Short review: Too expensive for average Pho. Detailed review: We order a large and small pho with imperial egg rolls for appetizer. I was a bit surprised at the pricing for a regular sized bowl of Pho at 9 dollars with a large bowl at 10 while the special combo bowl hits 12 dollars! We usually go to a very popular spot about 12 minutes away. The Pho is always around 7-8 dollars a bowl so again I was curious why Monster Pho charges such a premium. When the food arrived it was a very average bowl of Pho you may find around San Jose or SF's tenderloin. Growing up as a Vietnamese American, I think I know a good bowl of Pho. It was good, not extraordinary. Very average. I was really curious why the Iced coffee with $5. It must be something special and with 4.5 star reviews I expected to be something far above average. Also, you have to understand this place is just a few blocks away from Blue Bottle coffee where you can get an amazing New Orleans style iced coffee for $4.00. Well once again, I was really disappointed. It was the typical Vietnamese Iced Coffee drip over condensed milk setup you would see at any Vietnamese cafe. No fancy revinvented hipster roasted brew, just a regular old iced coffee that usually costs 2-3 dollars on the menu for 5 bucks! Well the service must be why the higher prices right? Not really, we asked to take home our leftovers. The staff came back with empty boxes for us to box up our own food. Once again on lunch break, I ventured down to this place one day after seeing it on my way to Firestone due to a flat tire. Parking sucks, but once you find a space, it's worth the circling. I went in and was immediately greeted. Took my seat and ordered the chicken pho with a carrot apple juice. I was stoked to see that the carrot apple juice was on the menu. Presentation was fabulous with a thin slice of apple and a leaf of mint on top. So good. Tasted just like mom used to make. Then, the pho came out with all the fixings. Service for the food was extremely fast. So much meat! It was awesome. All the ingredients were fresh and delicious. I ordered the regular and it was freaking huge. I went back to work hurting from being so full. It was a great price range, too. About $8-10 for the pho and $4 for the drink, which I was more than willing to pay. My sister in law took me to this pho spot and I liked it. Especially the larger size that comes with everything. The broth is delicious and I'm pretty picky about broth. The place is very clean and the service is extremely superb. There's only street parking so remember to bring quarters for meter parking. I just with the meal came with a little more noodles. From the fresh ingredients, to the friendly fast service, Monster has been my go to Pho spot for quite some time now. The staff and food there are consistently awesome, and the owner always makes me feel at home. Although I don't live in the area, I never mind making the 20-25 min drive (passing other pho restaurants) just to get my bowl of Monster Pho. Searched Yelp for a pho restaurant we can go to for lunch and this place popped up. I haven't heard of it before and we decided to go due to the good reviews and plus I like the name, it's cute. Likes: There's plenty of metered street parking but for a short walk, you can park for free up the hill. You can tell this restaurant is new because the inside is clean. It's refreshing from the usually dirty, sticky tables at Vietnamese restaurants. We ordered Vietnamese coffees, chicken wings, and a regular and large pho. I thought the broth of the pho was good. It tasted like home cooking. They give a generous amount of rare steak and meatballs. Nothing to dislike at the moment. I'm happy there is now a nearby pho place to go to when I crave. I wish I didn't have to preface every Vietnamese / Chinese restaurant review by saying that I'm not a novice when it comes to eating these foods. There, I didn't say it. I grew up here, I've eaten lots of Vietnamese food at home and at reputable establishments. I had the monster cold vermicelli noodles with grilled pork and I enjoyed every bite. It was just what I needed and I can't speak for any other dish, but that was a solid dish. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Yes, this place costs more than your typical run of the mill Vietnamese restaurant in other parts of Oakland. However, you are paying for cleanliness, atmosphere, not worrying about parking, or parking somewhere and leaving your car susceptible to a smash and grab, among a slew of other unsavory things. You are more than welcome to venture out to the Vietnamese restaurants that you like but I don't think you can find too much fault with this restaurant because they've taken a different approach. I'm sure everyone in the surrounding area is more than appreciative of their venture as there isn't another pho/Vietnamese restaurant nearby. Well, at lest I am. I work across the street and only go to this place when I forget