I followed his instructions, only to find there was no option to add the birthday message, despite him assuring me there would be. When I called back to clarify, he promised he made a note to include it. Fast forward to me trekking across NYC during a snowstorm from Roosevelt Island, no less, because their delivery option wasn't available when I needed it before my daughter's party. After all that, the cake wasn't even ready and had nothing written on it. And to make matters worse? When I later called another Milk Bar location, they confirmed everything the manager told me was false. This location hosts a small interior, with barely any room for a line. Accent lighting and black subway tile along the front counter maintain a chic vibe. A short, narrow counter for indoor indulgence is pressed against the dessert-collaged left wall, while swooshes of bright pink and branded neon lighting fixtures pop against the black-and-white walls. The kitchen area is a labyrinth of tightly packed carts and appliances. Contemporary pop plays moderately loudly throughout the space. I arrived this past weekend to satisfy a mid-afternoon sweet tooth, finding myself in a queue behind a surprising number of patrons. Unfortunately, the service was slow and unprofessional. One employee snapped at customers, while another sat to the side indifferently taking a personal call. Once I finally was able to order, I opted for the Greatest Hits combo: Cereal Milk Soft Serve w/ Cornflake Crunch, a Compost Cookie, 3 B'Day Truffles, and a slice of Milk Bar Pie. The soft serve was immediately reminiscent of its namesake cereal milk but slightly sweeter with a pleasant, butterscotch finish. The cornflakes are a must, providing a nice crisp. Further, I appreciated that the staff scooped flakes into the bottom of the cup before pouring the soft serve, so I didn't have to ration them. The truffles had sugar cookie dough taste and texture, with extra birthday cake flavored oomph. The compost cookie has an oatmeal base loaded with chocolate chips, pretzels, potato chips, graham crackers, coffee, oats, and butterscotch. Mine had a perfectly soft and chewy texture; however, I felt the crazy combination of mix-ins was overkill because I couldn't pick out any individual one. Finally, the signature Milk bar pie was chewy and sweet, greasy with a honeylike residue (like less flaky baklava). I echo some of the comments that Milk Bar errs on the overly sweet side. I'm a huge sweet tooth, but I still found myself parched halfway into my feast. The $23 charge for my items admitted small-to-tiny items resonated more with a sit-down meal than a takeout dessert. The workers were very kind and I noticed a small statement on their counter regarding their sensitivity towards previous menu item names and I really admired their accountability. There's a lot of initiative and integrity here. I ordered the cereal milk soft serve cup with corn flakes for about $8. Initially, the soft serve is pretty tough to get through with the spoon but it's not necessarily a resistant toughness: it's more like ensuring that the soft serve doesn't melt away the second you pick it up. After a minute or so, you get this beautiful texture that allows your spoon to glide across the cup and it's one of the most satisfying things I've ever experienced. The soft serve had a very reserved sweetness and the corn flakes were also a nice touch. On their own, the corn flakes were pretty hard to chew but their flavor was almost worth the effort. As constituents, the soft serve and the corn flakes were great but I felt that they didn't exactly agree with each other the best that they could. Maybe some small tweaks in the recipe can improve that, but as it is it's still very worth the purchase. When I went to pick it up at the store, two girls sat behind the counter chatting - no acknowledgement whatsoever of the fact that a customer was in their store. When I finally got their attention, I told them I had a pick-up order and gave them my name. One girl hurriedly rummaged through a few bags and handed one to me without confirming the order number or even my name. I looked inside and saw that it was a red velvet cheesecake, so I left, assuming it was my order. When I got home, I realized that this was NOT my cake. For one, it said "Happy Birthday Dad!" on it (this was, to reiterate, a cake I bought for my wife for Valentine's Day). On top of that, the cake looked like it had seen much better days. The toppings were crushed and broken, the cake was completely shifted off the base to the edge of the box, and the bottom layers were deformed. This was not a fresh cake... I don't know when this person's dad's birthday was, but it sure as hell wasn't in February. I ended up putting this cake in the garbage where it belongs. Came here on July 4 to grab a cake for my daughter's birthday party. I didn't really know what to expect but i knew their cookies were amazing since i have had one before at a birthday party.
