Went to Modi today for a coworker's birthday lunch and had a delicious meal. The restaurant is sort of outdoors but a covered space surrounded by windows that somehow feels open, cozy, and trendy all at once. I ordered the Focaccia Prosciutto Crudo and the balance of flavors was perfect. The real star though, was the focaccia itself. It was SO good that it convinced me I need to come back just to try their pizza. If the focaccia was that good, I just know the pizza crust will slap. We also shared the tiramisu churros for dessert and they were super tasty. A fun twist on two desserts I already love. Service was great too. Our server was attentive, checked on us throughout the meal, and even told us about their sister restaurant, Ciaorigato, which is now on my list to visit. All in all, a great lunch and definitely a spot I'd come back to explore more of the menu! read more

this spot was walking distance to the office, so we came here for a team lunch. i was curious to try italian-mexican, as i don't think i've seen a concept like this before. the waitress was very kind and efficient :) and we liked the covered outdoor space. we tried a variety of dishes, which we found to appear italian but were actually made with mexican ingredients. the branzino and ceviche were tasty - and the other dishes were quite creative, although not particularly standouts. lasagna should be made with traditional pasta sheets haha, i don't think the corn tortilla texture works with the dish. all in all, a solid lunching experience, though we enjoyed the atmosphere more than the food. read more

GREAT SERVICE! 4.3 Our most recent stay in the SOMA District brought us to Modí, an Italian-Mexican fusion restaurant, specifically inspired by Tulum, tucked beneath the beautiful Salesforce Park. The concept immediately intrigued us, so we made a reservation. Its location was perfect for a leisurely 10-minute walk from our hotel. We've dined at Italian-Japanese restaurants in Japan and Italian-Korean restaurants in Hong Kong, but until now, we had yet to experience Italian-Mexican cuisine. We were warmly greeted by the host and seated in the semi-enclosed outdoor patio area. Since it was an early dinner at 5:30 p.m., we had our choice of seating. Three other parties were already dining, including a group of ten, and it appeared that everyone was seated outside. Perhaps the indoor dining area had not yet opened for service. Regardless, it was a beautiful day, and dining al fresco was the perfect choice. Our server, Tomàs, was exceptional. Friendly, energetic, and engaging, he added to the restaurant's festive atmosphere. Since it was our first visit to Modí, he took the time to explain the concept and offer his recommendations. He also spoke warmly of the chef, describing him as a wonderful man who takes great pride in his cooking. Here is what we ordered: Chips & Basil Guacamole ~ Freshly warmed, house-made corn chips accompanied by basil guacamole and topped with Parmesan cheese. This was some of the freshest, chunkiest guacamole I've ever tasted. Although basil was mentioned in the description, I couldn't detect any basil incorporated into the guacamole itself; there was simply a single basil leaf resting on top as a garnish. Tomàs also brought us two dipping sauces, one of which he called Morita chili salsa. Both were absolutely delicious and a great accompaniment to the chips. Branzino Achiote Pesto Fusion (gluten-free option) ~ Butterflied grilled branzino, with one half marinated in achiote and the other in arugula pesto, served alongside roasted potatoes and grilled nopales. Nopales are the edible pads of the prickly pear cactus. They had a wonderful citrusy tang that really enlivened the dish. The potatoes were lightly salted with beautifully crisp edges. Because the fish was butterflied and grilled flat, it was slightly overcooked, but the accompanying sauces helped restore some moisture. Birria Lasagna ~ Layers of birria beef, traditional lasagna pasta, tomato sauce, and creamy béchamel, baked together with melted mozzarella. Fusion cuisine has existed for centuries, evolving through colonization, trade routes, migration, and the exchange of culinary traditions. At Modí, the most apparent merging of cultures comes through the combination of ingredients and the restaurant's creative presentation. Overall, we found the food enjoyable. As exceptional as the guacamole was, however, I was hoping for a more pronounced fusion of flavors and ingredients rather than simply a basil leaf placed atop the dish. The service was the BEST, thanks to Tomàs, and the atmosphere was wonderfully festive. On our next visit, we'd love to explore some of the heartier meat dishes and sample more of the appetizers. Perhaps dining with a small group would be ideal, allowing everyone to share and experience a wider selection of dishes while giving us a better opportunity to discover Modí's interpretation of Italian-Mexican fusion. read more

