Interesting place. If i were to come back, I'd get their specialty in the pot but our group all wanted individual meals. I had the seafood noodles and I didn't quite know what to think. The broth was light and tbh, I really was craving a chicken noodle soup type of dish by the time I decided what to order. The clams and mussels were swell but the piece of crab was pretty out of place and difficult to eat. But strangest of all is that I have no idea what the last type of seafood was! It was like a piece of snail which was crispy on the outside but took some chewing to get to the inside? We all just kept staring at it in wonder. Definitely not a repeat. My friend had the abalone porridge and it looked like maybe one piece which was diced into so many smaller pieces to which you could hardly see it, let alone taste it. There's free ice cream but you need to put some muscle into it to really scoop it out. The best part of the whole meal were the usual sides. The service was mediocre as we had to wave them down a few times to order and to grab the check. For the overall price, it's not bad I guess but I'd say there's better out there. read more

Acceptable at best, Korean eatery w/ lackluster banchan and overall size of entrées. The featured, $$ per person orders of the spicy chicken hot plate seems to be the way to go @ about $14 per guest. However, being so close to Cerritos where there are more than several excellent Korean joints, there is absolutely no excuse to spend upwards of $14 before tax and tip for such mediocre Korean food. However, the saving grace = self serve thrifty ice cream on a cone, yes!! Maybe it was worth $14+ afterall? Proly not... I have only tried this place 2 times, and both times the food tastes were not bad. However the amount of food you get is seriously lacking. First time I visited, we tried Al Tang (spicy fish roe stew) and it had so little fish roe. Many years later, we tried to give this place one more try and ordered Dak Gal Bi (spicy chicken stew) and again, it had so little chicken and veggies. They offer additional toppings, but they are not cheap either... If not for the amount of food, I would rate this place about close to 4 stars. Not sure if I will come back again. read more

December 12th. A cold winter night in Southern California. I decided that tonight was the night that I try something new. Something that'll warm me up. Boy does this place check all the marks and then some! I will note that I am extremely hesitant in trying out a new spot that serves that red spicy Korean stew since a lot of places like to water it down. Buf this stew was something else. Flavor country all the way! It was beautifully balanced with some delicious ingredients (noodles, pork, kimchi, enoki mushroom, etc). I urge anyone to give this place a shot. This place is a hidden gem! We were coming back from a trip during Thanksgiving week, and craving for hot boiling home cooked style stews. Decided to try out this restaurant since it was on the way home. Located in a small older plaza, nothing fancy but the place was sparkly clean and the food tasted better than our grandmothers! It is not a fast servicing restaurant but worth of waiting. Bought some side dishes(banchan) to bring home, which we also enjoyed very much! read more

They have these refrigerators filled with banchan (sides) that you can buy and take home. The kind you'd find a H-Mart or something, so that was pretty cool. Other than that, nothing much has changed. Still the quaint little hidden gem Korean food spot. - CUSTOMER SERVICE Usually, the customer service at Asian restaurants are subpar. Not at Mhat. I have NEVER had bad customer service here. They don't rush you to leave, they make sure you have what you need, etc. Most restaurants, the server comes by, drops off the check, and tells you to take your time when they really mean to hurry you out. Restaurants in Asia wait on the customer to ASK for the check because they don't want to rush you out. It's awesome that Mhat follows that tradition. It's a nice change of pace from all the other places around here. - FOOD Met up with a friend and I was able to order more than my usual. We ordered the KOREAN PANCAKE. I love this thing. It's so flavorful and it's huge. It was cooked perfectly. Crispy batter and filled with yummy veggies and bits of octopus. The TTEOK-BOKKI was so good. Unfortunately, there was no spice element to it. That probably would've taken it over the top, but still so yummy. Everything was cooked perfectly, and I love that they throw a boiled egg in there. The owner suggested we eat the korean pancake with the sauce of the tteok-bokki.... she wasn't wrong. So good! The