We've been wanting to try to Metro diner for quite some time. so on our anniversary weekend and our time off visiting other places we decide to give it a try. I must say it did not disappoint as for most of their reviews they are an awesome place. Outstanding service and even better food. My wife had to meatloaf mashed potatoes and green beans she said it was one of the best she's had in a long time. Upon studying their reviews I noticed one of their favorite dishes was chicken and waffles. So I decided to get a chicken and waffles a try and then I will tell you you better be hungry when you go. Visited Metro Diner for the first time, we were in town on vacation from Texas. I must say Metro Diner is hands down one of the best breakfast places I've ever been to! First off their staff is so warm and welcoming, it's almost unbelievable. Our waitress was a young girl named Monica and all I could think was WOW if I owned a restaurant I would want to hire 10 Monica's! They really make you feel at home, all the staff we came into contact with were great. They have several menu options. I decided to give the Eggs Benedict a try and it exceeded my expectations. I generally won't order Eggs Benedict in restaurants because the hollandaise sauce is never great but Metro Diner has it down! Ahhh Metro Diner! Love this place! The first one I went to was in Jacksonville and it was super busy the entire time. This location is no different. I can't even recommend a specific time to come because you will likely have a wait from open to close. Regardless, you want a solid meal so you just wait lol. On this trip I got the breakfast pie. It was hearty but could have used much more seasoning. I ended up adding salt and pepper to be able to enjoy it. I also got grits which were pretty good, no complaints. I probably won't order the breakfast pie again but wouldn't discourage others from eating it. We had about a 30-40 minute wait on a Sunday at 1130. There is not much room to wait so some people walked next door to the bakery to grab items while they waited. Metro Diner is pretty good. They serve mimosas and bloody marys which sees out of place but is nice to have as an option. This is a no frills diner. It's modern and clean, and they have some limited time offer things and specials but nothing out of the ordinary. Service is friendly and attentive. I was really bummed to find out they ave a limited menu since covid started and got rid of the corned beef hash :( They will split checks and you can scan a QR code on your receipt and pay on your phone, that's pretty cool. We've now been twice, so I'm ready for a review. The challenge is, the first visit merits one star, while the second merits the three I'm going to give them. Our first visit was a slightly later dinner on a weeknight. The restaurant was only about half full (or a little less), so we were seated immediately. The waiter came by promptly and took our drink order. Since this was our first experience, we needed a few minutes. We got way more than just a few minutes and had to look without our drinks. So let me just get this out of the way. I don't expect white linen service at a diner, but this was just inattentive from start to finish. As for the food, I got a Monte Cristo (haven't had one in a very long time). It had all the right components and was a huge sandwich, but I can't fathom how they managed to have one end burned and the other end undercooked. A guy at the table next to us got Chicken Parmesan, which looked good, so that's what Lay ordered. It was a huge portion, and the guy left over half of his. We wondered about why he didn't get a box (and there are a number of good reasons) but decided after Lay got his it was because the guy didn't want to eat the rest. Lay found it soggy and the sauce not very good. He too left nearly half his. We went again on Saturday morning. I guess we were there at just the right time. while busy, we got a seat immediately and were waited on promptly. Neither of us has ever had chicken and waffles, so Lay went for that, and I had croissant french toast with bacon (I had the option of regular or crispy. I specified regular, but that was pretty crispy, so I'm glad I didn't ask for crispy, but it was fine.) My serving was two croissants, so was a large portion, and was fine. I think they could have soaked the croissants a little longer. Lay's chicken was excellent and very juicy, and the waffle very good. I now see why people like chicken and waffles, and how it's a signature dish for Metro Diner. I thought the prices were a little high, but I'm sure they justify that with the portion sizes. I'd prefer slightly smaller portions and a lower price for the quality, which was, at best, average overall, and not great the first visit. Parking will be an issue if they are busy, and as Tampa's started to allow, businesses to meet their "parking spaces" requirements by making most of the space "compact car" spaces, which means they paint the lines so close together, if cars are inside the lines side-by-side, you can't get in or out. Just keep that in mind...only come if you own a very small car. read more

There is something about a restaurant that has the word "diner." You just know the food is going to be great and the style of the place is going to be very homey. This morning my husband and I decided to stop by and surprisingly we only waited about 2 minutes before we were sat. Once we were sat our server came over and greeted us right away with waters. She went over the menu with us as well and let us know some of the things they were known for. My husband ordered a mimosa and got the sausage gravy biscuit breakfast with scrambled eggs. I ordered the half waffle breakfast which came with a half waffle and I added strawberries and bananas, scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast. A ton of food at a great price. I couldn't even finish my breakfast, but my husband sure did finish his. This place is so cute and right off Kennedy. We constantly go to the Cuban cafe right next door and couldn't wait to try this place for breakfast. I am so glad we finally decided to stop by. The food is great and so is the service. Lovely diner. The food is good and the portions are huge. I am glad that they opened up a location on Kennedy because to be honest I wouldn't have gone to