I have been coming to the MV Market for some years now. They have a great selection of wine, beer and hard liquor. And most importantly for me, they have a great salad bar. That's why I was shocked when three weeks ago I got severely food poisoned by the mayonaisey broccoli cole slaw they had. Within an hour I was flat on my back with severe intestinal distress, which lasted fully three days while I was traveling. Since I was traveling when all this went down I did not get a chance to report this back to the MV Market. I wasn't going to make a big stink but I felt I should say something just so they knew. So tonight I went in, as I always do on Wednesday nights, filled up my salad bar box with non-mayonaise items and went to check out. Quietly, so as not to make a big deal, I said to the check out guy, "hey, I just wanted to let you know that I got severely food poisoned here a few weeks ago." Without skipping a beat he simply said, "well, nobody else did." He paused for a minute, waiting to see what I would say and then added, "you know, I'm just saying." I was speechless. I had expected something like "wow, I'm so sorry that happened to you. I'll definitely let the deli manager know. I haven't heard about this from anyone else but I'm really sorry." But nope, he simply repeated the same thing back to me, the obvious implication being "well, it couldn't have been us. I'm not saying you're making it up but it's definitely not our problem. Goodbye..." It didn't occur to him that maybe since I come in towards the end of the day I was the last person to eat the stuff and cleaned out the rest of it when it had just gone bad. Or maybe that others simply didn't bother complaining. Or whatever. There was no concern at all that someone got violently ill for three days after eating one of their items. Very disappointing to me since until now I liked eating there. Thing is, anyone can make a mistake but to treat a person who got so ill so dismissively is incredibly poor form. At any rate, be sure to avoid anything with mayo in it at that salad bar. And if you do and something happens don't bother mentioning it to anyone. Call the Health Dept. instead. read more

If I was to live in a grocery store, this would be the one. It pretty much has everything I need to be happy: 1) A delicious delicatessen - One of the things I love about Marin, is all the great places to get a sando. Mill Valley Market is one of those places. Some of their specialty combos rival the great sandwich places of the North Bay. 2) A huge selection of prepared food - I happen to be quite lazy when it comes to preparing dinner. I always wait until I'm hungry before rummaging through the fridge for some munchies. Because of this I tend to use the Microwave far more often than the stove or oven, and let's just face it, "Hungry Man" dinners get kinda boring. Mill Valley Market combats this by offering up a sh*t ton of freshly prepared food I can take home, from spanish and italian dishes, to an amazing soup and salad bar. I've tried a lot of their prepared food, and haven't been disappointed yet. 3) A wonderful selection of booze - Nothing makes me want to drink more than the ridiculous yuppies that have taken over the quaint town of Mill Valley like a zombie infestation. Mill Valley Market offers a huge selection of unique beers, wine, and hard alcohol, that helps me forget the impending Mill Valley Gucci/BMW zombie apocalypse. So if you are feeling too lazy to cook tonight, or you just want to steer clear of some of the heavily infested yuppie-zombie organic stores of Mill Valley, check this place out. I should warn you though, most of the stuff is more expensive than you'll get at a chain supermarket. read more

Evidently I've become one of those yelpers who only gives 5-star reviews. Please understand, this is not because I eat rainbows and shit unicorns - I just can't be bothered to write a 'meh' review. (Honest.) I have to admit, I've only been to the Mill Valley Market once, but it had been built up to me by some Marinites, so I went in with high expectations. Upon reading the first item on the specials board, I knew what I wanted: mustard glazed ham sandwich with gruyere, etc. All ingredients were top notch, at 6.99 the price was worth every penny (especially by the San Francisco FiDi standards I am used to), and the sandwich had respectable heft. Most importantly, it was so good that as I was eating it, I was worried that I would want another after I was done. A final word about the attention to detail here: Your sandwich is not cut in half, but instead cut into two unevenly sized pieces, leaving you three portion options: little piece, big piece, or the whole goddamn thing. While visiting CA and staying in Mill Valley, this was one of my favorite places. If I had known, I would have gotten breakfast, lunch and dinner here! Before hiking through Muir Woods one morning, my friend and I stopped here to get breakfast and stock up on a picnic lunch. I actually decided to get breakfast here because I refused to pay $5 for a yogurt at the cafe across the street. Instead, I grabbed a $1 locally-made yogurt from the fridge and hardboiled eggs - all less than $5. :) Even though it was 7 or 8 in the morning, our sandwiches were made with friendly service. I ordered the special Three Wells lemon chicken sandwich with gluten-free bread, which held up nicely (and smelled sooo fragrant and lemon-y) throughout the hike and right up until consumed. My friend custom-made her sandwich, and she said in retrospect, the MVM people probably know best and she should have gotten a specialty sandwich. We also got two sides to share from the pre-made salad bar: a cucumber feta salad and a rice pilaf salad. Both were delicious, flavorful and also held up nicely in our backpacks until lunch time. Heads up to travelers: they have a $.25 bag fee, but luckily being an inner-Californian I had roll-up reuseable totes with me. Highly recommend! read more

