my friends and i were really excited to try mindy's because so many people were ranting and raving about them. everything looked delicious at the counter. we all got bagels and a drink, and were confused that they gave us a cold, uncut bagel in a bag. upon asking the worker if they could slice it for us at the very least, we got an annoyed response stating the plastic knife on the other side of the counter will do a sufficient job. already annoyed that i have to pay $7 for this bagel bc creme cheese is a la carte, i was extra annoyed to see they have the POS system that asks for an additional tip. if your staff is already not going to fulfill the culinary services of your menu items to guests, then pay them a livable hourly wave! if we knew the workers were to give us sass upon asking them to cut or toast the bagels, we would have went to jewel, paid less, and not have been asked to answer a few questions at the screen below. while hoping the taste was worth the hassle, the pesto chive cream cheese makes up for its loss read more

I have to say that Mindy's bakery is worth the hype. I came at opening and waited in line which there is always a line. You could smell the baked goods which is always what I want in a bakery. There's a good variety of pastries and had to try a few. I got the ham and cheese croissant, quiche, coffee cake, and morning bun. My favorite was the ham and cheese croissant and the morning bun. The quiche was very good but the only thing is I wish the skin wasn't on the potato inside the quiche. Other than that, it was very delicious. As soon as we walked in, I was put in a trance from the amazing smells so I forgot to take pictures. I bought the lox cream cheese, giardianiera cream cheese, garlic challah bagel, funfetti cookie, and carrot cake slice. Everything was awesome. My daughter had a fun time trying to locate all the hidden rubber duckies. There is a drawer that says "open for treats" and it really does have treats. There were candies and chocolates inside, so be sure to check the drawer. read more

Stopped here after seeing Mindy on an episode of "Somebody Feed Phil". She seemed like a great person on the show so why not check out the bakery even though it wasn't actually featured in the show. What a shame!!! We arrived about 11:00am on a Sunday to find a line but it moved quick, maybe a 20 minute wait but worth every second. Stromboli was delicious! Smokey and savory with a flaky crust. Danish was not overly sweet, it was just right. Staff was friendly and kind. Had our snack on the little benches outside. Mindy's is a must-visit if you are in the Wicker Park area! The pastries are fresh and made with care. With inventive and creative flavors, you won't find another bakery exactly like it. Although the lines are often long, they move pretty quickly. It is quite small and crowded inside, so plan on taking your food to go. Personally, I do tend to find some pastries better than others. The strawberry kiwi streusel tart was exceptional with interesting and perfectly balanced flavors. The poached pear streusel tart, however, seemed too sweet and the delicate flavors were covered by heavy sugar and butter. I enjoyed the ham and gruyere croissant but will likely pass in the future. However, not all pastry lovers share the same taste, so this likely means there is something for everyone! Will definitely be back to try more. read more