last thing we ordered was the BUL-NAK JUN-GOL (Bulgogi and Octopus Casserole Soup). This was good! Again, I think a little bit of a spice element would have counterbalanced the sweetness of the bulgogi and made it even better, but it was delicious! The food is tasty and they're very accommodating about lowering the spice level bc I can't handle spicy foods as I age. They have a select menu of items which they have perfected. The service is friendly and everything one would expect from a five star yelp review. But what sets this restaurant apart from the rest is their meal sets. If you're not following this restaurant on Instagram, you should. They offer meal sets which are great. There's usually three mains and 3-4 banchan. There's a mix of Korean, Korean American, and sometimes American dishes. End of each week they "release" the menu on their Instagram account; order and pay via Venmo, etc; then pick up on Wednesday (no delivery). I've ordered several of them and they're fast and healthier than drive thru (also delicious). I have two young kids so some of the spicier meals are not for them but there's enough banchan to make them bibimbap. My kids eat the food and that alone is worth five stars. They also sell banchan at their location which are made fresh and change week to week. We're all busy and sometimes it's nice to have a place to go where you can get take out but also meal sets and banchan to help with dinner that's healthier than fast food. read more

Their Galbi Jjim is so watery and plain that it should be called Galbi Tang. Can't compare to Sun Nong Dan's Galbi Jjim!!! Their seafood pancake was really good though. Very crispy and a good amount of seafood. Be sure to drench that thing in the sauce that it comes with! For fried rice after eating dak kal bi, they bring our pot back to kitchen and made fried rice there. This is not a good business practice as we dont know what they do inside with our dish. We heard numerous horror stories about other restaurants where owners sometimes mix pot with used food etc. Although staff shortage makes it difficult these says, they should be more transparent on how to cook. We ordered the dak-galbi with veges & rice cakes for two Before our main entree was served, our 6 wonderful banchans arrived. All were fresh & delish. Our main entree arrived in a big skillet with a burner underneath for cooking. Before my very eyes, I saw my wonderful dak-galbi being cooked. WOW, a scene for your eyes and your senses. Our Dak-Galbi stew was full of boneless pieces of succulent chicken, cabbage, carrots, onions, perilla leaves & two eggs all simmered in that wonderful Korean red paste/flakes sauce. SO GOOD! You know when a meal is great tasting? NO ONE is talking, lol. OMG, Hubby and I were just eating and eating. Our meal included a bowl of purple/white rice. Hubby and I were eating like it was a contest, lol. If you have any leftovers, the nice auntie of the restaurant will make you fried rice. However, we had nothing left, lol. Came here late on a Friday night expecting it to be packed. It was our first time here and my fiancé were pleasantly surprised: not too busy but decent crowd. Although they serve different menu items, this place specializes in dak galbi and that's what everyone was eating when we walked in. We followed suit and ordered the dak galbi for two and added udon noodles. Banchan was good: the kimchi and potato salad were my favorite. Then they brought out a portable stove and a skillet with our meal. This portion was huge! Easily could've fed 4 ppl. The dak galbi was full of chicken, rice cakes, sweet potato, onions, hard boiled eggs and parilla leaves. Spice level was perfect, not too spicy and too sweet. This dish is closer to the savory side and that was a pleasant surprise. Anyway, they cook it for you and come back to the table occasionally to stir. They told us to start eating the items that cooked first: rice cakes, chicken and then move on to the sweet potatoes later in the meal since they need more time to cook. Save some room at the end and ask them to make fried rice out of your leftovers. We didn't get to do this because we were stuffed and they were closing, but we'll be back! read more

