January 29, 2024 My husband and I had our first ever meet and greet in this store, in this booth in 1921. We married a year later. We've returned many times , ordering the same thing. fried chicken sand and fish and chips. Always delicious. It was lunchtime so we knew, like always, we'd have to wait and were prepared for it. To our surprise the diner wasn't only 1/4 full and we were able to seat ourselves. The best thing about the entire lunch was that we were able to sit in "our booth." The filets: 1/2 the size than previously and greasy. Fries were horrible. Hubby only ate half the thin, dry chicken. His side was hash browns and he said they were excellent. Maybe that's why it was only 1/4 full at lunchtime. Sad. We're going to find a new spot. read more

Had the fried chicken Benedict in biscuit. Biscuit was light and fluffy. Eggs spot on poached. Fried chicken crispy and moist inside and 2 large pieces. Hollandaise is a bit "yellow" fo my taste and not enough given size of chicken pieces. My husband had the biscuits and gravy with over easy eggs also all properly cooked. My son and I returned to Metro Diner to have lunch when I picked him up from college. Today we decided to share 2 items. The San Francisco Eggs Benedict and Monte Cristo Sandwhich. I have to say the Eggs Benedict was great. The combination of avocado with a most perfectly poached egg and a light hollandaise sauce was delicious. The raspberry jam they serve with the Monte Cristo is amazing and the sandwich ( I reccomend you try it) was very good. My half had mostly breading, so my son offered me his half, however I ate the middle of my sandwich and was happy enough with the flavor I think their mac and cheese is missing something . Its creamy and it looks really good. I just wish it had more flavor. Overall our lunch was great and we enjoyed our visit. It was only 30 minutes before closing and the staff was friendly and welcoming, which we appreciated after a long morning of packing. read more

Metro diner is a sure win for a good, solid brunch. I met a few friends there early on a Sunday morning and the wait wasn't that bad. As one who typically goes with their fried chicken and waffle with that amazing strawberry butter and sweet and spicy sauce, I was looking forward to trying more of their menu. We got the fried chicken biscuit, shrimp and grits, biscuits and sausage gravy, and the holy davoli burger. I was really excited for the burger, mostly for the sheer gluttony of it all! The burger patty was situated between two bacon grilled cheese sandwiches. Yeeeessss!!!! There's no way this couldn't be good! The biscuits and gravy was another heavy but soul satisfying dish. I must say that the only disappointment on the table was the fried chicken sandwich. For a place that has great fried chicken, this chicken tender on a tiny bun was lacking in flavor and creativity. We were visiting from out of town and this was within walking distance of where we were staying. The meal we had here was really amazing, just the kind of classic and delicious breakfast/brunch food you might want. The service was really good, and quite honestly everything on the menu looked amazing. The Bissell Breakfast and the Biscuits and Gravy were what we settled on, and they gave us a great 'sampler' of a lot of things. I only ate part of the biscuit so that I could try the pancakes. The pancakes were the size of a small dinner plate. They were hot and tasty but this meal was simply too large for one person. I watched some of the other meals that were delivered to tables and those also were huge!. So when you come here...come hungry or take a doggie bag home. I probably would have given this visit a 5 had we not needed to chase our waitress down for pretty much everything from pancake syrup to refills on drinks. Remember the days when you had to wait awhile to get a table at Metro? Well the past several months the restaurant has been mostly empty, even during "prime times". The food just hasn't been good lately. I mentioned to my server that I was used to the old days with big, thick, crispy strips of delicious bacon. I come here often for the chicken and waffles but unfortunately I recently came here for breakfast and although we got there right when it opened, I was given old chicken and felt awful the rest of the day. I thought it was a one off so decided to give it another chance. Today, mother's day, I ordered the same thing and my chicken was undercooked and bloody in some spots, tried to eat around it. We informed our waitress who was very understanding and didn't charge us for the chicken which I'm very grateful for. WOW! This place is a must stop when I'm visiting Jacksonville. My best friend and I stopped by here for brunch around 10:15am on a Sunday (Mother's Day). It was very crowded and the wait was 45 minutes. Granted, it was Mother's Day so I assumed that was the reason but apparently it's pretty packed daily. Luckily, this diner is located in a strip mall so we did some shopping while we waited. They also provide lemon water and coffee to guest waiting outside which I had never seen before. My only complain is how small this place is. The could definitely use a bigger location considering the amount of customers they have. They also have a small area outside for dining. First thing that caught my eye, $2.99 mimosas ALL DAY EVERY DAY and they were strong! Beware if you hate pulp in your orange juice. Their menu is pretty large and everything sounds amazing but we tried the chicken and waffles. Absolute best chicken and waffles I've ever had thus far! The waffles were soft, the chicken was freshly fried and kinda greasy and the sweet and sour syrup (syrup with Louisiana hot sauce mixed) is a game changer. The portions are also large for the price. It comes with 4 waffle squares and 4 pieces of chicken (thigh, wing, breast and thigh). The turkey sausage was okay..nothing special. Highly recommended! read more