my lunch bc I'm too lazy to go to Piedmont. The pho is mediocre and overpriced. I also ordered shrimp imperial rolls, ok only. lived in San Jose for 8 years and there are a number of good Vietnamese restaurants (Binh Minh Quan, Tay Ho, Pho King) but it's too far from work. Staff is great though, place is clean and nice & bonus points for playing old school funk and soul while I was in there but did not make up for the lackluster broth. Pho is all about the broth, a rich, clear, deep broth...tasted a bit watered down. My pho is definitely better, other restaurants are definitely better. All I have to say is.. YESSS!!!! We came here a couple nights ago as we were looking for some bomb food before a concert at Oracle Arena. This place was in my cue along with some others, but I was ultimately craving some good vietnamese. We are from further north but have been hearing about the Oakland food culture being a hit, so we decided to check this place out. I am SO glad we did! First impressions were that it was clean as hell. Every Pho place I have ever been to has been dingy and kinda dirty.. But the food is what would bring me back. This place, on the contrary, has not only great food but is clean as f***. Bravo. Now, the food... We ordered the Beef Pho and the Monster Vermicelli. Holy crap. This food was to die for. The meat was flavorful, excellent and portions were so huge that neither one of us could finish. We also ordered a Thai Iced Tea. I wish I would have ordered two because I was regretting my decision to share it. We spent a total of $35. Food + Tip.. Not too shabby!! We will be back! read more

Jeez guys. I feel like giving only 3 stars but I'll make it 4, the food is still good. And granted I came at busy lunchtime... But the feng shui sucks for when it's busy bc people crowd in the door and I felt crowded as they were standing over me as I was eating. And as someone waiting for a table it's equally as awkward and there is no 'place' to wait comfortably. I'd rather wait outside or not come at all during busy times as it is. Yes it was busy but I had no steady service and had a lot of trouble getting their attention on many occasions, no one checked on me voluntarily. My tab was $15 and I put $20 down and kept waiting for change. I got up to free the table and wait for my To-go dessert and change, which I reminded and asked them about a couple times. It never came. Once my extras & Togo item were packed up and I still didn't get my change back I just left and told them to keep it. $3 would've been a generous 20% and considering the service - all that was really deserved. I honestly would've liked to keep my two bucks for a coffee. So they got to keep my whole twenty bucks and got a $5 tip on pretty sub-par service. It's difficult for me to excuse considering I'm a long time loyal customer who's left positive reviews and thus done my part to blow up their spot in the first place. They should take more care to retain their core long-time and/or repeat customers. In response to your note, the extra mile has gone both ways as I've driven many miles to frequent your establishment relatively exclusively when I'm out for Pho. And my tips have been generous. I was unwillingly holding up a table- because my service hadn't been completed. As it was I got up to vacate the table I felt so uncomfortable at with people standing over me (and that does happen bc of the layout and it IS awkward and uncomfortable both for waiting, and for eating) - and I went to the front register to make things faster & easier for you guys. Still after two reminders it got lost in the shuffle. Serving one at a time would mean finishing serving me, just one, so that I can be on my way and the table clear for the next folks. That's a good efficient way to do it and not forget things- but it's not what was happening this time. Granted I have had good experiences and given several five star reviews before in support. This isn't a good example but I still gave 4 stars for a 3 star experience. I won't be made to feel bad for posting my honest review of my recent experience. I'm glad it's been seen and the error noted, so thanks. Keep the change as a token of my gratitude for all the other times. I will likely return and choose less peak hours for my Pho fix. read more

