Traveling with a gluten- and dairy-free in-law with very little travel experience was stressful because the unique dietary restrictions drastically reduced the options. Additionally, my wife and I wanted them to enjoy NYC and not be worried about what they're going to eat. Modern Bread and Bagel didn't just deliver on offering a menu that allowed her to choose something she might enjoy, they delivered on gluten- and dairy-free food that could have fooled me into thinning otherwise! Here, you won't find any of the stereotypical sad, dense, dry breads of the numerous grocery store brands producing gluten-free products. The Avo & Smoke open faced bagel is loaded with smashed avocado and smoked salmon. Without the bright, acidic freshness from the pickled onions and lemon, the meal would have easily been too heavy and fatty. Again, it is open faced and the avocado tended to squeeze out of the bagel hole so it is a bit messy - I do not recommend eating it on the go. Now that you're not going to attempt eating this while walking, you'll need to find somewhere to sit. This is the tricky part. Seating is extremely limited. The smaller tables are cozy - meant for two people, four if two people don't mind sitting on laps or half of the bench. There are two larger tables that can comfortably seat four. This might not make dining in a big deal, but it is busy in the morning because like you, everyone else in NYC is coming for breakfast. If there are no seats, being watchful for clues when a table might be opening up will help you snag a seat. And if that doesn't work and the weather is nice out, al fresco is always a lovely option. Holy moly I'm in gluten free heaven. I ordered the breakfast grilled cheese and I know New York is expensive but this was cheaper than another less yummy bagel sandwich I had the day before - this was $15ish dollars. I miss this bagel sandwich. It came out nice and hot with large amounts of the homemade onion jam (literally to die for... must be caramelized onions), whose sweeter notes complimented the savory and rich truffle aioli well. The cheddar blend was nice and melty and there was a lot of egg. I gobbled this down but also tried to savor it because so yummy. The sesame bagel itself was soft and didn't crumble. Not too chewy. Decent size. Was tasty for sure but with all the fix-ins I couldn't properly appreciate the bagel flavor. It did seem more moist than the Trader Joe's bagels I typically buy, which I like. There were some gluten free baked goods as well... we went back the next day for their cinnamon rolls and THIS WAS THE BEST CINNAMON ROLL IVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. I'm pretty excited about it as you can tell. It was so cinnamon-y and fluffy yet dense yet not heavy weighing you down. There was a good amount of the cream cheese frosting and some places skimp out on that. Every single bite was magical and that's hard to perfect. I also miss this. No picture because I was too excited to dive in... easily shared with another person. Heat it up for best yumminess. I built my own open face bagel sandwich here with lox and veggies. It was staggeringly good. Like I could not tell it was a gluten free bagel at all. The coffee I got here was ok, they were out of a few syrups but I got the lavender latte which did not have enough coffee in it, mostly lavender syrup. Aside from the fact that it was nearly $15 when all was said and done, it was delicious, steaming hot, and very filling. So this isn't something that I would buy on a regular basis and only as an occasional splurge now and then, I appreciate having a solid meal option when I need one. The top of the bagel was not crunchy, the inside was not chewy and it had a weird taste. I attributed it to the vegan sausage and kept in eating. Halfway through, I was done with the weird taste so I decided to open the bagel. It was burnt! I'd never had a burnt bagel before so I couldn't figure that one out. The hot bagels are not toasted as the others are and come from a different part of the kitchen. Just had an amazing experience. Walked in at noon ordered twice because we couldn't decide on everything and over the course of our exchange, we received an incorrect bagel. My daughter is celiac and the location is gluten-free so it wasn't like it was dangerous for her that she was too polite to correct them and was just quietly eating the wrong bagel outside. Suddenly one of the employees tapped on the glass to alert us that she had another one for us and it was all smiles and apologies. The food is fantastic, even though it's gluten-free.
