We used to love buying bakery items like key lime pie, oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies and chocolate cake. Recently bought some key lime pie, tasted like a plug of cream cheese in the slice and the oatmeal cookies tasted day old, very hard and stale. Not worth the time to visit for such poor bakery items. So sad the quality has gone down a mile. read more

When I pointed this out to the busgirl she apologized but no one from management or the waiter ever came by to do the same. We came here for mother's day. This place has been here for such a long time, I figured that I'd give it another try. The first time, I ordered to go and it wasn't the greatest. I think it was due to the heat and how it was boxed. French fries need some air to stay crispy. Anyway, I made a reservation and was seated right away but wished that we were able to sit outside. Instead, we were in some nook. It worked out. The dishes that we ordered were okay. Everyone was pleasantly happy. Our server was attentive. Was so excited to be able to go eat inside and take my friend to lunch to celebrate her birthday. The place was stagnant, energyless, unfriendly, and uptight. Except for the older busboy or waiter from the other side who was so wonderful and helpful and classy. Our waiter couldn't answer one question even simple ones about the menu, the food or the drinks. He had to leave our table 4 times to ask how the food was cooked, whether a certain champagne was available (that used to be). And just set our drinks down and didn't even open the champagne or water and pour for us. (The other waiter came to the rescue on that) Really was the biggest disappointment. The owner was there. He was cold, seemed angry and offended we asked if we could get a half order of the potato skins, and said "we don't do half orders), which verifies they buy their food pre-made, and the quesadilla's were made with canned mushrooms. Everything tasted canned and packaged. Overall if ya want a lot of cheap food, this place is for you. If you expect homemade cooked food, it's not for you. Super disappointed and embarrassed to have taken my classy friend there for her birthday lunch. We spent $50 on 2 quesadillas, 2 soups and one water and one small mini champagne. Torrance Food Crawl #197 Misto is located in the back of Hillside Village where you can't see it from Hawthorne Blvd. Location is one of the most critical success factors for a restaurant and the fact that Misto has been around for 23 years is sort of a back-handed way of indicating that they have a product that people know about and have supported with their dollars for a lot of years. There was a bread 'bucket' with slices of two types of bread, one a french bread style and other sort of a wheat bread type. For a restaurant that prominently indicates that it also contains a bakery the bread selection, and quality, was disappointing. On the side was an olive oil based dipping sauce that contained lots of different vegetables finely chopped into small pieces which was interesting. I started with a bowl of the Tomato Basil Bisque. It was a very nicely flavored heavy tomato based bisque, probably thickened with cream. There were small adornments of green pesto, crotons, and parmesan cheese on top. I had the smaller size but it was good enough that I might consider a larger bowl on a different day when I was in more of a soup mode. The menu listed a new item, which I went for, the Misto's Asian Big Bowl, described as a stir fry and broth that contains shrimp, filet mignon, clams, turkey, pot stickers, and vegetables. The dish was served in a deep plate (or very shallow bowl) and hinting at the Asian nature of the item a pair of chopsticks was also provided. The melange of different ingredients were each individually pretty good, except the potstickers which were very average, and the dish overall turned out well. However, it came out a little sweeter than what I would expect and though individually most of the items could be found in an Asian dish it doesn't come across as Asian as I would have expected. I'm not sure why but maybe it was the addition of some items more common to American dishes (like turkey and filet mignon) and lack of more Asian style vegetables or peppers. On a late Wednesday afternoon it was very quiet in the restaurant. Service was excellent and everything was very clean. Parking was fine when I was there but I've been here on other occasions and parking can be more problematic, and it will become especially so once the Truxton's restaurant in Hillside Village opens which can only add to the parking lot woes. read more