Our server was fantastic- friendly, fast & could hear all of our requests even when talking over one another. I ordered meatloaf (mom wanted some- but can't eat all of it, so I obliged), came with mashed potatoes & squash. Their meatloaf is one of my favorites! Mom ordered broccoli cheddar soup & barely finished her little cup! Having lived in the Northeast, when someone says diner, I envision a behemoth of a building, lots of chrome, a menu the size of a bible, long fast moving lines of people and a huge display case of ridiculously sized desserts. Instead, this place was in a strip mall, small but quaint with a surprisingly short and straightforward breakfast menu. I opted for an omelette with ham, mushrooms, onions and cheddar while my husband chose two fried eggs and sausage. Both came with shredded hash browns and toasted sourdough bread. The filling that accompanied my eggs was super flavorful. The ingredients were obviously sautéed before being added to the omelette which always enhances the flavor. I was happy with my choice. The toast was excellent, a nice tight chewy crumb that lent itself well to pats of butter and strawberry jam. The potatoes were ok and my husband's sausage was too salty to eat. First of all, thanks for being open on Easter morning. I was staying in a nearby hotel and walked over for pickup. Dry bread and plain hashbrowns I don't care to eat so unfortunately they went into the trash. My fault for not checking, but I feel like this is a basic part of picking up breakfast. Dearest Metro Diner, why can't I take you home? Five stars. It has earned my five stars with ease. I would give it more stars if the Yelp system would allow it. We were thoroughly impressed. Even though there was a 20 minute wait, there was ample parking. The hostess was cordial and welcoming. The runners and servers were pleasantly moving around the room with ease. Customers seemed markedly pleased. It was somewhat eerie. Like that scene from the Bee Movie where everything works too too well. We were placed on the list to wait, but found out that there were seats available at the bar. We took two and bypassed the wait. Good plan too! We were able to see all of the glorious, copious amounts of food coming out of the kitchen, and we had first row seat to the kitchen operations. It's an open kitchen. So it's free-for-all. What impressed me the most was the sheer efficiency of the entire diner's operation. Everyone seems to have either a single job or a small number of very important jobs. There's the guy who's responsible for the poached eggs. There's the guy who's responsible for scrambled eggs and omelettes. There's a lady who was handling the waffle stations. And my favorite: multiple fact checkers. There was a guy on the opposite side of the breakfast bar making sure that plates received that extra order of fried chicken or that hard-boiled egg or that extra side of fresh fruit. Then he would hand the plates over to the final fact checker who would review tickets before handing them off to runners. It appeared runners we're not responsible for a set of tables, but the entire dining room. This freed up the servers to give you personalized attention. Brilliant! The menu is a whopping mass of so many good things. Too many good things, really. In addition into the aforementioned menu items, they also have several different types of eggs Benedict, huevos rancheros, pancakes, croissant French toast and other sweet breakfast items, oatmeal, burgers and fish sandwiches - an upgrade from your typical greasy diner offerings. Based on what was coming out of the kitchen, it seems like the most popular items are the Benedicts, the pancakes, the waffles and the chicken. I was so pleased to roll myself out of the diner. I went with the Benedict. Decadent! Also, if you cannot decide between menu items, ask the server if you can order have orders of each. Food was more than adequate. It was superior. Hefty servings and sumptuous tastes. I get the feeling that most of what is prepared here is prepared from scratch. Bonus: they have a patio! Guy if you see this get up there....lol) they are only open from 6:30a.m. to 2:30 pm, so if you're trying to eat there in the morning, make sure you pack your patience because the line is out the door the min it opens. They have free coffee and water while you wait. I don't really remember what inside looked like because from the time we walked in, the waiters and waitresses kept us occupied with conversation. They have a decent size menu for a place that only serves breakfast and lunch. They offer a variety of food to cater to any pallet. So much has been said about Metro Diner. Honestly, I'm surprised to see negative reviews. The food, the service and the atmosphere are up there in one of Jax's top brunch spots. Wait times will be long. That's a guarantee. However, free coffee is available outside. Check plus. They told us we'd be 20 minutes, but the wait was closer to 30 minutes. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros. These were to die for. All the components, particularly the toppings and tortillas were stellar. My one beef was the chorizo sausage. Unfortunately, there wasn't any flavor other than the meat itself. One more thing. Prepare for leftovers! Prices may appear a bit high at first, but you are sure to take some home. And it's worth noting that although the wait times for seating are long, the food comes out fairly quickly.
