delicious. Our sides were carrots and Mac n cheese. Carrots were fantastic but the Mac n cheese was a little disappointing. Not cheesy at all. We started with the Beet Deviled Eggs. They were very good. Our wine was the Bordeaux. It was very Old World. It was a great experience overall. Excellent experience. We ordered dirty gin martini and old fashion. Both were made perfectly! The old fashioned wasn't sweet and the martini was just dirty enough. We ordered the seafood tower which had a lot of seafood on it. Crab, lobster, shrimps oysters. All were fresh and tasty. The only thing was that the lobster was too frozen and hard to get the meat out. Next we ordered the 10oz New York and the Diane. Amazing. We ordered it medium well and it was cooked to perfection. I did find the Diane sauce to be a little sweet but that's how it is meant to be. read more

It wouldnt be a trip to Palm Springs without a visit to the legendary Melvyn's for cocktails. It IS a vibe. Old school nostalgia and elegance with some of THE best martinis of your life. I opted for the Classic Cosmo pictured, but the star was our bartender Buddy's chocolate martini, not pictured. My husband took a sip before I could get the perfect shot, but trust me when I tell you it was icy, chocolatey heaven. Review of the food at Melvyns! This is a part of their 50th anniversary celebration so their menu is a little different. I was told it will return back to normal soon. This was a Thursday night and it was a bit booked more than I anticipated. It's a bit of a gathering spot for locals for drinks and for live piano music. Interesting! We didn't have reservations so we just sat in the side bar-ish area. A solid 4.75 stars rounded up. 50th Anniversary dinner Food: - Steak Frites ($42): we had the steak at a medium and it was really flavorful! I really enjoyed how they cooked this steak and the sauce that was already surrounding it. Fries were thin and standard nothing special. - Chicken pot pie ($34): this was a big pot pie and it was delicious! Smooth, comfort, and very easy on the pallete. I enjoyed the crusty outer later and how it was all cooked within the plate. These two entrees shared between my partner and I was perfect. Not too heavy but we were full. Pros: - Caters to older folks and has that tinge of old school vibes. - Delicious flavors! - outside valet if you need it! $10 - live entertainment like a piano singer! Cons: - classic steakhouse vibes and prices. Reminds me of Morton's and Flemings. - I don't get the reservation system. There were still quite a few tables without patrons but we still were sat with the drinks&socializing folks. Not horrible since we got a great view of the live piano singer. We decided to take our nephew who turned 19 to Melvin's for the first time. It's one of those restaurants that have lots of history going back to the Brat Pack days. For an appetizer, we had the red beet deviled eggs, which was the best I've ever had in my entire life. The honey bacon glaze was wonderful. For my entree, I had the steak Diane, which I thought was pretty good, but not the best I've ever had. The sauce was a little bitter, but worked well with the steak. The steak was surprisingly small but was cooked just right, medium rare. The sides were à la carte so we chose the most popular which was the mac & cheese and fries. Wow, what an evening out. If you're looking for an old school steakhouse experience with the feel of Elvis, Marilyn and Sinatra this is the spot. We loved our food. Shrimp cocktail was that rare exceptional experience you can almost never get. Steak and sea bass shined. Banana foster desert an absolute must. Service was slightly slow but the ratings are far off from the experience and I'm so glad we trusted those reviews that said just this. I absolutely love this place. I ordered the NY Steak, cooked to a perfect medium rare. Every bite was tender and tasty, including the fat. I asked if they had horseradish and the waiter responded with, "Creamy or real horseradish?" I got the "real" stuff and it was really spicy, which I loved. I also tried a piece of my friend's escargot (tasty) and split a baked potato with another friend. All was good. Another member of our party ordered the Ceasar salad to split with our buddy. It looked delicious and had a very fresh-looking anchovy on top. According to one member of our group, the Beef Wellington was the best he's ever had. We also ordered plenty of cocktails. The service was very good and the atmosphere is fantastic. Old school Palm Springs and classy. There was a pianist in the bar, who also sang. He did standards from the Great American Songbook. That was a big plus as well. All around I thought that Melvyn's was fantastic. I hope to return soon. read more

