The pea soup is rarely available when we're there. Bread basket bread is awful! We eat here every other year or so only because it's conveniently close to home. The bread they serve with an olive oil mixture is similar to Wonder bread. A crusty-type bread is ideal to dip in olive oil, not Wonder bread! The servers seemed to be in a bad mood when we dined there last week. My husband even said goodnight to the staff when we left and got zero response. Ah Misto, where have you gone? Walked over for dinner tonight. Misto of old had fresh, well-prepared food and impeccable service. The service is still impeccable. This staff knows their stuff and knows how to take care of a customer. But the kitchen, alas, the kitchen is tired. I ordered the "fish of the day", which is always almond crusted "seabass", mashed potatoes and spinach. This was not seabass, it was a frozen white fish filet of questionable origin. Prepared well, bit certainly not seabass. The marsala sauce was an overcooked paste spread across the top of the fish. Mashed potatoes had been sitting in the bain-marie a little too long. Basically the texture of dehydrated mash. I get it, covid, shutdown, I get it. But come back alive, not sleepwalking. I love this place, great neighborhood spot, but a shadow of olden days. Now while Misto isn't one of my normal breakfast spots in the South Bay I ended up meeting my sister here for a quick bite and was surprised as to how much I enjoyed my meal. This quaint little cafe was the perfect destination for a little peace and quiet, and a great place for us to catch up over a nice hot meal. I ended up ordering the eggs benendict and have to say that their hollandaise sauce was amazing. It was so damn good that if they offered hollandaise soup I would have had that as a starter. Well not quite, but Iet's just say that I was a happy camper. My order also came with a side of breakfast potatoes, which were cooked to perfection. Needless to say I licked my plate clean and moved on to my sisters waffle... I also want to mention that as soon as you are seated they bring out some freshly baked muffins and scones for you to munch on. Honestly, its a nice little treat to sit down to hot muffins, and the fact that they're free makes it even cooler. Overall its a great place to grab a late breakfast on the weekends and if you're the kind of person that doesn't like to wait then this is the place for you. My friend and I came into Misto Cafe on a Sunday around 12 looking forward to a great brunch. Once walking into the outside seating area, there was not a host to greet us, and we were left to walk around the outside and inside dining area until we finally ran into a man who seemed to be watching us walk around the entire time. He then pointed outside and said to sit anywhere...while taking a chance to overtly check out our rear-ends. He meets us at the table, I was given a dirty menu, and then he strategically places the menu in front of my friend, grazed her boob in the process, then touches her shoulder and leaves. Ew. I used to come to this place every Sunday for 6 years with my family, and I'm almost positive it was the manager who violated my friend. Went on Sunday afternoon- they said that there would be a 10 minute wait and we were next to be seated- even though half the restaurant had open tables.They could have been under staffed, although with half of the staff standing around its hard to think that they are. 20 minutes pass 2 parties walk in and ask how long the wait is, and get seated immediately.... Strange. Still they could have had called ahead- so benefit of doubt. We are finally seated after around 25 minutes and 3 parties of ranging from 4 people to 5 people... There were 2 of us. Another 10 minutes pass before someone comes over to ask for drinks. Another 10 minutes before we get the muffins (that were cold and dry), still no water/coffee at this point. Finally 20 minutes in with coffee we order. (they had no dairy alternatives btw- i was told "no we dont have that healthy milk here"). So 25 minutes waiting to be seated, 20 to take the order, and then add on another 30 to even get our food. The food was mediocre at best. I order oatmeal and a fruit bowl, the oatmeal was plain- but I expected that. When the fruit bowl came out, I literally laughed out loud $3 for about 10 quarter sized pieces of cantaloupe and honeydew. Seriously?? I've lived down the street from this place for most of my life, so it's always been a go-to eatery for my family whenever guests are in town or we're feeling too lazy to drive. Situated in the Hillside Village business park, Misto is somewhat hidden in a jungle of shops and other restaurants. I guess this adds to its appeal. It's definitely quaint, so a nice place to go if you're looking for a quiet, intimate lunch or dinner. As for the food, it's decent. The garlic olive oil spread is shamazin. However, I always end up slightly disappointed with the entrees. Earlier tonight I ordered the daily special salad (shrimp and avocado with grilled peppers and mushrooms). The shrimp was scrumptious, but there was too much dressing. I couldn't even finish it because it was too heavy. The fudge brownie was good, though. Here's a place that I've been dozens of times in my life, but for some reason the only memorable things are the garlic spread and the desserts. Breakfast food is God's gift to those of us who are sick of hearing people