Its a cute spot. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. I wanted a simple sandwich that wasnt on the menu but they made it work. I tried the vanilla lemonade and it was actually good. I really enjoyed my sandwich even though it only had avocado and arugula on it. The toast wasnt too hard. I ate half there and the other half for dinner when I made it home 10 hours later. I wasnt a fan of seeing them prep the meat. But it was a smaller kitchen.
Have been here several times and always good. Great service. I would not count on online order at peak times as sometimes they close online ordering to prioritize in-person service. They have such a way of making classic sandwiches next level.
Unique little breakfast cafe in the downtown Philly area, with outside sitting and the old school diner vibe inside! Even though the menu is limited, your meal is made fresh and tastes great! Glad we got to stop in and try it, I've had it bookmarked for a while after seeing them online!
The service at this crowded and packed spot is amazing. The staff is friendly and bubbly. They bring excitement to the experience as well as passion. The aesthetic is that of a quirky dinner and they slide into this demeanor. The food is great with the pancake being the star of the how. I always come back if/when I'm in Philly
10/10 sandwich. About a 20 min wait after we put in our order for pickup. But so fresh and tasty and worth the money.
wow was not expecting to like a sandwich this much, but middle child was definitely worth the hype! The sandwich bread was crunchy but not hard and the flavors paired so well together in their shopsin club I definitely want to come back and try other sandwiches on their menu
Survey says... Middle Child has the best Thanksgiving sandwich for vegetarians. I loved the vegetarian version of their Turkey Dip! A small switch-up from last year, they included green beans instead of cornbread and it's MUCH better. Way more flavorful. The sandwich bread can be differentiated from the other ingredients this way. The sweet potato and orange cranberry were the most prominent flavors. It was still warm and toasty when I took my first bite at 12:15 this afternoon and my colleague picked it up at 11:50 AM. I highly recommend! It's one of the best spots in center city to grab a sandwich.
Great breakfast sandwiches on this breakfast visit. Crispy and tasty hash browns to go with the breakfast sandwiches. It will get crowded so finding a seat is tough if you want to eat in. There are self serve water and other items on the station. Because of how busy it is and the turnover of people, expect to wipe your own table if you want to eat there. Overall, love the creativity and heartiness of their sandwiches.
In a city known to have great sandwiches/hoagies, Middle Child is an landmark institution that is a MUST visit for any locals and/or visitors. During the Thanksgiving time, they have a Turkey Dip sandwich that is absolutely bonkers! Crispy and tender confit turkey, paired roasted sweet potatoes, creamed spinach, and tangy cranberry orange sauce between two slices of bread, served with the most savory boat of gravy on the side. Some of the turkey is toasted with the bread so the turkey is crispy and the majority of it is cooked on the griddle, which leaves it moist and tender, giving you a crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside combo. The sweet potatoes add a nice smooth sweetness to the sandwich. The creamed spinach inside is to die for, adding the much needed creamy component to the sandwich. The cranberry sauce helps balance out the sandwich and cut through some of that richness. I love my sandwich a bit more saucy and Middle Child understands! They provide a whole gravy boat for dunking! They really nailed it with this one and definitely a must-get when it is available the Thanksgiving holiday time! It was so good that I had to go back the following day and get their Turkey dip again! The staff was very nice and even remembered me haha. The space is a bit small, especially when it is crowded on the weekend. I see a lot of folks get it to-go, so perhaps that's the move when they are packed!
Middle Child is iconic in Philly for a reason, and the first time I went, I totally understood the hype. I heard so many good things about their Turkey Dip sandwich, so I definitely had to go check them out to satisfy my curiosity. I went during the peak lunch hour, and even though there was a huge crowd and a bit of a wait, their Turkey Dip was absolutely worth it. It was my first time trying it, and the sandwich was incredible! Dare I say the best sandwich I have ever had. Though the shop was busy with lunch rush, they managed to nail it. The turkey was warmed all the way through, even allowing some crispy turkey bits that added a nice textural contrast. The combination of the warm turkey, creamed spinach, sweet potatoes, and cranberry sauce perfectly captured the essence of Thanksgiving in sandwich form. It was the kind of sandwich that I'd go back to Middle Child just to eat. However, I went back the second time around 2-3PM to beat the rush. There was barely any line or wait, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. Despite the kitchen being less busy, the quality of the sandwich dropped significantly as their sandwich wasn't properly warmed through and missed that crispiness that made their sandwich stand out from my last visit. It's worth noting that this is a casual spot where you pick up your food from the counter (even if you dine in) and have to put away the plates yourself. I don't mind the self-service model, but when you're doing the work yourself, you would expect the kitchen would at least handle the food consistently. I just hope they can find some consistency, because their potential is amazing.
Gotta finish an anniversary in Philly in continuing the food scene experience- Hubby needs a good breakfast, so after research on a best of Philly AM sandwich, we Uber'ed to Middle Child. We entered. It was about 10am on Sunday last week. Grabbed an outside table as we waited. And waited..... Realized that is what everyone who was seated was doing. All seats taken. My husband sat outside and I sipped my vanilla limeade near the counter. This limeade was delightful. Surprising mixture, unexpected mashup. I sipped it slow to enjoy. We ordered the Hershel and 2 hash browns. Our watches ticked as hotel check out approached and fortunately we ate quickly once my name came from behind the counter. Over 30 minutes later. The hash browns were large squares- fried, crispy brown. Spice brought (but couldn't identify), however it complimented. Very good. The Herschel- meaty, not too cheesy. Could've used more of that cheese ooze. Puffy, pillow egg- stacked. Gooey scramble. A signature. Very good sandwich and a unique combo. Stars taken for the time of order to table, (not just because we were on a time frame). In that, Middle Child's food is worth the hype, but not worth the wait.
Middle Child in Philly. Lunchtime rush, line out the door, and somehow I find myself reaching for... a vegan sandwich. Me. Not vegan. Not even close. But the "Vegan Phogie" read like a dare I couldn't walk past--a mash-up of flavors that looked too intriguing to ignore. Bite one? Yeah, there's creativity here. They're pushing boundaries, not just slapping veggies between bread. Hoisin-Roasted Eggplant, Avocado, Fresh and Frizzled Onions, Stemmy Cilantro, Pho Sauce. But the honest truth: the roasted eggplant fought back. Tough, chewy, quite the workout . And the tang? Heavy-handed. A little balance would've brought the whole thing together. The hash brown though? Oh that's absolutely on the money! That said--sandwiches are my soft spot, and it's clear Middle Child takes theirs seriously. You can feel the care, the playfulness of the names, the let's-make-this-memorable energy. Even when it's not a perfect hit, I'd rather eat somewhere aiming high than phoning it in. Respect where it's due.
FINALLY visited for a sandwich while on a walk today and it lived up to the hype I don't care what anyone says. The Shopsin Club is easily one of my favorite sandwiches ever. The hashbrown was crispy on the outside yet still thick and potatoey and just so yummy.