Melvyn's is by far one of the best and most classic restaurants in Palm Springs. This establishment has been around longer than I've been coming here over the past six years, but wow the food and martinis still taste just as delicious and consistent every time I visit. The service is just as amazing too. My husband and I have been coming here since we first started dating, and look forward to coming back to Melvyn's for our anniversary when we can. The service was exceptional and the old school atmosphere was endearing though a bit tired. I ordered the chicken-pot-pie. The presentation was tremendous with a large, beautiful pastry crust daring one to dig in. I immediately discovered the underlying plate had a huge RIM which made the dish look much bigger than one would think. The crust was a bit bland. I made my way through and discovered what looked like can veggies and sparse, cubes of chicken. There was little, if any, flavor and not much chicken to be found. Unbelievably bland. I added a touch of salt, but it didn't help much. Steak Diane was also served to my table and I asked how it was. The answer was "OK".... but not great. I didn't want to complain, but I'm sure if I would have spoken up, they would have replaced my meal with no problem. Again, the service was very good. read more

We decided last minute to have dinner at Melvyn's, and were lucky enough to be able to get a res, on a weeknight, for 4. Three of the four in our group had the chicken pot pie and loved it, said it was best they'd ever had. I had the pork chop and it was one of the best cooked pork chops ever! The restaurant was beautiful and set up for their 50th anniversary the next evening, so was lovely. Our server was a handsome british gentleman (forgot his name) but he and the young man assisting him with service were attentive and anticipated our needs, excellent overall! By it's reputation, Melvyn's is a Palm Springs classic - so we did not pass up the opportunity to have dinner here for the first time. Even on a weeknight, the restaurant was full. Certainly the atmosphere was bustling and had a nice energy. We had a crusty waiter that evening, but he mellowed over the course of the meal. For dinner we had French Onion Soup, Caesar Salad, Chilean Sea Bass and the Chicken Pot pie - which was ginormous. Everything was beautifully prepared and delicious. Service was prompt and the timing of our courses was excellent. Next time, I will try their Steak Diane, which they still prepare table side (old school). Overall - very enjoyable meal. read more

Came here for my birthday fully aware that the reviews were... mixed. I went in with some hesitation, zero expectations, and an open mind--and ended up genuinely impressed. This is a true old-school steakhouse straight out of the Frank Sinatra era (apparently his favorite restaurant), and it fully leans into that legacy. The decor feels frozen in time--in the best way--with classic, original touches from the '70s. Think old-school gentleman waiters, cocktail waitresses, and a supper-club vibe you just don't see anymore. It's nostalgic, charming, and honestly very cool. The food was excellent. The tableside steak Diane was absolutely to die for--rich, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. And the martinis... wow. The filthy dirty Melvyn's martinis were hands down the best we've ever had. Cold, bold, unapologetically dirty--exactly how a martini should be. Our waiter was no-frills and very direct. No pacing out the order, no back-and-forth--he insisted we order everything at once and confidently told us he'd time it perfectly. And he did. Efficient, professional, and surprisingly refreshing. The service was excellent without being overly chatty, which fit the place perfectly. We loved it so much that we came back three nights later just to sit in the bar and enjoy those same incredible martinis again. When we complimented them and asked the bartender what made them different, the response was a bit standoffish--"It's just how we make them." Fair enough, but a little warmth would've gone a long way. All in all, this place is a vibe. Old-school, high-end, tucked inside a charming cottage-like hotel, with great food, legendary martinis, and direct but solid service. Best steak I've had in a long time. My husband and I had dinner at Melvyn's to celebrate our anniversary. We came specifically for the steak Diane and it did not disappoint. The waiter was friendly and made some cocktail and entree suggestions. He told us a little about the history of Melvyn's when I asked which table was Sinatra's. I ordered the Melvyn's martini with blue cheese olives and my husband had an Estrella Jalisco. We ordered two steak Dianes, one order of garlic mashed potatoes, and an order of broccolini to share. Perfection. I wouldn't have changed a thing! We turned down dessert because we were too full, but the waiter surprised us with a panna cotta to share for our anniversary. We will definitely return. The service was great & loved the ambience, ordered the Baja oysters (they were so petite& small) but they were good! For dinner we ordered the special a tomahawk steak! Which was our first one ever & wow! it was SO GOOD! (worth it $$) For sides we choose the creamed spinach (which the server recommended and so glad she did! It was the best creamed spinach I've ever had! & the Mac & cheese, which was really good too! Overall we had a delicious special occasion meal & a great experience! I booked a reservation at Melvyn's as part of a special weekend to celebrate my fiancee's retirement. We absolutely love steakhouses with a historic vibe, so we were excited to check it out for the first time and celebrate. It turned out to be a huge mistake. When we arrived, our table wasn't ready yet but since we arrived a few minutes late, we didn't mind. When they led us to our table, I noticed that it had not been properly set. There was no glassware, and no candle. All it had was napkins and a knife and fork for each of us. Looked barren to say the least. We waited ten minutes and no one had come to say hi or bring us any water. We watched as other tables were served and we were ignored. Finally, a server who was attending to a large group at the table next to us leaned over and said he'd be right with us. Fast forward another five to seven minutes...he finally came over. I asked for water and a candle for our table, as well as cocktails and food since it seemed like we'd better get the orders in all at once to ensure we'd get things in a reasonable amount of time. When my fiance ordered a Rye Manhattan, the server (I think his name was Omar) had a really odd response. He pointed out that there was a Melvyn's Manhattan on the cocktail menu, but my fiance replied that the one on the menu had bourbon and he wanted rye whiskey. Then the waiter said "No it is made with rye", to which we both replied that no, it does NOT have rye. Like, he was nearly arguing about this. Clearly, the server hasn't studied the menu enough. Once we placed our orders, we waited for water. A busser came by to introduce himself and check on us. We once again asked for water and a candle. He replied, "I'll get that for you right away." Guess what happened next? Yup. No water, no nothing. By this time we'd been sitting for nearly 25 minutes. Everyone else was getting served something except us. We finally had enough and got up to leave. On our way out I spoke to the manager, who apologized profusely and said they were just really slammed and people were camping out and not leaving. He offered to put us at another table, but I was nearly in tears and knew I was not going to enjoy my experience regardless, so I declined and we left. Once we got out of the door, I started crying. I had such high hopes and wanted my fiance to have a nice time celebrating his retirement, and Melvyn's totally messed up our dinner and experience. I will never, ever return or recommend this place to anyone. Never imagined a place with such a pedigree could be this awful. read more

