Unfortunately, my second experience here...bringing my mom for Mother's Day ...was extremely disappointing because of the service. We initially had one server who brought us water and took our appetizer order, but then disappeared for quite some time without checking back in. At that point, I even went looking for a manager or hostess and couldn't find anyone available. Eventually, we were given a new server, but she came across as extremely rude and inattentive. What upset me most was the overall lack of communication and attentiveness throughout the experience. It made what was supposed to be a special Mother's Day outing feel frustrating and disappointing. We had the honor of celebrating my 19th year anniversary and finally eating here on May 25th (sorry for the late review). From the moment you walk up the steps, it already seems like a great place to try. The hostess at the top greeted us warmly and took us to our table. Wow! A huge tree overlooks everyone's table and I fell in love. Everything we ordered was perfect! Sorry, no pics as we were too busy with company, but someone did stand out and he is the only one that I can remember his name. Raul came out and introduced himself and brought an appetizer to our table and told us it was on the house as we were celebrating an anniversary. After this he attended us amazingly throughout the whole night and we all noticed he attended to everyone else as well. Great job, Raul. This place is lucky to have you. We had a really nice experience overall. The atmosphere was beautiful, the hostess was welcoming, and the food was really good. My son is a big fan of this place and absolutely loved it, which is why he recommended we come. It was my first time there, as well as my adult daughter's first time. The only downside had nothing to do with the restaurant itself, but unfortunately with some of the patrons seated next to us. My adult daughter felt very uncomfortable because she noticed them repeatedly looking over at us and whispering. I wish she had told me in the moment--I would have gladly asked to move--but she didn't want to cause any issues, especially since it seemed like they knew the waiter. I also think it's important to say that people who visit places should be mindful of how their behavior comes across. Others can absolutely pick up on judgment and gossip, and it can affect someone's experience more than people realize. It was disappointing because I genuinely liked the environment and would have otherwise had a perfect experience. I had dinner here last night and it was pretty good. The restaurant space itself is quite unique and doesn't feel like a typical LA restaurant. It's a rather large restaurant, spanning two stories and feels like a little escape from the city. The food was very good, especially the rainbow carrots and kanpachi Aguachile. I would order those two items again. The guacamole also tasted great but the portion for the price with a little bit on the small side. The mezcal flight was fun to try too ! I'm no stranger to Mirate, as the ambiance, spirits, food, and service are exceptional and keep me coming back. This time we changed things up and opted to have dinner at the bar. We were greeted by Adam H (two Adams behind the bar and both were fantastic as mixologists and servers), who truly raised the bar for what a dining and drinking experience should entail. This bar is busy, prepping drinks for the folks at the tables as well as those at the bar. Adam(s) didn't miss a beat and did it all with expertise, were super friendly, and made our experience top notch. Sitting at the bar changes the experience all together. Learning about one of the largest Mezcal selections in the USA, it is hard to figure out whether you want to go the route of cocktails or give some Mezcals a try. We started with Pulque, often dubbed "the drink of the Gods" was hand pulled from the tap at the bar. We then started into our adventure of mixology, each trying a different cocktail offered on the menu. Adam led the way, making suggestions based on our taste. None disappointed, but I always lean into El Guero. Delicious, get it! We took our time eating, starting with appetizers and adding a few dishes as we progressed through the evening. The Queso Fondido has to be the best we have ever had, with the sauteed leeks just putting this dish over the top. The chips (tostadas) were plentiful as they accompanied the salsas which were delicious, the Queso Fondido, as well as the Kampachi Aguachile Tatemado. We moved on to Yucca Sucias, an absolute must. Yucca fries smothered in shishito queso and chorizo verde, this dish is not to be missed. The Quesadilla was the last dish ordered, a corn tortilla filled with huitlacoche, cheese, and guac. Dessert always closes out the night, even when sitting at the bar. Who knew? Churro Donnas and Gansote were the choices and both did not disappoint as reported by my family. I simply could not indulge. I was stuffed. This establishment is wonderful from all aspects. It is inviting, comfortable, and simply beautiful, situated in this bustling Los Feliz neighborhood. There are two entrances, on off of Vermont and the other in the back alley. Regardless of which way you enter, know that you will be well taken care of during your stay. Street parking is ample, watch the signage to avoid ticketing. Valet is available, as well as an $8.00 lot reserved for the Dresden or neighboring establishments. My friend recommended this restaurant for dinner, and I was curious to see how I would feel after a long ago visit closer to when it opened. I remembered being impressed with Mírate's space, and entering the restaurant reminded me of how impressively it's designed. After you walk up the darkened staircase, you enter a stylishly lighted space that is enclosed while providing sky access; it's a nice mix of being indoor while connecting you to the outdoor