telling us "breakfast is the most important meal of the day!" Growing up our entire lives eating oatmeal, cereal, and pop tarts, it's no surprise that so many Americans forget to eat breakfast - why eat something unless it's worth eating? Which is why I love going to restaurants that make breakfast memorable and remind me to eat something - even if it's chocolate chip pancakes or eggs benedict drizzled in hollandaise sauce. Misto is one of those places that serve up memorable breakfast food. My girlfriend and I trekked down to the South Bay and decided to give this place a try. This place is tucked away in a little strip mall and might be a little hard to find - be sure to look for it in the midst of the sea of other strip mall store signs. We arrived at around 1, were greeted, and told we could sit anywhere. So we decided since it was a beautiful day, why not sit outside, although it wasn't really outside since it was covered. You'll know what I mean when you see it. Few things I noticed right away - the "Zagat Rated" stickers (which are comforting) and the number of people there. One thing I dread about going to a new restaurant is walking into the place and being the only people there. This usually leads to what I call the "Tsunami of Attention", where the staff to customer ratio exceeds 4:1 and someone comes by every other minute asking how your food is, if they can help you with anything else, etc. etc. I'm all for attentive service but like a smothering mother who doesn't know when to stop showing affection to their 30 year old, you got to know when to say when it comes to service. Anyways, I digress. After being seated, they brought out a basket of freshly baked mini scones and muffins - 2 of each (raspberry, chocolate chip, blueberry, and cranberry). The texture of each pastry was crisp and slightly crunchy, which I like. Not overly sweet but full of flavor. I could've eaten a few more of those and would have been fully content to give the place 4 stars. But I really wanted to try the food now - if the scones and muffins were any indication, their food must be delicious. After a little deliberation, we decided on the filet mignon eggs benedict and a belgian waffle with a side of bacon (4 pieces) with 2 cups of coffee. After a short wait, the food came out and we began to dig in. My girlfriend loves waffles, so we are in constant search of the perfect waffle. The closest we've come to finding it was at the Plum Cafe in Newport Beach. This waffle was good, but not at that level. The batter was good and the waffle had crispy texture, but it lacked a certain something - it needed more breading - it was on the thin side and wasn't hearty enough. The filet mignon eggs benedict is drenched in a delicious hollandaise sauce tops off the eggs nicely. Although the texture and the flavors were nice, it was slightly bland and required a couple of pinches of salt. I'll definitely have to try them again to see if it's a one time thing. The bacon was done to a nice crisp but there was nothing special about the way they prepare them. Same could be said about the home potatoes that come with the filet mignon eggs benedict - mere filler mostly. The service was decent - the staff came by a few times to check if we needed more coffee but not as attentive as I would like - maybe if they came by a couple of more times during the meal it would have been perfect. I generally evaluate the staff by how many times I have to stop someone to ask for something and I only had to do that one time. Bottom line: Nice, cozy spot in a great part of the city. If you're looking for a quiet place to have a tasty brunch, don't think twice about heading over to Misto. read more

Like everyone else says, this place really is hidden. I found this place through restaurant.com which usually has good places, but this was not one of them. The highlight of the meal was the spread and bread they brought out when we sat down. It was oily and garlicky and had chickpeas and herbs in it. Pretty promising. We shared the crab cakes, and I agree with Yong S. Over sauced, very oily, not tasty at all. It came on top of coleslaw or something that was almost as bad as the crab cakes. For the entree my bf ordered like fisherman's platter or something. ~18 bucks for assorted chunks of fishy tasting fish that was all deeply battered and fried and overcooked. The menu did not indicate it would all be fried like that. It also was not a very sizeable portion for the lunch price. I ordered maybe the frutti di mare, and again the seafood was overcooked and overly fishy. The pasta was overcooked and though it was a good portion size, after a few bites I didn't want it anymore. We asked for the check and combined with waiting for the receipt it took about 20 minutes, which is insane. The waiter was in no hurry obviously, and was so muddleheaded he mixed up some other tables' receipts. Overall the service was terrible. I needed to be somewhere and had set aside a good hour for lunch. They took an hour and a half, and not because we spent long eating. Our server was so slow and inattentive. Someone else had to take our order because he was off somewhere. If we hadn't had a restaurant.com certificate, we would've been pretty pissed. Even with the certificate, for what we had to pay, we could've gotten a lot better food elsewhere. I don't know why their menu is so seafood heavy. I've been to Misto's many times over the