Had a terrific experience here today! Had lunch with a friend visiting from Dallas who had never been to Metro Diner. We arrived right as they were closing but the host kindly invited us in anyway. The server was equally gracious and never made us feel rushed--even when we were the last patrons there! And, of course, the food was outstanding. She had eggs benedict and I had the chicken and waffles. Both were delicious! I raved about Metro Diner to my friend and they did not disappoint. Challah Bread French Toast Breakfast Special. The French Toast was peppered with fresh banana and strawberry slices. Pleasant and efficient service on a busy morning provided a very good breakfast with eggs on the side. Our stop could have been much more pleasant if I hadn't had an emotional confrontation with a telephone pole in the parking lot. My tail-light and I agree the food is good, but damn those poles. Huge portions and really good diner food. We ate the corned beef hash, biscuits, pancakes, hash browns and potatoes. They were all really good. This is exactly what you would expect from a diner. The type of food that you dream about but rarely get. I loved their biscuits, hand made and still warm, I slathered it with butter and jam. The pancakes were nice and fluffy, ask for real maple syrup if you're a snob like me. They did serve with a syrup alternative but that isn't my style, it was an extra charge but I don't care. The pancakes were delicious and fluffy. My mom loves the hash browns here. She comes twice per week to get them and she wasn't wrong. This place is so bad for you health wise..but so good to you. We were looking forward to trying Metro Diner at a friend's recommendation and I believe got our hopes up going into the experience. We waited nearly 45 minutes for a table on a Saturday morning because the place was packed after being told it would only take 30 minutes. As soon as we were seated a friendly waitress greeted us to take our drink orders. Our service was at least consistently good through out our experience. We placed an order of biscuits and gravy with a side of eggs and hash browns, a 3 egg special scrambled with sausage, cheesy grits, and toast, and a blackened mahi mahi sandwich. The food was definitely good but overall fairly average. The eggs were cooked well but the grits with cheese simply had cheese on top and weren't truly cheesy grits as expected and were slightly runny. The mahi sandwhich had a good flavor but the bun was mediocre. The homemade chips was one of the best parts of the meal! Although this is my first review, it's my fourth time coming to Metro Diner. My previous visits left me full but I wasn't a fan. I could take it it leave it. I'm not sure if MD's changed or if I have but I'm a SHO NUFF FAN after the meal I had today. I ordered the Peach Yo Halla (dessert disguised as breakfast), my wonderful husband ordered the country fried steak, cheesiest grits and a pancake, we shared the shrimp and grits. Ok...the shrimp and grits are crack in a bowl covered in grits!! The item we got halved to share was the best thing on the table. You MUST try it!! My PYH was decadent, not too sweet, very flavorful and quite beautiful, to boot. I should have gotten the half portion to ensure a little less guilt (and gut) post meal. My wonderful husbands fried steak LOOKED like a work of art but the breaking was devoid of seasoning so it was really bland. The pancake was a pancake. First Watch still holds the title on pancakes for me. Our server was so sweet, very friendly, and very helpful. Other servers were also helpful and friendly. If there were a such thing as giving a half star, I'd give it 4.5. I'm coming back before I jump to five stars in light of my forgettable first three visits. I just gotta figure out what to eat next! The beach version has finally calmed down after the "Grand Opening craze." They are usually awesome. On this visit they offered a Pittsburgh Eggs Benedict. I've had the Pittsburgh sandwich here before, a wonderful pastrami sandwich with slaw and fries, like the famous Primanti Bros, so this was a no brainer. My husband opted for Huevos Ranchero, a huge plate of Eggs with black beans, onions and peppers, salsa on a bed of huge tortilla chips covered in cheese. The burgers are always tasty. And don't miss the diner classics like meatloaf and pot roast. Just be prepared to wait. But it is well worth it. read more

As for my meal, I tried the famous "fried chicken and waffles". It's not a combination that I would have ever put together myself, but it was delicious. The portion was huge! I wasn't able to eat it all there, so I had a hearty share to bring home. The chicken was moist and flavorful, the waffles were light and cooked to perfection -- add the strawberry butter topping and syrup -- yum! Metro Diner is a place that I always go into expecting to be fantastic and always leave a little disappointed. My most recent visit was on Memorial Day. Now I don't care that they were super busy and we had to wait almost an hour for a table. I expected that. Even with the crowd, our service was great. Our waitress was attentive and polite. She seemed like she truly enjoyed being there which is always a plus. My problem was the food. It was ok at best. I ordered the Seafood Omelette special b/c the waitress had said it was really good and that everyone loves it when it's on the menu. Well, I love seafood and omelettes but the two combined in this instance were not good. Nothing about this dish tasted fresh, including the eggs. I feel like I should have known better when I ordered it but I went with the suggestion of my server who was completely wrong. read more

