Yawn. Just another one of many sushi places in a mini-mall. The solid Yelp reviews called my name to venture out. Besides, good Yelp pals Aurian Z and Kelly F rated it 5.0 stars. I had to go. On a Monday night, it was bustling, with great energy and vibe. Good sign of things to come. The menu is certainly sushi-filled, but other Japanese specialties too: udon, rice bowls, teriyaki, and lastly (and mostly), Shabu Shabu -- kicking Minato Sushi beyond into another awesome category rarely found in these parts of town. My gf and I ordered a smattering of items: Jalapeno Poppers [$9.50, 5.0 stars], AAA Roll [$12.95, 5.0 stars], Oh Baby Roll [$11.50, 4.5 stars], Baked Butter Fish [$12.50, 2.0 stars], and Nigori Sake [$12.50, 4.5 stars]. I simply LOVE it. All of our rolls were super fresh and amazing, the Butter Fish served with a few octopus tentacles (with onions and peppers) was inedible, way overcooked and tough. Service was a plus, very helpful and kind. Definitely going back for more rolls, they have many different and creative choices, and my all-time favorite -- Shabu Shabu. Will it become my go-to Sushi spot? We will see. Sumo (Newbury Park) has a better overall experience, but the Sushi is on-par or better thus far. I eat a lot of sushi, let's say at least once or twice a week. I tired Minato sushi today and it was a total disaster. When I sat down my chair was sticky and the restaurant smelled like a hospital. The albacore was fishy and the rolls were over sauced, falling apart piles of mush. The other issue was the complete lack of concern on the part of the staff. I felt more like they thought I was a crazy person rather than a valued customer having a less than great experience in their establishment. There are some great sushi restaurants in this area but this is not one of them. Don't waste your time or money here. read more

So disappointed! As a long time patron, since the very first week of opening (yes), I have seen many changes in the evolution of Minato and can no longer defend this establishment and it's inefficiency. For the last 5 years I have done my best to support Minato through all the difficulties, inconveniences and inconsistencies offered, but I can no longer support a business that provides such blatant disregard to the customer. Minato needs to change their operation in regards to service immediately as it's long overdue. To operate with the perception that the customer does not matter enough to eliminate the consistent, ongoing mistakes provided by the etiquette lacking poor table service, is just poor business. For too long this has been a problem, a problem that the service manager or owner(s) do not wish to admit and correct. Perhaps Minato realizes that they are the only game on this side of town or perhaps they prefer to just not improve. I don't know, but here it is, your service is AWFUL and you need a team leader who is trained in the craft of proper table service and front end management. A team leader that will teach the staff how to appreciate the customer instead of the opposite. Know that you have lost another long time customer to Poke bowl across the street.....Yes, Poke Bowl .....it may not be sushi, but at least they are consistent. read more

This was my first time trying this place. The sushi was not great but it wasn't bad either. I think what really killed it for me was the service. The host the server and the busser ignored us but a female employee, that seemed to be a cook, helped us. At the end they never brought my mom her tea so I asked for it to go and we got it in a styrofoam cup and it was boiling hot so it was melting the cup. I'm pretty sure that's toxic lol. Definitely the best sushi restaurant in Thousand Oaks if not the best overall Japanese restaurant. The head chef gets the fish fresh every day so always top quality. The bento boxes are very good too and you can add the chef's choice sushi with them which I typically do. The interior is very nice and reminds me of traditional sushi bars in Japan. The rolls are very good of course, but I typically just order the nigiri special and trust the chef. Highly recommend. Also I see there are a bunch of 1 star reviews due to take out and am baffled (pandemic aside) why people are thinking sushi is takeout food. I've been here a few times now, and while the sushi is above average, I wouldn't consider it a favorite, nor would I go out of my way to eat here. Came here last night and ordered 2 tekka rolls (tuna rolls at $5/each), an Alaskan roll (~$11.95), a Hawaiian roll (~$11.95), an Albacore dipper (albacore sashimi ~$14.95), and a large Sapporo. Each table gets free edamame, which is a plus. Well, at least our table got free edamame. My favorites were the tuna rolls and the albacore dipper. The ponzu sauce on the sashimi was to die for. The albacore tasted fresh. The tuna rolls were standard, but came with generous chunks of tuna. If I were to go back, I would definitely order those 2 dishes again. The Hawaiian roll and Alaskan roll had too much sauce for me to really enjoy. The California roll underneath the Hawaiian tuna didn't taste particularly fresh, either. While both rolls were good, I think I would pass on the Alaskan roll next time (spicy tuna with salmon on top). The Hawaiian was my favorite of the two, though neither really stood out to me. All in all, we had a pretty good experience here. Parking is easy, abundant, and free, the service is nice and quick, and the ambiance is pretty standard for a sushi spot. We like Minato's quiet a bit. Good sushi, bentos, and udon. So why the low-average review? Packaging. The photo shows packaging for dinner for a family of four. The 25 minutes of pleasurable eating comes packaged in styrofoam that requires 500 years to biodegrade. Disappointed that they tried to be sneaky and charge us with something we didn't order... Went today with my friend and overall it was really good! The staff was really nice and friendly. The nigiri portions were so big which was nice, everything was fresh and delicious. The only complaint I have is they brought us a roll by mistake apparently but we didn't realize and they didn't realize until about 20 minutes later when we were basically finished and someone came by and said oh you didn't order this but you enjoy it. But then when we got the bill they had added it to the tab, a $15 sushi roll. I didn't have a chance to say anything because we were in a hurry by the time we had to leave so I handed her my card before reviewing the bill but when they brought it back to sign I noticed they added the extra roll at the bottom. I thought that was pretty rude of them especially considering we had already actually ordered so much as is. And typically when that happens the restaurant shouldn't penalize the customer for their own mistake; especially when someone came by and told us it was a mistake but to enjoy it anyways so I was shocked to see that they sneakily charged us anyways. So that's why I'm giving only 3 stars... a little disappointed with that, but I'm sure it's a management issue. I haven't had sushi in over a year! Gave birth 3 months ago and I've been anticipating a fantastic sushi dinner. Maybe I was expecting too much and wanted to be blown away. Unfortunately, this place did not blow me away. But it was OK. It was our first date night without baby. Came in for an early dinner on the eve of the Fourth of July and the place was still pretty empty. I didn't like how they had their menu set up, reminded me of ordering dim sum. We ordered the tsunami, futo magura, spider roll, salmon skin roll, hamachi sashimi, and some hot sake and beer. My favorite was the tsunami roll; the sesame oil and roasted garlic gave it a savory aroma and taste that I don't often experience in sushi. Everything else was just alright.