We stopped here for lunch on a Friday after a dr appointment at Penn. My husband and I split a sandwich. Honestly it was sort of replacement level. This place is really hyped up but for me it did not live up to it. I would be willing to give it another chance and order some different items but for now, I would not recommend read more

This place has the best sandwiches - very filling and efficient. The five dudes behind the counter keep the production line going, and the line (there was always a line while we were in there) keeps moving. The guy sitting next to me at the counter said the food was so good he had come for the first time the day before, and came back that day we were there and ordered the exact same thing (and he took a picture of his food too!). U can just tell this is a 5 star spot.... Great ingredients and flavors loved the bread. It is def expensive side after tax and all. Bye felicia was very good and seasonal veggie was sweet potato, but might try something else next time or wait till they switch the veg to order it again just cuz it was too carb on carb even for my carb loving tendencies. But above all that this place is well known for its amazing vibes which makes the experience eating here great. read more

On first glance, these are $15 sandwiches that include ingredients like blueberry chutney, cranberry miso mayo, or artichoke relish. There are fun green smiley faces everywhere and the whole thing feels designed more for an Instagram post than for eating. It's the kind of thing I don't want to like, but then I try it and before I know it I'm telling everybody that a turkey sandwich without blueberry chutney isn't even worth eating. Hype and branding aside, these are just really good sandwiches. It's even hard to get lunch at Wawa for $15 these days, so I can't really complain about the price. The breakfast sandwich from this place really hits the spot! That scrambled egg is amazing and it makes up 80% of the sandwich. It has a small diner vibe so nice and cozy in there. We did have quite a wait for our sandwiches to go but well worth the wait! read more
A friend raved about this place, so I came to try the sandwiches! Overall, their bread is high quality but very crusty, so biting/chewing is a little difficult! The sandwiches are also huuuge, so I could only finish half for a meal. They don't like substitutions or leaving stuff out, which really shows how particular they are about the flavor combinations! I'm sure they spent a while cooking up these sandwiches, therefore the taste of them are very unique! I know they have good vegetarian options, so I'll come back and try those next time. read more