We took Tomas' recommendations and ordered: Chips & Basil Guacamole - freshly made guacamole with basil, served with homemade corn chips. Very crunchy chips made scooping up the guacamole a sensory pleasure. Birria Lasagna - lasagna made with layers of Birria beef instead of traditional ground beef. The beef was more like shredded beef. This is really more traditional Italian than than a fusion dish. Branzino Achiote Pesto Fusion - this was my wife's dish, a whole Branzino marinated 1/2 Achiote and 1/2 Pesto and grilled. The Achiote was the better tasting half, but the fish was a little dry and boney. What made Modi standout is the service. Our waters were constantly refilled. Tomas checked in with us several times. I recently visited this fantastic restaurant at Salesforce with my best friend and colleagues. Despite the busy First Thursdays event, the lively atmosphere only enhanced the experience. Went with a group of 8. I was surprised to see that they had a group even bigger than that at an other table that they were able to accommodate for. Service was phenomenal despite the chaos of both tables. Our server was nice, funny, and very very efficient. Just for the service I would bring a big group here again. We for a bunch of food family style and this was the way to go. For the appetizer, everyone loved the cactus and the Cesar salad. Both were unique spin offs from their original dishes. The elotes were a close second. For entrees we got double of the lasagna and the ravioli. I think majority liked the lasagna best and couple of the people liked the ravioli better. The pizza diabla was not spicy alone, but it came with 3 side sauces and chili flakes that completed the dish. The sauces were delicious and hit the pizza home. For dessert we were disappointed with the tiramisu churro. The churro tasted like a regular churro. Not much tiramisu about it. However for a regular churro, it was good. Couple of people loved the mousse and the cheesecake was standard. I think this is a great place for appetizers and entrees. May want to get dessert elsewhere but this was not bad enough to knock off a star. One last thing. For a place this big and busy, I did find it odd that they only had 1 bathroom. After two incredible visits (one for happy hour with the #YEShusband, and one for a team dinner), Modi has officially earned its spot in my regular rotation. Located on the street level of the Salesforce Transit Center, it offers a great covered patio and a cozy interior. On our first visit, we sat at the bar and went in knowing we would want to try a few unique items. The bartender, Jiro, was friendly and knowledgeable--he was also very accommodating when we asked him to put the Giants game on the TV. -Sueño De Amalfi (Tito's Vodka, Limoncello, Agave, Lime, Basil): Lemony and strong! This is a great starter drink since it's alcohol forward, and the flavors are all potent, -Dulce Vita (Yotobi Pina Mezcal, Passion Fruit, Aperol, Lime): The #YEShusband is a big passionfruit fan, and really enjoyed this one! The mezcal is a nice balance to the tart passionfruit and aperol. -Aperol Spritz: Refreshing! This was a perfect drink to sip while also enjoying the decadent food! -Chips & Salsa: complimentary; these were good and I really enjoyed the salsa verde. -Fresh Oysters (Daily selection of locally sourced oysters, served with house-made mango mezcal mignonette and watermelon sorbet): Exceptionally fresh. The mango mezcal mignonette and watermelon sorbet are creative, delicious pairings. Jiro gave us a side shot of mezcal which complemented the mignonette- perks of sitting at the bar! -Trompitos Al Pastor (Tender Wagyu beef in soft tortillas, topped with gorgonzola cream, arugula, and pickled red onions): So flavorful and tasty! I would have preferred if they layered the pineapple with the meat instead of one piece at the wide end of the skewer. Would still order again. -Tacos Lobster (Succulent lobster, creamy avocado, crisp slaw, lime crema, fresh cilantro, all wrapped in a warm tortilla): Worth the splurge. They don't skimp on the lobster, and the lime crema ties it all together perfectly. -Birria Lasagna (Layers of tender birria beef, traditional lasagna pasta, tomato sauce, and creamy béchamel, all baked with mozzarella): If you can only order one item, make this THE ONE. The birria is tender and packed with flavor; the pasta is on the thinner side, yet still keeps the dish together; and THE SAUCE...just go ahead and order extra and thank me later. -Churro Tiramisu: We don't usually order dessert, but glad that we ordered this! This is actually four small churros served over a whipped sweet cream. A perfect way to end our meal! Bringing a work group here was a total win. Came here for lunch on a Saturday - definitely less busy than a weekday and we were seated right away. We started off with the guacamole, which was really good. It had flakes of Parmesan cheese, which was unique. I got the shrimp tacos, and wasn't too impressed. I think there were some sauces that weren't listed on the menu, and they were not very good. The shrimp was also kinda flavorless. I would definitely pass on the tacos here. The restaurant itself is spacious and really pretty, and the service was good. Well it started off nice but Unfortunately, it ended up being a horrible way to start our evening. We had a 5:00 PM reservation, so the restaurant was not busy yet. The space itself is nice, and we were greeted warmly and seated outside. Our server was sweet and clearly trying his best, but he seemed completely lost. He didn't know the menu and had to repeatedly go back and ask another staff member questions. It