Of course, they have the usual gourmet coffee options of lattes and cappuccinos but they also have unique island flavors, like lavender and hibiscus. The ladies here are very personable and will help you find what you're looking for. Coffee an pastries are very good. They also have Gluten Free goodies. My son tried Gluten Free banana bread and pumpkin bread; moist and yummy. I had coffee and chai at different occasions. Chai was okay, too strong on spices for my taste, needs to be toned down a bit. I have seen a lot of people in the mornings on my way out to Hanalei and I finally made it there the other day. We ordered a latte and espresso, which tasted good. The only thing I would say is if you're in a rush then don't go there because if there's a bunch of people it might take awhile to get your order. My brother brought me to the best little side of the road coffee spot I have been to since I lived in Seattle. Not complicated at all. Simply great coffee! They had a bunch of options available, but not in a "so many options and terms that you need to take a night course in engineering to order a cup of coffee that you will like" kind of way. Cute little RV parked on the side of the road with a decent amount of seating for those who want to sit and enjoy their coffee/pastries. Coffee is strong and in my opinion, one of the better coffee options on the island. I do however wish there were more Hawaiian influenced flavor options such as mac nut or mocha coconuts, etc. Nonetheless, lots of classic options and a lot of vegan/nut milk options. I opted for their toddy cold brew with caramel and it was perfect - subtle caramel flavor and just strong and good coffee. There are rotating pastries, but we opted for the sundried tomato and jalapeño cheddar bagels with cream cheese. I definitely would recommend. Only place that I wasn't impressed with in Kauai. First off it's pretty expensive, $13 for 2 small coffee's and one bagel sandwich. Very bohemian, hippie feel which is fine except that they took the extra step and added some drunk, homeless people in the mix hanging out, and I swear everything I touched in there was dirty and sticky. Sloooowest service ever, we waited 15 min. to get our bagel sandwich, and it wasn't complicated. Bagel, egg, cheese, and bacon, not that hard. Honestly the girl making the sandwich I'm convinced was under the influence of something. We ordered our sandwhich to go and she walks out 5 min. later with a bagel plain on a plate. I told her we ordered a sandwich and it was to go. She just walked away. Then she went back to the counter and for about 5 min. stood there talking to the homeless guy, she knew I was watching her to. Finally 10 min later she walks out with a brown bag and wanders around the tiny place looking lost. I had to walk over and tell her it was mine. Mind you I hadn't moved since the first time she came over. After all that the sandwich was alright but they are very heavy handed on the black pepper, I wouldn't be suprised if she accidentally spilled the whole shaker in the eggs. Not someplace that I would return to but my bf and I got a good laugh out of it. read more

This is one of the only two independently owned coffee shops on Kaua'i (the Art Hemingway cafe is the other one). I'm glad we stopped by this boho, hipster chic joint before we ventured around Wailea. My housemade chai tea was milky and spicy, the 4-shot espresso had my husband buzzing and the in-house baked vegan orange cake was heavenly. This inviting coffee hangout had it's own funky character and the laid back atmosphere makes it a great place to chill both indoors and outdoors on their large wrap around patio. Their drink menu was severely confused (coffee flavors intermingled with Italian soda syrups), and the cashier suffered from Reality Disconnect. Why, yes, when you have no Perrier, you can't make soda. (Oh, and you should really say "I'm sorry," rather than "We can't do that." Customer Service 101.) There was also a lack of appreciation for timeliness. Yes, we know it's island time, but when you order food to go, that means you're going somewhere. Dig? Doesn't mean we want to wait for 20 minutes. Sandwich portions are too small for normal people; must be the breatharian vibe there. One star awarded for outside seating/koi pond. I'm going to go against my first intention which is to bring out my single experience and rate it accordingly and just highlight what I imagine is normal for Small Town Coffee. I strolled by on two different occasions while in Kapaa and found a herd of angry hippies kind of stopping out front of the joint - fine, whatever. I went inside and was pleasantly surprised how gritty and comfy a feel the place had. It's like I teleported back to Philly and found a great new spot. Strange newspaper lacquered floors, cool paint job on the walls, neat wooden tables, local goods, It was a seriously awesome joint in a non-serious town. My coffee was very good and the server was super friendly. I wanted to like it. ---Read on for the isolated incident--- So when we got in there, a heated argument just broke out. Some guy was upset and trying to get his point across with the manager (I think) and since the manager was basically telling him to get out, the guy just kept retorting with "On what grounds..." "Your argument is illogical, how can you just come to that conclusion..." and other "I'm smarter than you" hippy comebacks. Frankly, I'd be so embarassed for being kicked out that I'd run with my head tucked in shame but this crap kept going, more people got involved... I thought I was back in Philly and just wanted nothing to do with it. It was hard to focus on just taking my coffee, getting milk and sugar and ignoring the asshole. Then, as I finished stirring, I hear it's about a girl that works there and he is fighting with the manager about some sort of "misinterpretation." Figures, but by that point, I was ready to take my coffee the hell out of there. I returned to Java Kai the next day instead. read more

