I was saddened to hear that co-founder Joshua Gil, who pioneered the concept of featuring the best of Mexican and Alta Californian ingredients and cuisine in Mirate, had passed away shortly after I visited for the first time. Current head chef Alan Sanz and company carries that vision forward. It was clear why Mirate has been among the top 50 bars in North America for consecutive years with their creative tequila, mezcal, and pulque forward cocktail menu. The food was absolutely delicious. The richness of the paté de pollo was so well balanced with the acidity of the salsa macha and sweetness of the black cherry, prickly pear, and caramelized onions. The depth of flavor in the mole, creaminess of the goat cheese foam, and smokiness of the corn husk ash was a genious take on the Filipino fried plantain classic turon. The use of pork shank instead of the usual pork shoulder will make me never see cochinita pibil the same way ever again. To top it off, entering Mirate feels as if you are entering a secret private courtyard haven in East Hollywood with a lovely atmosphere to dine at any hour of the day. I just looked at their website again and found that their menu has completely changed just 6 months which reflects their intentional choice to use seasonal ingredients and that I may just have to go visit again.
The interior of Mirate is gorgeous with lots of interesting artifacts and pieces. While you wait for your table, can have access to a few lounges and the bar. The restaurant layout is indoor/outdoor can get pretty dark when dining at night. Parking: we found street parking but valet is available. Despite the nice ambience, the food was very mid considering the price. I was not aware that there was a rotating menu and was looking forwards to trying the carne asada y papas but it wasn't on the menu. I opted for carne à la parilla and it was as 12oz new york strip cooked and seasoned nicely. It was good but nothing special. The Aguchilies de cameron and branzino was again good but overpriced. The horchata came in a small 8oz cup and was also nothing special. Overall, the nice ambience was the highlight of the restaurant.
Mirate has a really beautiful atmosphere, with a great mix of modern and traditional Mexican design. The waiting area was especially cool, and the outdoor seating was immaculate. The booths had huge pillows that made them surprisingly comfortable and inviting. They also have a huge selection of alcohol, including plenty of mezcal options. Parking is available through street parking, valet, or a nearby lot for $9. Salsa Molcajete -- $7 The portion was smaller than I expected, but the spice level was just right. The salsa had a very smooth consistency and came with a good amount of tortillas. The tortillas were thin and crispy, which I really enjoyed. Aguachile de Camarón -- $18 A good variety of ingredients came with the aguachile, including red onion, cucumber, tomato, and radish. Each added a different flavor and texture, which made the dish more interesting. It leaned a little sweet for my taste, but the shrimp itself was cooked perfectly with a great texture. Daisy's Branzino -- $28 The branzino was a little smaller than expected, but this ended up being my favorite dish. The greens on the side added a nice freshness, while the crispy skin gave the fish a great texture. The guacamole was also a really good addition and elevated the dish. It was slightly on the salty side, but overall, the flavors worked really well together. Carne a la Parrilla -- $58 We ordered the steak medium and it came out cooked to perfection. The meat was tender with a good amount of char flavor, and the accompanying sauce paired really well with it. The flaky salt on top was a particularly nice touch and added just the right amount of seasoning. Virgin Horchata Pretty standard horchata and nothing particularly unique. It had a heavier cinnamon flavor, which was nice if you enjoy cinnamon-forward horchata. Virgin Jamaica & Mango This was much more refreshing. It tasted very fresh, almost like the flavors came directly from the fruit and plants themselves. Definitely my favorite of the two non-alcoholic drinks. Overall, Mirate is definitely worth checking out for the atmosphere and presentation. The outdoor seating is beautiful and comfortable, and while some of the portions were smaller than expected, the quality and flavors of the food were generally very good. The Daisy's Branzino and Carne a la Parrilla were my standouts.
Instructions: 1. Somehow find parking. I guess. 2. Enter the restaurant. From the back or from the front - who knows! 3. Marvel at the massive, architectural wonder of the restaurant. 4. Sit down, look at the small but fancy menu, confused. 5. Just order things. 6. Smile. Notable Mentions: 1. The restaurant really is that massive. It's pretty, I'm pretty sure it has multiple bars, and it's multi-storied. Well-designed. Well-done. I didn't think you could just have something like this in LA. 2. The drinks, oh, the drinks. I know a lot of people come here just for this, but they really are tasty, inventive, unique. And the garnishes might just surprise you! (look carefully at the pictures) 3. The food is also just great. This was for dinner. 10/10 would return.