years, I worked down the street for five years and would come up whenever I felt like splurging on a lunch. I was on restaurant.com and saw that they had a gift certificate for here so I was super excited and bought it. With the great discount I was able to sample a lot of stuff. As always I got the delicious bread with oil and had the server refill the basket a second time. Yum I love this oil they have for dipping very unique. Next I had the tomato bisque, another usual fave. Then I had calamari and sweet potato fries. These were both great as well. I almost never find calamari cooked correctly at restaurants but it was perfect here. For my entree I had the stir fry, which I think I usually ask for no onions but forgot this time. No matter though because I was already full. I did have a latte after, that was OK, not the best, but not the worst. As always I will definitely return in the future. On a side note some of the wait staff seems unfriendly at first, but you should understand that all day they are waiting on old cheap people who split entrees and drink water. A friend and I chose this eatery for a quick dinner prior to a performance at the Norris Theatre right up the road. The dining room was packed and typically that is a good sign. We were seated without a wait and barely before our bottoms were in our chairs our drink orders were taken. There were several appetizing dishes from which to choose. My guest chose the grilled salmon salad and I selected the BBQ 'Tiger' prawn quesadilla. Their very delicious dipping oil and bread came out immediately after ordering and there were no problems at all with the service. Our server was very attentive. Two stars is reflective of my meal which came out looking as if it had previously been digested. Rather unappetizing to say the least. Eight large pieces of quesadilla were layered on the plate, their sparce filling tucked completely inside. Upon further inspection a lifted corner revealed shrimp no larger than a quarter with no sauce, basically steamed and scattered about, perhaps one in each piece although there were some slices with no shrimp whatsoever. Dismayed, I ate with a knife and fork surgically dissecting away the copious quantity of soggy tortilla to retrieve about six shrimp altogether. It was a disappointment topped off with what had to be at least a week old lemon cheesecake whose poor filling was so offended it separated itself from its flavorless almost stale crust. Misto supposedly is a bakery. Their baked goods should be sold fresh daily and donated if not. Doubtful I'll return. Great service cannot make up for poorly executed and misrepresented food. read more

This place is more customer specific in terms of food. I ordered the chicken tortilla soup and was surprised when it came out. It's not the typical soup you think of... It came with all the ingredients in the side and was oily. It was certainly not good to me but other people in my party enjoyed it. I returned mine and got pot stickers instead. The pot stickers were good but nothing special. The service was great. The server was extremely accommodating even when I sent my food back. Misto holds a special place in my heart. My husband and I frequented this place so much when we were dating, the staff knew us by name. They even gave us free desserts when they found out we were engaged. It's a cute, intimate restaurant that is hidden in the Hillside Village Plaza. The food follows the atmosphere. It's upscale comfort food. I adore the tomato bisque. My husband can never get enough of the Chicken Susanna (chicken glazed with honey pecans and presented on a bed of delicious mashed potatoes). This place is a hidden gem in my neighborhood which was so well hidden that I never knew it even existed, even when I live so close! But smart people would use Yelp, even in your own neighborhood because Misto Caffe will pop right up as one of the best and it really is! I've been here for dinner, lunch and brunch and all were fantastic! I love how homemade (what I mean by that is clean + good quality food!) everything taste! Mmm! Even their desserts were A-mazing!!! I was already too full for that but seeing other tables order ONE DESSERT PER PERSON after each ordering a dish, I knew I had to try and ohhhh myyyy! Their coconut creme pie was to die for! Misto Caffe is a casual bakery-café in Hillside Village (where Via Valmonte ends at Hawthorne Blvd.). Despite its hidden location in the middle of this funny retail center, it is a HUGE restaurant. There is a covered patio with a couple dozen tables as well as a large interior with several dozen tables. It is a pleasant place. Because it is protected from the street, it does not have a lot of street noise. The inside is aiming for a French café - lacquered butcher block tables, black chairs, wood floors, bakery cases, and Euro wall hangings. I had been here many years ago, but I generally frequent another local eatery. However, I was meeting a new colleague for lunch, and we decided on Misto Caffe. I am really glad that we did! I ordered the half-Southwestern Salad ($9.99) with cilantro instead of tortilla strips and had it lightly tossed with their chipotle dressing rather than their spicy BBQ dressing (which I thought might be too sweet). It was chopped romaine tossed with cubed roast chicken, a few corn kernels, chopped carrots, jicama and red onions, and cilantro. The chipotle dressing tastes like a