I don't recommend this place for dinner because its overpriced. You should only go for lunch or happy hour. Lunch is reasonable, they have options between $10-$15. Dinner will be so much more expensive for portion not any bigger or barely bigger. They have $5 taxi mambo and its delicious!!! its a frozen margarita mixed with raspberry or strawberry swirl. Lunch can be crowded so make sure all your parties are there for seating. It goes by quicker. I had a changa with chicken and it was ok. It came with rice, guacamole and beans. My first experience with Mi Cocina was in Southlake, which had to have been ten plus years ago. I've since visited virtually all of their area locations, mostly with clients or business associates. The mambo taxi, which is basically a frozen house margarita with a sangria swirl, is always enjoyable. Most locations, like this one in Irving, have a patio if you are so inclined. The food is unquestionably where Mi Cocina falls short. It's definitely not scanty, but it certainly feels as if there are a few elements missing. The seasoning always seems to be on the low to non existent side, which is a pity because there are so many magical Mexican seasonings to use, everything from Goya Adobo to Sazon and of course your usual suspects, garlic powder, Chili powder, cumin, salt and pepper. Also the quesadilla, chimichanga, and taquitos all come out a little dry. Basically anything with a cooked flour tortilla seems to have a tendency to dry out noticeably. The fajitas however are typically what I get, and normally in the all beef configuration. I actually prefer the traditional fajita meat (flank steak) versus the more expensive ribeye option they offer. Also their queso blanco is nice as it's cheesy, rich, but not too thick or coagulated. Overall the food here is uninspiring, that by no means is bad, it simply leaves a lot to be desired. Though, for a first meeting with a new employee or client it could be beneficial, as it's unoffensive, and perhaps a good place to feel somebody out. I came here for lunch only because the restaurant next door had a half hour wait. But by default, me and my co-workers had a fantastic experience. We were greeted immediately and warmly. Amazingly, at 12:30 our party of 5 was seated immediately. Our waiter was great. Efficient and attentive and intuitive to our needs. Our food was pretty good. I had the half quesadilla and soup lunch special. The quesadilla was very good and the soup would have been good had it not been quite as salty. Overall it was a very good experience and I will certainly think of it more often as a place to go for lunch or dinner. read more

This was my first spot after flying in from Charlotte! I came after it was recommended to me by one of my fellow bartenders, and was told to get the "Mambo Taxi" margarita! You must try a Mambo Taxi at least once in your life. Whether you do so here or at their sister restaurant Taco Diner is up to you, but it is one of the best drinks on the planet. Even more so because one is all you need to get you feeling alright alright alright. My friend and I stopped in for lunch after some holiday shopping and were starved. Chips, salsa, and drinks were out quickly, but once our food came we didn't see our server again until he brought the bill. My friend's empty beer bottle sat for half an hour without anyone coming by to ask if she would like another until we were both already finished and ready to leave. Service aside, everything else was great. I can't remember what she ordered but I always get their brisket tacos. The meat is oven roasted overnight and comes in corn tortillas with melted jack cheese alongside the most flavorful green rice and a sliced avocado salad. In the many years I have ordered this dish, it's always consistently good (albeit yes, a smidge on the greasy side). The reason I give them 3 stars and not 4 is as follows: -service -steep pricing -the mojitos Let me explain; mojitos are my favorite cocktail, and the first time I tried one from Mi Cocina was at their Shops at Legacy location. My friends raved about how they served them with a real sugar cane stick (which they did and yes, it was awesome) and how they were the best EVER!!!!! Meh. There was so much muddled mint in mine that I kept getting large chunks and it reminded me of cut grass from bottom of a lawn mower. And for nearly $10 a pop? Not so much thanks. If they lowered their prices, hired a few more servers and gave them easier sections to manage (as apparently bad service is a trend here), and fixed the mojitos they would be golden. We went there for a quick lunch and found the place bustling with people. We were soon led to our table. We were a party of 7 and thought it would be a little difficult to get a big table quickly, but we did. I liked the decor, it is not the fast food kind of decor, it was pretty elegant. The lunch menu had many options, I went for Half an order of chicken quesadillas with an avocado salad side. The order came in in about 10 mins, pretty quick considering there was a lot rush. The quesadillas were pretty good - crisp and the chicken filling tasted fresh and was not dry and chewy. The