Close by to where I live, the Mhat Korean Restaurant is operated by the same people that brought us Jang Soo Jang Korean Restaurant in Cerritos, before it became Red Palace KBBQ. Eager & willing for some hot soup at a new place, I was game to be single-legged & taken down to the Mhat. At the entrance, a sign listing the daily specials greets customers before being seated. Color menus on the wall display their very popular choon chun dahk galbi & special menu items. On a cool November day, I was in the mood for soup with a fiery broth. Yook gae jang (spicy beef & vegetable soup)- Spicy, it is! The broth had about a shaker full of red pepper. Perspiration flowed from my bald head. You could see the sweat outline of my thong through my jeans ;p J/K The generous bowl of soup had tender slices of beef, bean sprouts, noodles & the rest of the accoutrements that goes into making this wonderful dish. A bowl of moist white rice accompanies the soup. Hearty & rich, my tummy was happy upon completion of Mhat's delicious yook gae jang. The assorted banchan were very good. I helped myself to a second helping of each. Barley tea (iced or hot) is complimentary. Know what else is complimentary? Self serve Thrifty ice cream! Can't go wrong with ice cream, especially when it's free & it's Thrifty's brand. For my visit, butter pecan, mint chocolate chip & strawberry were the flavors du jour. Yum! Service was great! The young woman seating & tending to everyone was very pleasant, helping me decide what to order & periodically checking on me. She could be a hypnotherapist, with her calm, soothing voice & pleasant demeanor. The older woman who brought out my food, whom I assume to be the owner, was cheerful & friendly. Table seating for around 38 people, Mhat has a homey feel to it. 1043 MYFM plays on the house speakers, you know, to make sure you can rock out to One Direction & 5 Seconds of Summer while stuffing your face with kimchi. Parking is in a private lot, at the 7-11 strip mall. Not a lot of parking spots available, parking may be difficult to find during prime hours, with residential areas available. Interesting tidbit - the front signage says Maht, not Mhat. Hey, as long as there's great food, who cares? I was taken to the Mhat & I tapped out - to delicious food! Prices are quite reasonable for some flavorful dishes. Why five stars? The service. The staff were friendly & seemed to be very nice people happy to have my business. I enjoyed & was highly satisfied with my authentic Korean lunch & I'm awaiting my next visit where I may go for the house specialty - dahk galbi. A new Korean restaurant in La Palma that is quickly growing in popularity because of their seafood hot pot dishes. I like their current specialty menu item, Bulgogi Jung Geol (Bulgogi and Octopus Casserole with Vegetables and Noodles), $39. A great tasting combination of beef, chili paste and the essence of the sea, coupled with fresh, chewy noodles that really soaked in the flavors of the broth as it cooked. A delicious and hearty dish that will easily feed up to four people. The Kimchi Jjigae (Kimchi Stew with Pork Belly Slices), $8 was spot on, medium spicy, the fermented kimchi gives it that all important sour taste. There were just enough slices of succulent pork belly to balance the flavors and contrasting textures of the kimchi, pork and firm tofu. For Koreans, few things go as well with pork than fermented, sour kimchi. Eun Dae Goo Jo Rim (Braised Cod Fish with Radish in Spicy Sauce), $26. Braised fish is very popular in Korean cuisine and a family favorite of ours. Mhat adds large slices of firm tofu to the chunks of white radish, onion, bell and chili peppers. Although black cod is a bony fish, the meat has a silky texture and very sweet, delicate flavor which goes perfectly with this dish. An unbelievably delicious and aromatic dish, it is a excellent combination of sweet, savory and spiciness. Hearty enough to feed two people. Banchan consists of Napa cabbage kimchi, young turnip leaves kimchi, potato salad, soy based potatoes, marinated broccoli, pickled julienned radish, marinaded soybean sprouts, sauteed mild peppers. The kimchi is ripened just right: tasty, sour and crunchy. The other vegetables are fresh and crisp. Upon my three visits here, I notice the banchan is varied but selection changes as well. Free self-serve Thrifty ice cream, in a variety of flavors, behind all the dining tables in the hallway. Service is commendable: warm, friendly and attentive. Mhat means taste in Korean and this restaurant is appropriately named. Only quality, fresh ingredients are used and all the dishes seem uncommonly delicious. I also got Galbi Tang which is beef rib soup. It was light and comforting! The side dishes are also so fresh! There's a fridge at the front of the restaurant with a case of many side dishes you can purchase to-go! We ordered the Seafood Pancake to go and oh my, it was way better than I expected! I have tried their famous Octopus Sizzling rice on stone pot. It smelled pretty good and it was served table side. Enough portion for two people to share. Also tried their bulgogi. Good taste althought