the St.Pete location. We came hungry and ordered so much food but the portions are so big that we weren't able to finish it all. We ordered a waffle with fruit on top (which we devoured completely), a Philly cheesesteak with fries, a side of onion rings, and the club sandwich. Came during lunch time on a Thursday and enjoyed some meatloaf. Service was perfect 5 and overall food was 4 in general. Noise level is moderate and seating is nice. Parking was easy too! This might just become one of my new favorite spots in Tampa! Went on Labor Day around 10:30am and was told it was a 40 minute wait, so be prepared if you're going on a weekend during the morning/brunch hours. They'll take your name and phone number and text you when it's your turn. We managed to snag a couple seats at the high top bar stool area within about 15 minutes which is first come first serve. Despite it being busy and crowded inside, all the staff were very friendly and service was great. The open kitchen was really neat and I enjoyed seeing different dishes being made. We ordered the Huevos Rancheros and the Red, White & Blue Yo Hala. LOVED the Huevos Rancheros and it was a hefty portion. I will definitely be ordering that again. The Yo Hala was like a French toast stuffed with strawberry cream cheese and topped with strawberries and blueberries. We were a little overwhelmed with it because it looked like a dessert, but it was surprisingly not too sweet and we managed to finish it. All the portions were huge and the prices were reasonable. Metro Diner is one of must go to restaurants that has a great diner feel to it. It's original location was established in Jacksonville, Fl and they've just recently opened a location here in Tampa (and by recently, I mean just this past Tuesday. So new in fact, that they had trainers watching over the new staff to make sure everything runs smoothly. They are pretty much known for their chicken and waffles dish, which is what my wife gets all the time and runs about $15. It comes with 4 fried pieces of chicken with a Belgian waffle and strawberry butter and hot sauce maple syrup to top it off. The chicken is juicy and the waffle has a slight crunch on the outside with a light and fluffy inside. This combination brings an explosion of flavor to your mouth with every bite. Another one of my go to dishes is the Charleston Shrimp and Grits which runs you about $16. It's two specially made grit cakes stacked together in a creamy, cheesy sauce mixed with shrimp, andouille sausage, green peppers, and green onions and of course topped with bacon bits. It's a pretty big portion so come hungry! If you're a fan of shrimp and grits you definitely have to try their version. It wasn't as crowded as we thought it would be for brunch on a Sunday morning so our wait was less than 10 minutes (we've definitely waited longer at other metro diners). Wow- I can't believe it's here in Tampa! Been to two locations and so happy to see this is close to home. Normally we go to the Village Inn with the kids, but not now! :) A little small as far as space. Would have liked to see a bigger indoor dining area. There is outdoor seating which is nice and under a covered walkway. I am sure this will be a frequent spot for us to eat. The value for the price is outstanding. The wait was zero - busy but seated right away. Clean and efficient. We had the braised tips special and the big city burger. The fried jalapeños added just the right amount of heat to the burger. Metro Diner is FINALLY open in South Tampa!! I've been to the one in Gainesville quite a few times and was just too lazy to drive over to St. Pete ever since I moved back to Tampa. Fun fact: Breakfast is served all day! We went at 5:30 on a Sunday evening and the place was basically empty, which is awesome but I'm sure won't last in South Tampa. Metro Diner definitely has an old diner feel with wood booths and bar stools right at the counter where you can watch all your food being made. This location has a small outdoor area too. This particular time we went with the Shrimp & Grits and the Holy Davoli burger (a burger between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches). Both were amazing! The Shrimp & Grits uses fried grit cakes instead of your traditional grits which is a nice surprise. All of the wait staff were very attentive, although many are still in training, grabbing our trash, refilling our drinks, and making sure we had everything we needed. Not on this occasion, but I've had the Chicken & Waffles (really what they're known for), Breakfast Pie, and the Crab Cake Benedict all of which were amazing. I've yet to have a bad meal! This is my first at this Tampa location, however I have been to the original location in Jacksonville about 3 times already. The grand opening was about 1 week ago so I'm pretty excited to visit this place. I ordered my all time favorites - chicken and waffles. This is not your typical chicken and waffles that you would get else where. It comes with 4 big pieces of chicken and 4 pieces of waffles. Chicken is very juicy in the inside and crunchy on the outside. Waffles are soft, airy and dusted with powdered sugar. Strawberry butter is what makes it unique. It also serves with spicy syrup on the side. It was also a short wait (5mins), no long line waiting outside like other location. Lots of parking on the weekend. You must go and visit MD asap. Something has changed here. We were served a drink in a dirty cup and everyone behind the counter either had their nose out of their masks or their mask was on their chin. I was surprised to see the manager present with that going on. Is it lack of knowledge on how to properly wear a mask? Is it a relaxed face mask policy? Not sure, I just know what I experienced. The reviews were spot on. Food was great, service was great and the prices were reasonable. I had the 'Brissell Breakfast' (pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast and choice of hash browns or grits). My wife had chicken and waffles and let me tell you, the portion was huge. Literally, half a chicken and a waffle. Both meals were served quickly and were absolutely delicious. We both cleaned our plates except for some of the chicken which we bought home. The also offered mimosas if that's your thing. Will definitely add this place to our breakfast rotation.
