this is one of the last remaining old-fashioned family-owned grocery store/delis in the area. We go several times a week. Their produce is so very fresh and some of it they grow on their very own farm in Sonoma. The meat and fish department is superb. their deli makes the most delicious sandwiches that you can order ahead online. They have all sorts of delicious gourmet items that are hard to find elsewhere, such as mustard and pickles and various sauces. They also support a lot of local businesses. In addition, they have a wonderful assortment of gluten-free items. Highly recommend! read more

Growing up I always referred to this place as Mill Valley markup. And while it's true it may be a bit more expensive than Safeway, I have consistently been impressed by the selection, the quality and the customer service. I've decided the consistency of those factors makes it worth paying slightly more for while supporting a locally owned business. Also it is easily my favorite deli counter for sandwiches or prepared foods in Southern Marin. Their egg salad is my favorite. And when I need a wine or whiskey recommendation for gifts they are always very helpful without being condescending. My in-laws sent me a gift basket from Mill Valley Market for my birthday. It was absolutely wonderful selection of goodies chosen by the staff. I didn't even know they had that service! But I'll be using in the future. read more

I really enjoyed the sandwiches at the deli counter and the price is very reasonable ($10.99 for a special sandwich). It's a great option to pack on your way to Muir Woods. I ordered the special sandwich called Hoo Koo E Koo: Grilled balsamic chicken breast, onion jam, garlic mayo, organic greens, tomato. I'm already a fan of shopping here... but Mill Valley Market also boasts one of the best catering departments in Marin. I've worked with them on 3 events in the past year, and they hit it out of the park each time. I recently hosted a little happy hour at a nearby nail salon for about 40 guests. We ordered an assortment of hors d'oeuvres to serve at the event. And we're not talking chips & dip or pigs in a blanket. These guys provided our group with a myriad of gourmet treats (and for a very reasonable price). Some of the stand-out bites included: the Shrimp Salad in Cucumber Cups; the Capresse on a toothpick (fresh mozzarella balls with cherry tomato & basil); the Filo cups filled with Moroccan chicken (my personal favorite); and the Prosciutto wrapped melons with mint. I also picked up 3 dozen mini cupcakes and a big bag of ice. Total bill $190. True story. I fed 40 Yelpers for 2 hours for under $200. That's almost unheard of. Service was prompt and friendly. There were no day-of-the-event surprises. If you're planning a party (either large or small), I would highly recommend Mill Valley Market's catering. They certainly deliver plenty of gourmet bang for your buck! read more

How can a market this small have everything I need? Wonderful service, great food choices. I would ask for nothing more.

Was visiting from New Mexico and needed to bring items for a party we were attending in town. I was able to go online, review what was available from their Catering Department and order 3 party trays 2 weeks in advance, Artisan Local Cheeses, Veggie Tray w/Dip and a Pate Tray. We picked them up 1/2 hour in advance and were really impressed by the care in preparation and appearance of the trays (really beautiful and tasty looking.) There was even an additional tray of crackers and bread. These were a huge hit at the party, particularly the cheese and pate! Welppp....go in there today, casually browsed the bakery goods...picked up a berry pie in a plastic container..and see white fuzzy mold spots on the top of it. We loaded up on groceries here before our jam/hooping session in the Mill Valley hills. Mill Valley Market pretty much had it all. With a slew of organic produce, dairy free products, and even gluten free items as well - they are obviously familiar with the evolving food climate of the North Bay. We ended up grabbing some small bites from their charming deli. One of my friends ordered an incredible sounding sandwich with freshly sliced turkey, while another splurged on their hot buffet style items - such as macaroni and cheese, chicken curry, and a healthy sounding farro salad. I stuck to some minimalistic quinoa items. Though their deli food can get pricey, it appears to be fresh (thought their seafood dish was definitely too fishy tasting for me), and the whole space is well organized, and run by friendly staff. I definitely prefer Good Earth when it comes to selection and quality of prepared and packaged foods, but MVM still remains a bright gem in darling Mill Valley. Trust. read more