I wish it can be more "dryer" They give 8 different side dishes plus delicious seaweed soup, on top of that, you get unlimited thrifty ice cream. A large group of my friends came here for dinner before we headed over to Knotts Scary Farm and we were pleased with the quality of the food! This place can be tricky to find, but it's located in a small lot where the 7-Eleven is. We ordered: 1. Nakji Dolpan Bibimbap: It's Octopus bibimbap in a sizzling stone pot. There's a mix of rice and medley of vegetables. One thing that I wish I knew beforehand was how spicy it was going to get. The portion is HUGE and definitely fit for sharing between 2 people. Overall, the flavors were great. Yum! (5/5) 2. Soondubu: Probably the *BEST* Korean tofu soup I have ever tasted! They don't give you an egg, but the soondubu itself was so delicious that we were able to overlook that part. The soup was so fresh and you can definitely tell it's authentic. This definitely blows the other soondubu places I've gone to OUT OF THE WATER. (5/5) What I also like about this place is that you can request for iced barley tea, which is a great alternative to water. It has great health benefits such as aiding your digestive tract and is an antioxidant! There's no added fee either. Every customer is also entitled to some free self-serve Thrifty ice cream! That is totally awesome because I am a HUGE fan of Thrifty ice cream! Considering this is my 100th overall review, I am happy that this is a positive one, and a restaurant that I would recommend. I've been wanting to try Mhat ever since reading Eva L.'s review from late last year (thanks Eva!). Finally had the opportunity to go with the hubs last week. We stopped in on a Sun for dinner. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side with probably around 8 tables, but it's very clean and neat. This is a family run place (the same lady who used to run Jang Soo Jang in C-town...I miss that place but glad she's resurfaced here) and the son (?) was helping the owner/mother take orders and bring food out. You can tell they take pride in the food here, as when my husband asked the owner for recommendations, she proudly described their best/most popular dishes. We settled on the Oh Jing Oh Bokum, which is stir fried spicy squid with veggies and rice cakes, and the spicy pork dish. The banchan, or Korean side dishes came out quickly and though not the biggest banchan spread I've had, it was certainly one of the best. Sometimes when I eat banchan at other K-restos I feel like there isn't much attention given to them since they are just small sides, but at Mhat, each one tasted like they put time and love in to making them taste just right. The kimchis were very tasty and fresh without being overripe and sour, and there was refreshing pickled greens (don't know what type they were) that was so good I just wanted to drink the pickling liquid. There were even mildly spicy peppers with tuna - odd pairing I know and I didn't know what to think of it when we figured out what it was, but after tasting, it worked! The mains came out a short time later and the Oh Jing Oh Bokum was piping hot and delicious. The squid pieces were perfectly cooked and not rubbery like other places that ruin it by overcooking. The spicy pork was also quite good with spicy, tender, slightly sweet meat sitting on top of sliced onions. We were given the option of white or purple rice and went with the purple rice. When the rice came out it even had beans (red beans and larger round beans that I don't know the name of) and was cooked perfectly. I hate mushy overcooked rice. After we were done with our meal we helped ourselves to the free self serve Thrifty ice cream. Yay! The meal is on the pricier side for Korean restaurants, but the quality IMO is totally worth it. The other tables all seemed to be ordering their Chuncheon Dak Galbi stew thing, which looked ridiculously good. Next time when we're really ready to splurge ($28) we will get this. What a great local find for some high quality, home style Korean food. This is one of the few really good Korean restaurants in the area that specializes in some unique Korean dishes using bold, spicy flavors while still maintaining the feel of a small family restaurant. Not only was the food delicious, the service was super friendly and really welcoming. Although they are known to specialize in a handful of dishes like the spicy octopus bibimbap in a stone pot and the seafood pancake, I saw a picture of the chuncheon dak galbi and just had to get it. It's basically a generous portion of chicken, rice cake, cabbage, carrots, onions, and perilla leaves cooked at your table in a pot of spicy sauce. A