Let me start by saying the customer service is excellent! However, the offerings are stunning- but lack flavor. I purchased a salami and pimento cheese danish- which looked like a piece of art. Unfortunately, it lacked flavor and coated the the mouth with a weird oil/grease coating. Worth the chilly wait :) we came Saturday morning after a work out class around 10:15 and only had to wait 10-15 minutes. The staff was so friendly and patient while I figured out what to order! I got the ham and cheese croissant, smoked salt bagel, za'taar bagel, loaded chocolate chip cookie, red velvet cupcake and a drip coffee. There are also a ton of gluten free options and even vegan options! Let me tell you, the chocolate chip cookie was the best I've ever had along with the ham and cheese croissant. Be warned!! The line at Mindy's runs deep. This is the kind of place locals know, love and frequent. That said, I found my time in line not too unpleasant, at least once I made it inside and out of the Chicago winter. A warm, friendly atmosphere awaited me. The front-of-house staff at Mindy's were all bright-eyed and engaging despite the early hour and seemingly eternal busyness. It's hard to imagine Mindy's not being packed. Food is good but pricey. Really annoyed with the tip screen. There is no service here. They put food in a bag and hand it to you. Why is their tip screen asking for 20% gratuity? Hello pastry heaven! Kept seeing this place all over my social media so I had to feed into the hype. I heard this place gets lines out the door. Luckily, I went super early on a weekday and it was raining so there was no line for me! First, the amount of pastries, bagels, drinks they have was so overwhelming to me. I just wanted to impulsively buy the entire store. Also the amazing aromas didn't make my choices easier. They have a wide variety of bagels, both sweet and savory pastries, as well as a drink menu. The uniqueness and presentation of their pastries is what sets them apart from other bakeries. I ended up choosing 4 pastries. The one that really WOW'd me was the s'mores croissant. I've never tasted anything like it before. It's definitely a more heavier pastry and best for those who have a killer sweet tooth. The best chocolate chip cookie in Chicago in my opinion! Slight crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. You can't go wrong with any goodies here though. Right now they are serving up their special hot cocoa with a giant marshmallow. The cocoa is rich and cozy and everything you need on a cold day. So far we've tried a bunch of pastries, the blueberry muffin, the morning bun, and bagels. Inside was super cute and looks like they have two rounds of baking - all of the items I got were from the First Bake. A great variety of pastries (savory and sweet) to choose from but ended up getting the special Baklava Twice-Baked Croissant, the Garlic Challah bagel with Chive cream cheese, their Seasonal Pumpkin Coffee Cake, the classic Biscuit and the Hot Fudge Babka. My favorite item was probably the bagel but honestly every single thing I got was delicious - SO TASTY! Probably the flakiest pastries I've had in all of Chicago. The prices weren't too out of the ordinary for these kinds of pastries but I wanted to try a lot so be prepared. Will definitely be coming back to try items from the Second Bake. Don't be disheartened by the wait, it's SO worth it once you get inside those doors. It's warm inside and the ambiance makes you feel comfortable and cozy. The service was also fantastic. The duck confit and apple butter croissant was definitely the winner. Flakey, buttery, and the duck confit is delicious. I wish there was more filling though. Does not meet the hype! The croissant was good but I've had better. It's not as laminated as the upscale/very true to french style croissant. It was still tasty. The bagels are good but a little bit too chewy. Definitely don't go expecting an NY bagel. The hot chocolate is a big let down. At 12 dollars, I would expect it to be phenomenal. It was deadly sweet. Like way too sweet. It made my teeth hurt sweet lol. I had some sips and chucked it. But seriously.... 12 dollars?!?!? I'm still thinking about it and mad that I spent that much on hot chocolate. Thankfully, the line was short and we were in and out in about 5 minutes. I honestly wish I could have ordered everything they had because everything looked and sounded SO good! We had a mixed experience with Mindy's Bakery, heading there for an early Sunday outing. We arrived a few minutes before opening, so the line was relatively short. We got in with the first group of people and chose two items for each of us: a ham and cheese croissant, gluten free danish, kouign amann, and a special bananas foster kolache. First the great: the croissant was fantastic. Given how much ham was in the middle, it was nearly a croissant breakfast sandwich. Very filling and delicious, with a good amount of mustard to add some extra zing. The kolache was also excellent. I'd also like to recognize great service from the staff. Besides being friendly and welcoming, the person helping us offered to change gloves before handling the gluten free item we ordered. Very thoughtful. The just good: the gluten free danish. While nice, it was lacking in flavor. The brutal disappointment: the kouign amann. First, it was huge - that should have been a red flag, but since these are one of my favorite pastries I couldn't resist. It was much closer to an unfrosted cinnamon roll (minus the cinnamon) than a kouign amman: layers of pastry inside that were pretty loose and didn't have the sugary crunch that I would have expected from laminating with both butter and sugar. It was also supposed to have a fruity sugar (pear, maybe?) but no flavor came through. Not sure what happened there. I'd definitely return for croissants and maybe kolache. The rest of what we tried was pretty uneven, especially given the high price point for many items. read more

Note: once they sell out for the day, they will close up shop. So highly recommend getting there sooner rather than later!! Everything is set up outdoors--so prepare for the weather! And possibly a line, depending on the time. All items are on display in the window...you walk up, peruse the offerings and place your order at the window and pay. It is an efficient and Covid-friendly operation. My husband and I like to come at least once a year around the holidays to stock up on hot chocolate mix for the season--and also treat ourselves. We last visited about a thousand years ago, and I remember wanting one of everything. The one thing that's most memorable - the hot chocolate was super rich. It was a seasonal lemon-something, and I was totally stupid and had multiple pastries, and probably a ham sandwich or something, and I paid dearly. Actually my wife was foolish too, and had a different hot chocolate (Mexican maybe?) that was also super rich. Barely made it back to the hotel room in time. I also remember mugs being bowl-sized, and I tried to finish it. So my next trip, maybe less of everything and focusing on just the hot chocolate may work better, but (at the time) each of the pastries we tried were excellent, and we bought some marshmallows to-go (first time I've ever said that sentence).