No matter how busy MVM is... no matter how many customers they have waiting.... no matter what is going on their employees are always great. THEY GIVE GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. They have a wonderful produce department, meat department, wine selection and their Deli and selections they offer in the deli are simply a 12 on a scale of 1 - 10. As I said above.... Hey, don't forget about the wine department. Doug Canepa (co-owner of MV Mkt with his brother Dave, 3rd generation to do so) is great and has fantastic, knowledgeable staff. Doug's the head wine guy. They have deep relationships with lots of small producers and distributors dedicated to the art of producing great wines. Want an impressive brand so that people will ooh and ahh at your savoir faire? They probably have it or can get it. BUT, what impresses me much more is that they have lesser known wines from around the world that are produced often in small quantities and which don't cost a fortune but are often much more interesting. And, they don't waste precious shelf space for pedestrian, mass market brands. Whatever your budget they'll find something to meet it and probably surprise you. I drink a lot of really good, under $20 bottles from this place, and of course, they're always ready to help me splurge. Bravo, keep it up Doug, Skip, Mike and Marcie! read more

Well you tell me. I ordered a Reuben sandwich, and the sandwich maker asked me what I wanted on it. "UH-OH" I thought, because anyone who knows a Reuben wouldn't ask that. Reuben sandwiches are made one way.Corned beef, saurkraut, swiss cheese and Russian dressing, grilled on rye. There are no add-ons. I got home, tore it open, because now I am famished. I pull the top piece of bread off. Lettuce, tomato and onion? On my Reuben. Are you kidding me? I am a long way from from Manhattan, aren't i? So, when I tore off my "add-ons", all was very fresh, but not grilled, yet was made nicely. I had a nice lunch. read more

We needed a same day/ LAST-minute gift basket created and delivered to a close friend who lives in Mill Valley (which occurred after an 'internet' service dropped-the-ball on an order we had placed earlier in the week). Great place to stop for lunch while on a bike ride through beautiful Mill Valley. We got some sandwiches and enjoyed them out in the sun. Their beer and wine selection is fabulous! I wish this market was close to my house! The service is very friendly and cheerful. The prices are in line with Mill Valley...but the product quality is high so it is definitely worth it. Great market. Small selection but high quality. (Must confess I was a bit disappointed by their bite-sized chocolate selection, though.) Produce is good. Lots of organics, natural foods and products throughout the store. Great deli. Nice wine shop. When I worked in downtown Mill Valley, this was my go-to lunch stop ... and with the deli right in the middle of the wine shop, I often walked out with a brown bag to take home, too. I don't get it. I don't think I would ever go here for the groceries. Everything seemed very small and way out of my scope. I felt the need to dress up when I shop here. I was tempted to ask the cashier if they could give me directions to the nearest Costco. or Safeway. Then, I imagined the cashier saying, "NO! NEVER!" Next, 3 angry men would drag me away kicking and screaming, put me in pillory stocks and the people currently shopping will come out of the woodwork with sticks on fire and an angry mob mentality ready to watch me suffer, be burned at the steak or stoned to death for asking for directions. Its a union store, which I like. They have a wide selection of hard to find wine, scotch, chocolates and assorted candies. The sandwiches are wonderful, the soups are good and even a wheat free vegan can find a soup that will suit them most days of the week (they have 5 a day). The price is the only reason they don't get 5 stars. They aren't bad for Marin prices, but I live in the east bay and work in Mill Valley...and it's always a case of sticker shock every day I purchase lunch there. read more

Ah yes, Mill Valley Market. when i lived here for whatever reason i rarely explored in here. Recently i have explored this store more and am so glad i did. Lets start with their INCREDIBLE produce--wow!! so fresh looking, seasonal, locally grown, delicious, organic/ or not ... depending on what you want, and just really high quality produce. that being said, they offer fantastic local products, hot sauce, La Kitchenita bone broths, Wild West sauerkraut, Marin Living Foods nut milk/juices. and the last fun thing they offer are great, unusual candies.. really fun as gifts or for yourself. its expensive at Mill Valley Market, but well worth the price. The produce and the local foodmakers products are what keep me coming in here.. oh and last but certainly not least... the cashiers are super cool & funny. read more

