Got to enjoy the soft opening at the new Metro Diner at the beach today. Judging by the crowd, and large number of walk-ups turned away, there is a lot of enthusiasm for the beach version of this Jacksonville Institution. They are definitely ready for their opening tomorrow as the service was friendly, knowledgable, attentive, and fast. The food came out quickly even though there wasn't an empty table for more than the time it took to wipe it down and seat another group. My friends and I all ordered something different which the kitchen served at the same without any hiccups or cold plates. New to the menu at the beach is The Pittsburgh. This disgustingly large pastrami or roast beef sandwich includes a fried egg and french fries. It isn't meant to be eaten, but rather is just to garner attention as a talking point (think Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives). However, if you are into eating big, this fits the bill and was a tasty combination of flavors. There are two sides worth going back for. First, the onion rings. They are medium size, lightly battered, and thoroughly golden. Next, were the homemade potato chips with the lemony lime honey mustard sauce. They don't describe it as mustardy, but that's the word that comes to my mind. It is a dipping sauce that gets progressively better. My second favorite item was the grilled ham & cheese with tomato. Crispy, cheesy, and tomatoee. Order it with your preferred cheese. The best of the best today was the Reuben which is as good as or better than any Reuben anywhere. Other notable mentions were the Philly cheese and French Dip. Both were enjoyable. The only negative--the smell. Pretty standard to smell like a diner after eating there, but it is something I could do without. Still I'll be going back to Metro Diner soon. read more

This was my first time visiting this location in Jax Beach. I really liked the vibe and the open kitchen concept. I sat at the bar and watched all of the breakfast dishes being prepared. It was a good culinary education and entertaining as well. Lol You really can't go wrong with any Metro Diner location. Solid breakfast fare and reasonable prices. The staff are always friendly and energetic. I ordered the two egg special with bacon, home fries and biscuit. The eggs were so fresh and cooked perfectly. I loved the homemade biscuit. It was so light and fluffy. They give you a good amount of crispy bacon. I have to admit I wasn't a fan of the deep fried home fries. I was expecting a more traditional preparation. Decided to eat here Since it's been a while. We had a little bit of a way to get a waiter outside but he was good once we got him. I got the French vanilla coffee and my husband got the regular coffee both of which were really good brews. Our server, Adam, was truly on top of his job! Very cordial and made sure all our food came as we ordered! My husband ordered the protein plate and got his bacon which he likes extra crispy. They got it right which is a big statement! He ordered biscuits which were light fluffy and so tasty! Adam got anything we asked for as far as butter jam sauce as he was Johnny on the spot John's eggs were cooked to perfection with cheese and he was very satisfied. I got the all meat omeletteAnd a side of avocado and can I say the avocado was perfect right. The omelette was delicious and had bacon sausage and ham in it with cheddar cheese. It was on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives so naturally I had to check it out when I was in town. My brother went with the Monte Cristo and I went with the Seafood Frittatta. We sat at the "bar" and got to watch all the food get cooked. It was really cool. My brother enjoyed his, I enjoyed mine but I felt it was lacking a little flavor but it still was yummy. If I am in town again I am getting the Huevos Rancheros cause sitting there watching them make it made me want to change my order and maybe I should of but overall it was a really neat experience. read more

This was a great experience. Kayleigh was our server and was all over it. I never had to ask for anything. My wife however asked for more cream cheese which she had already paid for in her omelette. If you want hustle, bustle and friendly staff then you've found it at the Metro Diner. Located in a strip mall on 3rd Street the parking lot is just as busy. Good luck finding a space during peak hours. It was a 10-15 minute wait for a table but we found two counter seats. Glad we did because watching all the cooks was entertaining. The "expeditor" was poetry in motion. He got those orders out rapidly and occasionally turned around to check on the hash browns. At least a dozen piles were cooking away. There was such a variety of breakfast dishes available making my decision difficult. I settled on two eggs, biscuit, sausage and grits. My husband ordered the 12 inch pancake. Food was out in less than 10 minutes. No need for butter on the grits as they tasted buttery. Eggs were ok as well as the sausage. Biscuit had no flavor at all and was not light and fluffy. Pillsbury has better one in the frozen section of the grocery store. Pancake was nothing special either. The maple syrup was watery. It had no body. The only true bright light was our waitress, Nancy. She was friendly and efficient. Cute gal, too. If you go get dishes with more flavor. I saw a plate of home fries go out that I wish I had ordered. You can always count on Metro for great diner food, but always expect a wait. If it's just my husband and me, we hover near the bar for quick first-come-first-serve seating. Today the wait was an hour, but we sat ourselves in 2 minutes when we eyed a couple leaving the counter. Plus side is you can watch the line at work in the kitchen... organized chaos that makes you appreciate your meal. They have the best fried chicken and waffles I've had to date (a waffle that is crispy and not soggy, chicken that is crispy but juicy and seasoned well, throw in strawberry butter and syrup mixed with hot sauce, and you can slip into a happy food coma!) but today I felt like just a spicy honey chicken biscuit. I do my home fries grilled on the brown side. And to satisfy my sweet tooth, a side of a pancake with strawberry butter. I like their shrimp and grits and my husband likes their meat loaf, too. I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't like Metro Diner (though I have to say every location is a little different... I hate the one in Ponte Vedra, my food was awful there!). I went with the famous chicken and waffles with strawberry butter and the mixed hot sauce and syrup. When it gets set on your table it is a rather impressive site. The waffle, strawberry butter, and hot sauce with syrup were absolutely worth the hype. I will definitely be mixing my hot sauce and syrup in the future. The fried chicken was sadly not as good as I was expecting, though you do get a very good amount of it. Unfortunately, it was a bit soggy, and didn't have the crispness you expect with fried chicken. The drum stick piece also seemed a little undercooked as well. I think waffles with strawberry butter and hot syrup is the way to go in the future. Had a terrific experience here today! Had lunch with a friend visiting from Dallas who had never been to Metro Diner. We arrived right as they were closing but the host kindly invited us in anyway. The server was equally gracious and never made us feel rushed--even when we were the last patrons there! And, of course, the food was outstanding. She had eggs benedict and I had the chicken and waffles. Both were delicious! I raved about Metro Diner to my friend and they did not disappoint.