ambience. We ended up sharing several items for dinner. The highlights included the pork belly and fried chicken tacos. I was impressed by the tender pork in the taco, and the chicken pared well with the Brussel sprout leaves and ranch dressing. The shrimp in the ceviche borracha had a firmer texture than expected, but I appreciated the mix of sweet and savory flavors. The cochinita pibil had a spice kick to it that was a nice surprise. Our server, Brittany (apologies if I'm spelling that wrong), was absolutely amazing. Attentive without hovering, super knowledgeable, and made us feel taken care of the entire evening. Multiple staff members also stopped by to check in throughout the night, which really made it feel like everyone was invested in our experience. We started with cocktails, and each one was crafted with so much creativity: * El Taquero No. 2 - smoky, citrusy, layered with mezcal and pineapple. * La Soñadora - a clarified gin milk punch that was smooth, unexpected, and perfectly balanced. * Watermelon Daiquiri - light and refreshing, perfect for summer. * Coconut Margarita - rich, tropical, and indulgent. * Tommy's Margarita - a classic done right. We also tried the Insurgente Pale Ale, which paired well with the food. For appetizers, the salsa molcajete came out with bold charred flavors, the Caesar salad had a unique hemp seed crumb twist, and both tacos we tried (fried chicken and cochito) were excellent--the cochito especially stood out with the honey fig truffle and chicharron crumble. For our main dish, we shared the Cochinita Pibil, which was fall-off-the-bone tender and packed with flavor. The pickled onions and beans balanced the richness perfectly. When we were here in May of this year (please read my initial review below), we were blown away by the beauty, elegance, and authenticity of Mirate. I noted that I wanted to come back at the holidays for some gifts from the Tienda, now housed in its own little niche near the front bar, re-styled, Tiendita. We were warmly greeted by the receptionist and told to take all the time we wanted. (We could have sat in the alcoves adjacent to the bar and sampled the possibilities, had we not been pressed for time.) I had done my homework, studied the history and concept of mezcals (which I have discovered and found I like, me, a teetotaler!) and then asked for help making a selection from the carefully curated selection of one-of-a-kind spirits (from tequilas, to mezcals, to sake!) in their respective niches. Aldo came to help. I explained what I was looking for and showed him my two choices. He advised me on the merits of each and I finally chose a rare vintage (and limited collection -- only 50 gallons left anywhere) exclusive to Mirate, its owners having judiciously identified the mezcalero as one of the oldest and best in Oaxaca. Aldo gave me a short biography of the cooperative Tres Tiempos, bagged up the bottle and reminded me that we could attend a flight where we would learn more. As our previous experience here suggested, Mirate is the best of the best. I cannot imagine this ambience, quality, and customer care anywhere else. I brought my girlfriend here while she was visiting from Korea after a friend recommended it, and overall we had a great experience. The space is absolutely beautiful, especially the lower-level seating area, which has such an intimate, upscale vibe. For food, the kampachi crudo was a standout and easily my favorite dish. It was fresh and bright. Can't remember what the nutty things were on the bottom but it was yummy. They even brought out tostada chips for us, which I appreciated. The queso fundido was rich and super filling, and we also ordered the brisket and branzino tacos which was more than enough food for the two of us. Overall, the quality felt on point for an upscale Mexican restaurant. I do have two minor notes. Our original waitress never really checked in on us after the food arrived and didn't mention that there would be a shift change, which felt a little odd especially since it wasn't very busy. Thankfully, who I assume was the manager (he was Korean) stepped in, noticed we needed some extra things and took great care of us. I'm genuinely grateful for his attentiveness because it really elevated the experience. The only other small critique is that the tacos weren't served as hot as I would have liked. If they had come out fresher and warmer, they probably would've been a highlight alongside the crudo and fundido. All that said, I'd definitely come back and next time, I'd love to explore the cocktail menu as well if I'm drinking that evening! read more

I rarely leave negative reviews, but this establishment managed to completely embarrass me in front of out-of-town friends I hadn't seen in years. If you want to spend $150 per person just to be treated like a timer on a stopwatch, this is the place for you. We had a Saturday reservation at 6:00 PM. The service was painfully slow; the kitchen took a full hour just to bring out our main dishes at 7:00 PM. Because we ordered heavily to try the menu, we finished eating around 7:35 PM. Our waiter suggested we move upstairs for dessert, which we politely declined since we were full. Literally five minutes later at 7:40 PM the manager, Julio, marched over and asked us to leave the table. He claimed they have a strict 1.5 hr time limit posted on their website. I told him that I booked over the phone and absolutely no one told me anything about time limits. He did not care. Kicking paying guests out the door after barely 100 minutes when your own slow kitchen consumed 60 of those minutes is a pathetic management. To add insult to injury, they sneak a hidden 4% "staff benefits" surcharge onto the bill on top of the tip, which I only noticed after signing. The food is decent fusion Mexican, but it is nothing special and certainly not worth the price or the hostile treatment. Save your money and go to any of the dozens of other upscale restaurants that actually value customers spending $150 a head. read more