Dined in for the first time this morning. I was introducing this place to my lady and i haven't been here in a couple years but what a great reintroduction. I got the hershell and she grabbed the breakfast sandwich (and added sausage) and we swap halves so there's no FOMO lol. Both sandwiches are amazing and I can't wait to go back and try the cold ones Mine was eggs and corned beef while she had the sausage egg and cheese. Lastly, I ordered the special bread pudding that they were offering and that was really the cherry on top The vibe in there is like a hip ass diner which I was digging. You'll most likely be introduced to new music if you're going in there but I liked every thing I heard while I sipped on some pretty great coffee. Cool spot. Cool service. Definitely recommend to anyone thats thinking of visiting. read more

We ended up in PA for a quick weekend trip & came here for lunch , after looking at places for a quick bite. I had the Shops in club sandwich , wow it was delicious the combo of the turkey, bacon & avocado in this tasted soooo good nice toasted ciabatta bread lordddd just put it over the top. Hubby had the So Long sal , another delicious sandwich! Salami , prosciutto artichoke spread Very good combo as well ... also grabbed a bag of chips the buttermilk nice addition. Cute small place , service was quick good prices the sandwiches were amazing & definitely worth a try. read more
THIS PLACE ROCKS!!!!!! Vibes are cool and trendy, staff is super nice and the food is AWESOME!!!! Went here on New Year's Day super hungover and dying for some form of food. Ended up ordering the simple breakfast sandwich and added a hash-brown. It was simple but one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had. Talk about fluffy mofo eggs these things were wild in the best way. The aesthetic of the place is great and food is even better. Middle Child is exactly what the Philly food scene has been missing in the last few years-- fast, casual, but gourmet sandwiches without the mediocre chain-restaurant options The food is FANTASTIC. Everything I've either tried is beyond delicious. Even the "classics" are done with more finesse and just a touch different to make their sandwiches memorable and finger lickin' good!!! So why the 3-stars? There are definite issues with their food handling standards and practices. As I sat at the bar awaiting my order, I noticed their workers consistently touching the trashcans and then the food, without washing their hands or wearing gloves. I saw workers cooking food and sneaking bites of food for themselves. Workers would make sandwiches, lean over to go to grab more ingredients and have their dirty apron squish over a person's order on the counter. All of these things happened over and over again during the 45 mins that my friend and I waited for our order. Additionally, while they are extremely busy and the waits can be long... sometimes they substitute different breads or ingredients when they've run out without asking or consulting the customer. I could see this potentially causing issues with food allergies or general complaints from customers for not getting exactly what they ordered... For example, we ordered the Reuben, but we received it without the rye bread. While it was still really good, it was missing that distinct taste. So, yes, I'll probably be back again in the future because the food was good. I just really wish they practice safer food handling, even their health score on yelp isn't stellar either. Second time coming here and I'm not disappointed! Came here on a Sunday afternoon with friends and enjoyed every single bite of my sandwich. We waited in line for only 5 minutes and ordered after I grabbed some chips from the wall. We opted to eat at the bar where we got to watch the sandwich artist get to work! From the bread to the tossed arugula to the phenomenal blueberry chutney and mayo I was left to spin around on my bar stool with a stomach full and still half a sandwich to go on the counter lol! This place doesn't disappoint and is worth every dollar. read more
Stopped in for breakfast and was not disappointed. Will probably be a stop every time I'm in Philly. Counter service, some seating (but it's pretty small), delicious sandos. Wanted to try a couple things, so went with the grilled cheese and the herschel waker (eggs, short rib corned beef, sharp american). Sandwiches were bomb. The herschel is huge, lots of corned beef and a mound of fluffy eggs. The grilled cheese is so cheesy and delicious, perfect crisp texture on the outside and some of the cheese melts and fries on the grill which is amazing. Was pretty much useless after this breakfast but it was worth it. Will be back to try lunch. read more