Living in Mill Valley for over a decade and i never walked into the Mill Valley Market. I always drove past thinking....hmmm looks nice i wonder what wonders are inside. Mill Valley Market is beautiful on the inside and the outside. Walking in, one is surrounded by a clean, organized and welcoming market of goodies. They have just about everything you could need, plus an amazing deli, which can output some serious sandwiches. I recommend the Stinson Sandwich. Its a Tuna (albacore) Nicioise Sandwhich with Hard Boiled Egg, Capers, Kalamata Olives, Lettuce and Tomato. Park on blithedale avenue near Stefano's pizza and walk on over to this jewel of Mill Valley. You will not be disappointed. read more

The way it ought to be. A truly classy market staffed by an intelligent, likable, professional staff - not just kids in-between semesters or saving for new rims for their car. Hard to find nowadays. The deli is terrific - salads are homemade and unique, sandwich combinations are creative and make your mouth water. Wine selection - fantastic. Cheese selection is small, but the selection is outstanding. The Meat dept is first rate, as is the produce section. When you walk in, you know immediately your'e in a small, working, honest-to-goodness family grocery store . So refreshing! It beats everyone else hands down. read more

When I returned to Mill Valley after a fruitless 6 years in college (with the exception of finding my beautiful, wonderful partner of 10 years and counting), I remember walking into the Market and thinking, "Jeez. Nice selection. 28 different olive oils. Where are the Krispy Kreme? This place sucks." Fast forward 10 years and I truly appreciate this place more and more. I like it for many reasons. When you're talking about what amounts to a dressed-up convenience store, it really is the cream of the crop. And I don't mean that denigratingly. I would rather have that than have to jump in my car, drive down Miller to Safeway and pick up whatevah I happen to need. They also are locally owned and operated. That is actually huge for me. I'm always down to pay the indie a little more (or a lot more) than I would normally agree to pay The Man. The wine guys are very knowledgeable, and they have a real history with many of the vineyards in our area. Like REAL relationships, not just through their wine rep's catalog book. The deli is solid. The sandwiches are serviceable. The prepped food in the cooler is where it's at. If you feel like blowing your paycheck on some delicious dolmas, I'm definitely not going to stop you. In fact, I'm going to convince you to buy 6 more and then when you're not looking, I'll be all up in your kitchen stealing your dolmas. Wow. I need to go to sleep. Meat/fish department is tasty. Pricey, but hey, now I'm sounding redundant. I think I (and everyone else) have covered that point. Produce is good. I know vintage stuff is expensive, but I don't think that just because a fruit has the word "heirloom" in it my first-born child should need to pack his bags for the MVM orphanage. No, artard, I did not make a mistake. A toemawtoe is a froot, fruit. Their prepped meals are tasty, super easy (unless you don't know how to use a microwave for anything other than sterilizing your testicles..), and less expensive than blowing $10 on a tedious Grilly's burrito. Which I've done way too frequently. Why am I addicted to Mexican food? Do they put crack in the flour? I'd like to see an ingredient list. Whenever I roll into a Mexican joint, they're always pulling those tortillas out of clear, unmarked bags. They must get them shipped in from Columbia. But I digress. Again. Bite the bullet. Pay a little more. Use less gas. Patronize a local business. Save the planet. Oh, and don't forget to save the cheerleader. Except if they happen to be one of those annoying Dallas cheerleaders on CMT. Don't ask me why I know about that show. PS. There will be a day in the future where I will come in to the Market and grab that bottle of 50 year old olive oil (or is it vinegar? Damn Alzheimer's) that costs a hundred bucks and pay for it. I've thought about stealing it before, but the church I went to as a kid is literally within a stone's throw and I'm pretty sure the spire is a secret, fully-functioning Tesla coil (of the deadly God Variety) and it will lightningbolt me to death as I walk out the store. Mill Valley Market grows their own organic lettuce which is the most gorgeous lettuce you'll ever see -- even compared to the local and amazing Farmer's Markets here in Marin. Their butcher has local, pasture-raised, pasture-finished meats that taste like REAL FOOD. They also have sustainably-harvested fish. Where else can you go to get traditional brands and Marin-type foods like kombucha and fermented root veggies as well as a good bottle of Chassange Montrachet? I moved to Mill Valley four years ago and became an instant fan of this gem of a market. read more