I painfully leave a two star review. I love this restaurant but I had dinner yesterday with a small group of friends and we were all disappointed. They changed a few menu items which is obviously fine, but the new stuff was just okay. We also got two entrees to share of which one was super salty (the pibil) and the other was tasteless (the carne asada). Service was great as usual. They take traditional Mexican recipes and give them a little twist while keeping all the flavors we know and love. So good. But I will say--two tacos were around $16-18, which in this economy is a little wild for a working class girly like me So just know you're paying for the experience and the presentation, not huge portions. Definitely go at least once, but maybe save it for a treat yourself moment! We didn't make a reservation and ended up in the bar area kinda close to other people. So if you want a nice table, def plan ahead! Service was okay--our server seemed busy, so not super chatty, but I get it. You really come here for the food presentation and that dreamy ambiance. I made a Valentine's Day brunch reservation at Mírate and was really looking forward to the experience. Unfortunately, we arrived just 2 minutes past the grace period, and instead of being seated at our reserved table, we were placed in a different area that was noticeably less comfortable. I completely understand that restaurants have policies, especially on busy holidays like Valentine's Day and I respect that they need to manage reservations carefully. However, given that we were only two minutes past the grace period, it felt a bit rigid and not very accommodating. A little flexibility or even a heads-up that our seating time would be shortened from the 90-minute window would have gone a long way! The food itself was flavorful and beautifully presented, which made the experience even more disappointing that the service experience fell short. Unfortunately, the hostess staff didn't come across as very warm or welcoming, which set the tone for the rest of the visit. I understand policies are policies, but hospitality is also about how those policies are delivered. We left feeling a bit disappointed, especially for a special occasion brunch. read more

I ordered the horchata and the Jamaica y Mango, and both were among the worst drinks I've ever had. I couldn't even finish them and we had to send them back for soda instead. The service also left a lot to be desired. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty, the staff seated everyone together in one corner, which made it hard to enjoy my date. I could hear every conversation happening around us instead of our own. I had high hopes for Mirate, especially since I came here to celebrate my birthday, but it just didn't live up to the expectations. Each one cleansed with unique gooseberries and crickets. We had 2 other cocktails which were both fantastic and full of flavor. For food we got the carrots which were very good as well as the queso fundido - also delicious. This place is so pretty! I came here with some friends for my best friend's birthday and I'm glad we went. The front entrance is small and next to a bar, there's a lot of little lights, open space. I recently visited this Mexican restaurant and found it to be quite authentic. I had reserved a table for Sunday, but when we arrived at the scheduled time, we had to wait about 15 minutes for a server to seat us--even though the restaurant was nearly empty. This delay was unexpected and slightly frustrating, as there were no visible lines or crowds. It left a poor first impression. The menu was an interesting mix. They had an extensive drink menu, which was impressive, but the food menu was quite limited. It was very different from what you'd typically find in most Mexican restaurants--not bad, just unusual. The menu seemed more traditional and old-fashioned, giving it a uniquely Mexican touch. As for the food, I ordered the chicken taco and the Baby Prince salad. Both were delicious! The chicken was perfectly crispy and full of flavor, and the salad was fresh and interesting. My friends, however, struggled with their meat dishes, which were extremely spicy--too spicy for them to enjoy. The guacamole and chips were also unexpected. Instead of regular chips, they served large tortilla sheets that we had to share, which was a bit awkward given how small the portion of guacamole was. Every staff member we passed said hello and our server was so helpful. She gave great recommendations! The food was amazing! Had no idea this place existed! A bunch of our friends went to see a movie and then decided we would have brunch together. Someone suggested Mirate and we went along. Despite difficulty in finding a parking spot on a Sunday afternoon I would give this place a 5 star rating. Here's why. We had a reservation so there was no waiting. We were greeted very cordially and were escorted to our table. That actually took us through the entire restaurant as we had one of those large tables that seated 8. We started with some margaritas and they were perfect. We also had some salsa and chips for the table. I ordered the mojado burrito and my wife had the mushroom taco. She enjoyed it to the point that she commented that that was the best taco she had tasted. The food quality, presentation and taste was great but what would set Mirate apart from other restaurants would be the ambiance, the attentiveness of the staff and the overall experience. Came here with the intentions to only have drinks because the food reviews weren't good but once there the food sounded appealing and boy was it amazing! Their menu is constantly changing so do not listen to old reviews, the food, service, atmosphere and overall experience was amazing!!! read more