I cannot stop obsessing over this place. It's so charming and the food is hands down some of the best I've ever had in my life. The quality is unmatched in so many ways. I love the indoor outdoor intimate vibe. It's so classy and sexy in its own sophisticated way. Servers have always been great and the food always arrives timely. Whenever there aren't reservations, we just sit at the bar. If I could have this everyday I would.
This place has it all! Cute decor, delicious food, and excellent service! The trifecta! We went here on a Saturday for brunch to celebrate our birthdays and we had the best time. As soon as you walk up the stairwell you'll be transported into this super cute place with an outdoor-indoor feel, almost like an elegant treehouse. We were seated on the second level which provided a Birds Eye view of the restaurant. We ordered a few items to share: Cameron ceviche, flautas and for our sweet tooth, French toast paired with a mango sorbet surprise with a candle for our birthdays (tip: we drizzled the melted sorbet on our French toast and took small scoops with each bite - game changer!). Everything was so delicious! We also ordered mocktails, a miche-nada for him and a lemony drink for me. This experience wouldn't have been as great without the exceptional service we had. Our waters were always refilled without asking, our tables were cleaned with every dish, honestly top-notch service! Parking can be a bit challenging but drive around a few blocks and you'll find a few spaces. Worth the walk after an incredible meal. Happy eating!
Mírate is a stunning spot in Los Feliz that everyone needs to experience at least once! The restaurant interior is absolutely beautiful, and the presentation of both the food and drinks is pure art. While it is definitely on the pricier side, the flavors are extremely unique and delicious, making it worth the splurge for a special night out. My only real bummer was discovering they took the vegan ceviche off the menu--that was actually the whole reason I came back! I'm sure they have their reasons, but I was pretty disheartened to see it go. Overall, the menu doesn't have a ton of vegan items, but they do have some room for adjustments if you ask. Despite the menu change, the incredible atmosphere and unique menu still make it a must-try.
Pleasantly surprised at some of the menu items I hadn't tried. It was my first time for dinner last weekend and we were a private party celebrating a birthday. All dishes were shareable and there were certainly some remarkable ones. Starting with my most favorite the ceviche bites (I can't tell you exactly what it's called on the menu, but it was one bite that left you enticed for more!) if you like fish, certainly a must. My second favorite, the roasted rainbow carrots (the salsa macha was palatable all by itself!!). Third favorite, grilled chicken (again, not sure the name on the menu but, it was so juicy and perfect with the housemade tortillas). Other menu goodies, the steak (ribeye bites) tortillas with salsa/guacamole, carnitas (looked good), cactus appetizer, and cheese (and cactus?) quesadilla. Unfortunately, I think the menu was somewhat curated for the private party but I CERTAINLY think it's worth exploring. A lively atmosphere to add to it all!
One of the prettiest and most visually stunning venues for dining or cocktails in Los Angeles. I saw this spot on Nobody Wants This and knew I had to try it. Honestly, the food is stellar. Sometimes a movie location might just be all hype but Mirate delivers flavor and again is one of the most picturesque locales. The service is phenomenal. The bartenders were super friendly which isn't always the case. Servers were warm and made suggestions which helped!
5 stars for the ambiance, 5 stars for the drinks, 4 stars for the food and service. This is a gorgeous restaurant that makes you feel like you are on vacation. That being said I think the food is good but not amazing. With a group of 4 we were able to try a lot of the menu. The kampachi was my favorite. I'd definitely come back for drinks and it's nice to stay for a while.
Came here for an early birthday celebration. The staff greeting me with a happy birthday was sweet! The ambiance def gives Tulum. They have various seating locations with different vibes, some more intimate than others. Our server gave us complimentary drinks. My favorite being the agave! The taco I ordered was delicious, lots of flavors mixed perfectly together and the meat was tender. I had an additional cocktail and enjoyed the strong cucumber taste. The service was attentive, and it made the experience a lot more enjoyable. I left with a full belly without having to order too many things, as the portions are generous.
Girl dinner on the open-air patio, and everything worked: food, drinks, and service that was attentive without hovering. Mírate is known for its agave program (ranked among the best bars in North America, with a dedicated mezcaleria), and it shows even in simple orders. Our skinny spicy marg, skinny Cadillac, and two ranch waters were all clean and well balanced. The crab & cheese buñuelitos, the taco de ribeye, and the potatoes & piquillos, which quietly outperformed for a $10 side. One note for fellow spice-sensitive folks: the salsa molcajete is their mildest salsa, but it still had a kick for me. My friend's branzino arrived beautifully charred and plated. If you're gluten-free or celiac, this kitchen gets it. They swapped in corn tortillas without hesitation and took care of my celiac friend with zero stress. Not a given, even in LA. The multi-level space is stunning, so come a few minutes early to take it in. Parking is easy too: valet at the restaurant or 2 lots about a block away. Already planning what to order next time.