Had this place bookmarked for awhile, finally came to try it. When we arrived we were given a table right away. Water and menu were presented promptly, we had the beef pho and the monster combo pho. The monster combo was huge, the soup was delicious and not overwhelming with star anise. The portions are huge! I loved the rare beef and it cooked up nicely in the broth. The chicken wings were light and crispy and delicious. I had also ordered the monster greens for dinner later night, it was fresh and that dressing was light and sweet and tart, I wished there were more! The beef was very well seasoned, huge chunks of chicken. The only addition that I would put would be more cilantro but that's just me. The one thing that struck me was that the owner was making the rounds and checking in with the customers. It looked like the majority of people are regulars as he was very friendly with them. One order of egg rolls come in 4 pieces. The price for pho was quite pricey compared to other vietnamese place I have been to and also the price of egg rolls. We also ordered some tea which was good. Clean and clear, fill-you-up pho for decent moneys. Though I did find a little dead gnat in my pho. Yucks. Luckily, the modern decor makes it feel not-so-bad compared to your standard soul-less affair found at other pho spots around the East Bay. So much IKEA. Many moderns. Went with a group of 6 in the middle of the afternoon and we all ordered a variety of "Monster" combos, which basically means all the meats in one bowl/plate and not having to choose. I myself had the Monster Pho, and despite my noodle-eating abilities, I couldn't finish it. Pretty satisfying all around, prices are reasonable, especially for the month of March when it's 10% off. Service was friendly and polite, though the food came out at all different times, despite the restaurant not being super busy. They'll probably work out the kinks of the food, timing in the next couple weeks and they were very apologetic. Don't park in the lot next to the pho place with the fence around it, its for another restaurant and they have a guard watching. We were both hoping for a new pho amazing pho place near and around S, unfortunately this was not the place for us. Pho chicken... Not your normal chicken pho flavor, it has a strong toasted scallion taste to it, we wouldn't order it again. Pho beef. Choose 3 types of beef. You can choose the same meat multiple times. This place must be ok for many patrons, as evidenced by its good reviews. I wouldn't return, however. It has friendly great service, spacious seating, and certainly a fair price, which is so hard to come by in the Bay. But the reason to go to a restaurant is for food and this place is not even average pho. In no way shape or form is this good or great pho, even at the price. The broth is not flavorful, as traditional pho broth should be. You can really tell it is not amazing- when cold, it is not at all gelatinous, which it should be if it is a rich broth. Pandan Waffle is insanely good!! I mean there are tons of things working for this place, but the Pandan Waffle is tasty awesomeness!! Absolutely delicious!! The Pho is yummy as are all the different combo dishes offered!! This is my go to place for Vietnamese food. I just can't get enough. The owner and staff are extremely helpful, friendly and quite polite. The atmosphere of the joint can get a little loud and the screeching chairs on the concrete floor can wreak havoc on your eardrums, but it's a small price to pay for excellent food. Very friendly staff and delicious food. They give a huge amount of tofu and it's the perfect crunch on the outside while soft in. Ingredients seemed really fresh. We ordered the potstickers as well. So filling! The only thing I'd want, which I forgot to mention, is a veggie broth for the pho. In my leftover box they added a veggie imperial roll as a bonus. And we got cute stickers. :) read more

This isn't your typical Vietnamese spot, it's clean, it's modern, and it has a hint of hipster to it. Hipster you say? How so? Definitely heard Bon Iver come on a few times. However with all that aside, where do I begin? The service was wonderful, the staff and owner showed us great hospitality. The food came in a timely manner and then there's the portion. A large bowl is actually a large bowl fill with a large quantity of noodles and meat. It's not just a bigger bowl that left me hungry afterwards. As for the Pho, it was great. It didn't leave me quenching for water afterwards. it is definitely on par with some of the better or best pho I've had. A+ spot. I wanted to order a bo kho Vietnamese beef stew they said they dont have that. Its like asking for adobo in a Filipino restaurant and they do not have it. I ordered a beef brisket pho with egg noodle. They said they only have rice noodle. I asked for diet coke they said they only have coke zero..... REALLY? WTH!?! The order came back with two slices of beef. I talked to one of the male waiter and he became defensive and said they put a good amount of beef per order. I showed him there were two paper thin slices of beef. He never offered to get me more instead he walked away and rolled his eyes. This MOFOs are highway robbers. P.S. they dont even have soy sauce! So, I'm a vegetarian. I used to eat meat, and I used to eat a lot of beef pho with tripe. I haven't had any for a long time since most pho places don't offer a true veggie option (with veggie broth). Well, this place does, and they do it pho-nomenally! The ingredients are fresh, the staff is friendly. My meat eating friends are also fond of their beef soups.