dish that's very popular in Korea, the tender chicken, cabbage and rice cakes work to soak up the sauce perfectly, creating an amazingly savory dish. The flavor of the spicy sauce was spot on as well, and had a great balance of depth and spice. Once you are done with your meal, they mix the rice into the remaining sauce to make a spicy fried rice. This is one well thought out dish, and a sure sign that these guys know exactly what they're doing. But aside from the delicious food, I love the authenticity of the flavors and the pride that they seem to take in the dishes that they serve. It's the kind of pride that only comes when you know that you are serving some really good, quality food. It reminded me of the times I used to go eat with my family as a kid, when we could have a really authentically Korean meal without having to deal with the 2 hour waits and the yelp hype crowd. Even though I like yelp for what it is, it's nice to know that there are still these small family run Korean restaurants that strive to serve some uniquely Korean flavors without any compromise. First time dinning here after my sister told me about this place. Food: Galbi jjim $28 the beef is very tender and flavorful. Excellent dish. Must try! Beef bone soup $10 very good on a cold night. Bulgogi $12-beef was ok. I will pass on this one next time. Also came with many side dishes. They were all very good. Service: getting our food took about 40mins....which was ok because I understand they cooked everything fresh but I wish they would serve us some side dishes while we wait. Genuinely confused as to how it has such good ratings. I ate here tonight with my family with a party of six and the restaurant maybe had two other smaller parties. We decided to go here because of their great reviews but I don't know if I'd come back here again. 1) Service: why is there only one server working? I understand the restaurant is small and there isn't a lot of people but if people clearly need to be tended to, maybe you should notice? I'm used to korean restaurants having servers who are extremely attentive and on top of noticing whether you need water or etc. 2) Food: it took maybe an hour to get our food. I'm even talking about the banchan, not our entrees. Those dishes typically come out in the very beginning when you're given your water! They lacked flavor as well. That's mainly the reason why I'm only giving it two stars. I'm not typically one to complain about how fast I get my food but WOW, they are EXCEPTIONALLY slow at making your food and bringing it out to the table. Very confused, maybe they were short on cooks. I ordered the dolsot bibimbap, standard korean dish and literally probably the fastest meal they could make out of all the orders but it was delivered so late! Flavor wise, it was pretty subpar at best. Not that I expect some flavorbomb with a dish comprised of only rice and vegetables but something about the dish lacked the flavor I needed. It's also a dish I never finish but I actually craved more food afterwards bc the portions were so small! Wtf? We also shared some spicy ddukobokki and while that tasted really good, the portion was unreasonably small as well. Definitely maybe could share between two people. I really like Korean food and I've had my fair shares of Korean BBQ, Soondubu, galbi jjims, Korean fried chicken etc., but i've never had dahk galbi. Let me tell you, I'm lovin' this! The pot comes half cooked and then you finish cooking it at your table. It comes with so many yummy things in addition to big pieces of delicious chicken, like rice cake, veggies, and sweet potato. As if that is not already delicious enough, you can add other items (dumplings, cheese, noodles) to the pot for an extra charge. One order of the 2 person pot feeds 2-3 generously without additions but if you add more items it could definitely feed 4. Towards the end of eating you can ask them to make fried rice with your leftovers at no charge. The fried rice was soooo good! I took some home and ate it the next day and it was still yummy! Another thing that's really good about this restaurant is that they have complimentary ice cream as well. It's self serve towards the back of the restaurant. As others have mentioned, don't expect a quick meal. Even if you get seated right away you'll most likely have to wait a while for your dahk galbi to come. This place is a bit out of the way for my friend and I, but we happened to be in the area, found it through yelp, and was told that this area is known for some of the best Korean food in OC. This place is pretty much just another little down to earth casual Korean restaurant located in a typical strip mall. There