Went back a 2nd time and it was way less magical than the first. They had updated the menu and removed the ceviche (bad move) the two similar dishes they added didn't even compare. Service was good but not great and it's a beautiful place so that's still a plus. It'll be a while before I go back

What a fabulous dining experience. The staff were so accommodating to our party of six. We were treated to impeccable service from the moment we were seated. No rushing, and very conscientious and friendly staff. Having never dined her before it was a pleasant to surprise to experience the surroundings. Lots of people having having fun and enjoyment. I tried the Croque Semora lamb barbacoa, queso chihuahua, quesillo, sunny side egg, telera roll, consomé. It was delicious and delivered hot and with good presentation. Another guest had the Carne Asada Con Huevos grilled hanger steak, sunny side up eggs, ayocotes and he loved it and finished the bowl in lightening time. We tried several appetizers including Salsa Molcruete charred tomato, chiles, nopal, tostadas, and the excellent Smashed Avocado shallots, lime, mexican furikake, tostadas and the Salsas De La Casa salsas molcajete, macha, verde cruda, tostadas. I came here for drinks and it was a good experience. The vibe is good and the design of the restaurant makes it feel like you are outdoor. DRINKS The slushies are high quality. This experience was incredible. Their drinks are so unique and definitely the star of the show. I absolutely love how everything behind the bar is sourced directly from Mexico. Their food was great as well. Our server knew all the answers to our questions regarding food and drink, and I trusted him with everything. He was well equipped to address my peanut allergy as well. Perfect date night spot! This place was amazing! The interior was gorgeous from the seating, the decor and the giant tree in the middle. The food was also so delicious! My expectations for food at pretty restaurants are usually low but this place completely swept me off my feet. The pork belly taco was to die for! A must try for those eating here Getting a table took a while, the hostess let multiple people who came after us in despite us having a reservation. Other than that, the service was also good! Brilliant! I was afraid since I'm one of few vegetarians that do not like mushrooms. But we ordered the rainbow carrots & fried mushrooms with aioli. I had the happy hour Tommy margarita with mescal. The bartender offered us the mescal shots as well to taste. The service was superb, the drinks solid & well poured, the food was exceptionally tasty & if the fried mushrooms didn't look so much like a mushroom I would have never known it was. They tasted like fried chicken! The aioli added a tartness that made them perfect. The rainbow carrots were the most superbly flavorful dish of simplicity & complexity that I've enjoyed in a long time. Can't wait to see more vegetarian dishes added to their menu for my reptilian veggie brain to explore. Had a fantastic experience at Mirate which I'm so very grateful for since it has renewed my hope in the Los Angeles dining scene. Mirate was welcoming, staffed with some friendly and kind people, offered great service and even better food. We had an 5:15p Friday evening reservation and upon arrival skirted through the restaurant to get to our 2nd story table that looked out into the courtyard. The restaurant is a VIBE. The great big tree in the middle of the restaurant made me happy. Our group of four ordered a number of shared apps and mains to give us the opportunity to taste and try a variety of items on the menu. Every item was delicious, flavorful, and unique. Each dish had unique pairings, ingredients, and flavors that came together super well which showed me the chef has put some effort into innovation. Def recommend ordering family style to taste the gamut. Our server was really nice, attentive, and provided us recommendations. Beautiful restaurant, really cool vibe and ambiance. Food was interesting. We ordered their ceviche and ribeye. Ceviche had a very distinct taste we couldn't pinpoint -- it's described on the menu as black lime and cucumber but was very thick. Ribeye was cooked well but also was very wet (?), a lot of different sauces and wasn't a big fan of the potatos. Overall would come back for drinks and apps maybe but would definitely pass on the food especially for the price tag. read more
This review is a few months late, but I had to come back because that's how special this place is. First off, I love trees and they have a living tree in the center of the restaurant!! How cool is that?! The whole vibe of the place is chic, calm, and earthy. I am sure it's eve prettier at night time. You can tell a lot of thought and care went into every detail. They've a nice bar area on top w/ great selections and the restaurant area with another bar in the lower level. The food was absolutely amazing. We visited for a late lunch/early dinner. My friend and I got the California Burrito with Hanger Steak which we loved! I also got a coconut margarita which was so pretty and tasty. Loved this place. The vibe is super cool with a big tree in the middle and plenty of space upstairs and downstairs. It feels really open and stylish. We tried the salsa platter which came with a nice variety of sauces. It was a little small, but the unlimited tortas made up for it. The plantains were super yummy