I met Chef Esdras Ochoa the 1st week he opened the place and I know this is not up to his standards or reputation. First and foremost , the food quality was extremely poor. The preparation was not the usual. They are giving much bigger portions but the flavor was lacking. I ordered a chicken and shrimp taco. They used to grill the chicken and the shrimp this time the chicken was sauted and the shrimp appeared to be boiled. The texture and taste was completely off. The salsas were bland. Salsa bar was available. Not much stood out. I personally had the mexicali burrito and it lacked substance. More on the liquidy/mushy side which is not preferred. I've come to Mexicali a few times and it's always a very solid choice. I've had burritos here but most recently I had their fish tacos which were crazy good! I would definitely recommend! It's a small casual spot with great service. They have both inside and outside seating. A great salsa and condiment bar inside as well. Everyone in Los Angeles has "their Taco spot" and Mexicali Taco is definitely mine, after having been coming by here and there for going on 10 years. Used to always get the brick sized Mexicali Burrito with Carne Asada, but after trying out more of their menu over time, I'd have to say my favorites are the Baja Style Fish Tacos and the Vampiro Quesadilla packed with garlic sauce and Al Pastor. The Fish Tacos though. Each one is really more like x2, with a huge piece of perfectly fried fish and an extra tortilla so you can easily make that second taco happen. The Vampiro Quesadilla goes with it perfectly because it's on a different end of the taste spectrum, it will also fill you up. The Agua Frescas are also really good, made fresh in house. They've got the usuals like Horchata, Jamaica, and Watermelon - but the one to look for is Spinach Pineapple, I'll bet you'll want another. Service is always friendly, and the kitchen is fast. Nice setting with both indoor and outdoor tables. I've also never seen it completely packed, I'm sure many of the nearby residents take orders to-go. read more

The parking lot has several picnic tables with umbrellas, eat outside to take in the sites. I tend to get the vampiro and taco. Vampiro is a quesadilla with a garlic sauce on a flour tortilla that can be dressed up at the salad bar. To balance the carne asada in the vampiro, I order the veggie taco. This was both my first and last time eating there. I ordered a burrito to go and waited over 30 minutes to receive my food. Several customers who ordered after me and were dining in received their meals before I did. Parking in the area is terrible, and expecting a quick pickup, I parked in a red zone. By the time I returned, I had received a parking ticket. The burrito itself was disappointing, bland, with meat that contained a significant amount of fat. Been going here for a decade, love the food, but the delivery options are terrible. You are unable to modify or say change the tortilla to flour. Some options aren't even available on one app while they are on another. And biggest let down is they don't provide any of the condiments that define their food. It seems like a small thing, but getting a plain taco isn't the same. The restaurant should include the condiments (onions, limes, etc) and not count on the drivers to do so, it would be a big difference if this was all in the bag and provided. We stopped by Mexicali Taco & Co with friends before the Dodgers game and unfortunately had a disappointing experience. We ordered a fish taco, two shrimp tacos, an asada vampiro, and a Cali Burrito. When our food came out, several items were wrong--my friend received a quesadilla instead of the vampiro, and another friend was given two fish tacos instead of shrimp. When we let the cashier/server know, she didn't apologize or make an effort to correct the order. The food itself wasn't much better. My fish taco was soggy instead of crispy, and the Cali Burrito was mostly filled with fries and lacked flavor. When we asked about the flan we had already paid for, the server responded with "Do you want it?"--which felt dismissive, especially if we had already order it. I came for lunch so the lunch crowd was there. Parking can be cumbersome as it is metered. However, I think this has to do with the time you come. I wanted to have a taco and try the cachetada so combo 2 was the perfect choice. They do not skimp on the meat which is nice. The lunch combo comes with a drink and some chips and I was stuffed. I enjoyed the chorizo taco and I got asada cachetada. Cachetada comes on a crispy tortilla with cheese and the meat on top. I'd come back! On a rare choice, my girlfriend tried this place after eating Guisados as my want for street tacos wasn't satisfied. We came in and ordered a carne asada taco that was juicy and flavorful. I also had a fish taco that was packed with creme sauce and plenty of cabbage. My girlfriend got her dream of a torta with pickled jalapenos and a side of pickled red onions and carrots. She was put in the right spot and loved this spot. I also got beans and rice that were really good and noticed that it was definitely more for two people to enjoy.
