Love this place! Their sandwiches are usually on point and they have great outdoor seating with a glimpse of the ocean on a good day. Parking is usually hard, but with the parking god we were able to find street parking. I ordered the prosciutto adding sundried tomato paste and my boyfriend ordered the Italian sandwich, both one footer. We sat outside since it was a beautiful day and waited for our food. My boyfriend seemed to enjoy his sandwich, but I was in love with mine! It was just the way I want it and the way I would make it also. Modica's is one of my go to restaurants, mostly because I can walk there, but also because it's tasty Italian food, amazing and fun ambiance, and a great deal for big families. Orsa, the owner, is incredibly invested in this community, and promoting public safety for residents, business owners, and everyone else around. I was really impressed when I saw one of the servers being out food for one of the local homeless. This is place with heart and compassion, and it shows in their food. My boys love this place because they can get a lot of really yummy food, for not a lot of dough. I've had the beef lasagna, veggie lasagna, lobster ravioli, and goat cheese toasts here and it NEVER disappoints. My boys have had the spicy meatballs and chicken Parmesan and rave about it. You get a big entree dish.. AND salad... AND lots of bread. The wines are also delish - my hubby is a bit of an enophile and loves their selection. On Wednesdays and Fridays they have live music, which is so fun! We moved nearby in October. They had an amazing Gatsby night, with a jazz trio (maybe quartet, don't remember now) that was dressed to the period and playing music from the period. So many locals came and were also dressed up to the period, as were the servers. Our server was Tyler that night. He gave us the community scoop when we told him We just moved in. And now... we're part of the locals group that frequent Modica's. Two stars because the pastrami sandwich was pretty okay. Ordered a bow tie and fruit salad and both were gross the salad was a mix of watermelon, cantaloupe honeydew and pineapple, it had a slimy coating as when it's old. The cantaloupe was sour and don't remember the last time I had sour cantaloupe. The bow tie was also old and had a really bad after taste (very bitter) I think it's just old or the fact that both salads were not cold their refrigerator is not working. As usual they continue to be rude and unfriendly. Maybe they are really trying hard to be an authentic NY deli. Either way I'm done with this place. Crispy crust and light interior allows the bread to soak of the au jeax and it doesn't crumble or dissolve. One evening, I had a sudden crave for pastrami, so I came to this restaurant and ordered the World Famous Pastrami 8" sandwich with cheese. The sandwich packed with loads of meat! Lots and lots of meat. The cheese melted perfectly on top. This was a meat-lovers paradise. It also came with few peperoncinis on the side. The bread was soft, and the 8" sandwich was more than I can handle for a single serving. I loved the sandwich, but not to knock on the dish, I thought it could be better if they had added some lettuce and tomatoes to buffer the salty taste of the pastrami -- fours stars for the quantity over price. Today I told a friend to meet me for a drink and late lunch and I kind of wish I had chosen elsewhere. Wanted to order something from the menu but since it was 3:56pm and not exactly 4pm the very put upon young man behind the register said I couldn't order it. Ok fine. I order something else...the penne meatball special. Bland. Literally like they just poured store bought sauce on top of some old meatballs. Soggy salad. Uhhh such a bummer bc I've met the owner before and she is awesome. But man, some of the servers here are very over it. And it shows in the food as well. Also, menu prices are not updated. We needed a light lunch and this deli had quick and fresh sandwiches on delicious baguettes. It wasn't busy when I arrived and only waited 3-5 minutes for my food to go. The bread was super soft and the deli meat was flavorful. They have a great selection of craft beer and wine as well as desserts. They only had 2 flavors of gelato but their carrot and chocolate cake slices looked divine. I ordered the 8" chicken parm ($8.95). Modica's also offers deli faves like pastrami, club, meatball as well as other cold sandwiches at similar pricing. They also offer a 16" version of any sandwich if you want to fall asleep. My sandwich was winnahz. The chicken was moist and plentiful, and the roll had the perfect amount of crunch. I was satisfied visually and gastronomically. My colleague ordered a pastrami and it was packed with meat. When I have a cheat day, I'll definitely be back to try the pastrami: 5 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, its an order at the counter we'll bring your food to you kind of place. You can also phone your order in advance and order delivery: 4 Stars. They take and deliver your food promptly, and everyone is friendly. You order your food and pay at the counter, take a number and find a table, and wait for your food to be delivered. I ordered quite a bit of food from them on a scheduled paint night collaboration. The staff that took my order was very friendly and I tipped as well, though we were not dining in. I had specifically mentioned that I did not want cheese on anything which included the pastrami sandwich that I ordered. By the time I got home and realized it was mixed with cheese I had already taken a bite, which left me with an awful stomachache. What a gem!! We were strolling around after dropping off some mail at the post office when we came across this spot. At first, we weren't really sure what type of restaurant it was because the outside looked "too" nice, but once we went inside and realized it was deli, we were kinda shocked! I mean, you normally don't see a deli that spruced up with a cute dining area in Long Beach, most of the time it's in some grocery store or bodega. Anywho, we are huge foodies, so I tried the chicken parm and my partner who just loves food, ordered two subs, one was supposed to be for "later" --yea right!! He ended up eating both in that sitting and he very much enjoyed it! I was able to sneak a bit of the meatball sub, and OH WOW! That was some amazing flavor! I'm not much of a pastrami person, so I couldn't said much of it other than it had good taste. As for the carrot cake, it was very creamy and sweet! It was a pretty big slice and we were already pretty full from the subs so we save the rest of the cake for later. Lastly, workers are all so friendly! I think they even do some local deliveries to near by condos because we saw a worker ride around his bike dropping off food but didn't seem like it was with a food delivery company like UberEats or GrubHub. We were meeting friends for the Long Beach Art Walk and they suggested that we meet at Modica before exploring. We had never been here before, and funny enough, neither had they. It turned out to be a great suggestion! The deli is housed in one of the historic buildings in downtown LBC with a sight line to the water. The menu offered simple fare that was more than enough to satisfy. My partner chose the pastrami sandwich - good bread, with a "secret sauce" that he deemed noteworthy. I'm a spaghetti guy, just add meatballs and sausage and I'm good. It, too, hit the spot. We both partook in the wine flight offering which made for fun dining adventure. Sadly, we were not able to order any of the desserts- chocolate cake, cannoli, brownie, etc...they remained cold and chilling inside the refrigerated display case. This has been one of my lunch spots for awhile now and the sandwiches have been great. My go-to sub is the 8" Heart Attack Jack. The bread and ingredients are always fresh. The jalapeño and pepper jack adds a nice kick to each bite. You can't really go wrong with any of the sandwiches. I haven't been disappointed yet. The daily sandwich combo specials are another nice option I'll get which includes chips and drink for an affordable price. There are also a few daily specials as well. I've only had the hot and cold sandwiches here. I have yet to try the plated items. Hope to try and share an update. Service is friendly and prompt. It does get busy at peak dining hours, but it's not too bad of a wait considering Modica's is located in downtown LB. A couple of observations on the sandwiches. - Ingredients can get a bit skimpy at times. - There is an option for a lettuce wrap. But the last couple times I tried it, it was almost like eating a ton of lettuce with little meat and cheese. Unless you like to eat more lettuce than other ingredients, this might be for you.