as well. The Branzino was the highlight. So flavorful and perfectly cooked. Definitely a great spot to have a nice date night with friends or whoever! We stopped here for brunch as we were in the area and looking for a restaurant to try. We assumed they would have a brunch menu, but that we would also be able to order off their regular menu, which we were not allowed to. The only issue with this was their brunch menu only had steak, pork, and mushroom tacos on the menu and I'm a pescatarian. We were craving fish tacos but I ended up getting a mushroom taco, and it was underwhelming. The chilaquiles was delicious, however, as I continued to eat, I saw there was some type of meat in it. I asked our waitress and she said it's pork. I looked at the menu again, and asked her where it says that it contains pork, and she mentioned the "cochinita pibil" is pork. I was confused because every other item on the menu has the meat listed out in English, whereas the chilaquiles doesn't have any English word asterisked advising that the dish contains pork. So had to send it back. My boyfriend loved his taco campechano and mentioned the burrito was ok but had too many ingredients (could've done without the roasted poblano). The decor is nice, but our food experience wasn't that great. Other than that, we may return to try out the dinner menu. read more

My friends and I ate here for a birthday dinner so we opted for one of their prefixed menus. Upon entering, we were immediately in awe at the ambience and the intricate decor pairing well with the soft lighting. I don't usually go out to eat Mexican food so I'm no expert on the cuisine, but the dishes we were served were very tasty. I especially liked the smashed avocado, roasted rainbow carrots, quesadilla, and pan de elote. The salad and tomato aguachile verde were alright in my opinion. I also ordered the sancho (pina colada) and it was so good! Our server was very funny and kind and I noticed the staff consistently checking on us to see the progress of our meal so they knew when to bring out the next round of dishes. I came here for brunch and had such a wonderful experience. The cocktails here are something special. I got the mi sancho and the coconut margarita, they were both some of the best cocktails i've ever had! We started with the salsa which was sooo fresh and addicting. Next they brought out the fried chicken tacos, that was my favorite food item, it was insanely delicious and i'm so glad i ordered it. The queso was another delicious dish. We also got the yucca y plantains, it was a very unique and flavorful dish, yum. The last thing we got was the mollete, the guac was super fresh and the sourdough had such a great tangy flavor. I loved every single thing we ordered and would definitely come back. The actual restaurant was also so cool i loved the open air atmosphere and tropical vibe! The service was great too. Mirate is an infused Mexican Restaurant. You'll be welcomed by beautiful decor that transports you to a beautiful beach in Mexico, like a Tulum vibe. There are three levels, each bringing its welcoming magic. I think you'll particularly enjoy the ambiance and decor, which I found to be very transporting. It is truly a unique dining experience. My daughter and I visited an enjoyed their delicious chilaquiles, we shared a crispy and soft chicken taco and I had the aguachiles negros marinated in an habanero sauce accompanied by their Llorona drink a blood mary with Mezcal. My fiancé and I went to Mirate on a Sunday night and had a great time. It wasn't too busy, which honestly felt like the perfect time to go -- relaxed, but still with a great vibe. It was our second time there -- the atmosphere is awesome, the music is on point, and both the food and drinks were excellent. Highly recommend the cochinita pibil. Mirate is one of those places that just has a cool feel, and I'm looking forward to putting friends on to this spot. read more

This place made it to Top 50 bars of the world and I can see why. Their cocktails are delicious and they take so much care and thought into excelling at what they do here. The drinks were definitely the highlight of the experience but the food is excellent as well. I forget the name of our cocktail but it was based off an Al Pastor taco, and you could really taste the pineapple, the pork fat, the tortilla even and it was quite delicious and not like something I've had before. The food was great, also, but my personal favorite was the pork shoulder. Their tacos are $10 a piece, but if you get the pork shoulder, you'll get several tortillas to make your own tacos and the meat is so tender, beautifully balanced, not too salty, and delicious in its own right. The yuca fries were great as well, and definitely save room for the cheese and guava tart dessert which was unlike something I've had before. Definitely elevated and definitely worthwhile. Mírate is a great option for the Los Feliz dining scene. Love the atmosphere, food, and overall experience! It's a multi-story space with a lush interior: lots of foliage, plants, murals, natural light with the open ceiling and gorgeous tree in the restaurant's center. The bar is a major highlight, especially due to the amazing tasting cocktails with Mexican spirits. The "El Guero" and "Tu Compa" were especially delicious! I loved the small plates like tacos! We had the Cochinita Pibil, Pork Belly Tacos, Fried Chicken Tacos, Asada, Kampachi