looked like several employees were running around in circles, even though there were very few customers. The entire operation felt very disorganized. The appetizers and salads were actually good, which gave us hope. Our main dishes took about an hour to arrive and when they finally did, both the steak and chicken were cold. There's really no excuse for serving cold entrees after such a long wait. The flavors themselves were good, but that didn't make up for the temperature and the delay. We had a show at 7:00 PM and needed to leave by 6:30, so we ended up asking when our food would be coming. When it finally arrived we ate it without complaint since we were starving, on a tight schedule and of course we didn't want to ruin our own Valentine's Day, which also happened to be my birthday dinner. Because we realized how late it was, we asked for our dessert to go, which took another 10-15 minutes to sort out. Overall, the service was a complete mess. To be fair, I don't blame our waiter. There were white lights illuminating the place & nice tile tables. There was a huge tv where we were sitting that was showing places in Italy. Service was great. The serve complimentary chips & salsa. We ordered some of the dishes that the waiter recommended. I got the lasagna which was really good. The meat was more like pulled pork not the usual minced hamburger meat. I love a lot of sauce and this was just right. My friend had the fish. It was good but not as good as my lasagna. Really enjoyed this spot overall. The menu is creative and the flavors are thoughtfully put together. The al pastor pizza was excellent, and the cauliflower absolutely stole the show. Bold and delicious and something I'd order again without hesitation. We split both the chicken and steak entrées since everything sounded good. The chicken was the winner with the crisp skin, tender meat, and that sauce - muy bueno - that pulled the whole dish together. The crispy potatoes were perfectly done. The steak dish, on the other hand, missed the mark a bit. We ordered medium rare and it came out firmly rare. Flavor was good, but I ended up taking most of it home to cook again for round two. The polenta was fine, but not memorable. I'll skip this dish on my next outing here. Dessert was solid but different expectations presentation-wise. The churro tiramisu leaned much more churro than tiramisu, though the flavor was good. Cocktails were a mixed bag: the espresso martini was good, and the Smoked Oak had nice flavor, but the presentation felt off. Getting a glass that looked only a third full made it seem like something was missing, though the flavors both complemented and contrasted the dishes. We sat outside on a cool evening, which in hindsight wasn't the move on my end. The metal chairs never really warmed up, the heaters only helped a little, and well... city smells are still city smells. That part's on me, too. Service, though, was great across the board - friendly, attentive, and welcoming. TLDR; I really liked the flavors here and I'll definitely be back. I liked this innovative take on lasagna, but I ultimately found it to be a bit dry and needing more sauce. The birria was tender enough, but it lacked substantial flavor. 4. TUNA TOSTADAS (3/5) Tuna didn't have much flavor and I didn't enjoy the balsamic glaze combo in this dish. Tostada was crunchy, but it (like the free chips) doesn't have much of a taste either. 5. STREET CORN (3/5) I think this is personal preference. We had our office holiday lunch here last week. Thomas was our server and despite being very busy with other large and small tables all coming for lunch, he was great at communicating his and the kitchen's bandwidth so we but could get our food and drink orders placed efficiently and without feeling rushed which, honestly is quite an impressive skill. He was very personable and cracked jokes and was great about checking up on us throughout the meal despite being quite busy. The food was stellar as well! We ordered calamari and ceviche for the table to share and we all enjoyed (mostly) large portions of very tasty food. The pizzas are probably the biggest bang for your buck as they are indeed quite large whereas the ravioli, pasta and lasagna were just about right. They have an indoor patio option along with tables inside the restaurant, and after eating at both, the patio option was surprisingly warmer. The restaurant was hosting what looked to be a company holiday event on one side of the patio during my most recent visit, yet they managed to deliver our food efficiently and provide solid service throughout the meal. I came in for the SF Restaurant Week Prix Fixe menu. It was $65 for a salad, appetizer, entree, and dessert. A great deal for this spot. We ordered 2 sets of the Prix Fixe option and an additional pizza Diabla. Both salads were really good but I liked the Cesar better. It was well dressed and had good flavor. For the appetizers, we ordered the octopus and beef tartare. The octopus was surprisingly very easy to chew and had a nice smoky flavor. The beef tartare was overpowered by the sauce. I wish there were more non seafood options available on the Prix Fixe menu. The Elote ravioli was good but the birria lasagna greatly outshined it. It's one of their signature dishes for a reason. The flavor was deep. The cheeses complimented the meat in both flavor and texture. We were fighting to see who gets to eat the last bite. The pizza diabla was good but I had the same experience as many others. The jalapeño slices are on the thicker side. But a bad option though. We devoured the pizza. The churro was good but a little tough. The sorbet and diced fruit was good. The service was good. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. They gave complimentary chips to start which was okay but I can't really critique too much since it was part of the meal. The chips were a bit stale. The birria lasagna is their most popular dish and I thought it was okay. I tasted more tomato and cheese than birria and consommé flavors. They do have onions which is standard for birria, and the amount of meat is fairly generous. It was an interesting experience but I didn't like it as much as I hoped. Churro tiramisu was amazing. The churro is of the right texture and the mascarpone and espresso really meshed well with the churro. I enjoy this more than a regular tiramisu! The portions are huge though even though it is 4 pieces, as the mascarpone is quite heavy, so it is better to share this dessert with another person. Found this place on Yelp (shout out!) while looking for a new spot to have dinner during a staycation in The City. Modi had great reviews, and we loved the idea of an Italian and Mexican fusion restaurant. We'd gone in knowing a few items we definitely wanted to try, and a handful more that we were interested in, but not fully attached to. Another reason we chose Modi was that we noticed they had a TV in the bar area, and were looking for a place to watch the Giants game while we ate. When we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the host who walked us back to the bar area where the TV was. When we sat down, we were the only ones on that side of the restaurant. There was something else on, though the bartender/mixologist Jiro, happily changed the channel to accommodate our request. DRINKS: The cocktail menu looked fun, and we saw Jiro mixing up some tasty looking drinkies, so we knew we had to start there. We tried: -Dulce Vita ($18): I was going between this and another drink, and Jiro recommended this one since it was more unique. I took his advice, and was glad I did! Yum! -Sueño De Amalfi ($18): The wifey ordered this one and really enjoyed it! I tasted it, and loved that it was light and refreshing. -Aperol Spritz ($16): A classic that we fell in love with on our trip to Europe. Another super refreshing drink that was perfectly made! They also have a large selection of other drink options including (but not limited to): Wine, beer, spirits, mocktails, soda, Mexican Coke/Sprite, iced tea, ginger beer, Italian soda and water (still & sparkling)! FOOD: This is the main reason we came. There were lots of dishes that looked and sounded good based on our research heading in. One of the items we knew we HAD to have was the Birria Lasagna. Basically every review ranted and raved about it, and all the photos made it look amazing. Our plan was to split a few things over the course of our time there while we relax and watch the game. We got: -Chips & Salsa: These were complementary just for sitting down. The chips were multicolored, and the salsa was a fresh salsa verde. -Fresh Oysters (6 for $24, 12 for $45): We really enjoyed these! They tasted fresh, and the mezcal mignonette and watermelon granita were super unique and put a whole different twist on classic oysters. Juri gave us a side shot of mezcal that he said paired well with the dish because of the mignonette. This felt like something that only happened because we were at the bar, not something they would have brought to us at a table. -Trompitos Al Pastor ($17): These were tender and flavorful. The only complaint would be that the pineapple was only at the very bottom of the skewer. I would have liked to have it layered so I could more easily have bites of both without getting to the end. -Tacos Lobster ($32): These were on the pricier side, but really good! They didn't skimp on the amount of the meat, as there were lots of hearty chunks of flavorful lobster. The lime crema on top was a perfect complement. -Birria Lasagna ($28): This was definitely the star or the show. Two things I love mixed into one. We were blessed with a deliciously crispy piece that was incredibly mouthwatering! The meat was tender, the sauce was tasty, and the crunchy cheese side pieces were to die for. Make sure you order this when you come here. DESSERT: They have around five (5) dessert options, including cheesecake, chocolate mousse, Mexican affogato, tropical fruit salad, and the one we ordered... -Churro Tiramisù ($14): The presentation on this was lovely, and the taste was even better! Such a delicious combination of flavors, and loved the cool contrast the cream provided to the warm churros. I would definitely recommend this one, and get it again next time! They also have a selection of Digestivos and coffee drinks to end the night with if that's your thing. OVERALL: We loved our first experience at Modi! The staff were all very friendly, and the food was exquisite! Special shout out to Jiro for all the helpful recs and friendly, attentive service throughout. We ended up randomly being