Metro diner is my new favorite breakfast place in Tampa. Everything here has been great tasting. Wait staff is always attentive and offers great service. The one constant I order with every meal is grits. The grits are always creamy and good. The fries are really good too. We have never had to wait too long for service. Everything about this establishment is great. From the time I walked through the door and exiting, the experience was great. I went for breakfast and not only did Rashidi keep my coffee topped-off, but the food was delicious. I chose the meat lovers bowl, and opted out of the hash browns. Rashidi was generous and added extra eggs for the substitution. That's great service. While you sit at the counter, you get a view of the kitchen works and all chefs were busy and attentive to the patron's requests. So I'm the show me type, ya know the see it to believe it type. Pulling up to this joint I see a line a folks sitting and waiting outside in the dead heat of a Saturday Tampa late morning. That was the first sign that the food was good lol nobody waits in the heat to eat unless it's Short wait and we are seating and this place os jumping. Music going, waitresses we're busy and smiling. What I liked the most was the open kitchen right upfront so we can all see the food being cooked loved to see it. Okay on to the food. I ordered chicken and Waffles and I wasn't ready at all. Had this on my list to try for quite some time. Finally got around to coming for a breakfast date with my hubs. Joined the waitlist on their website since I didn't know how long of a wait it'd be. Waitlist said about 5 minute wait. When we arrived, we were greeted immediately and offered to sit anywhere we wanted since there weren't many customers. Once seated our waitress greeted us and took our order. Food was out quick. I ordered the Protein breakfast which is scrambled eggs and choice of 2 meats (sausage patty, sausage link, bacon or Canadian bacon). I chose double bacon. You can also get your eggs anyway you want them and not limited to just scrambled. Hubs got the new steak breakfast bowl. I also got a bowl of gravy. Overall it was just ok. Nothing to rave about other than service. The food was bland and the bacon was more greasy and not crispy. Disappointed with the food since I had been looking forward to coming here for so long. Definite diner feel and atmosphere. Was immediately led to my table for one table and greeted by my server, Lena, with big smile. Took my drink order and gave a few minutes to decide on what to eat from the medium-size but packed full of tasty selections menu. Beauty is, you can order lunch or have breakfast for lunch! Now I like breakfast for dinner, something about eating it for lunch, not brunch, just didn't seem right. Was tempted to try the fish & chips. Every Friday in fall you can add a salad to the fish and chips plate for nominal fee. I also noticed that the chicken pot pie must be good too. I heard 6-7 orders called back at the window. But I went with the spicy honey chicken and fries. It was so good! Just the right amount of heat and drizzle of honey. Bird was hot and juicy and tender. Restaurant was well started and loved the fall look they generated. Very good too be able to watch food being cooked. Place is clean overall but staff needed to get under tables...at least the next to me where I'm guessing a child...at just In think it was a child apparently had the Mac&cheese for lunch. I wanted to meet a friend that I haven't seen in a few months for breakfast one morning. We debated the usual great spots, but I noticed "Metro Diner" on some random clickbait list of best breakfasts in Tampa. Since neither of us had been here, we decided to meet here. I saw 4.7 stars on my mapping app and 4.5 on Yelp, so I thought maybe this was a great new place. I didn't realize until later that this is a chain. I'd put the food quality far below IHOP or Denny's if we're comparing boring chain breakfast restaurants. But my overall dining experience was one of the strangest I've had in a long time. My friend and I met and we seated right away. I had to use the bathroom, but met my friend at the table, and our server stopped immediately to take our drink order. I got a water and my friend got a hazelnut coffee. That arrived immediately thereafter, our server asked if we were ready, and we hadn't even looked at the menu, so we said no we need a couple more minutes. The server checked one minute later to see if we were ready, and we weren't. She said no problem, and left. Since my friend and I hadn't seen each other in a couple months, we had a lot to talk about and catch up on. We chatted for a long time, until we realized we hadn't seen the server in a while. It was actually 50 minutes from the time we sat down, so about 45 minutes without any staff checking on us. Catching up was great, but we were hungry, and thought it was very strange that nobody had checked on us in 45 minutes. I have never sat at a table and been ignored for 45 minutes before ordering at a restaurant ever in my life. We flagged down an employee cleaning a table and asked her to tell our server that we were ready to order. We saw her talking to the servers in the opposite corner (including the one who got our drinks). A different server arrived to take our orders. We thought that was strange since our first server