I'm convinced that you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Seated rather fast and our drink orders were taken. Our waitress was very friendly. I got the fried chicken plate, IT WAS HUGE! The chicken was super moist and flavorful, a huge side of mashed potatoes- I wasn't a huge fan of them, but mix the chicken and gravy with them and it's delicious. One of the girls I was with got the San Fran Benedict- it's definitely on my try list. It looked so good and fresh. I've been to the parent location in San Marco and was super excited when I heard they were putting a place at the beach. Definitely waited a couple months before braving the crazy weekend crowds. I tried the grilled cheese with an order of cheese grits. The grits were tasty. Not too runny & just the right amount of cheese. I did have to add a little butter, salt & pepper, but after a little doctoring, I enjoyed every spoonful. The sandwich was perfectly toasted, but between the generous amount of butter in on the bread and the natural oils in the cheese, the sandwich bordered on a little greasy for my taste. It won't stop me from ordering it again, but it's not going to be in the regular rotation. While I have yet to try the French toast, I have had the shrimp & grits and they were sooo good. I brought have of them home and had them for dinner that night. So do be careful what you order. Sharing isn't a bad strategy. read more

They have daily breakfast specials (Today's is River City Hash, which is two eggs and hashbrowns that are cooked with peppers and onions topped with hollandaise sauce). I was in the mood for an all American breakfast and ordered the Bissel, adding strawberries to my pancake and onions to my hashbrowns; so delicious. The sunny-side eggs were perfectly cooked aka not under with see-through whites, nor over with hard centers--just perfect!! The limeade is sugary but a nice way to end a big meal if you have a sweet tooth like me ;) . They keep the coffee flowing throughout your meal and it's always fresh. The omelets are HUGE and STUFFED with the toppings, so be prepared! Waitresses and waiters are very friendly and attentive despite this place always being busy. I love seeing the kitchen staff work on the meals for the morning; you can tell everyone here loves their job. Come hungry! After breakfast, go for a walk on the beach to help the digestive process! This place is close enough to the Beach, all you have to do is cross the street. Tip: get here after the morning rush for less of a wait, around 10 is best! read more

Love this place! Always crowded, so be sure to allow about 20-30 minutes wait prior to getting seated. However, if you go on a week-day, there may not be such a wait. 99% of the time there is always a long wait on the week-ends. 3 locations in town, Hendricks, Mandarin and Beaches.... and this is the case for all of them!! The server provided excellent service. I had a Western omelet. The eggs didn't taste real. I don't like when someone makes my omelet with the eggs being overly browned. This one was the total opposite in that it didn't have any brown on it, like it was fake. The omelet just wasn't good. It was bland and not nearly enough cheese. The absolute worst was they put salsa from a jar on top of my omelette. Salsa from a jar is disgusting, I had to take my napkin and attempt to get it off. Come on Metro make the effort and have fresh salsa. I'll never forget when I stopped in a restaurant in Starke and ordered chips and salsa and they brought me chips with salsa from a jar. I absolutely sent that I ordered a Bloody Mary and it didn't taste good either. It had one stalk of celery and that was it, none of the other ingredients. I've never had a yucky Bloody Mary until that day. I took a few sips and wasted it. The server was kind enough to allow me to try a sample of the shrimp and grits. This is not the traditional shrimp and grits. I didn't like it. They didn't have any shrimp to sample in the shrimp and grits, which I understood when the server explained how they are packaged individually, but at the same time it's kind of pointless to offer a sample without any shrimp to try. The grits that came with my omelet were delicious. I went here after working from 3 pm - 7 am as a nurse and was tired and hungry. I probably should have said something to my server but I didn't want to complain about everything he brought me or wait for a new order of something else. I was very tired and wanted to go home and sleep. I was looking forward to some of their amazing food. They dropped the ball on this breakfast though. .I had an omelet last week at Penman Diner (sorry Metro) and it was excellent. I'll go back but never order a drink or omelet again. Poor experience at this location. We appeared to be a inconvenience to each employee. We were notified our table was ready. Then were told to find the table outside (which wasn't available). They never left there hostess stand. Just pointed outside. The waitress, Morgan K. was short with us. She was not around much during our experience. We had to ask other employees for napkins and condiments. She dropped our bill off and immediately left despite how I was handing her my card at that time. Carol had an omelet which was good as well. We got in just in time since the place crowded up shortly after we arrived. Parking is tight - only a small lot off of the always busy 3rd Street. Props for the corned beef hash which was certainly fresh, but I didn't care much for the shrimp and grits. They skimped on the shrimp and the grits were mediocre fried squares covered in a very heavy gravy. Just wasn't a fan. Fortunately the chicken and waffles were decent, I could tell they battered it there. Can't say I'll be back next time I'm in jax beach. We enjoyed Metro Diner for the first time today. The menu has a great selection of breakfast delectibles including the monte cristo sandwich on the special board. A breakfast fave sure to clog the arteries! We went with the Yo Hala and the Huevos Rancheros. The former is french toast on steroids with a banana cream filling topped with a blueberry strawberry compote. Wow! Not too sweet and incredibly flavorful. The huevos were like having breakfast nachos. A great mix of flavors and spice. Both dishes were huge - come with an appetite. This is not a cheap $2.99 diner. It is imaginative breakfast food, good portions at a fair price. Our server, Sara H was friendly, enthusiastic, and very attentive to our needs. Thumbs up for awesome service!