creamy ranch dressing - maybe there is a drop of chipotle. Next time, I will try the spicy BBQ dressing instead in the hopes that it is actually spicy. Overall, it was a very good salad. The produce was fresh and crisp, and the chicken was moist. I didn't mind that it was light on the corn, because I don't like a very sweet salad, but I would have liked more onions and cilantro (personal preference). I absolutely LOVED the fact that everything in the salad was bite size - no straggling veggies hanging from the mouth. Really, the only thing keeping this from being a 5 star salad is the very boring/generic tasting dressing. After we had ordered, a bread bucket (a little pail) was brought with a few small slices of white bread and what tasted like German style wheat. I had a piece of the wheat with a little of the olive oil-garlic chutney brought with it. The bread was excellent - very fresh - as was the little chutney. The service was good. It took a few minutes for the guy to take my drink order, but it meant that I was ready to order right away. He checked on us a few times, and the food came out quickly. If you are decisive on the menu, this is a very efficient place to have lunch. Overall, I was very happy with the experience. I will definitely come back. read more

Its funny that I haven't reviewed Misto before since I live a block from the restaurant and have been here many times. Misto's is located in a secluded strip mail named Hill Side Village at the base of Rolling Hills. Its a nice and quiet location and is very Santa Barbara esque. The food here is generally very good and is very much like an upper scale coffee shop. They do have some great Salads, Burgers as well as high end items like Fillet Mignon. Whenever I'm here, almost all the women seem to be ordering off the Salad section. I really don't blame them since their salads are very tasty. One of the things most people talk about is their complementary breads. Not specifically the bread itself, but the dipping sauce. The oil concoction is one of the most flavorful things I had in a while. In fact, I asked what was in it, and I remember them telling me but why bother re-creating it when its right next door. But what they are especially known for is their weekend brunches. Yes, they have traditional bacon and eggs, but they also have some great items like Crab Cakes Benedict to a Huevos Rancheros. All prepared nicely and at reasonable prices. Because Misto is a Bakery as well, they have some great desserts. Although they have some great Coconut Cream Pie, I have a special affinity towards their Tres Leches cake. A cuppachino and the Tres Leches is a magical combination. Overall their traditional fare is definitely above average, but their weekend brunch is something you must go and enjoy. Keep in mind they are quite busy during weekend brunches but if you order the right item, you will be well rewarded. In fact, just go there for some dessert. It is a nice quiet place to enjoy some baked goods and some coffee. Misto's is a solid 4 stars...we happen to come here probably once a quarter, and we've never been disappointed. I usually order one of their daily pastas (usually a seafood one), and I think the Husband usually gets some surf and turf plate. We came here with friends once, and both thought the salads were really good. The Mediterranean tepanade served with bread is yummy, a nice change from olive oil and vinegar or plain butter. Since we usually come here for dinners, I'm looking forward to a girls' outing planned at Misto's for brunch in the next few weeks. The best word to describe Misto's is 'reliable'. It seems to be patroned by many regulars, and that should speak for itself. Family friendly restaurant, it even has a lego table for the kids in the bakery section of the restaurant...which we really appreciate. I ordered the tomato basil bisque soup and it is hands down the creamiest, and delicious tasting soup ever. I also ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and asked them to add bacon and tomatoes. Having 3 teenagers and 1 small child, we can choose from chicken strips, to steak, meatloaf, salads, pasta and soups and much much more. Whatever your in the mood for they have the dish for you. I went there the other day while I was working on my lunch break. I walked in i wasn't sure if i should just go and sit or was wait to be seated. The young server lady came up to and made me feel like i didn't belong in this place and was rather rude. I asked her my 1st time here and like oh you want take out and no i wanted to sit. wasn't for the fact i was working in the that area and was very hungry i should left. I went there on 11/21/17 around noon after i was seated...bread basket with this olive oil thing. bread felt was left out uncover for days and that olive oil thing has no favor. The baja salad and tea they bought me was awful. the salad itself had a pinkish color to it. The chicken had no favor felt like i was eating cardboard. it was so bad over all Bland food, mediocre service, over-priced. Bread basket bread is awful! full salad was 14,.99... tea had to be 4 bucks total was 19.95 i give a trip due i felt bad and i understand they people working there make their money that way. No AC or Fans over 80 degrees, FLIES FLIES . Front door open, no screen, no air blower, violation health laws Flies, Lots and lots of flies, so many flies we couldnt get rid of them. Of course