So expensive for a diner. Nothing special about it, so far as I can tell. I once ordered a vegetable soup here. I asked what was in it and the waiter was not forthcoming. I think he said something along the lines of, "it's good. You'll like it." My bowl of soup arrived (well before my fellow diners' meals even though that's all I ordered) and it was swimming with allergens (white beans)! So I ordered the chicken soup instead and asked to be served along with everyone else. Having practically grown up at the Metro, maybe I am a little biased. Still, I am definitely a Metro girl for life. Yes it is a NYC diner, which can have pretty bland generic food, but you really have to know what to order at the metro. The greek food is incredible, obviously. My favorite is the chicken souvlaki, but the mediterranean platter and mousaka are good too. Pasta is also good, sandwiches are pretty good, and breakfast is just perfect in that greasy diner way. Metro Diner is a great place for good food in the heart of the Upper West Side. During my trip to New York, we stumbled upon this place looking for some breakfast to get us through the day. The diner is clean with that diner-type flair, the menu was expansive, and the food tasty, with fast service. Our drinks were always full and we never went without service. Not once did we feel pressured to leave when we were done. Metro Diner is a great example of eating well without breaking the bank in New York. I live nearby, so I want to like this place, but I have been consistently disappointed. Service is perfectly reasonable and prompt when I am there, but the food is merely OK. I was going there fairly often and ordering a hamburger for dinner, but it was pretty tasteless, consistently. One night I ordered breakfast (corned beef hash, scrambled eggs, and an English muffin) at about 9:30, when it was not crowded. I think there was a problem in the kitchen, because it took a while. The English muffin was cold and stiff, clearly having been toasted a while ago. I like my scrambled eggs pretty dry, but forgot to specify so was prepared for undercooked eggs by my standard, but they were so dry even I disliked them. The hash was OK. Oddly enough, the hash browns were pretty good--I like them well-cooked, and these were. In general, I have found them to be OK at best. There are several other similar restaurants in the neighborhood, and at least one of them is better. (I'm going to be trying the others.) read more

I love this place. It has the quintessential New York diner atmosphere, with great food. Huge variety of dishes, huge portions (though sometimes I wish they weren't so big - I tend to eat everything on my plate). The wait and bussing staff are very friendly, fast, and accomodating. They'll fix anything that's wrong asap, with a smile; not that there's usually any problem. I've forgotten to ask for french fries instead of home fries or for grilled onions instead of fresh ones and they've flown the plate back to the kitchen and gotten me what I yearned for before my dining companions could put sugar in their coffee. The prices are excellent. It's a wonderful place to people-watch or, off-hours, a comfortable site for reading the paper. read more

God I love this place! It feels like home. The service is excellent. They have every food you could ever want and it's all cooked to perfection. Now they have a wonderfully clean and efficient set up for pick-up and delivery in the covid era. They do a nice job here. I went on Saturday, a little later in the morning, and the place was packed. The line went out to the sidewalk, but the host (maitre d'...?) was calm and composed, and had everyone seated -- from a chart which apparently was in his head -- within five minutes. Breakfast was diner-typical (I had the Italian Connection omelette, and my "date" had a frittata), and both orders were done well, and delivered promptly by our very personable waitress. My only problem -- and it's my problem with ALL diners -- is that they don't take coffee orders immediately, especially on weekend mornings. This is just a personal pet gripe of mine, so ignore it if it sounds overly picky. In their defense, our coffee and OJ were brought quickly, as were unsolicited refills. So this is my first review of the place despite having eaten there before. However, after today I won't be going there again. The food is just so-so. Hey, it's a diner, what do you expect. However, I do expect a crazy thing called service. As in, if I have to actually get out of my chair, when I'm at the counter no less, and walk over to where the coffee is to ask for a refill, that's bad. What's unacceptable is do that and still be ignored. I'm sure someone will say I was rude before hand but no, I wasn't, I wasn't even rude afterward. Stopped by this past weekend for breakfast. Given the state of most diners on the UWS, we were surprised with how pleasant it was. The atmosphere is homey, vintage, a traditional no-frills American diner. Cream, butter and smuckers jam comes in self serve packets. I know it's breakfast, brunch, diner food, so I don't expect bougie but the quality isn't that great at the price with most mains being $12+. The menu is extensive but perhaps they'd do better at paring it down and nailing a few dishes. The food tastes really bland and flat in flavor. Waiter was fairly nice and refilled my coffee quickly. They were fast at getting the food out quickly with no errors after we ordered. I didn't experience any sourpuss waiters, he was quiet, not too pushy, and nice. I ordered the special lunch, goat cheese, and asparagus egg white omelette. The portion size is generous with a heaping pile of sweet potato fries. Ingredients tasted dull and not fresh or flavorful. The best part was the goat cheese filing inside, savory light but very salty and perhaps too much of. My friend's frittata seemed overcooked and similarly flat as well. Diners can be really good. I love salads and diners tend to have very big and very flavorful salads. Metro Diner has been around for a very long time. The service is not that great. Late Sunday morning the line is out the door but turnover is fast enough that the wait wasn't even 10 minutes. Portions seem reasonable for the price. Don't come here. A month ago I came here and ordered an omelet. It came with a baked potato. Totally unwashed. Dirt and all. Un edible and would make someone sick if they ate it. I recently went there and ordered chicken Marsala. My gf ordered an omelette. My Marsala had hair in it. Not a little piece but a whole clump. It looked like there was a dead animal in my food! All they offered was to make a new one. Still charged me for everything. My gfs omelet came with sour cream for the potato (which was mayo!) and they put mushrooms in it. Which she didn't order. Again. All we got was an "sorry about that". Never again..... It's just a diner and your in NYC. Walk a couple blocks and go to a good one. read more