Mill Valley Market takes the word "specialty" to the next level. I was in town visiting from Sacramento, and my friend and I stumbled upon this spot while visiting the Tyler Florence's Shop. I must say they have an immense selection of pretty much anything you would need to make an extraordinary dinner or even grab a few deli sandwiches, a bottle of wine and head back over to Tiburon to watch the sunset behind the Bay. It's refreshing to see that a small town grocery store is still "making it" in the midst of all the Safeway's, Whole Foods etc. popping up these days. The employees are helpful, friendly, and amazingly, wear aprons, (which seem to be a dying grocery store identifier these days). Cashiers and grocery clerks in the big chain stores these days look like transients with their logo'd, over-worn polo shirts and sloppy presentation. The cheese, deli, and wine selections are outstanding, and Mill Valley Market will most likely make my "unique" date destination spot in the future. The prices didn't seem that much higher, considering you are technically in a small bay town and the selection and convenience they are providing are second to none. The next closest place with comparable quality is Whole Foods and that is a few miles back towards the freeway. read more

Ahoy ! I've always liked the food here and now I'm elated. Just found out they are carrying Clean Fish fish, including Fisherman's Daughter prawns. I don't care that this is 4th of July weekend and that traffic will be Hell. I'm going over there tomorrow and stocking up. I also like that this market was the first I saw to carry that locally made granola. Its called From the Fields. I pretty much always like the shopping experience here although some of the cashiers are rather strange and attitudnal. But I'm not deducting stars . . .as we all know, here today gone tomorrow. There is almost nothing I love more than a quaint family owned high end market so Mill Valley Market and I were destined to be bff's. I'm not the biggest fan of the town of Mill Valley, so I like that the market actually helps me like Mill Valley more. It's chock full of stuff you can't find elsewhere and the deli section is a score. I think that my favorite bit of all is how nice and friendly everyone who works there is. Although there was this one worker who exclaimed "Whoa!" when I was a million months pregnant and came across him in an aisle. I was caught off guard but I was so big I probably would have done the same if i was him. I forgive you mister, it's probably hard to be you, I'll not add anything more to your overfilled plate. Make no mistake. Mill Valley Market can be pricey, but it is worth it. The selection of exotic and high end stuff is fantastic. A hundred different olive oils from everywhere on earth. The same with vinigars. Hundreds of mustards and jams, many of which you will never see anywhere else. Coffees , teas, cookies. An outstanding meat department, and if your recipe calls for some rare cut of meat, or perhaps you need a goose? Just give them a days notice. The beer and wine department is equally outstanding. Also a fine source for top of the line single malt Scotch, Cognac and Armanac, $100 Tequila's, and my personal favorite, Hanger One Vodka. They have a policy of always opening up a new check out line if there are more then three people in line. The same people have been working there for the 20 years I have shopped at Mill Valley Market, so there is a nice family vibe about the store. Great Deli too! read more

I came here on my way to Mt. Tam with my boyfriend to get some sandwiches. When I first walked in the store, I had no idea where to turn first. I thought it was going to be just another local market with fresh produce and overpriced goods, but it was huge and had an impressive selection of anything I could have thought of. The awe wore off enough to let us find the deli area and I was blown away again by the deli/alcohol section. Everything at the salad and hot bars looked amazing but we decided to stick with sandwiches. They were reasonably priced and of course, there was Dutch crunch, so how could I say no? I love that there are so many different choices of sandwiches as well as daily specials. I can't wait to go back again the next time I'm near Mill Valley to try another sandwich, crafted to perfection! read more

A delicious specialty market with an eclectic assortment of goods from around the world, combined with probably the best deli sandwiches in Mill Valley. And if you're a wine and/or beer fan, they've got you covered -- the beer wall is especially well curated. On a nice day, I like to go here with friends, pick up some sandwiches and some drinks, hike over to Cascade Falls, and enjoy the scene. You're going to pay for that selection as with any specialty market, but I'm A-OK with that if that means this wonderful community grocer keeps doing its thing. read more

A meat department either makes or breaks a store. MVM has one of the best butcher shops in Marin County. The service is excellent and the prices are not too bad. Go for the t-bone steaks next time you are in the store (and don't overcook them). The rest of the market is very good too. Good deli, wine and produce but the meat dept. rocks. read more

For as long as I can remember Mill Valley Market has provided the best selection at the best prices. At one point I actually compared them to every grocery store in Mill Valley for certain set items and they won, hands down. From the friendly, KNOWLEDGABLE service, to the unbelievable variety and normally hard-to-find items, Mill Valley Market can't be beat. And, to top it off, they must treat their staff and good as they treat their customers, because most the same people have been there since I started shopping there in the 70s or 80s.