was still working and serving other tables. We even thought... did she just forget about us? Was there something she didn't like about us, and she did not want to be our server anymore? Did she not like our conversation? We were talking politics, so did she overhear us and not agree and now refusing to talk to us? It was altogether very strange. So, after this different server took our order with an ipad, our food came in less than 4 minutes. I chose the 3 egg breakfast, scrambled, home fries, bacon, and a biscuit and my friend ordered the pancakes. I was incredibly underwhelmed by the food. Each item has an asterisk with a note at the bottom "Cooked to order." It did not taste cooked to order. The texture and temperature of my meal tasted like everything was precooked a while ago and spooned onto my plate from a buffet line and then brought out. The eggs were strangely rubbery, like a high content of powdered mix eggs rather than actual cracked eggs. I attached the picture of my eggs. Tell me those don't look like they were scooped from a tray of powdered reconstituted eggs. The bacon was warm and oily and not crispy, again like it had been sitting in a buffet serving tray. The potatoes were flavorless. I tried my friends pancakes and they also did not taste freshly made. They tasted like they had been sitting out, kept warm for a while, then plated. The service was really strange with the 45 minute wait and the change in servers. The food was incredibly boring and subpar. At least at Dennys, I can see the person cooking it in the back after I ordered it. There wasn't much ambiance in the restaurant. And then I found out later that it was promoted by Guy Fieri and that's it's claim to fame. Perhaps he promoted a version of this place before it became franchised and served everything precooked. They were a little busy when I arrived, but they were able to handle and accommodate everyone well. I ordered a waffle combo which came with eggs twice with meat and a choice aside. Guy Fieri visited this place and now the place is more popular than ever. The fried chicken is supposed to be amazing. I try not to eat a lot of fried foods but once in a blue moon I indulge. Meatloaf and Philly cheesesteaks are terrific. My friend had the chef salad which I understand is not available at all Metro Diners. All good looks and tastes great and service is excellent. One thing I appreciate at any restaurant when dining alone is the Hostess comment of "Just one". Seems strange to greet a customer staring with the insult of "Just". I was pretty impressed with this place. We came on a Saturday morning around 10:30 AM. It was just two of us and we were seated within 10 minutes of walking in. Our server took a little bit to get to our table but it was fine because we just ended up putting our drinks and food in at the same time. They have A LOT of options on the menu. I ended up getting the spicy honey chicken biscuit with hash browns and was really pleased. Everything was very tasty and perfect portions. You also cannot get a better deal. But it's a new year, so I deviated from my regular breakfast to have sausage gravy and biscuits! Let me tell you, it was GOOD! I can't believe it was my first time having this meal. We were out on the town early so we wanted to start our day right with some breakfast, so we stopped by metro diner we got inside and luckily there was no wait so we were seated outside, (our preference), the weather was beautiful! Our waitress was super kind my son has gotten the hang of ordering our drinks so she was very patient and sweet to him while he ordered.. couple minutes go by and a this point we all knew what we were getting so we told my son our orders and she was ready to take it all down luckily it wasn't to complicated. She got everything right and headed off to the kitchen while we were waiting we played some games on the kids coloring page and not very long after our food started to arrive, everything looked great except my hollandaise sauce for my meal was fine had weird clumps that didn't taste good, which I ended up scraping off but the overall taste was good. The kids waffle and grilled cheeses were both a hit and my husband omelette was in his words perfection. Received the drinks and not once did we get offered a refill. I had to tell the waiter 2 times to get my grits from under the heat light after our food had already come out 30 minutes prior. The grits were flavorless and chunky. Never had grits so awful from any other metro diner. Then let's talk about the chicken and waffles... I don't know how old the grease was the chicken had been fried in but you could tell it needed to be changed. The chicken was dry and tasted old. Very disappointed since this is my go to meal. My husband had Sheppard pie and it had flavor but was soupy. So runny and strange textured. Won't order again. My son's chicken salad was the same as the fried chicken. Tasted like old grease. These guys know how to do breakfast! It gets really busy on the weekends, so he prepared to wait if you arrive during prime time. They have lots of seating inside and outside. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table on a Sunday at 11:00am. Our server was very friendly (all staff seemed that way) and quickly too our order of two omelettes, garden salad, and sliced avocado. The food was outstanding!