avocado salad had only two thin slices of avocado and mostly lettuce but altogether it was a decent salad. The brisket tacos and enchiladas were great - that's what the others at table said. All I have to say is..MAMBO TAXI's!!!! get one, two, or if you dare three...but even with my tolerance, three will have me rolling on the floor. Not going to lie. I always get them on the rocks, and some people may or may not know that they can serve it like that. I don't like frozen drinks, so this is just the way I prefer it, but I do feel like they taste a bit stronger that way too, haha! Their food is good too. I remember when I first had their chips and salsa, I seriously felt like their chips were the best, perfect amount of crunch and were not dripping with oil, and their salsa had the perfect amount of kick to it. The only reason I would give less stars is the service at this location suckksss. I get that it's a very very busy area especially during lunch time, but I kept peeking inside and saw 3-4 tables opened and no one had been seated there yet. This review is for happy hour. I haven't eaten food here in a long time... I came here a couple of Friday's ago to meet some friends for happy hour. You can only get the happy hour specials in the bar area, so I was glad I got there early enough to grab a table. They offer a few margarita's for $5, so I settled on the mambo taxi. It tastes sort of like a sangria swirl margarita. It's so good. Not too tart and not too sweet. After two of those bad boys I was all smiles. I'm a fan of Mi Cocina, I always have been. I haven't been to this location in 3 or 4 years and I don't really know why that is. When my department ventured to Cheddar's for department lunch and they couldn't accommodate us. I jumped right in with "how about Mi Cocina? I'm calling them right now" We were seated within 5 minutes of arriving with a party of 8 well after noon in the madness of lunch rush. Our server immediately greeted us and had drinks, chips, salsa and large guacamole on the table pretty quickly. The guac was delish, I hated I had to share with the table. It was a celebratory lunch so Mambo Taxi's all around. The drinks were excellent as always and who doesn't enjoy a mid-day cocktail. I ordered one of the specials the seafood enchiladas and those were probably rank in the top 3 as far as taste; the seafood was really fresh and plentiful. I like going here on occasion because it's convenient and you are usually seated quickly. I'm torn on giving them 4 stars, but after my most recent visit I realized a few things... The chips are only alright, as well as the queso and salsa. I've eaten tons of tex mex and authentic Mexican food, so I don't feel they are up to par. The drinks are okay, the selection is small. I don't feel like the prices they charge are justified at all, in general. The environment is good, very casual. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here or wait to be seated, for some reason it is not worth it to me. If they offer happy hour I would go, but only for that. Tasty food and very attentive service! I enjoyed the Tex Mex offerings not available in the NW where I reside. The brisket street tacos were delicious and filling with fresh in house made tortillas and tender beef. The bowl of fantastic queso blanco with crispy thick tortilla chips was magic (as it disappeared rapidly) Menu and drink prices are reasonable when you look at the generous portions of fresh ingredients and pleasant upscale atmosphere. It is refreshing to see Mexican food served in an environment that is not saltillo floor tiles and yellow/green heavy plaster walls! The salsa was not what I am used to, not spicy enough and the taco had the lettuce, tomato and cheese on the side with some weird dressing on it. Normally when I think of going out for mexican food I expect either big portions and lower quality food or smaller portions with higher quality food. Mi Cocina deliver on both good sized portion with excellent quality food. I had the Chicken Fajitas Sunset Style. I highly recommend it!!! The chili con queso sauce is awesome. I can't say enough about it. Also, we never ran out of chips and salsa while waiting for the food to arrive. The salsa was really tasty and had a decent amount of spice to it. A frozen margarita and sangria swirl, they are lethal and oh, so delicious! Mi Cocina is a best for enjoying a few Mambo Taxi's on the patio on a sunny afternoon. The chips are the worst thing I've had there. They are thick and flavorless like cardboard. The salsa is unremarkable...neither good or bad. On the plus side, you're unlikely to fill up on chips before the meal. The food is mostly average and often it's only lukewarm when it's served to you, which is puzzling because it's not slow to come out of the kitchen. The lunch fajitas were disappointing, served slightly cool and underseasoned on a plate with the onions barely cooked rather than the hot sizzling skillet with caramelized onions. The brisket tacos are excellent, the best thing I've eaten there. Wait staff is attentive and does a good job taking care of you (again puzzling with why the lukewarm food). read more
