Decent coffee & food for a decent price, but definitely not my favorite place in town. I got a caramel latte this weekend, and it was rather sweet. I didn't even finish it. My friend got an iced vanilla latte, which was much less sweet and much better than mine. There's not much available for healthier options for breakfast. I went with my baby, and was hoping to get some fruit on the side for him. But they said they were out. I ended up getting a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant. It was tasty, but definitely very buttery! I also got a slice of veggie salsa quiche, which was good. The food isn't anything amazing, but gets the job done if you're hungry. Kinda typical menu items for a coffee shop. Also pretty cramped in there even if it's just a little busy because there's not much room for a line. I have been coming to this family owned coffee house for more than a decade! Whenever I had the afternoon off from work, I would meet up with my mom for a quick lunch. We always started out with the decadent Coca-Cola cake, and THEN we would have lunch! I recently went back, and got the Coca-Cola cake. It was sweet, and delicious! We shared the bowl of chicken gumbo, and their tortellini salad...THE BEST! The tortellini is served cold in a baked cheese bowl on top of greens. You need this in your life...it is savory, fresh, and has just the right amount of tang. Mitchell's also has a wide variety of coffee drinks, but they are so much more than a coffee house. The food is fresh, the staff is friendly, and the quaint setting makes this one of my favorite lunch spots more than ten years later. I don't mind the drive to Lakeland at all! read more

We came by while shopping downtown Lakeland and needed a drink to take with us. We ordered a Chai cider and Less sweet snicker Frozen latte. We waited about 10 minutes in the shop. Tables are social distanced and had many people working and studying. We liked our drinks but snickers was better.. We saw a piece of peanut butter cake that we will try next time. read more

Literally this place is so delicious! I always take a stroll to these guys when I'm just looking for a quiet place to venture off to. The coffee is great, the price is great, the atmosphere is homey. I didn't get a chance to try the food but I've been here twice and the customer service was really great both times! I am on a work assignment down the street from Mitchell's for a few months and really needed to find a nice, comfortable coffee shop where I could become a regular. I visit a few times each week and each time the team is very friendly, attentive and that's not even getting to their food. My favorite drink is the iced I dream of Genie and their breakfast croissant sandwiches, hot sandwiches, Mac & cheese, soups, etc. are all a treat. Ok, I rarely write reviews.. but someone has to say something. I bought 7 desserts for my family. Cinnamon roll, nectarine cake, coffee cake, carrot cake, cookie cake, brownie and a chocolate chip cookie. $40ish including $3 tip. The cinnamon roll was the worst of the bunch. There was like a weird skin on the roll that was dry and flaky. Awful. Super bland even though I heated it up with grassfed butter. The coffee cake was dry and bland as well. Cookie cake tasted old and should've been thrown away. You can tell it was old because the chocolate was starting to liquify. The carrot cake was bland and seemed old as well. The nectarine cake was ok, but dry and lacked flavor. The cookie was ok, but was a bit tough to eat. The brownie was the only thing I could say was pretty good and had flavor. Such a shame I wasted so much money. Everyone disliked everything except the brownie. I don't know who bakes the desserts.. but get more unbiased test subjects. Very charming place in old downtown. Went to breakfast while in town for a day trip. Coffee was good. (Not bold, which I dont like) Ordered the Keto Bowel and it was yummy! Fresh avacado on top. My sister did the Build your own Burrito. Was made fresh as well. You order at register and they bring to the table and periodically check in on you. No coffee refills but a 12 oz is $1.77-ish. Plenty of space to spread out. Can get a little noisy at peak time but not a huge deal. Will definitely save on my list to visit again. read more

Bored of the typical bar scene, I went to Mitchells one evening and it was closed. It was only 7 PM. So I checked their website and found that they close at 5 PM except on Fridays. What kind of a coffee house closes at 5 PM? None that I have seen. So, I went on a Friday and it was closed again. Annoying! I was in the area during lunch time and I saw that Mitchells was verifiably open. So I went inside. I ordered a double shot of espresso and a bowl of gumbo. They served the espresso in a large paper cup which is basically a punishable offense in Italy. They even had cute little espresso cups sitting on a shelf and yet, they served the espresso in a paper cup in which they would otherwise serve regular coffee. Disappointing! The burnt taste of the coffee made it worse. No floral or nutty flavors, in fact, no flavors other than burnt coffee flavor. I prefer to get my burnt coffee fix from Starbucks, not from a neighborhood coffee house. (kidding, Starbucks is gross and I dont go there) The gumbo was different. Different good. Word is that a secret recipe was whispered in the ears of the owner (Mitchell?) by a mysterious gypsy. Anyway, the food was tasty and the service was quick. The dining room was clean with a laid-back vibe to it. I recommend more book shelves with books. There was some "art" on the walls. They were distorted black and white photographs of doorways. They gave me a head ache. They change the art regularly, and in this case, not frequently enough. Mitchells Coffee House, like its neighboring coffee houses follows an unspoken rule: Illusion of a coffee-house-culture is used like bait to lure unsuspecting people to try the food. Maybe food sales have higher profits than coffee sales do, but that is no reason to serve yucky espresso in paper cups. I feel deceived. Not impressed. read more

Mitchels was our little oasis when we were in Lakeland for an extended family visit. We were able to escape to this awesome little place to get some good coffee, have a decent breakfast, connect up to the WiFi and get some work done. We found ourselves on more than one day spending most of the day camped out at a table getting coffee, breakfast, sweet tea the lunch. The staff were awesome and didn't mind at all that we basically used their place as our office for a couple weeks. read more

It's a great place to pop in for an hour, check your email, and take in the eclectic downtown Lakeland clientele. It gets quite full around lunch time, so know that finding a table will be more difficult during that time period, and if you're lucky enough to find a table, keeping it may be a different story. The lunchtime vultures were definitely swarming and noting the low level of liquid in my coffee cup. This is a large room with a full service espresso bar, pastries, home made cakes and pies, and always brewing 4 different brews (unlike st@rbucks who brews 1 coffee only)... Lunch is served from 11-2 every day and they now offer breakfast before that. This is a TRUE Local spot in Lakeland. They don't try to act like a chain like other cafes in the area. The daily special is written on a dry erase board to the left of the counter every day, so check that out for one-of-a-kind daily combos. Other than Starbucks there isn't much espresso in Lakeland. One of the good alternatives is Mitchell's. The espresso is good quality, the people are friendly and there is ample room to set up for some work/reading/whatever. The wifi is a bit odd being that they leave the default vendor name (linksys I believe) but hey, it's theres, it's free and it works. They also have some great chocolate chip cookies. I think I gained a few pounds just from the cookies this past Christmas. read more

The original coffee house, as I remember it. I haven't been here in a 10 years, as I do not live in Lakeland anymore. The service was good. Honestly the best part of the experience. I got the daily special, which was tomatoe soup and grilled cheese. Quite frankly lacked pizzazz. The atmosphere was that of a dilapidated convalescent home. Broken, overly dusty ceiling fans (be on the look out for falling dust balls, no exaggeration), lack of vibrant, lively color, chipped and beat up walls with the restrooms looking like something out of the 80's.