I USED to love this place! This past weekend, I had breakfast there with my friend. I ordered their fillet Mignon eggs Benedict and he ordered the OSCAR BENEDICT which is English muffin topped with blue crab meat avocado Grilled Asparagus and poached eggs, with Hollandaise sauce. They both came with poached eggs of course. We both swapped one piece of each. But what a disappointment. There was no way that little string piece of beef was fillet Mignon. It was so hard!. On the Oscar Benedict, the asparagus was not grilled. It tastes like it was boiled.. soggy. Potatoes were still soggy and not cooked well done. At least one thing still the same, their chocolate chip muffins were delicious when it's hot! It seems like over the years, the quality has gone down. Misto, I want to love you again! My boss decided to take us there to celebrate a couple of our birthdays for lunch. When you turn into the parking lot you can't see where this café is. But there is adequate parking. They also have daily lunch specials, Actually about five or six different lunch specials. Price range from $10-$14. Several of us got the tomato bisque soup and fried chicken salad cost $10, The soup was a little bit too salty but still pretty good. The salad had chopped up pieces of chicken tenders with a spicy dressing. Huge portion. On the lunch special today there was fillet mignon quesadillas with mushrooms Gorgonzola cheese mushrooms served with a spicy Green salsa. Huge portion! Big enough to share! Cost $12 Another lunch special was seafood pasta shrimp mussels various fish over angel hair pasta. My coworker said it was extremely delicious, another coworker drizzled a little of the garlic dipping sauce which came with the bread basket over hers. Cost $14 The Cajun chicken sandwich with french fries looked amazing and my coworker said it tasted great too. For dessert we ordered the coconut cream pie drizzled with caramel. One of the best coconut cream pies I've ever had. Crispy shortbread crust creamy coconut filling with whipped topping and fresh coconut. We also order a flourless chocolate cake which looks like a little round cake however extremely rich. One bite was like a piece of chocolate fudge! Needless to say we just passed that cake around and everyone got a bite of it, one bite is enough unless you are a diehard chocolate fan. Hidden away in the back corner of this little plaza, park in the lot in front and follow the signs. My realtor brought me and my sister here for dinner when I used to live in the South Bay, so I remembered this little gem at the bottom of the hill to PV from Torrance when my friend and I were in the area looking for a brunch spot. It was pretty empty at brunch on a Saturday, so perhaps they are better known for their dinner. They have a fairly extensive brunch menu with everything you could want. I opted for the mushroom scramble with potatoes which was great. It didn't blow me away, but it did the trick. I liked that they put a the little basket of muffins on the table. It's been many years since I ate at Misto and now I remember why. The ambiance is pretty chill and they have some good desserts but I wasn't all that impressed with the main course I had. I dined with some friends and we ordered the Pop Corn Shrimp as an appetizer. I thought the shrimp was a little mushy. For my main course, I had the Mediterranean Pasta plate made with chicken, fettuccine, onions, sun dried tomatoes, garlic, broccoli and feta cheese. It was really bland that I had to use pepper and salt to liven my dish up. One of my friends with whom I was dining ordered the Trio Misto pasta which looked interesting on the menu as it was a medley of Filet Mignon, shrimp and chicken tossed with penne pasta, asparagus, sun dried tomatoes, roasted peppers, onions & tomato cream w/crispy fried onions on top. It sounded good but judging by the fact that my friend didn't finish his plate, I had a feeling it wasn't as good as it sounded and I personally thought it didn't look all that appetizing. My friend's wife ordered the Greek Pizza which was made with pepperoni, roasted zucchini, black olives, sun dried tomato, mozzarella, feta and tomato sauce. Now this pizza looked really good and my friend seemed to really enjoy it. We ordered a bottle of the Black Stone merlot which I thought was pretty average for the steep $25 price tag. We also shared a Triple Chocolate Cake with Raspberries which didn't taste as fresh but was decent enough to end a meal. After tonight's experience, I probably would not venture to eat here again quite truthfully especially considering you could get a lot more tastier and satisfying fare elsewhere for a lot less the cost. read more

I tried out this hidden cafe today after I visited a hidden park (nearby Alta Loma, my next review). Misto is set under some huge pine trees, surrounded by the cutest shops you never knew were there. The whole little plaza is hidden, although it's right on Hawthorne. You can't see it from the road. And I could hear no road noise at all from Misto's cozy outdoor patio. In addition to Misto Caffe the little plaza, called Hillside Village, is home to Restaurant Christine, a florist, at least one ladies clothing shop, a designer furniture store, a jeweler, a yarn/needlepoint shop.....and no longer the doggie accessory boutique. Sadly, it's gone. My lunch was so good, and the setting so pleasant, I very nearly gave this place 5 stars. I had a daily special: filet mignon with prawns, mashed potatoes, and Caesar salad....for 12 bucks. It came with swordfish too, but I asked for an additional prawn or two in lieu of the swordfish, and because it was my first visit my waiter said he would do that for me. So.....my meal began with a basket of their delicious fresh-baked bread, accompanied by amazing garlicky tapenade. Misto has its own bakery, and the desserts looked incredible as they were being served. This would be a great choice of a place to come just for dessert. The bread I liked best was a rye with sunflower & poppy seeds. Drenched in tapenade, it was heavenly. There was a breeze wafting through the pine trees on this warm day. Perfect. I sipped iced tea as I waited for my main course. Moon River played in the background. My lunch was excellent. Good salad, good prawns, the slice of filet a little chewy but acceptable......and the mashed potatoes were awesome after I dumped the remaining tapenade on top. Don't tell the chef, haha. I posted a photo of the food. Misto's menu includes sandwiches, salads, delish-sounding pasta dishes, soups, lots of seafood selections (including a warm crab sandwich), starters, wine list, daily specials, and vegetarian selections. And service was wonderful, btw. There is oodles of free parking in lots & garages surrounding the plaza. This is a restaurant I will visit again. read more