Aguachile Tatemado, and Mushroom Tacos- all which were excellent! We had the honor of celebrating my 19th year anniversary and finally eating here on May 25th (sorry for the late review). From the moment you walk up the steps, it already seems like a great place to try. The hostess at the top greeted us warmly and took us to our table. Wow! A huge tree overlooks everyone's table and I fell in love. Everything we ordered was perfect! Sorry, no pics as we were too busy with company, but someone did stand out and he is the only one that I can remember his name. Raul came out and introduced himself and brought an appetizer to our table and told us it was on the house as we were celebrating an anniversary. After this he attended us amazingly throughout the whole night and we all noticed he attended to everyone else as well. Great job, Raul. This place is lucky to have you. Everything here was exquisite! From the service, to the food, drinks, ambiance! I've had many a cochinita pibil and this was BY far the best I have ever had. You could slice the pork with a spoon. The taco gobernador (shrimp and poblano pepper) was incredible! Had a couple mezcal and tequila drinks and they were very good. This place has everything nailed down to a T. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this establishment managed to completely embarrass me in front of out-of-town friends I hadn't seen in years. If you want to spend $150 per person just to be treated like a timer on a stopwatch, this is the place for you. We had a Saturday reservation at 6:00 PM. The service was painfully slow; the kitchen took a full hour just to bring out our main dishes at 7:00 PM. Because we ordered heavily to try the menu, we finished eating around 7:35 PM. Our waiter suggested we move upstairs for dessert, which we politely declined since we were full. Literally five minutes later at 7:40 PM the manager, Julio, marched over and asked us to leave the table. He claimed they have a strict 1.5 hr time limit posted on their website. I told him that I booked over the phone and absolutely no one told me anything about time limits. He did not care. Kicking paying guests out the door after barely 100 minutes when your own slow kitchen consumed 60 of those minutes is a pathetic management. To add insult to injury, they sneak a hidden 4% "staff benefits" surcharge onto the bill on top of the tip, which I only noticed after signing. The food is decent fusion Mexican, but it is nothing special and certainly not worth the price or the hostile treatment. Save your money and go to any of the dozens of other upscale restaurants that actually value customers spending $150 a head. read more

had a great experience at mirate! i've been wanting to try this spit for so long and the interior was even prettier than the pictures! such a great open space with beautiful designs. the service was amazing, our server was super attentive and personable. they have a full bar with a huge drink menu. we shared a couple food items on the menu but weren't that hungry so didn't get a great idea of the food but we enjoyed both our dishes. read more

Where is parking when coming to the restaurant?
We do not provide parking however we partner with a valet company who services our restaurant on the corner of Kingswell and Vermont with a stand and an umbrella that reads "BHB"
Do they allow dogs?
Hello! We gladly welcome service animals in accordance with ADA guidelines. Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate pets. We appreciate your understanding and hope this helps!
Are there any tables with good lighting at night? Or can we request one?
Yes! Our downstairs area by the tree is well lit and each of those tables has a table lamp. The upstairs area is more naturally well lit.
Are there Gluten free options?
There absolutely are. Let them know you're food restrictions and they'll work their magic
Are there any vegetarian dishes?
Yes, tons! They are indicated on the menu, and the servers are very knowledgeable too.
Is there open air ventilation or is the "outdoor" area enclosed?
It's surprisingly enclosed though there is some ventilation. I had expected more open air but there were large clear panels in the top floor area where we dined. So it does cut down on Covid air safety
Are they're any non alcoholic beverage choice? Besides water, juice, and soda?
Yes they have mocktails!
Is there a number where I can call reservations? The phone # available does not allow any voicemails I've tried calling and emailed as I have a group of 10 I need to reserve for and have not had any luck with a call back nor an email reply.

There is a variety. They carry only Mexican spirits. They have rum, whiskey, and amaros. The only have 1 vodka. But while supplies last.
Is the dress code more upscale or casual?
There's no official dress code per se, but it's an upscale vibe and most people are usually dressed well.
We wanted to come before a concert at the greek theater but don't see if they are open between 3 and 5pm on weekends?
Yes, they open at 11am on Saturday & Sunday and stay open till midnight!
Is this place owned by Mexicans or Mexican-Americans?
Yes! Our chef owner Joshua Gil is Mexican from Baja who also grew up here in LA.
What special sauces and spices are commonly used in Mexican cuisine, and which dishes do they complement?
They have all kinds of salsa - various Chili peppers. Mexican dishes have Cumin, paprika, citrus, tamarind, etc.