I'm willing to shell out five stars for this place based on ONE visit because they are really that AWESOME at Mill Valley Market! A friend and I popped in en route to the Tennessee Valley Trailhead. Lacking supplies at home for a proper sandwich, I thought this grocery might have some nibbles for me to pack along. When I first entered, I wasn't excited about the pedestrian flow - you have to go to the left by the produce section - or - to the right along the ends of the cash registers. Without knowing the layout of the place, I went forward and after produce past brightly lit cases of meat that made me want to turn around and run back out screaming. I forged on, making the turn past the refrigerated section, peeking down the aisles and then reached the baked goods. The idea of a sandwich again came to mind, and so I kept going down the aisle, wondering if the store had a deli section. At the end of that aisle, I faced an open cooler section with cheeses and a ramp down to the lower section of the store: a deli counter and wine shop! It wasn't even 8am and the ladies at the deli counter were so incredibly nice - they greeted and answered questions while working on other orders (like normal people do who care about their customers!). I asked about a particular item and they pulled out a package for me to inspect - thus - an order was born: $6.99 for a fantastic Wildwood tofu burger/avocado/red onion/pickle sandwich on rosemary foccacia done in the panini press much to my delight. That thing was HUGE (I ate the first half for breakfast and the other half for lunch). I asked about vegan baked goods since they had a pile of goodies near the deli counter and one of the ladies came out to check things over with me and make suggestions. As I made my way back to the cash registers - I felt like a deer in the headlights when I encountered the first display of CHOCOLATE! And then... MORE CHOCOLATE! And then EVEN MORE CHOCOLATE!! I'd say that place has 400 linear feet of chocolate - plus piles of different caramels (non vegan) and there are plenty of vegan candy options (and lots of gluten free stuff). Great place for specialty goods, stocking up for a gourmet picnic or hiking lunch. Next time I go for a hike anywhere near Marin, I will just plan to go buy my lunch goodies at Mill Valley Market. What a great find in quaint little Mill Valley. This store is packed with interesting, cool & novel food items not to be found just about anywhere else. Being in Mill Valley, the prices for everything are, of course, elevated above prices found in stores located in lower per capita income zip codes. So, definitely pick up any novelty items that pique your interest, fancy, or whimsy, but leave more common staples to be purchased at your warehouse club store of choosing. For the girlfriend & I, on this visit, part of our haul included: San Marzano canned tomatoes, the Original Tiger Sauce & a big ol' tub of dry powder wasabi from a company in Santa Cruz. There were so, so many more items of interest that didn't make it into the basket this time that a return trip to this nifty little market is definite. read more

Set on a gentle sloping hill with hints of Tudored exterior, kiddie-corner from Tyler Florence's amazing store, across the street from a church, and in utopic Mill Valley is a great secret of a market! Lovely selection of higher-end and specialty foods... loved trying out the hot foods on the side of the store that houses all the wine (and the bathroom.. fyi!) I spotted that they sell Tate's from NY---I love their wonderful cookies that come 6 to a bag.... first tried on my vacation in western CT. Butcher counter was very fresh... wine selection was nice, as was their cheese case. Cozy, small-sized, inviting, clean, bright, and the inventory is smashing! read more

We love this place. It's such an Aladdin's cave of epicurean delights from around the world. Folks say it's pricey in there, but it's not too bad, no more than WFoods. So unfriendly that it's hard to believe they rely on tourism. We had two different people hovering and asking us if they could help us and not in any sort of helpful way either. I got the impression that this is one of those businesses that relies on tourist dollars, but adamantly resents it. Their wine selection was just okay and 30% more expensive than our own specialty wine shop at home, for the exact same wines, wines that are local to northern California and not to us. Family owned market- they scrutinize every product and fruit/vegetable they sell. Their MVM prepared items are a life saver and don't taste like they're premade. Balsamic chicken to meatballs or salads; if I'm tired my kids can still have warm, well prepared food. They're super respectful of my service animal; I always buy him bones from the butcher. And their meat, seafood is fantastic. Generally higher priced than other places but the quality and service substantiates the price. read more