I'm perplexed... I yearned to come to this place, but I failed to comply with the reviews which boldly show BREAKFAST & BRUNCH place. Before I conclude this review I will add that I plan to return during their BREAKFAST/BRUNCH hours & revise my review as needed. I came here for dinner and felt that the food was lacking what the ambiance was compensating. Although this is a cute and cozy establishment in a pretty cute area I felt that the food was extremely mediocre. I left without even wanting to try the dessert and that says a lot for a person like me. I love pastries, but I felt so stuffed & not in a good way that I had to just tap out. I Ate there last Tuesday and had tuna salad sandwich and fries. When we first walked in there were only a few patrons. I thought that strange because I've eaten there years ago and they were crowded. Actually somewhat bland and tasteless in most cases this is fine for me as I cook for myself this way...but I know that in most scenarios it should have a little more flavor in the food... I personally had the Mediterranean Omelette...but it lacked flavor and the potatoes were a bit on the cold side...unfortunately....because they looked like they had potential... I live in North Orange County, about 5 miles from Disneyland in Downtown Fullerton. I don't mind the drive to Misto Caffe because I know I will be satisfied with my visit. I invited a friend who brought her cousin that is a chef and he enjoyed it as well. Complaints: -Doesn't seem like the younger crowd knows about Misto. Maybe its not a complaint but more of a curiosity. -You can't see it from the street but it can be turned into a positive quality as it is a hidden gem. What I like: -One of the ONLY places I buy dessert. My favorite are the Triple Chocolate Cake with Raspberries and Tres Leches. -Fussili Bucati Pasta (Pasta is never my first choice ANYWHERE, except here) -GREAT date spot. Its one of its kind and not a chain restaurant -The complimentary bread and dip -The ambiance, I LOVE the new renovations -Calamari as a starter -It's not cheap and its not expensive Misto Caffe and Bakery, its a restaurant where I am willing to break away from cooking and not worry about how many calories or grams of fat I will eat, since the food makes me happy. Owner unprofessional. We came for the delicious pizza and ravioli. It was Sat at 1:30 pm. When we ordered the waiter shared that they do not serve pizza before 2:30 pm. I asked why. He said policy. Yet it does not say that on the menu. When I mentioned it to the owner he was rude and started to raise his voice ( close to yelling) that it has been this way for years. I mentioned how we have come here for years and he argued that he had never seen us before. Yet all the waiters knew us well. The owner has lost a former loyal customer. I am a great tipper too. Came in for Father's Day, Dad's choice. I ordered the chicken savannah, which is basically lightly breaded chicken with a honey dijon glaze, with a pecan topping. So good. Mashed potatoes and mixed veggies on the side were also to perfection. I could see myself getting this meal every time here even though they have a wide variety. My parents both seemed pleased with their orders as well, the chopped salad and crab sandwich. It was slow when we came in and the waitress was very attentive, but once it got a little busier we barely saw her. Had to wait quite a while for refills, to-go boxes and waited seemingly forever for the bill. But it comes with the territory, I know. Reasonably priced and a nice covered outdoor patio makes for a solid dining experience. I met a high school alum friend here for dinner last night. As other Yelpers have mentioned, the bread basket & dipping sauce are really good. I had the tortilla soup & my friend had the pizza. I really liked the tortilla soup, as they give all kinds of good things to put into the soup. The friend liked her pizza a lot & had some leftovers for the next day. I think it's in a great location on Hawthorne Blvd. We both enjoyed the meal & being able to catch up. I'll definitely be meeting the friend here again, as she lives nearby. If you're looking for a nice, quiescent spot for a date place, this is the restaurant to be. It's tucked away in a very quiet plaza. One might think that the zombie apocalypse happened in the plaza since everything feels so quiet and abandoned. In any case, the food here is American traditional and unfortunately they don't serve breakfast all day. Their Greek pizza is pretty darn delicious and the Cuban sandwich is a burger rather than a sandwich. Despite being the only customers there on a Saturday afternoon, the service was quite austere; the two people that served us didn't smile at all. read more

This place is off the beaten path and a little hard to find the first time. The parking spaces in the front are very narrow and if you want to avoid door dings, they do have a back parking lot with much more space. I really liked the closed-in patio and the place has an intimate yet casual feel. The waiter was very nice. On the first visit, I usually judge a place by their fish and chips which is what I ordered here. Instead of a flaky white fish in a golden batter, I got three ultra-thin strips of fish in a hard chocolate brown crunchy shell. It is almost like they forgot to take it out of the fryer until it was an incinerated fish jerky. I should have taken a picture. The bread was very good and I liked the mango tea. If I ever go there again, I will avoid the fish and chips. I did not hear any complaints from other patrons, so I am giving a generous three stars. read more

It was good but very gooey & impossible to pick & hold in your hand, the method usually used to eat these things. My wife had a salad with tuna. We come here for brunch often. They serve the best scones and my daughter absolutely loves their blueberry muffins. We ordered a few minis for her to have as a snack for the week. The portions are big. I can't finish 1/2 of their sandwiches. The staff has been attentive and friendly when we come in. They have the best Mac and cheese in town. My daughters favorite for sure. The only complaint I have is the torta Cubana I had was super salty. I ended up eating the scones to fill up lol. Also their cappuccinos and lattes are not sweetened. read more