One word: yum! I have been wanting to go here for a while and just happened to be in the area. The place is small inside. Most people seem to take out or even call ahead and pick up but there are about 10 seats at the bar and a few tables to sit at. You order up front at the counter I was planning on taking my breakfast sandwich to go since they were packed and no seats were available but after waiting 15min or so one opened up at the counter so I grabbed it! The employee also did not mind I changed my order. The vibe there is energetic and fun! The music is awesome too. Even the employees looked like they were having fun even though they were quickly making sandwiches for a bunch orders. Sitting at the counter I realized they had a great system down on how to prep all the sandwiches in such a small area. It was also fun just to watch. I got the standard breakfast sandwich on the menu with pork roll. They definitely do not skimp on the meat or egg as seem in my photo attached! The eggs were buttery, fluffy and full of flavor. I think if you are concerned about it being too much egg it really isn't. They are more fluffy than anything. The sharp cooper American was creamy but love the twist on a classic american cheese. The arugula was interesting in the sandwich because arugula has such a strong distinct flavor I thought it would be distracting to the rest of the sandwich but definitely was not. And of course you can't forget the bread. Which was amazing!! It is on Philly Pullman potato bread and toasted to buttery perfection! They actually ran out and I was able to get one of the last sandwiches made with the bread that day. They do have a rye or wheat as an alternative. So glad I finally made it to Middle Child! I came on a Saturday around 12:30pm. It was pretty crowded, and the employee taking orders let everyone in line to order know that the wait for food would be about 30 minutes. I got my sandwich to eat there, and it only ended up taking about 20 minutes. I ordered the Bye Felicia, which was a vegetarian take on their So Long Sal sandwich. Instead of meat, the sandwich had local squash, in addition to the normal ingredients (onion, provolone, house dressing, artichoke spread, and arugula on a Sarcone's hoagie roll.) It was delicious! The sandwich was huge with very generous fillings, so I took half home to eat for dinner. I can't wait to come back and try other sandwiches (my eye is on the Phoagie!) read more

This is my favorite sandwich spot in the city! One of the chefs here previously worked at Court Street Grocers in NYC which was our favorite place there, and then came and opened Middle Child. Although the menu here isn't quite as big as at Court Street, it is still delicious. Some of our favorite sandwiches include the classic breakfast sandwich, Baller Classic and CSG (Court Street) Ruben. It is easy to order online and pick up, or order inside and eat in. The inside has a fun vibe with classic diner bar seating as well as regular tables. Everyone working there is also super nice. Next we need to check out their clubhouse in Fishtown! read more