given celebratory shots with a group who came in and sat next to us at the bar toward the end of our meal-it turned out to be the owner! Date of Visit: 8/21/2025 Opened back in 2024, Modi is a new Italian-Mexican fusion restaurant located in the Salesforce Transit Center in the Financial District in San Francisco. Modi blends the vibrant flavors of Mexico with the culinary traditions of Italy. We visited on a Thursday evening, and were sited on the patio. The patio was fully covered, so it was warm enough in the summer of San Francisco. The complimentary welcome snack is the chips with salsa. Dulce Vita $18 Husband got the Dulce Vita cocktail which was made with Yotobi Pina mezcal, Aperol, passion fruit, and lime. Well balanced and smooth. Zesty Sip $12 I ordered the mocktail which was made with Sid leap Agave, strawberry puree, and citrus. Aperol Spritz $16 And my husband got another cocktail after finishing the first one. This is a traditional cocktail with aperol, prosecco, and soda water. Street Corn Romano $15 We got the grilled corn on the cob topped with house-made chipotle mayonnaise and Pecorino Romano. Six cut pieces of corn on the cob were grilled and topped with all the sauces. Great appetizer. Pizza Al Pastor $26 For the main dish, we got the pizza with pastor pork sliced, and topped with pineapple, red onion, cilantro, and a blend of mozzarella and Oaxaca cheese, all on a wood-fired crust. I came here for a work lunch with 3 colleagues, and we were impressed with the amount of food that we were able to get for the price! It came out to just over $130 all in, and we each had a main dish, a drink, an appetizer and dessert. Came by a second time for lunch and experienced a different food experience than my first time. Party of three for a late afternoon lunch and was sat right away for outdoor dining on their beautiful, spacious patio. Fantastic service from our waitress who was energetic. The food is where things started to get a bit inconsistent. Last time I tried the birria lasagna and I loved it, and I still do, but I wanted to try new dishes this time. - Jicama salad - crunchy refreshing salad that I genuinely enjoyed for a hot day - Ravioli was my favorite dish of this lunch and featured flavorful mushrooms in a cream sauce - Pineapple al pastor pizza - we actually got a different pizza from this one that we ordered but the staff was kind to let us keep the mistake pizza and resend a fresh order for the correct pizza. The pizza we accidentally received was a chorizo and jalapeno pizza. Chorizo was okay but the jalapenos were really chunky sliced and overpowering. Then we got our correct pizza, the pineapple al pastor which conceptually sounded really cool. Unfortunately, I didn't detect much pineapple and the al pastor had a really off putting grainy soft texture. Doughs of both pizza were solid though. Not going to lie, this is hovering at a very low 3, round up from a high 2. The good: The space is lovely and large with plenty of outdoor seating, wonderful when that SF weather hits. And the service was fantastic. The food is where things got a bit dicey. The ravioli was really good with a light cream sauce and mushrooms. Cooked well and flavorful. The 2 pizzas we ordered were too much and not in a good way. While the crust was fine, everything else just didn't work. The cheese and chorizo just didn't mess and the cheese was a bit hard and just big slices of jalapenos, it was a miss. The pineapple al pastor pizza was an even bigger miss with al pastor meat being extremely tough and grainy and too much for the 'za. The jicama salad was interesting. It was tasty and crunchy, and the added shrimp protein was the best part. It worked. I don't know if I'd recommend, but it worked. Overall, fine? For an expensed work lunch, it was fine. I'd stick to the pastas as I found the mash up of Mexican and pizza did not work here. read more

Modi has a wonderful ambience, the outdoors seating is perfect for a good meal. I have liked the happy hour in the past and this time tried the lunch options. I'd say the burrito was meh, and not something I'd go back again for. The food doesn't meet the expectations from such a beautiful restaurant. read more

I came in with my girlfriend's for a birthday dinner and we had such a nice experience at Modi. Our server Dan was so kind, patient and helpful with the menu and wine selections. He took very good care of us the whole time. The space is really gorgeous and good for groups. We ordered the ceviche which none of us really loved. The Caesar salad was good, but I thought the dressing was too heavy. We all really loved the Birria Lasagna, Risotto Milano Mexico DF and Spaghetti Chorizo and Clams. Delicious!! The food was a fun Mexican Italian fusion and it was delicious! Our waiter was able to help guide our decisions for vegetarian food and he was good guide. The atmosphere was good but we didn't realize that the restaurant is on the first floor of the Salesforce transit station. It was warm with heated lamps on a cool SF evening which added to the comfort. The parmigiana di nopales and the pizza hutlacoche stood out as unique. The ravioli elote e funghi was delicious but didn't feel like as much fusion so we enjoyed the other dishes more. Overall, definitely a good dinner spot! read more