I'm at a 4.5 stars for Melvyn's but rounding up for the sake of the entirety of the experience. Classy dining in Palm Springs! We had some old school favorite dishes at Melvyn's at the Ingleside Inn, reservations made on Open Table. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We were surprised they had a live piano player jamming out inside. Really nice to add to the swaggy digs ambiance, apparently live music happens every night from 6-10pm! Let's talk the eats! Bread + Butter ($5) was solid. The Beet Pickled Deviled Eggs ($14) were divine with a tad of maple bourbon bacon added gracefully on top! Cute and loved the extra touch the beets gave to the eggs. The Steak Diane ($68) was very tasty with a beautiful table side preparation. Risotto ($34) was cooked well and really tasty, as well. We loved all our dishes and with tip included, we were at $192. That didn't seem egregious to us for such a lovely dinner! Overall, loved the atmosphere, live music, excellent service and great food. Though we just ate at Melvyn's, the Ingleside Inn has gorgeous grounds and hotel rooms. Old Hollywood loved Melvyn's! I am a huge "Golden Era of Hollywood" fan and being able to celebrate my wedding anniversary where the Rat Pack used to dine was at the top of my list. our food was amazing, or waiter was top notch and the atmosphere was just as i expected, a time capsule back to that amazing era of Hollywood. My wife was recommended to this restaurant, driving on to the property was easy, the restaurant was tucked away. Feels like your in the 50ies witch is pretty cool vary dark setting and I would say seasoned waiters and waitresses have been ther a while. This restaurant is part of a boutique hotel. So starting off they do not offer you free bread, ok my wife started with a Caesar salad that was honestly just OK , I love Ceaser. I'm like a Cesar snob. For our many course we both ordered chilien Seabass à la cart nice size piece of fish, creamed spinach and my favorite truffle fries. They were really good and nice size portion. The cream of spinach. needed to be creamier in my opinion. And for dessert we had bananas Forster and that was also great. The show is fun. read more