The coffee here is excellent. Service is friendly and pretty quick. As with any place, there are pros and cons. The bad: Since this place moved to the red truck, their food items are limited to homemade bagels and assorted baked goods. Not a great family breakfast option, since they don't have all the food items they did previously. The bagels are delicious though!! The good: this coffee is awesome. We got a plain iced latte and an almond flavored iced latte. Both were excellent! Their tropical smoothie was also very good and refreshing. Delicious cinnamon raisin bagel that is homemade by a local bakery. Come here and support local businesses!!! Set your GPS to "Kojima Store" and look for the red truck at the end of the parking lot. There is outdoor seating on a small patio next to the truck. read more

I am a total coffee snob... Small Town Coffee was great. The lady who took my coffee order was nice and personable, and the coffee was outstanding. I ordered a 4-shot 16oz latte, and loved it. I would love to go back and try the pour over. The latte had some acidic, citrus notes, but they were not overpowering. The shots were extracted well and had an excellent caramel color. The milk was also steamed to perfection and had a spectacular microfoam texture. I enjoyed every sip! read more

Best coffee on the island, easily. We had several pour-overs during our stay that were delicious, and talking with the owner about her bean selections was a lot of fun. This place knows their stuff and takes pride in giving you the best cup of coffee they can. There is also a food menu of mostly (maybe all?) local items, although we didn't try the food except for an organic locally-made bagel that was excellent. We have a ton of high-end coffee shops where we live, and this would rival any of them. Highly recommended! read more

Stopped here on my Coffee Tour of Kauai. This was definitely my second favorite coffee on the Island. The thing that makes this shop is the excellent atmosphere. The shop is very comfortable and cute. It does have a small town feel. The woman who was behind the counter was extremely friendly and helpful. They had the most delicious scone...still warm from the oven (yes they do make them in house...woohoo!). The latte was good, although not the best I have ever had. Despite this, I would love to have a place like this in Phoenix to hang out in. It reminded me of cafes in Seattle. This had the best atmosphere of all the shops I visited. read more

Yes, I absolutely agree-there's quite a homey presence here. Sometimes it can get a little bit too much. The owner's kids are really cute, but when you're not feeling like being around kids, go somewhere else. Of the few times I've used the free wi-fi here, there was always a bunch of kids running around (the wooden floor, I might add). Upping the volume of my headset did nothing. There are actually a few tables reserved just for the kids, making it a wee bit tricky to find space around the morning-mid-afternoon time. The food menu is simple and selection slim-the prices a little bit on the uppity side for the fare. I was behind a lady in line when she was surprised to find that they were going to charge her for a (per) little cube of butter for her bagel. She asked why it didn't come with the bagel-the owner's response was because the butter wasn't free for them either. With that logic, they might soon be charging us for the utensils and bowls that come with our meals. Overall, this place is homey, the people friendly, the food decent. It's usually quite busy with activity, so if you need a place to use the internet quickly and grab a bite, this is your place in Kapa'a. read more

This place won my contest for best chai in the islands. It's made by a local fellow for this cafe, delicately spiced and mildly sweet. We saw the lady who serves Blue Bottle Coffee here on her day off, so that's a good sign. They also have an excellent tea selection. The ambiance is old school hippie hang out and it's across the street from the beach. Though it closes at 1PM, I think they're open in the evenings occasionally for a local produce dinner. read more

This coffee was delicious. We ordered 2 hot chocolates for our children, and my son dropped his and we made a HUGE mess. They were SO nice and even made him a new one, no charge.