shutting the doors and windows and turning on the AC at 80F inside might have helped. Tormented eggs and half the serving missing, Sourdough toast, i dont think so, air bread, small dimensions thin sliced white bread. Just awful. There is a reason we havent been back for 5 years and took a chance after not being there 5 years before. Nasty condescending manager. Close it down. Stay away. Misto is one of my favorite Friday night dinners. I've been dining here for seven years and it's nice to support a local small business. The service is always good. They always start you off with a basket of bread and their delicious garlic, olive oil and garbanzo bean dip/spread. I usually order from their daily specials and am rarely disappointed. Last night my date had the special steak dianne with mashed potatoes and asparagus which was really tender and tasty. Thanks for sharing! I had the special linguine with chicken, spinach, sundried tomatoes, and mushrooms topped with feta. It was supposed to be with tomato sauce, but I asked about the tomato cream sauce and I got it. I love their tomato cream sauce! I like the pizza here too. And if I come for weekend brunch, I fill myself up on the scones/muffin basket. I love that morning bread basket! read more

I have been here on 6-7 occasions mostly for lunch and a couple of times for dinner. My dinner visits are generally because I was trying to visit nearby Il Toscano is closed because I forgot the hours. The lunches are pulled off better than the dinners, with Ok sandwiches being the go-to item. When I strayed to other choices on the menu such as the miserable fish & chips with its dense batter and frozen fish taste or the pastas drowning in thick cream sauce - I wish I had just stuck with the sandwiches. Quesadillas and pizza have been passable choices, but I would not pick this restaurant for a Mexican of Italian meal. Service has typically been good, but my last visit on Saturday night was punctuated by the staff completing their closing cleaning (moving tables, sweeping, stacking chairs) around us while we were finishing. At the end, pricing seems steep for what you get with our last visit being $31 for fish & chips and pasta with seafood. read more

Cute and cozy :) Good service and really yummy food. We went here for dinner and had a great time. There portions are pretty large, which is something I'd keep in mind if I went back in the future. My boyfriend and I ordered the tortilla soup and split the mediterranean pasta. At first the soup was almost too brothy, but it definitely grew on me! The pasta (which I think was a special) was really tasty, I loved the cheese and sun dried tomatoes. Also a highlight is the spread you get with the bread... so unique and flavorful! Great casual environment for lunch! The soft bread with hint of rosemary and dipping garlic oil was appetizing and also a good sign. My first try was Misto's Linguini Del Mar ($11.95) as lunch special. My friend had been recommending this place to me for a long time, and he finally took me here. He told me to try their "famous" Tortilla Soup, and am I glad I did. I ordered half a bowl of the soup, and half a plate of their shrimp salad. First came the soup. I was speechless...almost in a trance...as I devoured that giant bowl of soup along with the wide variety of ingredients and tastes.I remember thinking that I should have just ordered the full bowl of that soup. Then the shrimp salad came, and after I finished it and came out of yet another trance, I remember thinking that I should have just ordered the full plate. I'm a huge fan of desserts, but since I'm watching my weight, I didn't get to try any. However, I've heard that their desserts (the place being a bakery as well as a cafe) are the best things they have there. I was really excited to try this place out after reading all of the yelp reviews. I wanted to get the crab cakes benedict in particular since I don't get out much for brunches. I read the reviews that the benedicts were awesome and especially the hollandaise sauce. Well, when I got my crab cake benedicts, there was hardly any sauce on it. The crab cakes were not particularly great. They were okay. Not bad, but not great. They seemed a bit soggy under the poached eggs which I can understand. To make matters worse, I bit into a shell. At least I hope it was a shell. It felt like a rock. I had to spit it out on my plate. I substituted french fries instead of the breakfast potatoes which they were nice enough to do, but the fries were really soggy and limp. I was really sad since I had been craving crispy fries for a while. How can you mess up on french fries??? I did like the complimentary basket that they give to your table with muffins, scones, etc. The scone that I had was delicious. I don't think I would ever come back here though or recommend it to others. I'm sad that I read all of the yelp reviews and picked this place based on their recommendations. The staff is extremely kind and their lunch specials are fantastic deals for big and delicious portions. The parking is very easy to get in and out of and they have a really lovely patio to dine on if outside dining is preferred. read more

This is absolutely my favorite breakfast restaurant in the world! No other place can beat these muffins, breakfast quesadillas, or eggs benny. Sad it's not doing sit down right now, but can't wait for it to be back up and running! read more