Melvyn's has lost its luster. We have come to Melvyn's for 6 years and last night was a complete disaster. We had a table of 8 and were looking forward to great experience and it failed miserably. Several of our food choices were subpar. 1. The tuna tartar app was fishy and we left it uneaten. 2. The iceberg lettuce on the caesar salad was old and watery. I thought Caesar salad would have Romaine lettuce. 3. The Branzino was very fishy tasting. 4. The Bolognese was not hot and rather tasteless. I will say the creamed spinach was excellent. The final nail in the coffin was the automatic 25% tip and the 5% wellness tax put on our bill. Truly the worst $1,500 I have ever spent. Our friends made a reservation for six people on OpenTable for today Easter branch. It was our first time going to this restaurant that we had heard good things about. Nowhere on the website did we see that the only option for Easter brunch was a $125 per person buffet. This price didn't include any drink other than coffee or tea. We should have left the restaurant immediately instead of staying, that was our mistake. We thought that at least the food would be delicious. It was not at all. Several of us tried the crab and it was very dry and rubbery. Nothing was really special about the food. There was also a 5% surcharge called "wellness charge" in addition to the 20% automatic tip. First time here. Service was friendly and attentive. Old school vibe was enjoyable and different than most PS restaurants. Thats the positive and why the two stars versus one. The negative is - there is no other way to describe it - the food is simply awful. The Caesars salad I had was primarily made from the bitter bottom core of the Romaine, with watery, insipid dressing. French fries were very oily and looked old. The Coq au Vin wasn't really Coq au Vin but some sort of Coq Au Vin Blanc. It was basically parboiled chicken in bernaise sauce with cold potatoes and broccolini. Tasted like bad high school cafeteria food. I wonder if any of owners actually taste the food they serve customers. Based on many of the reviews it appears not. Its amazing how many customers still come here in spite of the food - that can't last forever there are too many better restaurants in Palm Springs especially when you are serving $80 entrees. read more

When we pulled up to the valet, we were told to prepay which was a little odd. Then, when we checked in for our 7:30 reservation at 7:30, we were told "it's going to be awhile, so please have a drink at the bar". Lame and lame. This was not our first visit to Melvyn's. We arrived a little early for our Saturday evening reservation and went to the bar for a cocktail. Once finished in the bar we were seated at out table which was way at the back. After being seated we were pretty much left alone. Eventually a busboy noticed that we did not even have water and rectified this. Our order was taken a while after that. The food was great and up to Melvyn's standard. However, it seemed there was only one waitress in a full dining room. Not surprisingly it appeared to the diners that service was slow, when in fact she was working flat out to cover everything. To me the big reason to choose Melvyn's, and the high price tag that goes with it, is outstanding service. Sadly, this time we felt let down and rather than Melvyn's being an automatic first choice, next time we will shop around. read more

This is for the piano bar only. The food looks good but it's pricey and we just stopped by for a drink. This was our second visit. One was on a quieter night a few years ago. Last time was the night before New Year's and the place was hoppin'. No room at the bar so we found a table in back. The waitresses, who are throwbacks to a better time, if you ask me, were a bit stretched because of the crowd, but they gave us menus and then we needed to wait a bit. It was understandable and when she finally came over she was very apologetic. The piano player was excellent both times we were there, and the drinks, a vodka martini and a Manhattan, were perfect. Yes, expensive-ish, but it's a hotel bar in Palm Springs so what do you expect. Anyway, great ambience from the past (the men's room has a non-working payphone on the wall), very 70's I would say. They have a Sinatra table and photos of some of the great celebs of yore all over the walls. Love this place and would happily recommend it to anyone for a drink and some music in the Palm Springs area. Tip: you can find a spot across the street and walk in to save the parking fee, which I'm guessing is 15 buck but not sure. read more

Classic and iconic eatery in Palm Springs situated within a hotel/resort in Downtown Palm Springs. Had dinner here a week ago. Although we had a reservation and arrived on time, there was a 10 minute scramble trying to put the table together for some reason. As if nobody was expecting us. Everyone friendly but we were approached by three separate people at the host stand - all totally not coordinated to one another. Was super odd. Once we were seated we were greeted by our high energy friendly server who appeared to be a bit scrambled. I ordered the fish which was beautifully prepared and at a decent temperature. I had a side of a baked potato which could have been baked for another 20 minutes easily. The experience was nice but unsure if it qualifies for the pricing level. The service was off for our entire dining room section and the bussing team was at a total loss. It took 68 minutes for our entrees to arrive which followed a very late and disjointed appetizer service. Our plates were left dirty on the table for about 40 minutes where we finally had to ask our server the status of entrees and they were totally surprised we were actually asking. They messed up all the other tables around us so clearly there was an issue that management should have honed in on immediately and at least helped. I believe they were having staffing issues but if that's the case where it impacts the dining experience, we should have received a free dessert or discount. Not even an apology was provided. Mel, I'm sure, would have been disappointed if he was alive and still running operations. They offer valet at a fee right in front along their private driveway.