Great place for curated food. MVM even grows their own vegetables (which are awesome). Pro shopping tip: Try the Mole Chicken in the hot food area within the deli section. The new cook (Josefina) knocked it out of the park.. and if you know anything about Mole, it takes hours to prepare and slow cook and very few restaurant know how to make Mole properly.. yet MVM does! I still love this market, especially during this virus. They were taking temperatures of guests for awhile prior to entering the store, and I thought that was great. During the initial few weeks of the SIP, their food order/pickup service was great! Really appreciated this. Something has changed in the kitchen though - the chicken enchiladas now have ground up chicken (ugh) instead of small pieces, and I just had lasagna, which now has precooked sliced sausage instead of ground sausage. Mill Valley Market is a throwback to a much, much earlier period in history, before the ranch houses populating the hills near 101 and the town becoming a woodsy hideaway for the rich and uber-rich. This is no Safeway. It has the food you need to feed the family. Small store, so smallish selection of produce. Cramped aisles. And it also has the out of the ordinary, the custom brands, the things you can't find anywhere else. Separate room for the wine and the deli. Hot lunch available to-go (mmmm, spicy chicken gumbo). Their website allows you to order a sandwich and pick it up later. I did this, planning to eat lunch before tackling the Dipsea Trail. I quickly realized that Mill Valley Market has taken on the flavor (literally) of being in the most stereotypical Marin city in the county. The special sandwiches are named after local landmarks (Hoo Koo E Koo is a popular trail), with ingredients such as Albacore Tuna Nicoise, Kalamata Olives, Arugula, Lemon and Garlic Aoili, Raw Veggie Hummus, and Emmentaller Cheese . . . aaaaaaaaaa, I'm not *that* adventurous. I stuck with making my own ham sandwich with several other additions. $8 for the sammy, add the kettle chips and soda and the total was around $11. Not bad; you'd spend more to go to a typical Mill Valley restaurant and the taste was just as good. I wrote that I'd be there at 11:15, I was there early, and it was ready at 11:05. You can call in your order too, but I can't help but remember Wolfman Jack on "American Graffiti", placing a call for a "secret agent spyscoop", and the man on the other end heard "pletho-ray on a stethoscope???" Better go online instead. A good place to get food, or to just browse and see what Marinites say is normal. read more

I've been wanting to stop at this market for a while now every time we drive through Marin. Finally yesterday we did on our way to Muir Beach. We ordered our sandwiches ahead of time on their website, both of them were custom orders. Mine was a roasted turkey sandwich on gluten free sliced bread and the other was a roast beef sandwich on a sweet roll. The deli counter offers very customizable options of condiments and you can put as little or as many as you want, they do have premium toppings that do cost extra such as bacon avocado jalapeños and cucumbers, but that is pretty standard for sandwich places. The market itself is surprisingly large and offers a large selection of health conscious food and an impressive wine beer and spirits collection. Other things that I purchased at the market were gluten free rice crackers, fresh fruit salad from the deli's salad bar, a half bottle of Mantanzas Creek Sauvignon Blanc and a bourbon cider. All were very good and made our beach trip that much more enjoyable. I can't wait to go back and try other sandwich options! read more

For close to 3 years, I have come to Mill Valley Market to pick up lunch. Their quality has worsen at an accelerated pace. Day after day, I am tempted to get their hot chicken soup. Unfortunately, the lid of the soup pot collapses into the soup EVERY time a customer tries to gets soup. I will spare you the photo, but today I saw a lady reach her entire hand into the soup to grab the lid. Her ENTIRE hand. The whole soup was contaminated. Note, this has been going on for 3 YEARS. Now today I gently mention to Doug. Rather than tell me he will fix the issue (Doug: google hot pot with standard lid), he tells me there is no solution. That a solution for lids collapsing into soup does not exist. And that people don't really put their hands into the soup, just a little bit into the soup to get the lid. Doug - wake up call, your customers think it is absolutely disgusting. To help your cause, I saw about a 100 results on google for a new pot. Here is a website with about a dozen solutions.