First impression when you enter - small family-owned restaurant with warm welcoming Philly vibes. Then you look at the menu and think "oh ok, limited menu options so they must be good at what they make". When you place the order and are greeted with smile you feel "oh nice welcoming service" and when the food arrives and the flavors burst in your mouth you are like "oh my god...". So this is the story of my first visit at the Middle Child. Amazing sandwiches! We ordered Shopsin Club (obviously) and their special cranberry sandwich. We sat on the bar counter top as they made our sandwich. The sandwiches were delicious and the sauce in them was full of flavors. I like when I can see my food being made. Place is neat and clean. The ambiance was cool and there was music in the background. Overall a good dining experience. They offer few cents discount on coffee if you are Jefferson employee. We were walking in the city looking for a unique local place for lunch. And we stumbled on Middle Child. After a morning walking around the Xmas Village, we were actually thinking cheesesteaks. Much happier here. A bit healthier but extremely good. The Surfer & So Long Sal - 2 great sandwiches. The Surfer had Marsala jam that was incredible - not too sweet with a lot of flavor. Sal had house dressing & artichoke spread with salami. Nice touch. What was cool - when we walked in, there was only one table occupied. The server greeted us & made recommendations for us. It was fun. Right after we sat down, the place rocked with many more patrons. The bar seating & all tables were in use when we left. The server even asked from behind the counter how we enjoyed our sandwiches. We took the 2nd half of our sandwiches home & they gave us new paper with which to wrap our take home treats. read more
If you are gluten free you need to stop reading this right now and go to Middle Child. Seriously. Right now. If you're not gluten free you may continue..... This place is RIDICULOUSLY good. For a person who doesn't typically care for sandwiches or turkey, I am in love with their Shopsin sandwich. The turkey is suuuuper moist, the bacon is plentiful and crispy, the sauce is creamy, the...I don't even know what's in here and I don't even care. Just eat it. Trust. All of their sandwiches are filled to the brim with yummy yum yums. (Please feel free to substitute whatever you like with "yummy yum yums"). Aside from the sandwiches, this place has pickle chips. At first I was all..."ew. Pickle chips?" And then my wife was like "mmm pickle chips." So I tried them and now I'm all like "yea, you were right....(as usual)." They also have Pocky, which I don't even need to say anything about because everyone who is anyone knows about and appreciates Pocky. They have a few other random snacks and kitchy things to check out as well while you're waiting on line. Oh and yes, if you're coming anytime near lunchtime, be prepared to wait on line. But it's not even a thing. This place is fast and worth every moment of your time. But those sandwiches must be expensive if you're telling me they're so damn good, no? Do you want a garbage sandwich? If you want a garbage sandwich, you're going to pay for a garbage sandwich. This place is giving you EVERYTHING you could ask for with a smile on their faces. So yes, just give them your money. They want $464.52 for bread and stuff in between? Just sell all your possessions and give them your profits. You didn't really want that diamond that was passed on for the last 68 generations. Wait, you want to eat diamonds now? That's gross and probably painful. Also, why are you still here? What better way to start the day than making a quick (parking not included) stop by @middlechildphiladelphia for a snacky snack. The Middle Child & that Breakfast Sandwich that's Arugula you see that's making the sandwich POP Awf and WHEW! Did it ever?! Now, if I would have stuck with my decision to add avocado. It would have been over for y'all! Their customer service was spot on. Whoever helped me with my order even asked me what I had planned for my day. Which kind of threw me a for a loop. Typically, people ask how you are for the day? They wished safe travels on the journey back to VA. Which was very thoughtful. The timeliness of the preparation wasn't bad either. It took about 10 minutes for my Breakfast Sandwich. Worth it! read more
We'll, they didn't lie about the line! Usually a good sign, but not always. Happy to report the line in this case was a sign of good things to come. I ordered the Surfer, mainly to try to hold onto the last weeks of summer (they took my blueberry coffee away from me at Wawa)! The sandwich was a great combination of their in-house turkey, blueberry chutney, Swiss, and mayo on a ciabatta. Middle Child is a about a mile from my office so the chutney had soaked in pretty good by the the time I lugged it back to the office. The taste was wonderful and the turkey and blueberry chutney were the stars of the show. Their sandwich menu is calling me back to try their other items. Definitely going to eat at the restaurant next time, if I can find a seat. read more
I know Yelp will want a longer review but I'll make it just this. Go here and eat these sandwiches. They are all incredible and you can't pick a bad sandwich. You can't even pick a mediocre sandwich. It is only BEST IN CLASS. Word on the street is they are opening a "sister" location. Today we had the So Long Sal!, The Surfer, and The Phoagie. They were all spot on. Come here. Eat anything. I've been following Middle Child for years on the internet, ogling the breakfast sandwiches and dreaming of the day I would finally put one in my face. Historically, when I am this excited about food, I end up disappointed. Reality simply cannot live up to the unreasonably high expectations I've developed. I finally had the opportunity to go to Middle Child yesterday, and I am very pleased to report that it truly was as delicious as I'd imagined. Big fluffy eggs, perfectly toasty bread. I got a hash brown on the side and it was wonderful. I can't wait to go back again so I can try a phoagie or a charred on. Thank you for not disappointing me, Middle Child. Important details: we ordered online and arrived just as it was being wrapped up - about 40 minutes on a Sunday morning. You can also order & wait, you can take it home, or you can eat it inside at a table. Or, if you're us, you get ready to take it with you but are too excited to wait and end up eating it in the car. read more

Are there any gluten free options available or GF bread for the sandwiches to be made on?
Yes! All of our sandwiches can be put on Gluten Free bread!
Is the meat kosher or halal? Or beef by creekstone farms?
Our meat is not halal or kosher. Though we do offer plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, which would be considered kosher and halal.
Do you still do specials?
Literally all the damn time! We don’t necessarily have one every day, but you can totally check out our Instagram for updates. We always post our specials there! You can also find them on our online menu when we are running them, of course.
Is the CSG Sawce vegan?
Why can't I order breakfast sandwiches online through their website? It only shows their lunch sandwiches.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on our business, breakfast is currently only being served on weekends, from 9am to 11:15am. All orders must be placed for “ASAP” and cannot be scheduled for an advance pickup or delivery.
Anyone know if they make their own honey oat bread or source it from somewhere else? I'm slightly addicted to it 😬