I've come a couple times with larger groups (my family) and found the food is delicious, comes out quickly and with really good service. The prices are a bit higher than I'm used to in a diner, but this is the West Side. I could fill my kids' tummies with a couple well-chosen menu selections, so that makes up for some of the cots. Do yourself a favor and avoid the burgers at all costs. They may have something else on the menu that's less awful, but I got the chili burger and it was atrocious. Why bother asking how I want it cooked (I said medium) if they're going to cook it until it's just burnt gristle completely devoid of all juice and flavor? I'm a person that almost always cleans my plate, and I couldn't even stomach half of it. Sitting here on the train, it feels like a giant rock slowly moving through my digestive system. Fiancé got the Lumberjack breakfast and he said it was very "meh," but he was able to eat it all. Only reason this isn't 1 star. Service was terrible too. He came by with the check (after we sat there 10 min with the plates pushed aside and our phones out, clearly done) and asked if I wanted to box up the rest. I said no, because it was way too overcooked and just bad. He shrugged and mumbled "aw.. sorry" ...thanks? This is one of my favorite diners in town. I've been going here for years. Only once have I had an issue, and that was with the service (and I've not seen that member of the waitstaff since). The food is good, solid and plentiful, just what you expect from a diner. Burgers are terrific (especially the Greek one), if you order fries extra crisp they come that way, and the staff is friendly. What more can you ask? The diners pretty big, I use to go here every weekend with my family and i was never really disappointed with the portion sizes or the food. The waiters are kind, and always on top of their game and most of them know my father so we're treated very well. I basically only know their breakfast menu and I have to admit, its not the best diner price, but it's worth your meal. It's always busy, but the staff never seems to complain and It always seems to be packed on weekends, do be careful with the floor they often get me dizzy because their checker boards :) My dad loves the egg benedict, I'm not the biggest fan of them, maybe what throws me off is the flavor of the sauce. I give it 4 stars for always having fresh salads, hot and tasty soups, crispy fries, sizzling frittatas, and delicious daily specials. Note: the balboa roast beef sandwich is my favorite special yet. It's roast beef and cheese served on fresh garlic bread with a side of dipping homemade gravy. The staff is all friendly and the service is always good. My only complaint would be the prices. This diner is out of this world! I come here every Sunday with some relatives just to eat and talk BS. Well, that's not really why we come here. The real reason, is their french toast! These french toast come with a savory sweet ham, that makes a perfect combination! I don't even need to order bacon (but I still do ;-) I seriously think this is the best diner to have breakfast in the city. The coffee here is great, and the waiters are on point with the refills. I also come here to cure any hangovers that I may have. This diner's remedy for any hangover, are their lumberjack pancakes, which also come with the savory ham, eggs, and bacon. After eating this gigantic meal, prepare yourself to go back to sleep! (It is very fulfilling!!!) Since the new year entered, I have a streak of 12th consecutive Sundays coming here, and I'm trying to make it to my 52nd! Wish me luck ;-) read more

The Metro Diner is a good choice for breakfast, simple meals, and big groups where people all picky. Everything I've had there has been good, and the service is always fast. I came here with a group on New Years Day for brunch, and we seated and served very quickly, despite the crowds. I would give it four stars, but it's a little bit too expensive for a diner. This place is great in the morning to grab a traditional diner breakfast. they have some solid combos for breakfast. My favorite is the two egg combo which comes with two eggs, I doubt I needed to stay that, hash browns and 2 pieces of sausage, ham, or bacon. The coffee is good and the wait staff will constantly refill your coffee, water, and do anything you need. they are super accommodating! I give this place a 4 because it is a legit diner and they have awesome diner food.