seemed to be plenty of parking.....then again, it was still well before dinner time. We showed up at about 5pm and had the entire place to ourselves. However, surprisingly, the place started to fill up from 5.30pm onwards. From what my friend had read up on this place, it's pretty obvious they're known for some of the best traditional and authentic Korean dishes.....their specialty being the Dahk Galbi (like a spicy hotpot stew) that's hard to find anywhere else in OC. Since it was our first time here, we had to try it out. The dish is for either two ($29.99) or three ($44.99) persons and so would probably be a pretty good portion. However, I still had to try out their seafood pancake as, not only is it my favorite, it's also how I usually judge how good a Korean restaurant is. And of course, you get the usual serving of refillable small salad appetizers. Lets start of with the salad appetizers.....and is the reason I had to cut a star or so. They weren't bad, but we just found the pickled cut green chillies and kimchis (cabbage and cucumber) rather salty. As for the seafood pancake....we had requested it be cooked a little longer so as to crisp the bottom.....I hate soggy bottoms. Overall, it was actually very good....tastes different than most other Korean restaurants, but what I liked was that it was full of ingredients and much less floury. Yummy. As for the specialty, Dahk Galbi....it's pretty much the Korean version of a spicy hotpot like stew. Lots of ingredients.....nice big pieces of chicken meat, lots of vegetables, rice cake and hard boiled eggs. Since my friend is on a low sodium diet, we requested that less soy sauce be used.....and it still tasted quite delicious! I'm told they Koreans would normally eat the stew with rice (to lessen the saltiness) or mix in some udon noodles. However, we just ate the stew on it's own.....then toward the end, the remaining stew was put in a separate bowl and rice was mixed into the residual stew in the hotpot and allowed to cook further over the gas table cooker....till the bottom of the rice crisped up a bit. It actually tasted very good too! I know this dish is supposed to be spicy, but surprisingly, for me anyway, it wasn't. It tasted very homey, very comforting, and very filling...delicious! I must admit that I didn't expect our meal here to be THIS good.....I was pleasantly surprised.....and the service was very pleasant, down to earth, friendly, and helpful.....as the lady kept wanting to help us stir and prepare the stew at the table so that it was done just right....and served us as well. They are definitely dedicated to serving their customers the best authentic Korean meal possible....and it certainly shows. Will Definitely be back again. read more

Small portions, but expensive prices. Taste is just okay. Atmosphere isn't great. Service alright. Even though we had ordered $100 worth (5 servings worth) for 5 people, owner seemed to think we needed to order more. I have owed this place a review for a long time. Location: Great for me because it's so close, but it's in a quiet area, away from the main complexes, which may be why it's not as well-known. Service: Excellent. Staff always smiling, quick and friendly service. Food: Saved the best for last. The food is amazing. Their Galbi jjim with abalone is so flavorful. The meat is tender, but more surprisingly, so is the abalone. The stir fried squid is also bursting with flavor. Everything I've had here has been delicious. I love their side dishes too. The first time I ordered from here was takeout and I never even made it to the main dish because I was too busy eating side dishes with rice. I've been trying to convince them to sell me their kimchi now for ages without any success. :P They make all of their side dishes so there are new ones all the time. You can tell they put a lot of care and love into making all their dishes. This is as close to home-cooked Korean food I will ever get, since I'm not Korean. **They also have free ice cream. Amazing amazing food! My girlfriend and I got the Dak Galbi for the two of us and it was honestly one of the best meals I have ever had. The staff were very kind; they made us fried rice after we were finished and the whole meal was just fantastic. We will definitely be coming back to try some more. read more

This Korean restaurant has such good soups. Their Kimchi Jji Gae and Yook Gae Jang were so delicious and warm. The amount of food you get for the amount you pay for is amazing! We got two large bowls of soups, two bowls of rice, and lots of banchan when we ordered takeout. Everything on the menu looks so good and we can't wait to come back to try more! read more
